Regarded as one of the best batting prospects in Pakistan since his first-class debut in November 2007, Umar Amin made his Test debut against Australia at Lord's in 2010 and played four Test matches during that tour. Whilst he is yet to feature in any further Test matches since that tour, Umar Amin has played fifteen ODIs and ten T20Is with varying amounts of success. Although he is yet to cement a place in the Pakistan team, he has been touted as a future Test and ODI captain and put in some excellent batting performances in the recently concluded Pakistan A tour of Sri Lanka.

In an exclusive interview with PakPassion.net, twenty-five year old Amin spoke about the reasons behind the slow pace of progress of his international career, the move from Port Qasim Authority to Sui Southern Gas, his desire to play at a consistent batting position and his determination to move ahead with his career.

India+v+Pakistan+Group+ICC+Champions+Trophy+Cpq7YRnVHlIl.jpg

PakPassion.net : You had a promising start to your international career in 2010 but seem to have lost your way a bit. What do you feel is the reason for that?

Umar Amin : There is no one else to blame but myself for the way things have turned out for me. It’s best for me to look at my own game and concentrate on the areas that I am weak in with a view to improving myself. It obviously did not help my situation as I only played international cricket in patches. I stayed with the team regularly for about a year in total and played about ten matches which isn’t that many games in itself. The problem with sitting out games is that it effects your confidence as you simply don’t get the continuity that you need to improve your game.

If you look at my statistics alone then they will appear to be pretty miserable as they show me averaging about nineteen in fifteen ODI games. However, when you consider the fact that I have played these games over a period of five years, you start to get an idea of what I am talking about. What you don’t see in these statistics is the fact that I had to go back into domestic cricket and compete hard with others to get back into the reckoning for the international side and then be asked to sit out of games. These type of disruptions to your career matter a lot and I do feel that a longer run in the team would have been more beneficial for me.

PakPassion.net : You make an excellent point about the effect on your career from the lack of continuity. Was this very disheartening in your case?

Umar Amin : If a player after being selected for a series is not assured of a place in the team as in you find out on the day of the game that you are playing, then your mind-set is completely different from a player who knows he will be playing all games in the series. Yes, as a professional you should be prepared to face such situations. However, if you are assured of a place in four or five games in the series and are told that you will bat at the same position then your mental approach and batting style is completely different.

If you look at my career where I have played 10 T20Is, you will note that there were four occasions where I did not get an opportunity to bat. I am a batsman who usually bats as an opener or at the number three position and I was put in a batting position where I couldn’t get a chance to bat. This pretty much explains what I mean about consistency and continuity. In fact, if you examine my ODI career, you will see that I have batted in almost all positions from opener to number seven.

PakPassion.net : Do you believe that chopping and changing the team in this way has a negative effect on players?

Umar Amin : If you arrive at the ground and you are told that you will be playing in a different position than what you are used to, then you will be totally confused and that will affect your performance. For instance, if you are told beforehand that you are to open the innings, then you will plan your innings whilst taking into account the opposition’s opening bowlers’ strengths and weaknesses. If the bowler’s inswing is good then you plan your innings accordingly and if his outswing is better, then you think of other tactics. You cannot be in a good state of mind if you are not sure about which position you will bat at next morning. I am saying this because it’s probably better to admit to this problem with clarity instead of sugar-coating it as this is an important factor to be considered.

PakPassion.net : The recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka with the A team where you were one of the leading run scorers in the 4 day games must have given your confidence a real boost?

Umar Amin : Yes, it was amazing but once again I stress that the real reason behind my success was that I always played at the same position during these four day games. I knew that I had been assured of the same batting position during these three matches and I planned my innings accordingly. My shot selection was based upon my batting position as were my tactics against opposition bowlers.

PakPassion.net : It would appear that your performances on the A tour of Sri Lanka seemed to have had no effect on the selectors for their choice of players for the senior tour of Sri Lanka?

Umar Amin : As far as I am concerned, my job is to work on my own game and performances and leave the selectors to do their own job. I am working on overcoming technical flaws in my batting and improving my fitness but above all, I am looking to bring some consistency to my performances. That’s all I am aiming for. If the selectors then feel that I have reached a stage where they are happy with my performances then they will select me for the national squad.

PakPassion.net : Are there any specific areas of improvement that you are focussing on?

Umar Amin : One area of focus for me is to try and bat at a consistent position in the team. As you know, the technique and mental make-up of an opener is completely different from that of a number seven batsman. Each batting position is totally different and requires a different preparation.

Apart from that, I am constantly discussing other minor technical issues such as feet movement etc with my coaches. In that regard, Rashid Latif has been very helpful and I am also checking my own video footage to look for improvements. Overall, I am feeling very good about my form and consistency in terms of performances. The last season was excellent for me as I did well in four day cricket and performed well in the One-Days for the departments, followed by the Pentangular tournament where I scored two centuries. When I was given a chance to play on the A tour of Sri Lanka, I scored 99 and 127 in two of the unofficial Test matches.

I definitely feel that I have more consistency in my game now. There is more maturity in my batting and I feel that I understand how to handle different kinds of game pressures and how to adapt to different situations.

PakPassion.net : Tell us about your move from Port Qasim Authority (PQA) to Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) team. What were the reasons behind this move?

Umar Amin : To be honest, this was a tough decision for me. I was well settled at PQA and I had some great support from Rashid Latif. What made me change my mind was that the offer from SSGC was very attractive and it’s a young team. The team will be led by Shoaib Malik and consists of guys who are willing to give their all for the team. This will obviously have a positive effect on my game as well as I will also be able to raise my game to that level. These are some of the factors that influenced my decision and so far, I am very happy with this move.

PakPassion.net : Given that batting positions three to seven are well settled in the Pakistan Test team, have you considered taking on the role of an opener in all three formats of the game?

Umar Amin : If you look at my career so far, you will note that I used to open for my regional team at the Under 19 level. So I started playing cricket as an opener. During the Under 19 selection process, three openers were chosen for Pakistan. These were Ahmed Shehzad, Shan Masood and myself. I was asked to sacrifice my slot to accommodate the other two as openers and was told to bat at number three which in real terms is not too different from playing as an opener but I made that change. Also note that of my eleven First-Class hundreds, six or seven have been scored as an opener. In fact, the score of 76 I recently made for SSGC in the recently concluded T20 Ramzan ul Mubarak Cup was scored with me playing as an opener.

PakPassion.net : Are you intending to open in the upcoming season in the four day and One-Day games?

Umar Amin : Let's see how this goes as ultimately, it’s down to the team management. When I was asked by them, I indicated my preference for the opening slot. Once the squads for the four day and One-Day games are finalized, the management will take a decision based upon their strategy. Most likely I will open in these games but if this is not possible, then I will be batting at number three.

PakPassion.net : Given the inconsistency of our Test openers, do you feel that there is a possibility that you could be considered for this position?

Umar Amin : I made a sacrifice when I gave up my opening slot at the Under 19 level. I have learnt a lot from my past mistakes and my aim is to not to make the same mistakes any more. I have made up my mind, and this I have put in to practice from the A tour with Sri Lanka, that I will pursue a course of action which is beneficial to my career alone and hopefully this will see me progress further.

PakPassion.net : A few months ago, your name was being touted as the future Test and ODI Captain but things have changed so quickly. How do you feel about that?

Umar Amin : From being talked about as captain of the team to being left out of the squad is a major shock and setback for me. I never gave it any serious thought and I told the media that my main focus was on my performance alone. I never gave captaincy any serious thought or currently hold aspirations of becoming captain. All I want is to raise my performance to a level that I become a permanent member of the Pakistan team. The decision to award the captaincy is with the PCB and when or if the time comes, I will give it serious thought but for the moment, this is not foremost in my mind.

PakPassion.net : There seems to be a real determination in your voice and what you are saying?

Umar Amin : I have said this before and will say it again. Like everyone else, I have made mistakes in my life which I have learnt from and will not repeat again. I have matured a lot and there is determination in me to move forward and I am totally focussed on my career. I think my best cricketing days are ahead of me and I am very determined to ensure that I do not let my career and hopes just drift away.

One of the greatest batting talents pakistan has produced. Kid oozes with class it's just a matter of him putting it all together and getting a consistent run.

Great person and a great player

Good Interview!

On occasion he does seem to fall into the trap of the usual blaming on lack of continuity, different batting positions etc. but I liked his stance in the last paragraph about learning from his mistakes and moving forward.

He seems to be technically correct but has shown lack of mental strength and consistency to succeed at international level. He still has time so I do hope he can make it but honestly Babar Azam, Haris Sohail and even Maqsood (in ODI's) should deservedly be ahead of him in the pecking order

Great person and a great player

He looked brilliant in England in 2010 - Really wanted him to succeed on that tour.

but why he cannot make good run with so much talent , did not impress even in Faisalabad ramzan t20

Does seem to blame a lack of continuity/batting position a bit too much ala Umar Akmal, but at least acknowledges that he hasn't done well and that he needs to improve and learn from his mistakes. He really does play some good looking strokes, would be great if he can become mentally stronger and establish himself in the team

this guy has had so many oppertunities that no pakistan player has ever had in his life , thanku mr. amin we dont want your services we have enough young talent coming through like rizwan , babar azam , sami aslam , fakhar zaman , ali asad etc and even saad nasim is better than you and if usman salahuddin was given the oppertunities you got he would have established himself. Please go amd play from zimbabawe , we have so many people like bazid khan ,ayub dogar , naumanullah , najaf shah , sami naizi ,rizwan ahmed who have had one or two games only.

.my batting position wah wah...grow up. A real talent scores despite the odds.

Smh at everyone coming at him. The kid has constantly been played down the order when in reality he is a top order batsmen. He's a Great fielder and can bowl a bit as well.

He's being mis treated by throwing him in at 6/7 he needs to open or play at 3 and be given a few series and when he's on a roll these people will gladly jump on the bandwagon (:

i saw him once open the innings for pak in an ODI in SA and he was looking good than the regular opener shehzad in that match..he would definitely be better opener than hafeez..

Good interview but the funny part is that players who have been complete faliures at evey position at int level are asking for a consistent chance at the same position and they are being given that chance and on the other hand when a former captain of pak asks for a consistent run so the fans don't want it to happpen and even when he returns and makes a 100 at no3 so he is played at 2 different positions in the next 2 games!

With Hafeez and Shehzad not exactly setting the world alight, I wonder if we will eventually see Umar being given a chance to open in Test cricket.

Everyboday says the same thing. Perform bro. Perform.

saj bhai im sure he will be a good choice to open the innings in ODIs but not for tests at the moment, which he can fail and been thrown for another 3 years..have u watched the last ODI of the series which pak won in SA in 2013, he was given the chance to open and Maqsood was at no.3 and both of them played good cricketing shots even after losing that time regular opener shehzad very early. Umer amin pulled a six to deep point on morne morkel's delivery... then after that inns he was not given a chance to open again in ODIs but persisted with shehzad..

He's some class.

He has been amazing in domestic and on A tours since the last one year at least.

Was a beast in Pentangular Cup, then on SL tour, and most people realize he has good potential, but was not confident enough. Now I think he has gained that confidence.

I wouldn't mind if Shehzad is dropped for Amin and Aslam comes in for Hafeez. Good openers.

Had so much hope from him.. and he has failed every single time.

How is it that these same blokes are lions in domestics but meek kittens in international..

Amin is a beauty to watch, is probably the best stroke-maker and timer in Pakistan. Shehzad is a pre-meditator who doesn't even move his feet.

What every time? Played only 13 ODIs in 5 years.

Still young and deserves persevering with. Also offers occasional bowling option, his golden arm got a few wickets in England tour of 2010

The mental fortitude has been completely absent in his career so far. It boggles the mind that we throw around adjectives like 'class' and 'talent' on such a shoddy body of work so far.
He will get his chance when he deserves it, I suppose, but to me he looks like a pretty soft player.

My friend played with Umar Amin for walsall last year said Umar Amin is a very overrated player n that he couldnt play fast bowling.

See, I somewhat agree, but the problem is that everyone wants to either open or bat at #3, so idk how the PCT would accommodate him.

He was being played at wrong position. He should open for Pakistan with Azhar Ali

I want him to be in team, just for the sake of his classic lefty batting, I enjoy watch him bat. Poor man's Gower.

He is simply not an intl-level player. One of the worst batsmen to come out of Pakistan.

Ahh, the great batting prodigy of some PPers :))

Happens with every player we have. This time next year lads, this time next year.

Surely he is better than Shan in tests and Selfie in ODI!

Beggars cant be choosers....Let him in

Given the competition for places in the middle order, Umar would be best advised to try his luck as an opener in ODIs. At the moment Rizwan, Haris Sohail Maqsood, Malik, Hafeez are providing very tough competition.

Only if u could pass this Amin for opener in ODIs tactic/strategy to the selectors. Or else the selectors and the mgmt are too thick and stubborn to even think like this.

Pakistan should recall Umar Amin

Tbh I think Pakistan should bring back Umar Amin. He's a stylish left handed player. Many people term him as a failure in International cricket but how could you say someone is a failure when he has played 20 odd games over 5 years and players like U Akmal gets chance after chance.I think he can bring stability to Pakistan team and tbh seeing the current situation of Pak LOI sides.I think Pakistan will not go far in upcoming ICC events and might have to play against us in ICC World Cup 2019 qualifier in Bangladesh

Totally.

Tired of Rizwan, Maqsood and all.

Give technique and class a consistent chance.

Honestly. He should get another shot at International cricket. He was 21 and was immediately told to play swing bowling in alien conditions back in 2010. Needs a proper chance. Pakistan have nothing to lose

I'd play him at number 3, he has a sound technique, once he gets acclimatized to international cricket he should be able to fire

Dude, how come you're speaking so much sense. Because people don't often get this simple basic rule about developing a batsman.

That's how countries with a batting culture develop world class bats.

Give him a long run, he'll deliver. Only played about 13 ODIs over 5 years.

Yes and it was the fault of the PCB

Jokes aside I was just pointing out the irony of your post when half the population on PP want Babar Azam to debut against England next year in Tests.

How could you test a career after just 15 games? Just look at Buttler,He had average of less than 29 in his first 15 matches but England persisted with him and gave him chances and right now he is the most dynamic player in the world and you could see today that how Tanvir feared bowling him in the super over.

Personally I wouldn't mind him - but take into the consideration that Haris Sohail is also not in the team who is above Umar Amin any day.

Given that Haris Sohail is fit, he would walk into the team over Umar Amin.

Nah, Amin has the potential to frustrate us just as much as Ahmed Shahzad does and he was useless in the CT 2013.

Umar Amin should show consistency while playing for Domestic teams as well as Pakistan A.

He still isn't consistent.

I don't think his international career is finished. He is still 26.

Next time he should be given a chance should be afters coring consistent runs for domestic teams as well as pakistan A. Otherwise another chance will go begging.

Now his averages have improved than before. FC 39 , List A 33 , T20 30.

Also his T20 strike rate is 123 while I expected him to have SR like Haris Sohail but no he has far better SR.

I repeat don't give him a chance unless he scores consistent run.

Let's choose a guy that was so bad that had he not been a pro, he would have been dropped from a Birmingham league team.

Not as bad as you presume.

Average 39 , 33 and 30 in Fc cricket list A and T20 cricket.

Made a 64* yesterday batting at number 4 while his all team got out on paltry 124.

Yes lets pick a bat who internationally struggles to get past teens n 20s

He isnt doing all too well in domestics , though i think he was not handled well when he was given his chance in test matches. He was played in bowling friendly conditions against anderson and co without a break.

In odis its a big no no.

Hehe.
Fans be like 'please....make....it...stop'
'give me another dose of delusion by bringing in another player who has no logical reason for a comeback'

The obsession with aesthetics continue. If you score 20 runs on average, nobody cares whether you score those beautifully or ugly.

He is worse, can't play the moving ball or rotate the strike, besides these problems he is brilliant.

Amin is class. He needs to find a way of scoring runs at international level

Did I say it was PCB's fault or anyone else's? It was his first International match EVER unlike Babar who will hopefully have played a few ODIs before then.

Well the statement that he was made to play on alien wickets slightly points towards the PCB. Who selected him me, you or the PCB?

Anyways on topic of Babar Tests and ODI's are vastly different a statement Shikhar Dhawan would probably attest.

Shehzad
Shahzaib Hasan
Umar Amin
Asad Shafiq
Umar Akmal
Sohaib Maqsood
Adnan Akmal

Should be our top 7

Sikhar Dhawan's problem is with home and away. Not tests or ODIs. Which is quiet common for SC players

I would rather give Umar Siddiq or Saad Ali or Agha Salman or some other new talent a go instead of him!

Absolutely, he was discarded too soon, a classic lefty with a very good technique and now have matured enough and has been performing well. Particularly with Harris's future in doubt due to injuries, we need a player like Umar Amin in Pak team.

Shouldn't have been dropped after he showed promise opening the innings in South Africa. Was playing their pacers effortlessly before he fell to a really good catch. Our management has difficulty identifying talent.

But right now there are other batsmen ahead of him in line.

He played really well in that T20 against WI but apart from that he's been well below average/appalling.

I'm very confident that if given a proper chance, he can translate his potential & talent into international level performances.

Haris, Amin, Sami, Babar, Umar. So much potential in one place. ;)

At least one of all the above noticed this. He was sent to open in the dead rubber against SA where he out scored the regular opener Shehzad. And that pull shot for six I still remember. He would have been a good opener. Exactly PCB is very poor identifying talents.

Only very few batsman are given a consistent run of 20 games as an opener in Pakistan just because of the fans can't digest defeat and also the fragile middle order. Sami aslam didn't get a proper run as opener and same goes with umar Amin. Even if umar Amin got selected, waqar will not play him as opener he is another dumb fellow to identify potential talents especially batsman. Whatmore gave him the chance to open then selectors doesn't select him. Seniors get away with ducks, 10s and 20s, but debutants need to score 100 to keep their places alive. Ridiculous

Dude that six off philander right? It was beautiful, pure timing, it was just lightly hit and went all the way.

There lies the difference between pcb and a board like bcci. Rough example, Rohit not getting it in the middle order for quite some time and then given a consistent try at the top. Amin could have gone the same way, because he did look different opening than he did coming in at 154/6.

That six was one of the finest shots played by a PAK batsman in the last five or so years.

Totally.

Tired of Rizwan, Maqsood and all.

Like we did with Shafiq?

I would rather play a half-fit, injured Haris Sohail over Amin.....

Haris and Amin are not competing. Both deserve to be in the team, but obviously Haris has been a far better performer.

Fawad can get a chance in Tests, but no place in ODIs. Not sure how long he'll last in Tests, too.

Fawad Alam deserives to play ahead of Amin.

fawad!!! u must be kidding... didnt u see the aussies caught him like the rabbit caught in headlights...

a batsman with zero timing is what fawad is... he can take 20 singles but when needed to hit one boundary he has no shot to play... cannot drive, pull, cut, come down the pitch to hit six....i would not even take him in any domestic team...

Even in the absence of Haris, I'd prefer any of these left handed batsmen over him: Fakhar Zaman, Sami Aslam, Umar Siddiq, Fawad Alam, Naved Yasin, Imam Ul Haq & Imad Wasim.

I'm not saying he should be discarded totally. But he needs to be more consistent at domestic level before he is picked for the national side again.
