ormer cricketer Shoaib Akhtar doesn’t want to get remarried. During a recent guest appearance on Hafiz Ahmed’s podcast, Akhtar discussed how he met his wife and his thoughts on second marriages.

The host asked him if he would remarry, to which the cricketer said that although Islam permits multiple marriages, he personally believes in the importance of remaining committed to a single partner. “One is enough. People can do it [get remarried] if they want to. I believe once you’re attached to somebody and that somebody has left their house for you, then we should also leave many things for her and be nice and kind to her.”

He added, “Become an inspiration for your wife and you can only do that by having a strong character.”

Akhtar recalled how he met his wife, Rubab Khan, revealing that their families had the opportunity to spend time with each other when they went for Hajj. It was during this time that his mother decided and expressed her desire to get Akhtar and Khan married. The cricketer explained that he had never refused any of her wishes, hence agreed to the marriage.

He said that while he considers himself to be quite liberal, his wife holds more conservative values. Out of respect for her preferences, he refrains from sharing too much about their personal lives on social media and other public platforms. He emphasised that his wife’s choice to maintain privacy is something he fully supports.

Akhtar tied the knot with Khan in 2014, towards the end of his illustrious career. The couple has two sons together.

Are you saying it’s common to be married to multiple women?

Yes, I know many Pakistanis with 2 wives.

To be honest they are mostly from the Interior (Sindh) and have this "shahar wallee" (the one they live in the city) and "khandanee wallee" (the one their family got them married to) concept.

I always thought 2nd wife was taboo in Pakistan other than waderra people . Neeed to visit Pakistan more often

Its not a taboo for the rich. Poor ones can just about afford one family!

There are some reasons like inability to have kids or illness.

Sounds heartless but those are societal pressures and are of course allowed by Islam.

I know of a few unique cases where people have gotten two wives ie where the first husband, wife weren't getting along but they decided not to divorce because of the kids hence the husband got married again to a second wife without divorcing the first wife.

In the second instance, the first wife was infertile and after 10-15 years of unsuccessful fertility treatments, she gave him permission to remarry again so that he can start a family.

Good to know this Shoaib.

I wonder what brought this on.

It’s definitely not common and is taboo among the rich

What a stupid question to ask someone.

There was another show with Hans Raj Hans while he was visiting Pakistan.

The host asks, “aap khuaab kis kisam k deykhtay hain”?

What kinda dreams do you see?

Hans Raj was dumbfounded for a second not knowing what to say - till he said - achay he deykhta hoon ji

What an idiotic question to ask! Just because some Pakistanis have multiple wives doesn't mean you ask a prominent celebrity whether he'll have multiple wives.
