The calls for South Africa cricket authorities and experienced members to bring back AB de Villiers from his “time away” from Test cricket grew even louder on Monday following the Proteas’ 177 run defeat at the hands of England in Manchester. The result meant England inflicted a hammering 3-1 series defeat on the second-ranked South Africa and moved up to third in the process.

The defeats have come largely on the back of poor batting displays with South Africa crossing 300 runs just thrice in the four Tests and inability to find a suitable option at number four with three options considered throughout the series.

“I would love AB to play – we all know how good he is and we missed him, but we’ve spent too much time talking about when he is going to come back,” said South Africa captain Faf du Plessis after the 177 run defeat. “The hope of him coming back is something we need to move past, we need to find someone else who fulfill that role. If AB comes back it’s a huge bonus but I don’t expect him to come back into the Test team.”

South Africa have experimented with JP Duminy, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma in the number four slot. Duminy was dropped after the first Test at Lord’s, De Kock took over in the second and third Tests with Bavuma getting that chance in the final match of the series. “We didn’t come here planning for JP to be dropped, we were hoping that he could bowl and play those x-factor innings,” said Du Plessis.

AB de Villiers had initially missed the series against New Zealand, Australia and Sri Lanka due to an operation but since then has said he is taking a sabbatical from Test cricket while maintaining focus on the shorter version of the game and targeting the 2019 World Cup. Many in the game, especially in South African cricket, have expressed hope that he returns to bolster the lineup. Former captain Shaun Pollock, too, called on Cricket South Africa (CSA) to try and convince de Villiers to come out and play in the series against India and Australia at least.

It would be better if he, being the captain of the team talks about the regressive quota policies before anything else. That's a bigger deterrent to their success than any individual player.

AB should announce his retirement from tests if he doesn't have any intention of coming back. He looks bad for picking and choosing which games he plays for his country. I don't have a problem with AB not wanting to play test cricket, but the way he has gone about has made him look like a soft and weak cricketer.

He should never be talked about in the same breath as the likes of Lara,Sachin,Viv,Ponting ,etc.

Spot on. Whatever legacy he might have had is ruined.

This is incredibly selfish from AB. He's not thinking about the team at all and only for himself. All he is thinking about is winning the 2019 WC as captain. If he was thinking about the team he would start playing test cricket again seeing how the South African batting is struggling and would also relinquish the one-day captaincy and give it to du Plessis, who is very obviously the better captain and a natural leader.

This is what happens when the players get too famous. They start putting themselves over the team.

The quota policies have been around for a very long time and they have rarely interfered with South Africa's success. And are you actually telling me that Rabada, Maharaj, Philander, Bavuma and Amla don't deserve to be in the team?

Their biggest deterrent to success has been the constant injuries to Philander and more importantly, the poor show by their otherwise strong batting, which AB could have substantially improved.

Pathetic.

AB should just come out and announce he is retiring.

May be AB is hurt for the racial quota - he has decided to sacrifice his career for the sake of one more white player, just like he did for FaF.

Great, great team man & visionary selfless leader.
Respect.

De Villiers won't have made an ounce of a difference to the series result in England. He was at his peak as a test player about 5 years ago when he was flaying Australia all around the WACA, but has been on a steady decline since. He failed in the last two high profile series he played in anyway against India and England 18 months ago and couldn't do anything to stem the tide.

Incidentally, South Africa lost this series because their white players were not good enough, including the captain.

AB ruined his own legacy, but SA board have had a part to play, they gave him too much independence to make his decisions and it will now backfire.

or maybe he is protecting the longevity of his career to allow him to become a t20 mercenary for the next few years.

I hope this is a bad case of sarcasm. ABD has abandoned his team when they needed him most. Should learn a thing or two from Amla.

You have to focus more on his qulities - Great, team-man, visionary, selfless, leader.

This is either brilliant sarcastic humour, or a painfully dreadful contribution.

I leave it to you to decide through your good judgement from the source - aka the poster.

Ashwell Prince's tweets were far worse and confrontational. Former spinner Paul Harris even tweeted him back saying Prince and AB used to be team-mates and it would be better if Prince just picked up the phone and told AB how he felt. To which Prince replied: "Incase you don't know, its 2017 and everyone has an opinion"

I personally don't like the manner in which Prince and Gibbs went about criticizing AB, on Twitter of all places, but their criticisms aren't wrong and it's time AB stopped putting himself and his personal goals over the team. If you don't want to play test cricket, just retire.

ABD should just retire from Test cricket. There is nothing left for him to achieve in this format. He himself said once that for him scoring 10k in test cricket means nothing. His main goal is to win worldcup for South Africa.

Lot of former cricketers have been takig a dig at him, specially Gibbs. Its rich coming from Gibbs considering he was involved in match fixing fiasco himself.
At least AB didn't sold his country for few bucks like Gibbs.

Anyways, its his decision whether we like it or not. 20-30 years down the road no ones gonna remember that Ab scored so and so test runs, but if he helps win worldcup for south africa, it will create history which will be remember for generations to come.

All he need to do is officially retire from Test cricket(most boring form of game)

He may have been a visionary with his technique and shot selection, but never a great or a team man, if he was such a team man he would be grinding with the rest of the troops when times were hard in England. Selfish rather than selfless, he knew he would be found out so skipped the test all together.

If he makes SA win 2019 WC everything will be forgotten and he would be rated as Top 3 ODI player of all time if not his legacy would be forgotten..
