"There is an intriguing echo of 1992, in the way Pakistan came through the group stages through the backdoor almost and then played England in the final. I think there will be a different result this time": Mike Atherton

Looking at the England batting, Athers may have a point!

In the end all that matters is who turns up on that day.

England have also done a Pakistan and have peaked at the right time. They were very poor throughout the tournament and suddenly have found their blistering form.

World Cup final at the MCG is a massive occasion. Nerves will be aplenty from both sides. So it's all about who lands the first punch.

Also much of the 1992 England bowling was carrying injuries after being on the road for a long while.

The 2022 boys are looked after better - and Wood should be fit again.

I am not taking away anything from England team or their players, but they have the same feeling in CT 19 semi-final and the green shirts blow them away. :shappy

England historically has never dominated any ICC Event Final

Including the ones which they have won ( barring 2010 win only exception)

Toss & pitch matters a lot.

In recent ICC events pakistan despite being underdog has beaten England every single time

1) 2017 Champions trophy semi final in cardiff (used pitch ) 9 months earlier in bilateral England beat Pakistan 4-0

2) 2019 World cup group stage match.
Trent bridge ( 2 weeks earlier England beat Pakistan 4-0 in bilateral)

3) Nehru Cup semi final Eden Gardens
30 over reduced match via rain won by pakistan

4) Adelaide 74 all out but then World cup final won by pakistan

5) twice thumped Gooch & Gatting in 1987 group stages.

So stronger England teams do not intimidate Pakistan.

Only Pakistan bowling can slow down England batting. But for that Pakistan bowling has to be in top form. Any slight lapse from their best means curtains for Pakistan.

70-30 in England’s favor.

Read some where Babar has said wood is dream bowler for him to hit a six against him. That's pyscholigical advantage wood had over Pakistani batting lineup

Thanks for collecting all these.

It really looks like Pakistan has an edge over England.

If Pakistan can get rid of these opening duo in first 3 overs them they can best England

Pakistan bowling can and will stop England. We believe.

Yep most likely this is the revenge for 92

If Pakistan can win the toss, put England to bat first and restrict them to 140-160. Only then will i give Pakistan a chance to chase this down with Babar/Rizwan giving a good start, taking it deep and for our middle order to take us home.

Batting first against this England batting line up and we are screwed.

Not necessarily chasing 170 won't be easy at the 'G in a final. Our bowling is our stronger suit.

Don’t care who wins

As long as we don’t give opportunity to india to beat us in finals

We will have the advantage with a bigger crowd!!

Would be funny to see England kill the 1992 vibes.

On a serious note, they are certainly the far better side and deserve to win the World Cup.

Holding both ODI and T20 World Cups at the same time would certify the dominance of one of the greatest limited overs sides of all time.

Can't believe I am saying I 100% agree with Mamoon. Lol.

Of course, the heart would love to see Pak win. But the fact is Eng is the best LOI team in this Era.

Hussain said: "When you see England in the first six overs there is a glaring error [from India]. Hales and Buttler are playing the way they are and India are still playing old-fashioned powerplay cricket."

Michael Atherton echoed Hussain's view about England's approach to exploiting the fielding restrictions and suggested it sent a stark warning to Pakistan.

Pak to win it PERIOD. In knockout games you throw out all the records, analysis and numbers. Need to have strong nerves to deal in knockout stages. Pak have played 4 knockout games so far :) Shaheen to be at his best in first 6 overs.

Afraid to say this but I would like to introduce 1-2 overs of spin along with Shaheen and Naseem....

We have a decent chance. Our bowling is the best in the competition and amongst the top 3 in the World and it takes a special innings to beat us.

See that is where i disagree. I think the best chance may be to hustle up to a par score and then 2 early strikes in their run chase, That brings us into the game

You dont need to agree with him 100%. The bit about it being ''funny to see England kill the 1992 vibes'' - that bit is his coping mechanism- after whats happened over the last 2 days

In all probability England will win but sport is not so logical, that is why we love sport :-)

Yh i think this will be the strategy Get to 180 and try and take early wkts

Hopefully the scorecard pressure in a final will do the rest

That's exactly how I see the game.

I think Pakistan should bowl first and keep them under 160 then we will win.

If we bat first we need to get 170.

Some of the nervous pakistani posters have already started crying. Calm down, support your team, pray for them and In sha Allah we will win again.

You can’t be afraid of Wood or Buttler, and I am sure the boys are not as nervous as the posters here.

lol

In Sport you dont DESERVE to win a tournament cup unless you win the final. This is a lack of understand of basics of sport esp in T20 cricket. If England lose to Pakistan, you will still claim they deserved to win.

This isnt a pride of nation awards, nothing is deserved in sport unless you make it happen.

Athers is rightly confident after England's demolition of the IPL Rockstar's but Pakistan bowling is far superiour esp the pacers so wont be so easy for England batters. Lets hope Mike Atherton hasn't been told there are 38 faster, better bowlers than Naseem so taking Pakistan lightly.

Lol. Finals pressure is something else. I reckon chasing team will lose.

There’s no bigger pressure than a game between Pakistan and India and that too in a WC. We saw how our bowlers failed to defend 50 off the last 3 overs.

England bat very deep, if they’re chasing then we have to bowl them all out.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Athers.

I think the whole Pakistan team have come to realisation with what they're up against. Hales and Buttler have made a real statement here and I think Babar and Rizwan in particular will be feeling the pressure. Question is can they handle it this weekend?

England will need an off day on Sunday and Pakistan have to be at their very best if they are to win this tournament. Tough ask.

Pakistan went in as favourites in 92. This isn't the case for this contest.

England thrashing India was the best result for us as they’ll be going into the final expecting to blow us away but it will end badly!

Definitely England have upper hand after semi display. Looking at their form, I now want India in the finals but too late for that. None the less all comes down to Afridi, he get us couple of wickets in opening spell, we have a game on despite England batting deep, else it be England's final to lose.

They're depth is superficial. Past Moeen rest won't chase a high RR in a final.

Could be.
But at least we want to see a hard fought of a nail biter.

I think, as W63L35 posted a great analysis, that if we could get their openers out early (and chances of that happening are not very bad considering our current pace bowling form), this game could go either way.

England are definetly favourites but if pakistan bring the intensity and discipline they did the other night then it ll be a tough game for england

The game is pakistans bowlers vs englands batters

Doesn't matter.
Lets not forget, we've done well to get this far when everyone has failed.
So, whatever happens, on Sunday, well done Pakistan!

Atherton is right.
It will be washed out snd trophy will be shared... so it will be probably be a different result.

On another note, if the weather allows for a full game, England's performance today makes Pakistan favourites in my book.

Todays game has taken all pressure away from Pakistan... just like getting into the semi final did... Pakistan doesn't play well with the favourite tag hanging around their neck and should play with freedom snd flare knowing that they're up against it with little expectations.

India didn’t even have a wrist spinner

That’s where they’re not a complete package

They don’t have an express pacer either

Bhuvi was neutralized by moving forward and getting lbw out of the way even though pant stood up to wickets

Shami looked like a tundler

Only positive is arshdeep but again nothing major on a slow pitch

Pakistani attack is on a different level

What! No chance of play due to rain?

No point waking up at 8am on Sunday , a great shame if this happens.

This will be a rain affected match. Can anyone confirm that we'd get a full game if no overs are bowled on Sunday? and if so, when would we start losing overs?

In either case, Pakistan should definitely bat first. Set up a total, and defend whatever equation it comes down to with DLS.

Forecast doesn't look good as of now.
Thunderstorms on Sunday with high percentage of rain.
Also rain forecast for Monday too.

Praying it blows away and we get a full game on Sunday itself

Ahhh, thanks.

Its a real shame as the Pak bowling attack meant this could be an absolute classic.

Joint winners isnt really winning it so Pak team should sneak the trophy on the plane back to ISB. !

It’s the case of the best batting team vs the best bowling team. Will come down to which team executes their strengths better

Mike is an awesome guy, however this more like "wish" than "think" - wrong choice of words.

Previous games have zero bearing on playoffs. Especially in cricket, weather and conditions can turn strength into weaknesses. Even if Pak bats first and scores reasonably well, 2nd inning can be played in different conditions when ball starts doing tricks.

There is a chance one team might get to field on a wetter surface this sunday. That will also effect the result. It is anybody's guess what the situation might be. One thing is for sure: MCG will not have a flat deck or conducive environment on this sunday to play a slam bang cricket which works against England.

We also have Monday if it rains Sunday

Melbourne is the largest ground in Australia, Huge boundaries, not everyone can clear those boundaries with ease, fitness of the fielders and batsmen running between the wickets will be vital.

I still remember in champions trophy England were hot favorite to win the tournament and everyone here were saying they will score 300+ and if won't be able to chase that. But in the end pakistan bowlers restricted them and I'm hopeful and pray they will repeat it on Sunday and win the game IA

Pakistan batting is not as weak as some might believe. The openers are rock solid, Haris is a devastator and Masood is another Shoaib Malik. Then you have Ifti Chacha with a point to prove, Shadab and Nawaz not even making the list in the top order. Some of those guys can bowl as well. In T20 maybe bowling does make all the difference.

I like Athers but a touch of arrogance there. England slight favourites but we edge them in knockouts and MCG they lost to Ireland.

50/50 game powerplays will decide it.

Pakistan have got this.
Pakistan are gonna bat first or will be put in.
England have already peaked. They can't get better than this.

He is one of the worst predictor lol Everything he predicted has gone wrong in this world T20. This is a good sign.

Kevin Pietersen has claimed Pakistan will be "petrified" of England ahead of a mouthwatering T20 World Cup final clash, following a "ruthless" ten wicket win over India in the semi-finals.

Pakistan booked their place in the final on Wednesday with an impressive victory over New Zealand, before England thrashed India the following day thanks to a masterclass from openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales.

And Pietersen, who was named player of the tournament when England lifted the trophy back in 2010, was full of praise for England's performance. He tweeted: "Ruthless from England!

"An exquisite semi final performance against a fabulous Indian team! Pakistan will be petrified cos this England team is flying."

Pietersen's former teammate Ravi Bopara, who was also part of England's 2010 World Cup winning squad, echoed his thoughts. "England were fantastic," he said on commentary for BBC Test Match Special.

"They are setting the bar and the trend for T20 cricket. They come out and play their shots, not just in international cricket but in domestic cricket too.

"They are trying to get 60-70 off the first six overs, not just 45. It would be worrying for the Pakistan bowlers to see that England performance today but they will back themselves."

And captain Buttler is already looking forward to the final, stating: "The Ireland game certainly does feel a long time ago! But the character we have shown as a group since then, in a huge game against New Zealand, and then tonight to put in our best performance.

"It's important for us to enjoy this and this performance so we will reflect on that and enjoy it, but there is one last dance to go."

Don't think Pakistan is ever petrified of England, especially in big games.

Despite being ruthless the pressure is on England to beat Pakistan if they are good enough on the day.

If Shaheen gets a wicket or two early then I'd even bowl him out for 4 overs upfront. England will look to play him cautiously and it would definitely put the cat amongst the pigeons and considerably reduce the runs they get in the powerplay.

If the pitch has a hint of spin, then the trial by spin starts and Shadab, Nawaz and Iftikhar would spin webs around the English. Otherwise the spinners can play a defensive, run containing role and we can attack through Naseem, Haris and Waseem.

The depth of the bowling attack is legendary.

Atherton is the definition of reason. England marmalised Pakistan at home not very long ago and have consistently been the best white ball team since 2015 World Cup

Once Pakistan will win

You will say

1) It was a one off fluke, England beat us at home and in Pakistani home 2-1, 4-3 in t20 series & they are 2nd GOAT T20 side after India, world cup events can be won via fluke. It
Doesnt certify that one is best if you win World cup.

2) Pitch flattened out when pakistan was batting.

Takecare.

In my viewing experience teams which struggle in their journey to the final end up getting better of the teams who cruise to the final on the big day.

Pak beat NZ by 9 wickets in the 1999 SF wheras SA and Australia went life and death, Australia smashed Pakistan in the final

India and Australia had a tough SF in 2011 wheras Sri Lanka beat England in the SF by ten wickets, India best Sri Lanka in the 2011 final.

Think we pay too much attention to negative voices who have really nothing good to say for Pakistan.

Backing Pakistan if mcg is as bowling friendly as the average pitch has been this wc

It was a sensational victory for England no doubt, but pak v england is ALWAYS a different kettle of fish and also look at pakistans economy this world cup its the best out of everyone so we should back ourselves, on top of that its at the MCG so different scenario................I agree with what bumble said recently, England are the favourites but its written in the heavens pakistan will win :) says it all.

Yes,i agree with peterson.pakistan will find it hard against england.when you have Rashid batting at 11,it is really tough and England B gave tough time to Pakistan in their own backyard during the recently concluded T20 bilateral series..

OH how fitting Imran's statement about above indian comments: ab rulaunga. Main in ko ab or rulaounga.

Yeah we need to go hard upfront with the ball.

A couple of wkts upfront by naseem and shaheen and the cat will be amongst the pigeons
