World Cup-winning cricket captain and Minister Arjuna Ranatunga today requested Sri Lankan Cricket lovers to stop behaving like Indian spectators at the end of cricket matches.

Addressing the media at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Head Office yesterday he said an incident had been reported as spectators had thrown plastic bottles into the ground during the third one day international cricket match between Sri Lanka and India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Sunday.

“Such incidents should not be repeated. Sri Lankans love cricket and they feel sad when we lose a match. We have made lots of sacrifices for cricket and those sacrifices had been made while loosing lots of things. Every cricketer in out team are mentally depressed,” he said.

Therefore, I request our cricket lovers not to behave like Indian spectators. We have a very good history and culture. Such misbehaviour is not accepted in our culture and history,” Mr. Ranatunga said.

"Several cricketers had been summoned before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) and I informed about it to President Maithripala Sirisena who promised to look into the matter", he said.

The outspoken Minister also said an interim committee has to be appointed to probe frauds and irregularities at Sri Lanka Cricket, alleging that cricket was now being virtually run by gamblers who have put cricket at stake. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Well said, we as human beings are better then that SL_Fan

Indian Fans were quite outraged over the remarks on facebook. Read some hilarious comments today.

Well, when your team is losing day in day out, you need to say something to cheer yourself up :)

Cricketers in 70s-90s were excellent in sledging as well - current bunch need to learn from them how to settle scores. This guy waited 21 years to get back ................

Ranatunga really doesn't like India, does he?

Didn't need to mention them at all.

May be if Lankans stop playing like little girls against Indians then may be, just may be, Lankan fans will not throw bottles and missiles on to the field. :misbah :rp

To be fair, I can understand Lankan fans frustration. They are getting mauled badly every time they stepped on the field against Indians. That CT win looks like a major fluke.

Too bad they beat you when the world was watching and in an important match instead of a meaningless bilateral that even Indian fans themselves don't bother watching.

Not politically correct, but he is right. Among the fan behaviour it has always been SL>BD>PK>IND.

Unfortunately CT win was the only one that actually matters, not many people would care about the results of some random series.

Ayye thats why i always put our world cup wins against pakistan clean whitewash till now at top rather than some bilateral stats.

True, although I don't get the point of holding onto matches that happened years ago, the most recent ICC finals between the two teams is the one that counts the most. I am sure you will agree.

It was a group stage match in a CT. You're making it sound like it was a WC final. At the end of the day, India got to the finals while Sri Lanka didn't even get to the semi-finals.

so you agree India have beating Pakistan in all important matches in WC whereas your team won only meaningless bilateral matches?

We all know what happened on that day :srt

yess but chamions trophy is nothing in front of world cups. There is a reason , icc screwing this cup in future afterall.

India vs Pakistan is never a meaningless bilateral. Records are broken for crowd audiences and TV ratings each and every game, not so much for other bilaterals vs other teams.

Group stage or not. It was in a tournament the world was watching and not a match not a single Indian cricket fan I know watches. Sorry to say this but they beat you where it counts and that will haunt India forever.

Haha, you've got to be kidding me mate? The things Indians say to keep themselevss deluded.. CT is two minnows short of a WC..

Records cannot be meaningful as per your convenience.

Records cannot be meaningful as per your convenience.

You only think I'm using them to my convenience because it goes against your blind patriotism. What have I said wrong? Records for TV ratings and audiences are broken with every bilateral played between India and Pakistan whereas even the biggest of cricket fans don't bother tuning in to watch India play Sri Lanka YET again.

I'm sorry that it hurts, I understand your position, you just can't accept it, it's okay, you don't have to. Keep telling yourself what makes you happy.

What matters is India has beaten Pakistan in every world cup match from 1992 to 2016.You can count the cocacola kitply cool and cool cups in sharjah.

But they already did. Now the only appeal left to be made is that Sri Lankan fans should not make lose talk like Rantunga.:harby:murali

That win did not knock us out of the CT.

Obviously the Lankan fans cared enough to disrupt the game by resorting to bottle chucking.

Of course. That definitely counts but that was never what you were advocating for so why are you changing topics? But sure. And since we are speaking of the past, let me remind you that Pakistan has won more India vs Pakistan encounters and THAT is what really matters.

What also matters is that Pakistan have THRASHED India in every final except in 1985,1998 and 2007,its 12-3 bro

PK (not a single spectator misbehaved during last several years) >>> SL ==India >>> BD

A bit unfair comparison. Pakistan could go from a losing position to winning in no time. So there's always a hope if you are a Pakistani fan.

Not such if you are non Pakistani because we are predictable.

dude, you keep changing the goal post. you said Lankan's CT league match is more important than meaningless bilateral. but Ind vs Pak bilateral is as important as WC league or quarter or semis? what does TV ratings have to do with ODI series being meaningless or not. even this India vs SL ODI series is making millions of money. grounds were filled for this ODI series as well.

PK (not a single spectator misbehaved during last several years) >>> SL ==India >>> BD

one, there was no cricket in Pakistan for the past 8 yrs. the way misbah irritated pak fans, we might have seen a few incidents if played in Pakistan.

two, we all know how pak fans in stadium behaved in 89 series while you had a decent team in those days. match was abandoned because fans hitting the players with stones.

Always respected Ranatunga. Tough competitor and a good sledger - always got under the opposition's skin. Still remember the way he destroyed Warne back in 2005 or so.

Therefore, I request our cricket lovers not to behave like Indian spectators. We have a very good history and culture. Such misbehaviour is not accepted in our culture and history,” Mr. Ranatunga said.

The attack on Australia's team bus only strengthens Ranatunga's claim.
