SHARJAH: Pakistan’s national cricket team is well prepared to perform at its best on the forthcoming tour of New Zealand despite the final-Test loss against the West Indies in Sharjah, according to batsman Azhar Ali.

Pakistan missed out on a tour whitewash against the West Indies due to a five-wicket loss on the final morning of the third Test, the win being the tourists’ first away Test win against an opposition ranked higher than them since 2007.

It also proved to be the hosts’ first loss of the series having won the T20 and ODI series 3-0. The second-ranked Pakistan now travel to New Zealand for two Tests which will be followed by the tour of Australia.

“A whitewash in all three series would’ve been a great achievement but unfortunately we weren’t able to finish it off,” Azhar, who is Pakistan’s ODI captain, told Dawn after the loss. “But the team is very good with comebacks so it’s not all lost [following the defeat]. Sometimes it’s difficult for us to make a smooth transition from limited-overs cricket to Tests.

ODIs are more about fluent strokeplay while in Tests, you need to make yourself compact and know where your off-stump is.

“But we had enough time to adjust and that’s why it was a good performance when you look at the series as a whole.”

While leg-spinner Yasir Shah was adjudged man of the series for his 21 wickets, Azhar remained the top-scorer in the three Tests. His tally of 474 runs in six innings including a career-best unbeaten 302 in the series-opening pink-ball Test in Dubai.

Azhar also managed two half-centuries, including a 91 in the second-innings in Sharjah before a loose shot proved his downfall.

“That 300 was a proud moment for me. The thing all batsmen try in this format is to play a long innings but the tour has given me a lot of confidence and that’s always a great thing ahead of a tough tour.”

Azhar, who admitted he started his career as a leg-spinner, also revealed he wanted to be used more in the field as a bowler. He was only used for 8.3 overs in the entire Test series due to the presence of Shah, Zulfiqar Babar and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz.

But having bowled more than 80 overs in 52 Tests, Azhar wants to play a more active role, especially after the omission of Zulfiqar for the tour of New Zealand. “Whenever I get a chance, I try and contribute to the team’s cause. I also try and get a lot of practice in the nets so that when I’m needed to turn my arm over in the middle, I’m ready and well prepared.

“The team didn’t need me that much in this series because we had three spinners, but in Australia or England, when you play three fast-bowlers, that’s where I can contribute as a fifth bowler and put in 10-12 overs in a day to ease the burden of the fast-bowlers.”

He's right, in Australia and New Zealand we either need an all rounder at 6 or a part timer who can bowl at least 8 overs in a day.

He will be murdered with his spin. The PCB should have selected a pace bowling all rounder for this tour.

I have seen azhar bowl and for some reason i find his bowling quite threatening, he can dismiss batsmen or atleast keep them quiet, also he has a better googly than yasir shah. If azhar can bowl 10 overs a day then it solves the allrounder conundrum for Pakistan. An additional batsman can be included at no 6.

Misbah as a captain refuses to alter the preplanned script and that's why he is an average skipper who lacks imagination. Take Dhoni for example he continuously gave kedar jadav a nondescript bowler who had no prior bowling experience and turned him a major contributor in the series, granted he is an ordinary bowler but he still picked so many wickets.

I have hardly seen Misbah try anything adventurous ever, he would keep bowling yasir from one end relentlessly and tire him out more importantly, give the batsmen enough sighters to take the surprise element of your strike bowler rendering him ineffective.

Well, there goes Nawaz's spot in the XI.

And very well, if Azhar can chip in with 8-10 overs each day and bowl at an economy rate of ~2.5, and have the ability to pick up the odd wicket (1 per 20-25 overs), then no, we do not need Nawaz or a pure all-rounder in the side.

Babar should, in this case, and will start against NZ, and it could also be at #3, with Asad going back to #6 (though I think Babar slotting at 6 and Sarfraz moving to 7 is likelier).

He's probably a useful 6th bowler but his bowling doesn't meet the requirements of the 5th bowler. In Australia, he could take a Steve Smith role with the ball and break partnerships, but a genuine 5th bowler would be needed (Mohammad Hafeez would be perfect for this role given that he's probably Pakistan's best offspinner).

We don't have an AR who is good enough to bat at 7 considering our tail is the worst.

His bowling is rubbish no better than than Babar or even YK rolling his arm.

Hope we play a pace bowling all-rounder like Aamer Yamin soon.

Fahim Ashraf- Bowls in the 130-132 km/h range, which is not enough pace to trouble a batsman. He can swing the ball and has a decent amount of control. His batting style is gritty but still needs a lot of work. Ultimately he isn’t a feasible option at this moment in time.

Aamad Butt- Bowls in the 138-140 km/h range and can swing the ball both conventionally and reverse. His batting is under developed, but he has potential. He’s a good timer and striker of the ball; he can become a John Hastings esque batsman.

Amir Yamin- Bowls in the 128-130 km/h and can swing the ball. Can do a decent job in regards to the 4th pace bowler on a supportive pitch. He has a hefty amount of potential with the bat but his performances haven’t been up to the scratch and is extremely inconsistent.

All the pace bowling all-rounders aren't developed and therefore are at this point not good enough to play in our test team.

He should bowl more , that would improve his bowling , and can be used in OD as well.

That's why we have seen you bowl so much in Test cricket till date or is that you have trust issues with your captain.

There is no point in running in and bowling a ball. Its about line and length.

Azhar might know how to bowl, but his line and length is terrible, and the thing that Misbah hates the most is runs.

Should use himself more in odis in tests we need a genuine all rounder.

Sami, Sharjeel, Azhar, Younis, Misbah, Shafiq, Sarfaz, Yasir, Wahab, Sohail, Amir

Expecting something like this.

why hammad azam and anwar ali did not become good for test cricket. I hope somehow they work hard and become good test allrounders

One of Sharjeel or Babar will play!

Azhar needs to practice, it is only between overs 70-80 where he will need to bowl, and I may even throw him the over before lunch or tea, when players would be expecting Yasir,
Azhar had a terrific googly in his locker

no thanks- dont want him going down the Hafeez road, I'd rather he just concentrate on his batting

and we need a stronger 5th bowler anyway, someone who is an actual threat to take wickets, not just eat up a few overs
