ICC Champions Trophy should be a 16-team knockout-only format

Reasons:

  1. It’s not the #1 trophy in ODI cricket anyway, so there’s no need to take the format of an event that ranks #2 in ODI prestige too seriously.
  2. Inclusiveness is important. Teams like West Indies and Sri Lanka are absent from the event, despite many considering them a bigger threat in tournaments than Bangladesh.
  3. Every match being a knockout makes this a unique and exciting event. Anyone can eliminate anyone. More unpredictability. The last time we had this format, the Kiwis won it, which was GREAT for cricket.
So please, ICC, bring back the 2000s-style knockout-only format.

The top 8 teams play their first knockout game against the bottom 8:

  • 1 vs 16
  • 2 vs 15
  • 3 vs 14
  • 4 vs 13
  • 5 vs 12
  • 6 vs 11
  • 7 vs 10
  • 8 vs 9

Unfortunately you are talking sense and trying to expand global game instead of focusing on maximizing tv rights by ensuring Ind vs Pak, Aus vs Eng games with these rigged up comps.

ICC nahi manega

Agreed. However ICC want to guarantee an India-Pakistan match to the broadcasters, and that India would play several matches in a tournament, than run the risk of no India-Pakistan match and India getting knocked out after one game.

But a knockout format is more likely to produce a different winner as opposed to the usual suspects that win a World Cup.

I also liked how the tournament was hosted by nations unlikely to individually stage a World Cup. Hosting rights should rotate between Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand etc.

ONLY can work in T20 not in ODI.

Champion trophy should be in T20 format

:kp

Indias biggest rona was that why the test champion is a one off match.

So if you make this tournament a knockout format, Indian fans will still whine.

Other countries cant really complain, its always indians that have issues

I'll stop watching Cricket the day there's 6-7 hopeless teams in global tournaments just to make up the numbers.

Can’t tolerate them for one match?

The Top 8 would mostly get to the QFs with ease. But 8 vs 9 & 7 vs 10 could be exciting matches in first round.

It's a cruel mismatch, last T20 WC may have proven otherwise but I am still not sold on the idea. Focus should be on bridging the gap first and division system is the way to go for another 10-15 years.

The single knockout would be entertaining but only in T20s. That's where upsets can happen like Pakistan vs USA. In ODIs, it's less likely even though it would be unique to watch.

But the ICC will never want something like this for three reasons.

1) Too many low-profile games that won't generate ratings (i.e. Australia vs USA)
2) Possibility of no India-Pakistan game in the tournament
3) Higher possibility of India getting out early

We all know how the ICC operates with these tournaments and their desires.
