For those who interact with me, clearly know that I have no relevant insight on how to play or cheer for in any given Football match. However, with the premier league happening these days and all my friends having this insanely intense conversation day in day out I felt that I too wanted a piece of this excitement.

I started browsing the internet for information on how the game was played and have sucecssfully gulped down the basic principles of it (offside, red/yellow card, set pieces, corner, throw ins etc etc).

Then came the interesting part of choosing a team and since the people I hate (not really :yk) supported popular clubs such as Liverpool/Arsenal/ManU/Chelsea etc etc I decided I wanted to be a leftist and went for Stoke City (which tbh I never had heard of before, as a premier league team)

The decision to support this team is not a logical one but totally a random selection based on the asthetics of their name itself, for a good genuine 10 seconds I was like 'Does this somehow connect ot Ben Stokes ?? Hmmmm.....'

Anyways whats done is dones and from this day onwards I'am a Stoke City Fan !! I wish you all misfortune in all the one field battles to come my lords and I hope we crush you all this season !!

STOKES CITY FTW !!!!!! :bhatti

May you also should Join the rest of the desi's and support Liverpool and Man U. Most of the desi's are glory hunters, so good on you for something different.

well for Pakistani born folks you cant really blame them

they will either support the team of their favorite players or the team which plays most exciting football and is successful. In both cases it is more likely to be a big club

However i never understand why the british pakistanis dont support teams from their hometown

Lool to be honest I support Arsenal because I was born and raised near the stadium but I live near white hart lane now :))) Still a loyal gunner though.

lol thats a pretty solid reason to support a club

i support man united just cuz Giggs and Beckham were my favorite players thats it. No other connection

Rewind 20 years ago, and that was the same case, the ones who grew (spent their teens) in 80s were Liverpool fans while the 90s bunch were mostly Man Utd or Arsenal fans...

Which is why I supported Blackburn Rovers, cool kit and cool emblem were the first 2 reasons that appealed to my then 10 year self. And of course "Ewood Park" had a nice ring to it

Within 2 seasons of supporting them they became EPL Champions :)
Of course, now they are in League 1, but that is a different story

If you in a neutral area then it doesnt matter, but i am on about the people that live in the UK. Burnley has a large desi populace, and they also are in the Premier League but i guarantee most of the Desi support Man U and Liverpool, although they have no connection to those clubs.

well atleast you guys stuck to your teams

i knew a few kids in middle and high school who were Man United and Arsenal supporters but switched to Chelsea when the money came

yes thats my point

for eg Aston villa or birmingham city should have huge desi fanbases but its not there

Booo! Aston Villa should have been your no.1 choice, but I suppose you wanted to get in on the EPL excitement :)) we're still in the championship :yk but have made some key changes to get back into the EPL, I'd like to think my team is one of the favourites to gain promotion. Bruce has taken charge as manager (brilliant track record getting teams promotion) and in one of the most shocking signings in recent times, we managed to nail John Terry!

Fair play to you, in a way foreign fans can't entirely be accused of being glory hunters compared to the folk in England where you see many fans in my city for example support the likes of Liverpool when they have literally no link to that garbage city full of ignorant scousers who can't even speak English properly; and you do get a lot of asian fans who support Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal etc so you had the chance to pick any team you wanted and went for the under dog, but regardless; loyalty is important! I've seen fans on this forum switch from Madrid to Barca ! London_Lahori

Oh Please !! We'll bury you jobbers the next time we meet. It's gonna be CT Final (with you lot being the bhartis :yk) all over again.

Mark Hughes was a better player that Bruce and is a better manager hand down. Or have you conveniently forgotten the last time we met on the pitch ?? :ma

Yeah a lot of British Asians support Man U because of certain players, I also wanted to support Arsenal because of their style of play and Thierry Henry who was just amazing, Fabregas in the middle and RVP scoring those volleys. I remember back in nursery when a friend told me that he supports Chelsea and I should support Arsenal :))) The Tottenham fans in my area are pure annoying though, one told me that Gareth Bale (Before he moved to RM) was better than Messi and Ronaldo :)))

My grandma was a better player then Hughes ! Baqwas City will be made to eat goo !

this reminds me of the legendary guy in my class who used to support Arsenal at home and Man United in school. Apparently Utd was already 'taken' by someone in his neighborhood circle of friends and each person had to support a unique team so he picked arsenal :)))

Well, I am guessing you started following blackburn in the early to mid 90s. In the mid 90s Blackburn were a pretty decent side and even before they won the league in 95, they were in the top 4 for 4-5 seasons. They also had a few start players like Shearer. In fact, they were the Man City of the early 90s and they were bought buy a rich owner who bought top players like Shearer to win the league.

So, your following of the Rovers is based on their success. Just as the others who followed Liverpool, United or Arsenal.

Its true a lot of desis are glory hunters. But television exposure is also relevant - and naturally kids are going to be more attracted to the teams they'll see more often which are usually the big clubs like Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool etc. I started following Liverpool as I caught one of their live games when we had a Sky subscription for the 1996 Cricket World Cup. I also was drawn to the working-class values and history of the club, and given the paucity of silverware since 1990 there's not much glory to hunt !

However these clubs have historically been more open to ethnic minorities. Arsenal and Man Utd are located in very multicultural, inner city areas. There are sizeable Pakistani and Gujrati Indian populations in Old Trafford whilst Arsenal's ground is located in North London where there are large Black and Asian communities.

Liverpool has a smaller BME population but is a left-wing, port city so historically has had a cosmopolitan and internationalist outlook. It's home to the oldest Black and Chinese communities in Britain. The far-right never gained much traction in Liverpool. The club's popularity with BMEs increased with the signing of John Barnes in 1987, not the first black Liverpool player (that was Howard Gayle), but certainly the most popular due to his exciting and dynamic style.

However grounds like Chelsea, Stoke and West Ham were very intimidating for ethnic minorities in the 70s and 80s. The far-right National Front had a presence on the terraces and unleashed torrents of racist abuse towards black players.

Places like Burnley, Bradford, Luton and Oldham have high Asian populations but the clubs haven't established themselves in the Premier League, often residing in the lower leagues, so aren't as appealing. Their styles of play aren't exciting either.

Liverpool and Everton were racist as they come in the 80's. Before John Barnes, i dont remember any black players and Joe Royal was threatened and abused when he tried to sign Dion Dublin from Man U.

Howard Gayle was the first black Liverpool player which I already mentioned. Racist slurs on the terraces were sadly a sign of the times where Love Thy Neighbour was one of the most popular shows on TV.

I know I'll be labelled biased but Everton was worse on this account and their fans have said as much on their Forums. John Barnes infamously had a banana thrown at him at Goodison Park in an FA Cup match and the fact we had a black player was used by some Evertonians to score points against us.

There was a Littlewoods Cup match in 1987 at Anfield and from the away end there was a chant from a small section but audible on television "Everton are white, Everton are white, hello hello". I don't think they had a black player until Daniel Amokachi in 1994.

As for not signing Dion Dublin, I thought it was more to do with Man Utd wanting a fee of about £2 million and the Blues being skint at the time.

I don't care about soccer anymore. A truly feminine sport.

I don't care about soccer anymore. A truly feminine sport.

Well....Can't disagree there :)), although I have planned on watching it myself come 20th August. Always heard that football athletes were God's gift to humanity but let's see how good they really are once I sit down and watch them closely.

It was rumoured at the time that Joe Royal was stopped from signing Dublin because he was Black. As far as other clubs were concerned, there is no doubt that NF had a strong hold on certain sections of the fan base.

Lmao Stoke City is a bit random but can't accuse you of being a glory hunter :)) However, since you're new to the sport, make sure you watch the likes of Ronaldo and Messi, they are the true geniuses of the game.

this reminds me of the legendary guy in my class who used to support Arsenal at home and Man United in school. Apparently Utd was already 'taken' by someone in his neighborhood circle of friends and each person had to support a unique team so he picked arsenal :)))

That's nothing, someone I knew used to support whichever team performed the best every week. :hafeez2

I hope ahmedwaqas92 won't be intimidated by a cold rainy night in Stoke. :yk

ahmedwaqas92 I hope you watch the big teams play as well.

As a Stoke City fan, you'll be devoid of any entertainment :)) So you better follow a few other teams to enjoy the sport and the best league in the world.

Jese Rodriguez is a neat acquisition.

But can he perform on a cold, rainy night in Stoke?

A person can't become a fan of some team or someone before they have even seen them perform. You'll watch a couple games and then get bored. If your main aim is to just engage in conversation with friends, why not just watch all the football you can and naturally over time, you'll start liking a particular team.

Also, people usually talk about football by comparing their team versus the other persons, or by discussing the players, performances about one team if they both support them. By choosing to support a mid table club that doesn't really share any sort of competitive rivalry with the big teams, you'll hardly participate in any conversations (at best you'll be the annoying guy looking for attention by being a hipster).

I honestly don't watch much soccer unless it's the World Cup or Toronto FC in MLS. I can't really be keenly interested I have some affiliation with the team or it's a national match.

However I do tune in to the bigger matches like El Classico and The CL Final.

The only thing worse than supporting a popular team just because they are popular is supporting a team no one else does to be different.

You're giving yourself poor quality football for what? Just because of what people think

May you also should Join the rest of the desi's and support Liverpool and Man U. Most of the desi's are glory hunters, so good on you for something different.

This just stinks of infrerioty complex. You should support the team you enjoy and it worry about your "image"

Stoke City of all even Crystal Palace or Watford would have been better but luckily you didn't chose West Brom #TonyPulis

Football teams are part of your identity, when people support a team which they have no connection it is akin to brand loyalty like with Samsung or Apple.

Respect honestly. Great to see someone try and actually support a team for reasons other than trophies

Leeds United here since 1987!!!:-) haven't seen much success of late but we will be back!!!

It doesn't matter. People who worry about why someone supports a team has some own hidden complex of theirs.

If you enjoy watching a team you have the right to support them and be a fan. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

It's gotten pretty ridiculous to the extent that now people purposefully support teams that play crappy football just to look different. They irony in that is laughable.

There's nothing wrong with supporting a team that wins trophies if you enjoy that.

Ever since I started supporting Leeds as a five year old the club seemed to have plunged off a cliff.....

In shaa Allah, brother! I look forward to seeing Stoke City thrash those soft Gunners. :rp

Blackburn got promoted to the Premier League in 1991/1992 via the playoffs

The first season I followed them was 1992/1993, when they ended 4th
The second season they came 2nd
and in their 3rd season in the Premiership they became champions.

So given that I started following them before they finished 4th in their 1st season in the PL, my support was not due to their success :)

As good as Ronaldo or Messi may have been, they never really did much on a cold, wet Tuesday (or was it Wednesday) in Stoke, did they ?

:))

Although we did win the game, I see a lot of work that needs to be done especially on our defence and mid field game. They were continously pressing all throughout the 90 mins and if it wasn't for the brilliant effort of the Goal keeper I think the scoreline would've been quite different.

Can someone assist me to highlight what are the basic stats that one needs to know off in a game of football ??

Offensive: Goals, shots, assists, dribbles, key passes

Defensive: Tackles, interceptions, blocks, clearances, fouls

Team: Shots per game, possession %, yellow/red cards

And more....

Just ignore it all and focus on the score line, I say. :moyo

The stats towards the bottom of this graph (Possession%, Pass Success%, etc.) are the basic stats that generally give you a good idea of how a game panned out:

People have been throwing that phrase at me since the last two weeks.... I just igonore the haters brotha... Big Hearts I have :afridi

BTW if the game doesn't get stopped due to rain doesn't the playing field become 'dangerous' when it's all wet and slippery ??

A cold rainy night at Stoke is a very essential part of being a Stoke City fan. :afridi1

Usually they play on during the rain but on rare occasions where conditions are 'dangerous' i.e. thunderstorms or something of that sort, play may be stopped. But it's a very common sight to see football matches with plenty of rain, no Duckworth-Lewis and pointless walking on and off the field. :mv

In most top leagues including the Premier League, grounds have fantastic draining systems so play is unlikely to stop due to just rain or heavy rain.

Also......Murinho is a sore Loser !! Good on Sparky to put this jobber in his place !!

Stoke City was always a decent club and they made some good signings as well like Choupo Moting who was linked to Liverpool back in 2014 and everyone knows about Jese

Rose to prominence a under Coates of Bet365 which undermined their success somewhat. Owe everything to Pulis

How is the support coming along ahmedwaqas92? :yk2

Hughes took a big gamble by not playing his strongest team in the FA Cup. But I feel sacking him is the wrong move at this stage as there aren't many managers around who know the PL to help Stoke survive.
