"I think Virat Kohli is not going to get a hundred and we’re going to knock them off" : Pat Cummins

The Australia paceman says the India captain will not score a century in Australia when India tour Down Under later this year.

In what he termed a “brave, bold prediction,” Australia paceman Pat Cummins said Virat Kohli, the India captain, will not score a century when India go Down Under later this year.

India will tour Australia in November for a series comprising three Twenty20 Internationals and as many one-day internationals, along with four Test matches.

With Australia weakened by the year-long suspensions of Steve Smith and David Warner, the tour represents India’s best chance of securing their first series win in Australia.

Kohli was India’s best batsman when they last toured Australia in 2014, scoring four centuries in all in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. But Cummins believes that won’t be the case later this year.

“My brave, bold prediction – I’d say I think Virat Kohli is not going to get a hundred and we’re going to knock them off over here," he said in Sydney on Tuesday, 11 July, at an event.

In doing so, Cummins channelled Glenn McGrath, who was also a speaker at the event. The former paceman famously called out opposing captains ahead of tours in the 1990s and 200s, and he once again called on the Australian side to put Kohli under fire.

"I want to see Australians put pressure on Kohli and just see how he handles it," said McGrath. “It’s going to be a good, hard, tough series. Kohli has got a bit of an aggressive attitude, but showed last time he was out here he’s not going to take a backward step.

McGrath also advocated targeting opposition captains, saying the great Windies teams of yesteryear did just that. "The Windies of the late 70s, early 80s were an incredible team and they used to target the captain of the opposition team and get on top of him and have a big impact,” he said.

“I tried to bring that in by targeting players when I played. If you get on top of them, the No.1 player and their captain, it makes the job so much easier.

"If they can get on top of Kohli I think it can have a big effect on the game.”

The first Test between India and Australia will be played on 6 December at Adelaide, with Perth, Melbourne and Sydney hosting the subsequent matches.

Big words, but can the Aussies back them up?

Kohli has always done well in Australia. A brave man would get against him getting a 100. Australian attack is very strong. He'll need to be at his best to get big scores .

This is really gonna backfire if Kohli does well.

What would be the pitches-like in Australia this time around?

This is like challenging a lion inside his den.
Kohli has always shown that it's better not to sledge him.

Pat cummins isn't avg cricketer so this has already brought spice in series. Last time during 2016 ausies said they will make kohli doubt on his abilities, kohli averaged less than 15 and scored just 1 half century in 10 innings (in 2017 test & odi series).

Guys like Johnson, Harris, Starc (who were all in pretty good form back then) couldn't stop Kohli from amassing 692 runs in the last series what makes Cummins think he can?

This series is India's best chance to win a series down under.we have our best ever fast bowling unit now with plenty more 140 clicks guys on the bench.

So a bowler who spends most of his time healing from injuries is challenging Kohli? First get fit for the whole series first then open your big mouth.

If Aussie pitches help bowlers little bit more then kohli is done for.

Kohli doesn't have problems against pace and bounce - mostly swing ,so this is optimistic from cummins.

Kohli will score a bucketload of runs. Australia produces some of the flattest pitches on earth, and Kohli is way too good to miss out.

Bold prediction! VK is a batter for all conditions.

Just wrote his own ticket to home ; Kohli will take him and others to the cleaners.

Kohli may or may not score 100s, Cummins and his team mates can expect a lot of chirping abiut sand papers and ICC's keeping a close watch.

Settle down- there’s a fair bit of time to that series

Kohli will smash the Australians.I am just waiting for it.

Kohli will be flop but india will win the series. Ausies will target kohli like they did in 2017 but they wont be able to stop rahul vijay rahane pujara and our own desi :kallis

Even if one truly believes that .... you should not say it .... specially, Before the series !!!!

yeah he should have not said it. I feel hazlewood might trouble kohli more than cummins but still kohli should be able to score runs on those highways.

This statement is really gonna bite Cummins in the back. Kohli is a quality batsman that can bat in all conditions.

It's just a statement of intent . It won't even classify as sledging. Obviously he won't say " they will score tons against us"

You gotta admire the brash Aussie competitive spirit. He steam rolled them the last time and they are still goading him.. lol.. cricket is a funnny game.. we will see who comes out top ..

This is suicidal from Cummins. He didn't talk to his well wishers before saying that.

I actually liked what he said. Given the current situation of Australia, it is brave to say these things.

He said, "My brave, bold prediction ............…............and we are going to knock off them over here".

So, the intent is there as well as the attitude. Lots of fun ahead while going ahead for the series.

Good that Aussies are coming back to their old selves.Indo-Aus games are fiery encounters and I would like to keep it that way.

Australia is dumb to think India is all about Kohli. There is so many match-winner in the Indian team.

Silly prediction. The way Aus pitches are, most batsmen from both sides will fill their boots in this series

Kohli will now probably proceed to score a century every single innings :)) :))

And what has this Pat Cummins done in Intl cricket that he's running his mouth here??

Kohli will score runs in this series as well. The pitches in Australia will be flat as usual, it will be difficult to stop him from scoring even 1 hundred.

They are going o be the same flat pitches we have been getting for years now, even Perth is not that fast anymore.

The wickets in Australia are disappointing. The flattest tracks you will ever seen, and Kohli is too good to miss out on that. India - Australia clash has become a boring affair lately.
I myself looking for England series.

Sir, WACA is done and dusted. No more tests at WACA. India and Aus would be playing the first ever test at the Optus stadium. No more WACA, means no more obvious cracks on the pitch, no more freemantle doctor (the wind)!

Last time Kohli played a series v Australia, he scored 46 runs in 6 innings at an average of 9.2 (or something along the lines), so I can see where Cummis is coming from. Still, a highly bold prediction.

It's more likely that you won't last the series and knock yourself out with another stress fracture Pat.

That’s just the sort of spark needed to fire a player of the caliber and attitude of Kohli. Thanks Pat you saved Kohli precious time and efforts to remain focused for this series.

Virat scoring 100 is like me scoring a single :) This guy plays highly risk free cricket. Always tries to play on the ground. Almost always finds the gap. Only way you get him out is by persisting off side channel. His ODI instincts force him to play cutesy shots through slips.

This is bad. He should be allowed to challenge players.

BUMP ....

How does that taste, Mr. Pat Cummins? :))

Aus winning the test is only concern for Pat here. If Kohli scores ton in every match and Aus wins then Pat won't care about Kohli scoring.

Goal was to win matches by stopping Kohli. If team can win without stopping kohli then who cares.

At the moment, this is probably a very difficult proposition for Australia regardless of whether Kohli Scores or not.

Didn't seem so from the comments he made

He shouldn't have mentioned about not allowing Kohli to score a ton. He made that prediction, not anyone else. The rest of his predictions bear no relevance to his prediction regarding Kohli.

It is egg on face of Cummins. Doesn't matter why he said. He has been proven wrong.
