"I don't want to make that statement, that I will retire after the 2020 T20 World Cup": Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik at a media talk:

"I don't want to think about the World Cup. My selection is for the BD series and I want to avail any opportunities I get. The WC is far away, I don't focus on goals far away. What is in my hands, my performances that can benefit the team, I'll focus on that. Youngsters in the team need to be groomed and that's the priority. The World Cup is far away and I don't want to focus on that.

"I have recently played BPL and saw some of their youngsters, they made a good combination with the seniors. Their team is quite strong and their system is quite strong. Their side is well balanced.

"With the Pakistan team, in Tests and ODIs there is some experience missing but when it comes to T20I cricket, we have players who have played a lot of matches. When I go to play leagues, other teams' player and management praise Babar and it feels nice. Hopefully when other players also get consistent chances, they will also insha'Allah perform like Babar.

"As for Hafeez and myself, we are experienced. Performance is the first priority but we also need to think about the dressing room atmosphere and helping our young captain. We will try to share our experiences with the youngsters in the team.

"I am a human being, I also slip up and start thinking negative things. If anyone says they don't get negative thoughts and they don't become angry, that's wrong. Anything that happened in the past, I have left it behind.

"My performances in the ODI WC weren't good but in T20Is, whenever the team was #1, I did perform well. The new management came and tried some new things with new players to try and make a well balanced side, I don't think they should be criticised for that. As for myself, I stay positive. Whenever I get a chance, in any league, I focus and try to do my best. Whether you play a club match or for Pakistan, you should give it your best shot. But of course, there's no feeling like when you play for Pakistan.

"If seniors aren't good and have their personal agendas, it's never good. Your intention should always be to help the team. Whenever I have played, Hafeez bhai has played, he has always helped the team. Captaincy isn't a major thing in my view, your priority is the same. It's just that your responsibility increases a bit. I don't run after captaincy or think it's something that you should strive for. I don't think you can only give your best as a captain, you should always try to do your best in any situation. Seniors can help with grooming the captain and youngsters and help with improving the system.

"I have not lost hope, it's wrong to lose hope. If I had lost hope, I would have left all cricket, I wouldn't play in leagues either because I don't like to drag things. I am not insecure in life. Until your body is supporting you, you can achieve anything and the goal was that I should do whatever I can for Pakistan because I think I am good enough. When I came back from CPL, I played domestic matches in the hope of making a comeback. For any professional cricketer, no league that you play in can provide the same sense of satisfaction.

"I think it was a good decision by the board to not give Hafeez and me a central contract. Other players are more deserving besides us and I appreciate this decision to focus on youngsters who can play for a longer time than us. I fully back this decision.

"It's not necessary that things always go according to your wishes or your thinking, there are ups and downs. You don't learn as much during your highs as you do during lows, sometimes lows are good for your life. I kept playing and then made my comeback in 2015. I came in 1 format, then another, then all 3. My performances in the 2019 WC weren't that good, I had already announced my ODI retirement. Performances keep going up and down but you should be positive.

"Whenever we go to any league, we ask other players about Pakistan and they also ask us about how things are in the country. We tell them that if we roam around alone in the country, there is no problem and things are very good now. In Pakistan, the security is such that you don't get anywhere else in the world. BD players also asked and I told them that they should come and they will enjoy it, our stadiums, people and media are very supportive and welcoming. Only 1 player isn't coming and that's due to family, that's personal and I don't want to comment on that but I will request that if you're not coming now, please do come next time. I'm sure that when the BD team sees the atmosphere here and the security, they will be able to convince the 1-2 cricketers who didn't come and next time, they will come.

"We all have different natures and points of view. So debate and mutual understanding to select a team is good. I don't want to show anyone what I can do or what calibre player I am. Whether the selection committee, captain etc. want you or don't want you, your goal should be to do your best. Going against someone who wasn't supportive of me or being with someone who backed me, I never think of these things, I just want to focus on doing well myself.

"I want to play as an all-rounder but that depends on the captain and the plan that the team management makes, the match situation, etc. I am available as an all-rounder and when I am captaining, I try to bowl because that provides an extra edge that helps the team combination. I am fully fit for bowling, fielding and batting. I am at a part of my career in terms of performances, you all can see my performances in the 3-4 leagues I have played since the WC. Physically, I feel very fit. I wish I had this fitness regime when I was young. I was blessed that my father was an athlete. Now, I want to keep doing the hard yards as long as I am playing, you have to get out of your comfort zone and I don't feel stress on my body right now.

"I was saying since quite a while that 2019 WC was my last ODI tournament and in T20I, the 2020 T20 World Cup, that is my last T20 tournament and that is still my thought. But I am still enjoying my cricket and I don't want to make that statement, that I will retire after the 2020 T20 World Cup. When I get closer, I will see what happens and make a decision.

"The new management is trying new players so we can have a strong team in the WC. This time, central contracts were given to fewer players due to the revamped domestic structure and investments there. I don't think it's a major thing that lesser players are centrally contracted, we are still trying new players. There are some players who performed in domestic cricket. Before, around 30 players used to get central contracts.

Hope Misbah doesn't select him for World T20 and overrules Babar Azam.

Malik offers nothing, that too in AUS. His spin-bashing days are also long gone, and he can't play anything above 120kph from the fast bowlers.

Was always a dud against pacers, even more so now.

No Malik, please.

If my memory corrects me, we only started winning in last year's world cup when Haris came in for him and by that time it was too late, and we all know those consistent hoicks from Hafeez to be out next to nothing.

I've read in the past here, through one of his statements, that he might hang around till 2021 T20 world cup..so that's the reason he's not mentioned about retiring post 2020 world cup.

Sigh.

Classy Player, deserves a final shot at redemption during 2023 WC to seal his legacy.

Have a soft corner for him as an Indian fan. Serious.

Chad vi do hun...

Shoaib, you’ve been a great servant to Pakistan but your time is up.

Start grooming and mentoring the upcoming generation.

Pakistan recalled the experience pair of Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez for the three Bangladesh T20Is, which begin on Friday, to strengthen the side and provide depth in the batting department.

The two share 200 T20Is between them and are eager to impart their knowledge of international cricket to the youngsters, besides helping Babar Azam, the Pakistan captain, in executing his on-field plans effectively.

On the sidelines of a warm-up match at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium, which hosts the three-T20Is on 24, 25 and 27 January, Hafeez and Malik, who last played for Pakistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, had a conversation on how they looked to make the most of their returns in the Pakistan camp.

Mohammad Hafeez said: “The best you can do for the next generation of cricketers is to share your experience and that cannot be done with words but with actions. We have learned from our seniors on how to be successful in your cricketing career.

“It is an added role for us that we have to groom these young cricketers in the side and prepare them for the next 10-12 years.

“There is a pressure of captaincy which you and I have faced in our careers and we can take this off from Babar by putting up performances which can lead Pakistan to victories. We can back his plans and help him in their better execution on the field.

“It is an honour for me to wear the Pakistan cap. I am eager to wear the Pakistan kit and win matches for my country at this beautiful venue. I still remember the day when I made my international debut and I still have the same intensity in me. For me, this is not a comeback. I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Shoaib Malik said: “As a professional cricketer, you want to give your best shot whether you are playing club, league or international cricket. This doesn’t feel like a comeback because in my previous comebacks there have been more lengthy gaps as compared to this one. It is a wonderful feeling to be donning your country’s colours which cannot be described in words. There is certainly no comparison for it.

“Our inclusion will help the youngsters and our captain as we bring in the experience which we can share with them.

“Age is just a number and it should not be a metric to judge a player rather a player should be judged on the criteria set by the board and the management in regard to his on-field performances. Senior players bring in the experience, which they share with the youngsters and make the system stronger.”

The first ball of the first T20I is scheduled to be bowled at 2pm.

Upcoming fixtures:

1st T20I – Friday, 2pm

2nd T20I – Saturday, 2pm

It would be nice if these guys stop having these too frequent chats to the media as it is making them look like a laughing stock

Misbah is the one who loves rubbish hafeez and Malik evident by million chances he gave them when the captain. Now as a coach he wants to continue. Such a shameless person is misbah.

Baring Baba Fakhar Amir rest of 8 places are up for grab youngsters ain’t cut the mustard got whitewashed by SL beaten heavily against aus. Hence mediocres like malik & hafeez can pin point there exact retirement date!!

For a guy who may well be into his 40s , Malik looks insanely fit. Have to give him credit for that.

Senior Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Wednesday said his previous announcement of quitting international cricket after this year’s T20 World Cup is not cast in stone and he might continue if his body permits.

The veteran, who turns 38 on February 1, was speaking to reporters in Lahore. He retired from Test cricket in 2015 after scoring a double hundred in a home series against England in the UAE and bid adieu to ODIs after the World Cup but is still active in the T20 format.

“Yes I had said I will retire from ODI cricket after the World Cup (in 2019) and I did that and I also said I might retire completely after the World Cup T20. But right now I think it is about short-term goals when the time comes I will think about it,” he said.

“As a senior player I have a responsibility and goal and thankfully my body is supporting me in my career and I will continue to play till I feel good about it. I am not someone who will hang around just for the sake of it,” he asserted.

Malik admitted that he was upset after being criticised for a poor World Cup and for being ignored for the national T20 squad.

“I am a human being and I can also fail and yes I can also have negative thoughts and get angry for what happened. My performances in the World Cup were not good but I have always performed well in the T20 format,” Malik said.

Malik and senior teammate Mohammad Hafeez won surprise recalls to the Pakistan T20 squad for the home series against Bangladesh after being constantly ignored after the World Cup.

Malik said he was not disappointed or upset anymore.

“I am not insecure and I am sure that as long as I am fit I can achieve anything. My goal has always been to be good enough to play for my country. I wanted to make a comeback that is why after the Caribbean Premier League, I reached Faisalabad and played in the National T20 event.”

“Whatever happened, I have forgotten and moved on. A new team management has come in and I think they were right in giving chances to other players and trying to build a balanced outfit,” he said.

Malik, who has appeared in 111 T20 internationals, also made it clear he was not disappointed at not being given a central contract by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

“We have lot of youngsters coming through. So they looked at it that way and this time they have also reduced the number of players who were given central contracts,” he pointed out.

Malik also insisted that he was not thinking about the World T20 in Australia and only focusing on the Bangladesh series.

“I am not thinking about the World Cup. I will try to give my best at whatever opportunity I get now. I have not set long-term goals as the World Cup is far away.

“I just want to perform and help groom the youngsters in the dressing room. I and Hafeez want to share our experiences with them,” he said.

Misbah will be the first one to advocate for Malik and Hafeez's selections, don't worry.

Fact of the matter is he didn't. He had dropped these two as his first decision. Babar wanted them back.

BUT, selecting Hafeez is a very good call. He will be very valuable in Aus, as he has a good range of shots and can take on the pacers.

Selecting Malik, however, doesn't make sense. Hope he's dropped for WorldT20.

We are all aware of the fact that Misbah loves playing his experienced friends ahead of deserving youngsters. This is what he used to do when he was the captain of the team, and this is what he is going to do as the Chief Selector/Head Coach of the team as well.

Babar is surely the captain, but we all know that he is not going to have much of a say about team selections. He is as influential as Shastri is for the Indian team when it comes to decision making off the field.

We don't need the experience of Hafeez and Malik. You both bring nothing to the side now.

2021 WT20 is in India.

So, damad ji may be planning to go out on a high on sasural soil. :malik

How about then he takes back his retirement from test cricket and plays tests?

Hate these free rides to these oldies

Well he could play a match winning innings today!

Misbah has set a very bad precedent. These oldies want to play until their 40s.

Quotes from post match presentation

"What I saw was that against the new ball you could play through the line but later in the innings it wasnt that easy although you could place the ball in the gaps and still get runs"

"Credit to our bowlers as they restricted Bangladesh (to a manageable score) although they started off well initially"

"We fielded exceptionally well today, everybody was running around well"

"When the pitch is tough and you are chasing, then you need to make sure you give yourself a proper chance and take the game deep"

"Especially when you lose early wickets, the opposition is on you and trying to stop singles, so thats the time you start rotating the strike and that sends a positive message to the dressing room also"

"Then you have your bench power who can produce boundaries in the end"

Well he could play a match winning innings today!
That was a good call. Malik is a dynamite player on low slow pitches against slow medium bowlers. He is king in these situations.

Problem is that WC is on bouncy Australia and most teams have 145 kph bowlers these days.

we are doomed

Am i the only one who did not want hafeez and malik to score ?
and now that they have, we are doomed. no chance of wining the t20 wc with these two shameless creatures.

Having someone is better than having nothing in my opinion. If Shehzad and Umar would have performed fans would have hated that too so everybody cant be made happy.

Which players should be brought in who are good enough for international T20s? Also why werent we seeing such threads when Mickey played both of these year after year rather than developing someone young?

I don't get some Pakistani fans. You want them to fail eventhough they are playing well and making meaningful, match-winning contributions? And who would you have replacing them? the same guys who failed in the last series, and the one before that?

When I get closer to T20 World Cup will see what to do: Shoaib Malik on international retirement

Pakistan's senior all-rounder Shoaib Malik on Friday said he will take a decision on international retirement closer to the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in October.

"The World Cup is still far off and I think right now my focus is on the Pakistan Super League and coming matches for Pakistan. When I get closer to the World Cup I will see what to do," he said.

Malik, 38, has already retired from Tests after 35 matches and One-day Internationals (287) but is still playing T20 format in which he has appeared in 113 games for Pakistan besides appearing in different leagues around the world.

Malik, a former Pakistan captain, had said after retiring from ODIs after the last World Cup that he would also call it quits in T20 Internationals.

"I will have to see my fitness and position in the national side closer to the World Cup than I will take a decision on final retirement," he told reporters.

The all-rounder also said he didn't take criticism to heart as it is like having breakfast in the morning in Pakistan cricket.

"One becomes used to it. I don't take it to heart. As I am not an insecure person and I have achieved a lot in life. For me even now to play for Pakistan is the biggest honour and perform as well as a senior professional.

"As far as my being dropped after the World Cup is concerned as a professional cricketer I have seen lot of ups and downs in life and I took it in my stride."

Malik said that he just wanted to avail every opportunity available to him now to do well for his country.

Malik also advised the Pakistan Cricket Board selectors to not pick players on basis of two or three performances in Pakistan Super League or league cricket.

"PSL is important for us as it is seen internationally and followed widely by the people and covered extensively by the media. But I would still emphasise don't select anyone or one or two matches. Criteria should be strong to pick a player for Pakistan."

"I would say if a player gives some good performances make him play at least two or three seasons and let him perform consistency in them before considering him for selection.

Excellent catch today and doing ok in batting so far.... vs KK at the PSL

Shoaib Malik showing how its done to the rest of PZ line up!

68 off 54 so far (last over)

Somehow he is still doing it. 3 consecutive 50's.
He should become a permanent fitness coach in the near future.

Quite impressive performance at the PSL. Unfortunately he will probably flop on the big stage.

Regardless, there's a lot to be said for his fitness. I imagine marrying Sania has prolonged his career quite a bit.

Agree 100%, he is good for PSL and other T20 leagues but will fail at International level, and Sania is definitely a positive influence on his fitness.

Is there a need for Malik to respond like this to a pundit who is being paid to do his job? He will be doing the same in retirement

Lot of pressure on Malik - cant see how that will not effect his performance for Pakistan if he is selected for the World Cup.

He didn’t too well in the 50 over World Cup in England.
If anything our performances went up after he was dropped...
That should have been the end of Malik.

He should never have been selected Being the limited batsman he is hes never done well anywhere wheres theres swing seam or bounce

His odi record over many years is atrocious in england so to keep selecting him despite this was mind boggling
