"I think the Bangladesh team were taking us lightly" : Saud Shakeel on Emerging Teams Asia Cup final

Saud Shakeel at a press conference after winning the Emerging Teams Asia Cup:

"It's a proud moment for me as a captain and for Pakistan as we won the Emerging Cup for the 1st time"

"The boys contributed where required and all the players contributed. The new players showed themselves like Rohail, Haider. Khushdil was coming from Australia and justified his selection with his performances. It was a good tournament and there was a lot to learn from it"

"Matches against India are always important, sometimes in Pakistan people feel that you need to absolutely win the match against India even if you lose the tournament. It was also a SF. We wanted to bat first and set them a target which happened. At one point India were doing well but we made a comeback, Hasnain and Amad Butt bowled at the death. Specially our fielding helped us to comeback, Khushdil and Saif did a run out each. Beating India in a semi-final was quite enjoyable"

"We dominated in the whole tournament, but in the India match even though we made a good score, they batted well so our run outs and death bowling helped us. Against India at one point, we were on the back foot but otherwise we dominated in the other matches"

"This team from India this time weren't so aggressive as they usually are, I think our team was aggressive in this game and I liked the body language of the players, it looked like we were dominating them. We got a couple of warnings too... But that Indian team didn't look like the usual Indian teams"

"I couldn't perform according to the goals I had set for myself, but I did manage to contribute for the team on occasions. I also put myself down the order a bit, we wanted to play Rohail at #3. Where I could contribute, I played and tried to perform"

"In the first match, we made a mistake and fielded 4 over 23 players, maximum was 3. Mohsin was MOTM in the 1st game and I had a slight niggle, so I sat out and gave Mohsin a chance"

"Some of Bangladesh's players had come after playing a series against India. I think the Bangladesh team were taking us lightly, looking at some of the shots they were playing, that's what I felt. They have potential if they continue working further"

"I am also concerned about my performances, my graph has gone downwards a bit. To get out of a bad time, all you can do is to increase your effort and that is what I'll do"

"This season my performances haven't been that good, unfortunately I also think I haven't gotten those chances to show my ability. But I will keep trying hard"

"In the Emerging Cup, if we look at a couple of things: We batted a little slowly in the initial overs, the wickets required that but if we work on our run-rate a bit, we can improve. Besides that, I think we dominated through out the tournament"

"Our team was quite young, even Hasnain is only around 19 and Khushdil has played 1 match for Pakistan. I think that made it easy for me, there weren't many big names so it was easy for us to gel on the field and fight. Our combination was formed early. When you don't have big names, sometimes it's easier for the team to gel together"

"Credit also goes to Ijaz bhai for the way he coached us. In the Indian team also, they have Rahul Dravid who coaches young players. Ijaz bhai is a big name of our country and he's a legend, working with him is enjoyable. We had a 3 day camp for this tournament and did lots of practice, we did practice sessions on every day during the tournament as well. We travelled in the morning and practiced in the evening. Ijaz bhai wanted us to work hard"

"Rohail Nazir contributed in every match at #3, Haider did well, we have Omair Yousuf. Khushdil, Hasnain, etc., they all have the ability to represent Pakistan"

"I was confident that Amad could save 8 runs in the last over, their tailenders were playing with one set batsman. If the batsman got a single, we could do well and that's what happened, we trapped the batsmen"

I don’t know how seriously to take this tournament. Secondly, not sure if these comments are in line the politeness expected of most cricket captains

Should be pasted on the locker rooms of Indian lads that lost, You ve been called meek.

I like Ijaz, he was my favourite in the late 90s after Anwar. He had balls of steel, hopefully he will create more steel.

India surprisingly did not play aggressive against us: Saud Shakeel

KARACHI: The Indian team surprisingly lacked aggression in the semifinals of the Asia Emerging Nations Cup in Bangladesh, observed Saud Shakeel, who led Pakistan to the title, last week.

Pakistan beat India in the semifinals by three runs and then hosts Bangladesh in the final to lift the trophy.

"We know that a match against India is always a tough challenge because they come at your aggressively and play hard but when we played India in the semifinals. I was a bit surprised at their hesitant approach," Shakeel said at a press meet here on Monday.

"We were a bit surprised to see that this Indian team was not that aggressive and they didn't come very hard at us. In fact I and two other players were warned thrice by the umpires to cool it down as we going at them hard," he added.

Shakeel said that winning against India was a big achievement for him.

"We were more aggressive and keen to win than them. That is the impression I got after the match. It was a great close match and we won because of great death overs from Muhammad Hasnain and Ammad Butt."

India lost the match in the final over and Shakeel said the win gave Pakistan them the confidence that they could win the final.

"In contrast the Bangladesh team was strong as they had couple of players who had just played against other countries and India for the senior team and I got the feeling they were a bit overconfident and complacent."

Shakeel said this helped Pakistan beat them soundly adding that Emerging Nations Cup should be held every year at the World and Asian levels.
