Mohammad Asghar shot to prominence in the Pakistan Super League for KPK with his wicket-taking ability and excellent control. A left-arm spinner who can turn the ball sharply both ways, Asghar appears to have a bright future ahead of him in Pakistan cricket. Speaking exclusively to PakPassion.net, Asghar talked about the Pakistan Super League, the benefit of playing alongside the likes of Darren Sammy, working with Andy Flower and also spoke about the Pakistan Cup and his plans and hopes for the future.

PakPassion.net : What was your experience of playing at the Pakistan Super League (PSL)?

Mohammad Asghar : It was a tremendous experience playing in such a high profile tournament. What was most exciting for me was to play alongside some big names in international cricket which included players and coaches from all over the world. To share the dressing room with such top players from Pakistan and other parts of the world was very special and I did learn a lot from that. I cannot tell you how amazing that was and still feel proud that I was part of such a tournament. I know that many others wanted to take part in the PSL but could not so I feel very fortunate that I was picked up by Peshawar Zalmi for their team.

PakPassion.net : What was it like playing alongside international players like Darren Sammy, Shaun Tait and Brad Hodge?

Mohammad Asghar : The advice and attention I got from these players was very special and just the time they took to talk to me was very much appreciated. In fact Darren Sammy gave me some very specific comments about my diet and fitness. He told me that hard-work is important in any cricketer’s work life but the role of having the right diet is crucial as it effects fitness as well. What really impressed me was the interest they took in me. Brad Hodge and Darren Sammy, in particular, came up to me at the beginning of the tournament and told me that that they had heard a lot of good things about me before PSL and had been very impressed by my reputation. They also told me that I was a great prospect and my progress was very important for the future of Pakistan cricket. Of course when such experienced players compliment you like that, you cannot help being filled with pride which I am until today.

PakPassion.net : As a young player what did you take away from the PSL?

Mohammad Asghar : I don’t know where to start! Let me first repeat what I said before. It’s the experience of playing alongside or against some of the top players of the world which is indescribable in words. I have obviously played alongside Pakistan’s top players in our domestic competitions but this was a whole new experience. The other important lesson that I took away from this tournament was how one handles pressure in tough games. I believe any youngster who can learn to absorb this can go far in the future. I was lucky to have taken this on-board against some of the toughest opposition I have ever played against.

PakPassion.net : Were you surprised at just how well the tournament went for you?

Mohammad Asghar : As a player, you always strive for your best and you should expect better performances from yourself. So I expected myself to do well and I suppose eleven wickets with the best economy rate for my team in one of the top Twenty20 tournaments in the world is a good achievement. A lot of people did not think that I would be able to compete against the very best and pick up wickets but I did that and am very happy about it. Having said that, even I didn’t expect to take wickets of top players like Shane Watson and Andre Russell but am obviously very pleased with the result. The challenge for me is to continue and improve upon what I achieved at the PSL as I have gained a lot of confidence from playing at that level.

PakPassion.net : You've become a household name all of a sudden, how does that feel?

Mohammad Asghar : I am very happy that my name is being mentioned in that way. I had already played and performed well at the domestic level so my name was known but my reputation has reached new heights since the PSL. All through the PSL tournament, I was being encouraged by my family and friends to perform better and I am sure I didn’t disappoint them either. It is true that if one performs in a big tournament like the PSL, people will recognize you for your talent and this is what has happened. To be honest, I am amazed by the popularity I have experienced and I can only thank the Almighty for His blessings and the fact that I am where I am today.

PakPassion.net : What advice did you get from Andy Flower?

Mohammad Asghar : I was constantly receiving advice from coaches and Andy Flower who was the assistant coach also gave me useful advice on improving my bowling and batting. He was really impressed by my bowling and told me that he hadn’t seen many bowlers spin the ball in to the batsmen as I could and he really praised me for that as did some of the television commentators at that time.

PakPassion.net : How was the overall atmosphere and the quality of wickets at the PSL?

Mohammad Asghar : The PSL was really a brilliant tournament for all concerned. For me personally, I really enjoyed bowling on Dubai wickets as they were conducive to spin bowling but if you ask me about enjoying myself in front of large crowds, then nothing beats playing in Sharjah. That was truly a different experience and a great atmosphere. I also remember the games in Sharjah for some great memories especially when I took the wicket of an excellent player like Shane Watson on my third delivery of the game and then later claimed the wicket of Andre Russell who is an expert player in this format of the game.

PakPassion.net : Amazing to think you were close to being selected for the Asia Cup and World Cup Twenty20?

Mohammad Asghar : What can I say apart from that it would have been great if I had had the chance to serve my country in these two prestigious tournaments which would be a fantastic opportunity for any player. But it didn’t happen so I am going to continue to do my best and work harder for the future.

PakPassion.net : What are your thoughts on the Pakistan Cup and how well your team have done in that tournament?

Mohammad Asghar : This was a great tournament for Pakistan players. After the PSL it was the biggest thing to happen to Pakistan cricket. It was the highest level tournament to be played in Pakistan with our top players playing in this. I do not believe that the standard of performances was any less than the PSL and we are all proud to have participated in it. I know that the senior players always make a difference but what really impressed me in this tournament was the performances of our younger players. I know that some of these players did not get a chance to play in the PSL but they were looking at this tournament as a way to impress the decision makers so that they can get picked for the next edition of the PSL.

As a Pakistani it makes me proud to be part of such a tournament where the younger and inexperienced players are doing so well. I am also very proud of my team, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who were winners of the Pakistan Cup. As you know, no team can reach the final and win such a high profile tournament unless they have the talent and hard work to show for it and this team has all those qualities.

PakPassion.net : Are you looking forward to selection for the Pakistan senior team or Pakistan A team for the tour to England and what now for your future?

Mohammad Asghar : It would be great to be selected for even the Pakistan A squad for the tour of England. Whether that happens or not, I know that I have to continue to work hard and not give up. As long as I maintain my fitness, with the Almighty’s help and hard-work, I will be able to reach whatever goals I have set myself. I have lots to learn but I'm happy with my progress.

Very good interview, can see the PSL has its advantages. Hope he maintains his fitness. Think he will play for Pakistan one day nd hopefully it's this summer against England.

So much for PSL being a "holiday" as Waqar said. It looks like its been a great experience for youngsters like Asghar who got to rub shoulders with top coaches and intl players.

Hope we see him in England for at least the A team.

I think certain players didn't follow the fitness regime that's what he meant, but seems as though some of the younger players learnt a lot from PSL.

Hodge, Flower and Sammy impressed by him. Hope selectors are too!

so excited about this new generation of cricketers!

i think waqar said that certain players treated the PSL like a holiday. Nothing wrong with that statement imo

Good to see Asghar named in the boot camp for Abbottabad.

With Zulfiqar Babar not getting any younger, Asghar could be the ideal replacement for him once he gets some more experience under his belt.

I really do hope that Asghar can make it into the team, he looks the real deal, we aren't short on talent like some people make it out to be. We keep churning them up.

Top prospect for Pakistan this lad.I just hope he holds on to the basics of left arm spin bowling(or for that matter spin bowling) which is to flight the ball and decieve the batsman in the air unlike the darters that Pak has produced off late.

Having seen him from a year or so(from that T20 cup) some things that have stricken me about his bowling and some things he needs to work on:

1)He needs to use his back a little bit more.He is someone who just depends a lot on his arm rotation. He needs to bends his back more in his follow through because what it does is he can get a little more bounce and kick from the surface and that can come handy on the surfaces where the ball doesn't deviate sideways. Also, with his height he should get a bit more bounce by using his back a bit more.

2)He needs to use the crease much often to create angles for himself.Sometimes he gets monotonous by just coming wide of the crease. It actually is the case with almost every bowler these days-not using the crease.Zafar Gohar is also someone who bowls every ball from wide of the crease.Asghar needs to use the crease more often to create the angles to his advantage and use every possible way to trap certain batsmen.

All in all a top quality classy bowler who has got the ability to decieve the batsmen in the air and also has got a sharp arm bowl.Just hope he doesn't get stagnant in the mess that Pak domestic cricket is at this point in time.

Wishing him all the best for future.

My exact thoughts I hope he doesn't try to become a darter like our recent spinners.

This lad's ability to spin the ball so much and both ways is a real asset.

If he keeps his feet on the ground, works hard and keeps his focus on cricket then he can become a real asset for Pakistan.

He has the passion which has been lacking in some of our cricketers.

Definitely but I just hope that passion isn't replaced by complacency which tends to happen with many Pakistani cricketers.

Should be on England tour as back up for Yasir Shah, and than the starting spinner for the LOI matches

Every time I see this young man bowl he impresses me.

His control, his ability to turn the ball and his temperament.

What a superb talent he is.

Was always curious about his batting. If he is to break into LOIs, he will need to offer something with his bat. As Nawaz/Imad are handy in that regard.

Doesn't offer much with the bat which is why Nawaz and Imad might get a sustained run in the side ahead of him - he is an excellent bowler though. Should definitely get a chance sometime soon.

Oh so this is an old bumped thread Saj bhai, he seems a nice guy though,

Specialist left arm spinners have no future in ODIs in todays day and age.

I dont even like the idea of playing Nawaz and Imad together.

Not many other good spinners in Pakistan atm besides the slow left-armers. Imad, Nawaz, Zafar and Asghar are probably all in contention, variety isn't there. Yasir not good for LOIs while others like Ajmal won't be in future plans (though he wants to make a comeback alright).

I still cannot believe that T20 performers like M. Asghar and Shahzaib Hasan were not selected for the t20's. Especially knowing that WI has issues against genuine spinners.

But in T20I cricket, they have a big role to play, Asghar should play T20I cricket, if not ODI cricket, a fantastic T20 bowler, better than Nawaz, Zafar and Imad in this format.

Good work by Asghar - picked 7 wickets in the recently concluded 1st Unofficial Test against Zimbabwe A

2nd best spinner in the country at the moment. After Yasir. But, we're good at wasting the peak of cricketers.

Asghar did well but, he bowled far more overs than any other bowler to get 7 wickets.

Definitely has a bright future this lad.

Zulfi better be looking over his shoulder....

He returned early from the BPL after agreeing with his BPL team regarding an early return to Pakistan.

He told me that his BPL team were happy with his efforts despite only playing 2 matches there.

Hint that he will tour Aus.

Has UBL called him for their imp knock out matches of QEA ?

Or is he in contention to replace Nawaz in the Test squad ?

Or he wasn't expecting to get any more BPL games so he preferred FC Cricket ?

This guy is a must in UAE for tests. He should be paired with yasir. I think their combo would be as deadly as ashwin and jadeja in india.

Too young for international cricket. Needs to toil away in domestic cricket just like Zulfiqar Babar did. Albeit not as long. Should be picked in 2-3 years.

There is no such the thing as being to young for international cricket. If they're they should be picked regardless of how young they are.

Like I said last year, he's quality and should be picked.

The brainless selectors picked up Nawaz instead. Inzi doesn't have any sense either.

Definitely has a bright future this lad.

At his age, might be a big task to ask lest Baba Jee pulls a muscle or two doing that :-)

Misbah logic... take players only if they are above 30 and enough experience... If that is the logic we wouldn't have seen sachin, murali, kohli, wasim, waqar and inzi... just look at the quality in all three facets of the game and if he has outperformed his counterparts at the same stage who are already in the national team then what is stopping to select them...

ASHWIN, R.JADEJA, MISHRA, PANDYA are all products of IPL

Then why not the same from PSL as it has given shrajeel, hasan ali already... this year it should be

SHADAB, USAMA, HASAN KHAN, ZAMAN, TALAT, YAMIN and BUTT next products of PSL for this year...

He is good , good turn and a very brave spinner.

Where is zafar gohar , that guy can spin the ball more than asghar does.

I still feel that Asghar at the moment is more suited to T20 and ODI cricket and needs to develop more in first-class cricket.

I wonder what he did wrong to not get a chance in the Test series against Sri Lanka.

Haris Sohail proved that another spinner would have been more than useful.

I have hardly seen Mickey talk about him, looks like he hasn't impressed him in the nets.

Should have gotten a chance. Very very disappointed that he didn't get a chance. He would make a good partner for Yasir. Yasir can attack what Asghar would keep it tight and keep the pressure on the batsmen.

If Haris can get 3 in one over, imagine what a guy who was one of the leading wicket-takers in the PSL that took place HERE in Dubai do???

But then why take him. Why not let him play in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy instead of carrying drinks for the past 2 weeks.

I am not sure if i can trust Mickey's judgement on players. Sohail Khan, Imran Khan have been completely ostracized. Is he now doing the same to Ashgar where he is letting his personal feelings come in way of what is best for the team?

Umar Akmal is kicked out of the team for fitness issues but so many unfit and injured players have been selected in the team?

Not much to go by as even Nawaz has run havoc in T20 cricket in the UAE, despite being a club level cricketer.

Brilliant Spell from Ashgar today. 4-32 in Departmental ODI Cup helping his team win the game. The guy progess has been brilliant.

Good bowling so far for Balochistan in National T20 - taken 1 wicket so far

It's a travesty how Asghar continues to get ignored. He's the only left-arm spinner in Pakistan (that I know off) who actually gets the ball to turn prodigiously.

Why wasn't Mohammad Ashgar given a chance

I never understood for a lot of the test series Mohammad Ashgar was selected but never got to make his debut, I know theirs others in the pecking order who might be better but why was he not ever given a chance, if they were going to give youngsters a go for this series he should have been tried

At the same time kashif bhatti was selected but didn't get a game either

Mohammad Asghar in the wicket also vs MCC

Bowled well today.

4 23 2

He's lost his way of late which is a shame really as he looked good at the start of his career.

He is a long term prospect and needs to be backed and supported. He could play in all three formats. Needs to be given confidence. I think he is a better bowler than Zafar Gauhar (who is also very good but Asghar has more variety). He has generally shown really good control in the National T20 even though his figures don't reflect it.
