Pace duo return in South Africa's Bavuma-led ICC Men's Champions Trophy squad

The Proteas have announced their 15-player ICC Men's Champions Trophy squad.

Temba Bavuma will lead South Africa's squad for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, as the Proteas aim to build on their strong recent form.

Runners-up in last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup and finalists in the upcoming World Test Championship, the team is bolstered by the return of pace spearheads Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi.

The tournament marks Anrich Nortje's return to ODI cricket, his first appearance in the 50-over format since September 2023. The star pacer had been sidelined with a stress fracture in his back, forcing him to miss the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and South Africa’s home summer.

Lungi Ngidi also makes his comeback, having been out of international cricket since October 2024 due to a groin injury.

South Africa have largely stuck with the core group that powered them to the semi-finals of the 2023 Men's Cricket World Cup, retaining 10 of the 15 players for the Champions Trophy.

The squad sees fresh additions in Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Wiaan Mulder, all set to make their debut at a 50-over ICC event. Nortje, who missed the 2023 World Cup, is the other notable inclusion.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs, Rassie van der Dussen.

Speaking on the squad announcement, Head coach Rob Walter said: “This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this.

“We’ve managed to maintain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, whilst adding fresh talent.

“Our recent performances at ICC events show that we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. We’re eager to take the next step and go even further in pursuit of the coveted silverware.

How is this a solid squad?

Terrible openers in Bavuma and Zorzi.

Only Klaassen is class in batting and Miller too if he clicks.

They are not winning anything with this batting lineup.

Personally, I would get Stubbs in at 3. And Ngidi in for Shamsi. Markram can be relied on to bowl 5-6 overs of spin.

But this is probably going to be their playing XI:

1. Temba Bavuma (c)
2. Ryan Rickleton
3. Rassie van der Dussen
4. Aiden Markram
5. Heinrich Klaasen (wk)
6. David Miller
7. Marco Jansen
8. Keshav Maharaj
9. Kagiso Rabada
10. Anrich Nortje
11. Tabraiz Shamsi

South Africa pacer ruled out of ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025

In a major blow for South Africa's hopes for the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, key pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out with a back injury.
The extent of the injury was revealed after the pacer underwent scans on Monday.

Nortje is not in line to recover ahead of the 50-over tournament, which the Proteas will begin on 21 February against Afghanistan in Karachi, Pakistan.

The Proteas will announce his replacement in due course.

South Africa doesn't have an awesome squad but all they are banking on is their great team bonding. Otherwise can't see them lifting the trophy with this squad without a great charm of luck.

Coetzee should be the replacement

Missed the 2019 World Cup as well I think due to injury. So 2 World Cups and now CT
Yup, you're right. And they were three different types of injuries. The guy is just unlucky.

'Anrich Nortje will have missed 3 of the last 6 ICC events: 2019 ODI World Cup (thumb injury), 2023 ODI World Cup (hip injury), and now the 2025 Champions Trophy (back injury).'

Coetzee will be the replacement.

A shame about Nortje though. He missed the World Cup too.
Reports: Gerald Coetzee suffers hamstring injury, doubtful for Champions Trophy.

As per reports:

Gerald Coetzee is currently dealing with a minor hamstring issue sustained during the SA20, which led to his omission from the playing XI against the Pretoria Capitals. As a result, his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is now in doubt.

Coetzee had previously taken an extended break from the game due to a groin injury sustained during the Test match against Sri Lanka in Durban.

His return to competitive cricket in the franchise tournament against the Durban Super Giants was a positive sign for the team. However, this new hamstring setback is now diminishing Coetzee's chances of playing in Asia.

Really bad news for South Africa. Maphaka is the only one who makes sense now because of his raw pace.

Corbin Bosch has been named in the 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan later this month

The 30-year-old, who made his One-Day International debut against Pakistan in December, replaces the injured Anrich Nortje. DP World Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has also been added to the squad as a travelling reserve.

Bosch and Maphaka, along with Proteas batter Tony de Zorzi, depart for Karachi on Sunday to join the squad for the remainder of the tri-nation ODI series.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Yasir Arafat has joined the support staff as a consultant for both the tri-nation series and the Champions Trophy.
