"I rate Asad Shafiq very highly and I still feel his best days are ahead of him" : Mickey Arthur

ABU DHABI: Disgruntled coach Mickey Arthur demanded his players toughen up and seize key moments in Test matches after sloppy batting handed New Zealand an away series win over Pakistan for the first time in 49 years.

New Zealand pulled off a come-from-behind 123-run victory in the third and final Test in Abu Dhabi on Friday to end their long wait for a 2-1 series win.

Pakistan had dismissed the Kiwis for 153 in the first innings of the first Test in Abu Dhabi only to lose by a narrow four-run margin.

Pakistan bounced back by winning the second Test in Dubai by an innings and four runs but again failed to build a sizeable lead in the first innings of the third Test, a fact Arthur believes cost them the series.

"We missed opportunities and despite winning most of the sessions in the two losses we could not grab the moments to force a win," Pakistan coach Arthur told AFP.

"It was our series to win but we ended up as the losing side and that's highly disappointing."

Arthur said Pakistan not gaining big leads in the first and third Tests was crucial.

"We have to have a look at our batting on the last day and that is tough in the UAE," said Arthur.

Pakistan lost all ten wickets on the final day in both the defeats. They have now lost all ten wickets on the final day six times since Arthur joined in May 2016.

Apart from the three occasions in Abu Dhabi -- against Sri Lanka last year and twice against New Zealand in this series -- they also collapsed at Birminghm, Hamilton and Melbourne -- all in 2016.

Arthur said he backs his players, especially under-fire senior batsmen Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq.

"The quality is there as they are the best players in Pakistan who are working very very hard and I back them to the hilt," said Arthur.

"But we need to be tougher in the crucial moments and that comes to us grabbing moments and being tough and we could not do this in this series which is disappointing."

He added: "I will defend Asad and Azhar to the hilt. Asad is a wonderful player. I rate him very highly and I still feel his best days are ahead of him."

Arthur now hopes Pakistan can do well in South Africa, a country where they have won only two Tests and were thrashed 3-0 on their last tour in 2013.

"I reckon we can go to South Africa and do well," said Arthur.

"I believe and trust in these players, we have got some very talented cricketers and some good young players.

"We need to nail down our good positions which we are not doing and that's the problem area."

The first of three Tests starts in Centurion from December 26.

There's a quote attributed to Einstein that I cannot seem to recall.

Mickey has no idea about test matches. This was the same guy who played 3 quicks and one spinner in India for crying out loud. He is a decent odi coach but nothing else. I can freaking make an XL for tests that would mop the floor with his team

Now I am really beginning to question this man's intelligence

Doesn't matter what happens, technique is technique... and technique's best days are ahead of him :asad1:ma

I have been a silent supporter of the coach. But this I can't support.

There is something about Asad and Azhar. Every coach falls in love with them.

Remember how Waqar pushed Asad to do well in ODI's? He got like gazillion chances before 2016.

Because they keep quiet and do as they are told.

What coach wouldn’t love them?

33 years old in a couple of months, played 61 Test matches in a row for Pakistan (no Pakistani has played more consecutive Tests) but average still below 40. I really don't see when he is going to go to the next level...

Generally, you have your best days between 28-32 and he is about to pass that range.

The man is pretty much 33 and his best days are behind him - only down south from here.

Shafiq at 33, while Mickey Arthur says his best days are ahead of him. So by that notion then Fawad Alam at 33 too might just have some of his best days ahead as well.

Asad Shafiq is a mediocre batsman. Very Very inconsistent . Problem is that Pakistan lack good batsmen up coming .

Mickey is a good coach , but not a great one. Like most foreign coaches he lacks understanding of specialist spinners. He preffers darters , instead of quality spinners.

Oh Mickey, I suggest not to make such big claims please.

I sincerely think the best way forward for Pakistan team is to accept the reality of world rankings. We are an average team who may occassionaly win due to individual brilliance.

May take us 5 years to get back on track. We just need to make sure there are no controversies in between.

This is what a coach should say about a young player aged 20-27. This guy is on the other side of 30 now with at most 3-4 more years. How many more days does he have in his career, let alone the best of days?

Don't agree with Arthur here. Asad is someone who will have 1 good knock in a series than perform inconsistently throughout the rest of the series. That's how he is so I don't see why posters are losing the plot over his performances. That's his capability.

You might rate him highly but in reality he isn't the match winning crowd pulling batsman that you might think he is.
He's unable to dominate the bowling once set which means he'll never be a great batsman simply not good enough to be above average playing 70 80 tests and still averaging 38-39 isn't setting high standards for younger batsmen which means the team will continue to be stuck in a rut.

Pak need to pick players who can take responsibilty and have passion to win games for the country.
Look at virat kohli his sole aim when he enters the field is to win it India, his centuries are by-products.
With most players in Pak its the opposite, they only play for themselves. They take no pride in playing for country. This culture has to go.

His best days are now. He's an average batsmen many of our fans again talk up as being brilliant.

so at 33 years old, 8 years of test cricket and 60 odd consecutive tests shafiqs best days are ahead of him? had ho gaye hai
Is he being a bit dim or does he reckon fans are stupid?

I suppose he is trying to be positive which is part of his job. I am hoping that the players must have received a dressing down behind closed doors. Disagree with him completely on Shafiq though.

There is nothing Mickey can do now. Unfortunately both Azhar and Asad so called " best " Pakistan batsmen are very mediocre batsmen.

Asad is the best bat in the country..too bad he lacks self-beieve. Really needs to step up and prove his worth. One innings in a series is jus not good enough. No idea why most of our batsmen end up bottling despite good performances behind them.

Asad reminds me of M Yousuf who disappeared when it got tough...leaving it all to Inzy.

But at least Yousuf could pile on the runs?

Not the best sign when you're saying something like this about a player who has been in the Pakistan team for a very very long time. I think Shafiq is good enough but he just needs to be more consistent

Shafiq is a pretty mediocre player. If you are satisfied with you then please be satisfied with no. 7 raking in tests.

Shafiq is the golden boy of the Pak cricket establishment. Will never be dropped regardless of output in this series.

_20181226_151533.jpg

Last two years 8 zeros

28 scores of 30 or under out of 47 innings.

At his age and experience most of the batsmen in the world enjoy their peak batting period but this guy is struggling to score and still somehow clinging onto his place.

Those days will never come

Worst investment ever. Given the amount of matches played in SC, I believe 90% of our preforming first class batsmen can match his average or even better.

9 or 10 failures coming up before usual 1 decent score.

He is trash and if you don't realise that after the 60+ matches his played, most in Asia and at no. 6 (reserved for inexperienced, A/R's or youngsters), then there is no hope!

Pak deserve to be humiliated, when they persist with rubbish 32 yr olds like him.

I think its about time Mickey Arthur does a Wahab Riaz with the likes of Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq. These guys were expected to take over the Younis Khan role and they have to the contrary set zero inspiration for the rest of the younger batsmen in the squad. Enough of the sugar coating.

Azhar Ali as it is is said to be suffering from a serious degenerative knee condition which doctors have said will reduce his international career and longevity while Asad Shafiq's lack of temperament is now catching up.

Part of our woeful record lately is also this clueless Mickey Arthur.

He absolutely loves Shafiq, Malik, Imad, Sarfraz.

Asad Should gracefully announce his retirement from test cricket. He represented his country for 8-9 years at top level and he had his moments, albeit very few. He is on verge of his 33rd birthday and usually, as a result of poor record keeping our cricketers are mostly recorded under aged.

He has been very mediocre as a player but he could earn some respect with a timely retirement here.

When will this garbage batsman be thrown out?

His acha bacha personality goes down well with the coaches, captains and selectors, so I expect him to be playing until he is 50 yrs old!

Trouble with all Pakistan coaches is - after a while, they buy into the myth.

They see compliant seniors, working hard, playing absolutely correctly in the nets, eager to improve - and these coaches start adopting them as their kids. Happened from Lawson onwards.

Shafiq will work extra hard in the nets between the 1st test and second and will be back with a 50 when we have already lost the test.

Drop him please from the next match , but knowing our thick tank, they will drop Fakhar for Harris :shafiq2

I think our management needs to take a bold decision to drop him. It'll be a wake up call for him as well as beneficial for our batting lineup.nobody is above the betterment of the team. But knowing our team and management that is all wishful thinking.

He should be the first name to be dropped from team sheet for a very long period , even before Imam and sirfraz .Whenever he is at crease , there is always a feeling that he is gonna out on next ball. He literally oozes zero confidence , neither can play in UAE nor outside uae .I ’ll put my money on hasan to score more than shafiq at almost every time .

I would say replace him for Haris for the next match but what's the point :shafiq2:ma

Imam, sarfaraz and shafiq need to be sacked as of immediate effect. Haris to replace Shafiq and Rizwan to replace Sarfaraz. Sadly no replacement for mediocre Imam and Shan in the squad. Ideally should be replaced by Saad Ali and Usman Salahuddin.

Like I've said..

Mickey Arthur is a major reason we're at number 7 now.

He's tactically very inept, and has no idea what player is past it, or not going to perform.

Yet he sticks to our seniors baggage and defends them.

Absolutely loves Shafiq and Yasir.

Praise from Mickey Arthur

"Asad Shafiq played two innings that were significant, everyone else sort of chipped in along the way but we didn't get enough runs"

Strange that he thinks those innings were 'significant'..... we lost both games. In what way were they significant, other than ensuring he stays in the team and doesn't bother scoring runs until his place in the team is under doubt again.

"Asad Shafiq played two innings that were significant, everyone else sort of chipped in along the way but we didn't get enough runs"

How were inns significant when in 1st inns when we need to be on level terms or have a lead and shafiq failed.

Shafiq needs to be kicked out not just for the team but to save the next generation of Pakistani cricketers from selfish mentality.

Next generation of players coming in seeing Babar and Shafiq would be vying for personal milestones than looking to push team towards the target. It is a dangerous scenario and can cost Pakistan a lot in future.

He can't bat on certain pitches but his shameless approach of leaving the team high and dry, to fend for itself has proven he is incapable. He is a senior with 70 test but one of the worst seniors I've seen.

Kicking Asad Shafiq out will send a powerful message for young cricketers that first priority is the team and country, if you take stand for the team your place will be automatically settled.

"Asad Shafiq played two innings that were significant, everyone else sort of chipped in along the way but we didn't get enough runs"

That's pretty much sums up his mentality and knowledge of the game. He may be a international coach but for whatever reason he said it (favoritism/knowledge/ignorance) that's very pathetic to say the least. These people think that fans don't see the game and they are dumb like him, they can come out and say whatever they want and we will take it.

Everyone is trying to scratch each others back and saving their jobs no one have the guts to take the steps and do something about this sorry state of affairs..

I was absolutely fumed when he raised his bat after scoring a mere 88 runs and Pakistan was trailing at that point.

Arthur is himself being screwed by the setup led by Selector Inzamam ul Haq. Arthur absolutely has made terrible decisions and they have only gotten more worse, since Ehsan Mani was made chairman. Mani lionized chief selector Inzamam to shape the team. Inzamam is running the show protecting Shafiq, Sarfraz, Hafeez, Imam and Azhar who should'nt be in the 4 day A team.

not sure who is protecting who, news also out there that Sarfi is not man enough to ask for his players or make his XI. Arthur approach to the test matches is horrible he didn't learn that we need 2 solid spinners in UAE then what else is left to discuss.
Inzi on the other hand did big talks when he retired talked about domestic setup and doing this that but nothing happened when given the power.

Plumb

No doubt , everybody is responsible here including Arthur. Not just the 2 spinners, Amir selected in this squad was due to Arthur over bowling coach Azhar and Sarfraz insistence of Mir Hamza, who they were carrying in the UAE tour. Arthur support for Amir cost Pakistan wickets with the new bowl, Amir failed to swing-in the right hander and alongside him other bowlers also regressed.

Still the bowlers are the only reason we are competing with top 3 teams of the world. They did most of the job bringing Pakistan in the match. It was batsmen who collapsed again and again.

Arthur has made tactical blunders but the real decision making is coming from the squad selections even before team management is involved.

It all started after Aus series when Fakhar Zaman scoring 2x50s in test was dropped for fitness [not injury] and told to report to NCA.

Hafeez is forced into the side alongwith Imam to open the innings. Result he fails repeatedly and retires in the last innings.

No reserve selected for middle order in startt of SA series had pretty much showed how the series will end. And he announced it before the 5th day of the last test where Pakistan collapsed.

Arthur, Sarfraz all are being played with by selector Inzamam and can't make use of the duds like Imam. This NEPHEW is such a disgrace he is a lousy fielder who can't stand in silly position, kept falling over.

Agree on one thing with Mamoon, Inzamam is a toxic asset will stain the team which he has proven in the almost 3 year stint as chief selector and as captian. He has favorites[Hafeez, Imam, Azam, Malik, Azhar, Sahfiq] he will protect those favorites at any cost and not allow another batsman outside of his 'group'. He destroyed Asim Kamal's career and now he is destroying many more, with performers in domestics being ignored for last many years.
