The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed Wasim Khan has been appointed as ICC General Manager – Cricket and will take up his post next month.

Khan who was previously the Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Leicestershire County Cricket Club and Chance to Shine, will take over from Geoff Allardice who spent eight years in the role before being appointed as the ICC CEO.

Allardice said: “I am delighted to welcome Wasim to the ICC. He brings an in-depth knowledge of our sport and its stakeholders and his firsthand experience of the international cricket landscape will be of enormous benefit as we implement the ICC global growth strategy and move forward into a new events cycle.”

Khan added: “I am honoured to be joining the ICC, I can’t wait to get started and work in partnership with our Members to strengthen and grow our sport. I’m particularly excited by the ICC’s commitment to the growth of the women’s game, and I look forward to playing my part in really accelerating that growth over the next decade.”

Wasim Khan was one of the good things that happened to Pakistan cricket of late. I really hoped he stayed on but alas, nevertheless I wish him all the best in his new role. I hope his presence in ICC meetings can escalate the vocal needs of Pakistan cricket.

He’s got bad blood with BCCI

They mocked him at the time when he demanded a clear response from them in regards to Pakistani players visa for the World Cup

Let’s see how this unfolds now

Like you said - we need some drama in ICC - too much of yes sir, yes sir.

This is just a fancy job title and good money. My guess is, all he can do is follow what BCCI wants.

Wasim is a professional. He didn't need to uproot his family and come to Pakistan. But Pakistan did need a professional like him to change the system. He came up with alot of great ideas...ideas with some actual legs, some of which might yet end up materializing years from now. Sadly, however he couldn't change the system because frankly there is no place for professionals in Pakistan or people who dare to work against the forces out to gain from the system. Being the professional that he was and is, he resigned and left gracefully. And now he has found a job that actually values him for the professional that he is.

His replacement---whose understanding of cricket never left the 90s---on the other hand came in, blabbered non-stop about drop-in pitches and 'playing like Australia' while doing absolutely nothing besides building his own PR. Then he played a starring role in producing atrocious pitches that ended up costing us a home series against Australia.

And now, he hanging around like a fool waiting to be sacked (which he will be) instead of resigning and leaving with whatever miniscule iota of pride he has left.

We get what we deserve. And so will Ramiz...

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Pakistan and merit/hardwork/transparency/professionalism are incompatible.

PCB's loss is ICC's gain.

I thought PCB got it wrong removing him as Chairman.

If you replace someone with a better man for the job, then fair enough, but in my opinion that was not the case when Ramiz replaced Wasim.

Brilliant post.

Wasim Khan is good enough for ICC but not good enough for Ramiz Egomaniac Raja's PCB.

Unfortunately Wasim Khan failed miserably when people like Waqar and Misbah along with Majeed got top coaching position. Apart from few good things he was nothing special.

All those appointments came from IK's fancies

afaik , Wasim was adamant to keep Mickey; but then came Misbah

Huh? What has he done that would hurt his pride? If anything, RR has a lot of momentum with him after a the most profitable PSL and the historic tour of Aus.

Unfortunately Wasim Khan failed miserably when people like Waqar and Misbah along with Majeed got top coaching position. Apart from few good things he was nothing special.

Wasim Khan did a huge disservice to his own tenure at PCB by making ridiculous decisions; the biggest one being giving Misbah dual roles and bringing Waqar back into the setup. The team's performance suffered, which was expected, and Wasim/Mani had to pay for it.

Huh? What has he done that would hurt his pride? If anything, RR has a lot of momentum with him after a the most profitable PSL and the historic tour of Aus.

How is he directly responsible for that? There are atleast a hundred people who did more to make that possible than Ramiz.

What did he actually do? What policies did he come up with to improve Pakistan cricket? Because all I have heard for 6 months is: "drop-in pitches! drop-in pitches! drop-in pitches!", "play like Australia!, play like Australia!, play like Australia!"

Why can't y'all just admit that the guy is completely out of his depth in regards to talking/thinking/understanding anything about cricket. During commentary, he sounds like cliche jukebox who never has an original thought. As PCB chairman, he has done absolutely zilch besides making empty statements and big promises....much like a politician.

And its a fairly open secret that he is the one responsible for producing those atrocious pitches against Australia.

Heard his pay package and perks will be significantly higher than what he was getting at the PCB with the added advantage of working in a more structured professional environment.

So much for the naysayers who felt he only got the job in the PCB because of his UK origin

The current PCB regime is still enjoying the fruits of this guy's hard work and planning.

What did he actually do? Well, clearly something that wasn't being done since the past couple of decades where teams like Aus could easily refuse touring Pak without batting an eye. Or are you telling me that it was only during RR's tenure that the security situation in Pak so drastically improved that all of Aus's fears were alleviated?

You are probably choosing to hear what you want to hear. Drop-in pitches was an idea that RR was in favor of. He explored it but decided to pause given the viability, or lack of, of it. What's the big deal?

There is no reason to "admit" that he's out of his depth when so much of good work has been done for Pak cricket. In the past, we've had chairmen like Sethi who have been so scared of showing the mirror to countries like Aus/Eng/NZ, out of fear of "damaging relationships", that we've grown accustomed to getting walked over by these countries. That is the reason why NZ and Eng felt zero hesitation in abandoning their tours last minute - they have never had Pak retaliate or show any kind of spine. Do you recall how many posters here were #hitting their pants and saying "RR is burning all the bridges" with these boards by coming down hard on them with his statements? What was the net result? Aus toured. Eng sent their chief to mend relations. NZ confirmed tour and so did Eng. So, please put your bias aside and look at the facts.

RR also reversed the mess that Mani/WK created by appointing the ultimate failed duo of Misbah and Waqar.

Pitches for the tour were horrendous and RR was fairly criticized for it.

Sorry, but a guy who appointed Misbah as selector and coach did way more harm than good to Pak cricket. If anything, we're coming out of the mess he created.

Ramiz Raja did the right thing to get rid of him. He was responsible for appointing Misbah and he came up up with this dual chief selector/head coach role which was an awful idea. For these reasons alone, he didn't just deserve the sack, but a good kick in the backside on his way out as well.

To credit all that to Ramiz is utterly ludicrous. You are insulting everyone's intelligence by making such an absurd statement. Australia coming here was the result of years of hardwork by the PCB, state institutions and people like Najam Sethi and Wasim Khan who built confidence by conducting multiple successful tours/PSLs. Need I remind you that it was Wasim Khan who built a relationship with the ECB and CA. And it was also Wasim Khan who took a stand on the matter by saying that Pakistan will not be playing any of their home series in UAE going forward. Sethi also deserves alot of credit for organizing those PSL finals at a time when a significant portion of the domestic audience was against the idea while international confidence in touring Pakistan didn't even exist.

As for everything else I have said, I stand by all of it completely. Ramiz is an absolute fool whose understanding of cricket never left the 90s. He loves talking in generalities "play aggressive cricket", "play like Australia", because he doesn't have the mental capability to think deeply about cricket or even try and understand how greatly the game has changed in modern times.

He is called PRaja for a reason. Because as PCB Chairman he has been more interested in building his own personal PR, rather than doing the work and actually getting stuff done. His legacy will be that of blabbering incessantly about a few ideas that he never followed through on, and creating atrocious pitches that led us to an embarrassing and boring series loss against Australia at home.

Not everyone will agree with all of his decisions and appointments.

But overall, he did more good things than bad and as a result PCB enjoyed a fruitful period.

I think the current regime is piggybacking on a lot of the progress that Wasim Khan made during his tenure.

Exactly this.

Appointing an ex-cricketer who holds no relevant coaching qualifications along with no experience is a sackable offence because it's unforgivable and quite frankly criminal.

Oh, so Sethi and WK built that confidence and relations with ECB only to see them refuse to tour without giving a reason? Only for NZ to abandon tour last minute? Solid relationship building I must say!

You can deny it all you want, but all previous PCB chief's have acted like scardy cats in front of other boards. Jumping on hollow tour commitments and afraid to speak out when shown the middle finger. ECB chief flew to Pak after Ramiz's very honest assessment of how Pak had been treated all these years in the past.

Sethi costed PCB millions of $ in the bogus lawsuit he pursued, knowingly FULLY WELL, that PCB had no case. Just like the masters he serves, Sethi only wanted the upcoming PCB admin to pay through their nose because he was being kicked out. Small man in a big office.

PRaja or whatever name you want to address him with. RR would be remembered for finally kicking out the ever non-performing failed duo of Misbah/Waqar, an impressive T20 WC showing and the historic tour and series win against Aus along with a very profitable PSL.

Not everyone harps on about ideas that never even materialized or on which not a single penny was spent; i.e. drop in pitches.

I would have agreed but WK was specifically brought in to build trust with other boards and use his strong connections. The fact that NZ and Eng so easily pulled out from the tours gives us no indication that any meaningful headway was made in this regard.

Again, WK did not help his case by making stupid appointments. Did he not know how well Waqar had fared in his previous stints in the management? Did he not see how Misbah had a poor track record as an ODI captain? Those appointments were ridiculous and set our team back quite a few paces.

If I am not remembering any of the good work that he did, please let me know.

It was because of that relationship that ECB and NZC running came back with their tail between their legs. Rather than the Twitter ramblings of a completely over-the-hill cliche jukebox masquerading as the PCB Chairman. ECB and NZC were fully-aware that a Pakistan tour means cash money and weren't willing to get on PCB's bad-side. Another major factor why England came running back was because they were absolutely obliterated by their own media who scoffed at their explanation for cancelling on the tour. The media response to England's tour cancellation was so strong that it even led to the ouster of the ECB Chairman and the matter reached all the way up to Downing Street. Are you going to attribute that to PRaja too?

LOL PRaja was literally in-charge for 6 months. During that time he tried his best to do as much damage as he possibly could do. Stuff like interfering in selection, interfering in pitch preparation. But even for a clown like him there are limits to the damage he can do in such a short period of time.

If anything, he was lucky to walk-in to a situation where the system was actually on the up-swing. Had he just cashed-in on the hardwork of his predecessors I would have been okay. But no, this clown had to leave his mark on Pakistan cricket because that's just how big of an ego-maniac he is. And boy oh boy did he leave a mark alright. One that will be remembered for years to come whenever people ask why Pakistan lost a home series to an Australian side that couldn't even win a test series in Bangladesh.

Sethi made massive blunders in his tenure such as constantly begging India to play a series as well as the idiotic decision to take that matter to court, when it was obvious that Pakistan would lose the case.

But at the same time he deserves alot of credit for kick-starting the PSL and bringing it to Pakistan. The World XI tour and other T20 series during that time also could not have happened without his hardwork because that was a time when almost everyone was very apprehensive on touring Pakistan.

There was no way Wasim Khan could be held accountable for both ECB and NZC doing what they did and how they did it.

Wasim himself was stunned and very upset at what happened involving NZC and ECB.

Yet the newer coaches and selectors haven't done anything different to Misbah. It was a good decision then and a period of stability in the Pakistan dressing room. Misbah deserves credit for building the team to what it is today

Other than poor pitches and interference in selection, you haven't really mentioned anything else to back up your hyperbole. If that's all it takes for you to term a pcb chairman a failure, you have quite lofty standards on which, tbh, none of the previous chairman have even come close.

Saying that Eng and NZC came back because of relationshipss built by the previous regime is downright silly and completely ignores logic.

Any how, again, the team and Pak cricket have had big wins during the tenure of RR and no one would be forgetting those once he leaves.

We can in the meantime prepare ourselves for Sharif's puppet to take charge again and stand with a begging bowl in front of BCCI for a tour.

Yeah...I really don't have the capacity to get into a discussion with someone who thinks Misbah did anything even remotely resembling building a team.

Wasim Khan did the same. He capitalized on the groundwork laid by Sethi and Shahryar Khan as far as bringing international cricket back to Pakistan was concerned.

The only reason Wasim was able to host Test cricket in Pakistan and convince teams to tour was because of the incremental steps taken by the previous regime from 2015 to 2017.

Convincing teams to play in Pakistan in 2019-20 was a lot easier than convincing teams to tour in 2015-16, when the scars of the Sri Lankan attack were still relatively fresh and more importantly, PCB had no credibility and no successful tours to build on.

Sethi and Shahryar build that trust, took steps to make Pakistan a hosting nation again and those successful tours by Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, West Indies, World XI and also the PSL matches enabled Wasim Khan to carry forward the momentum and take it up a notch.

Wasim had very strong PR and tried to take credit for bringing cricket back to Pakistan, but the reality is very different. He found himself at the right place at the right time as far as the timeline of bringing cricket back to Pakistan was concerned.

Yeah...I really don't have the capacity to get into a discussion with someone who thinks Misbah did anything even remotely resembling building a team.

no worries, then please don't bash without any arguments :19:

First it was just poor pitches, Then you accepted he interfered in selection too. How much longer before you accept the remaining failures of PRaja too?

And no I have mentioned quite a lot of stuff. You just choose to ignore it because you have trouble looking past your love for PRaja. Oh and btw, you really haven't mentioned anything concrete that proves that Ramiz's tenure was the roaring success you make it out to be.

How does it completely ignore logic lol? Wasim Khan visited these countries and held discussion with their board officials back when Ramiz was spitballing what new cliches he can throw out during commentary. He visited Australia in 2019 and held comprehensive meetings with CEO and Chairman of CA, aswell as the President of the Players' Association Shane Watson. In the case of the ECB there were already well aware of him owing to his time running the Leicestershire County Cricket Club. And he further built the relationship by finalizing Pakistan's tour to England in 2020 at a time when barely any cricket was going on around the world. Something for which the ECB owe us big-time.

Needless to say, when England cancelled their tour on a flimsy excuse that no one bought, it was the English press that pointed out how Pakistan toured England during the height of the global pandemic when ECB were in a very tough spot.

LOL are you seriously going to attribute the performance of our team to PRaja too? That is the most ludicrous thing I have heard from you till now. If we take your metric, the tenure of Ijaz Butt was a highly successful one because we won a T20 World Cup when he was chairman. Yet again you're insulting everyone's intelligence by making such an absurd statement.

Yeah...I really don't have the capacity to get into a discussion with someone who thinks Misbah did anything even remotely resembling building a team.

Who brought in Haris Rauf, Abdullah Shafique, Naseem Shah, Khushdil Shah? Who persisted with Rizwan as opener when everyone thought he didn’t have what it took to open the batting? Who persisted with Asif Ali when everyone was calling him a hack and Misbah’s favorite?

Fact: Pakistan have never lost a home series when Misbah was captain or coach.

Nobody is making Misbah out to be as some sort of a revolutionary that changed Pakistan cricket. But its utterly ignorant to say he did nothing at all.

It will be interesting to see how Wasim deals with his former employers and their management team and reps.

I doubt he's one to hold grudges, but it won't be a smooth ride for PCB.

Ehsan Mani in a recent interview:

“The entire media refused to understand why people like Wasim Khan were compensated handsomely. If you look at how much he is now earning with ICC, it is almost double to what PCB were offering him at that time. Coaches were compensated according to what was agreed upon"

Playing Rizwan as an opener has turned out to be the he biggest disservice any coach could have done to Pakistan cricket. This accumulator of 120-130 strike rate is unmovable now

Rizwan is the best thing that could have happened for Pakistan

I don't know what alternate reality you are living in, but in the real world Rizwan is one of the best T20 openers in the world who had arguably the greatest year that a batter has ever had in T20 cricket. And someone whose meteoric rise as a top order batter in this format has few comparisons in the history of T20 cricket.

Right, and we are world beaters all of a sudden?

You've said this multiple times but not provided an alternative.

Babar and Rizwan have found massive success for Pakistan's opening stability.

I don't understand why repeat points without offering anything to discuss/engage in.

Babar and Rizwan are ranked 1 and 3 respectively in the T20i rankings.

Right, and we are world beaters all of a sudden?

Yep, we are certainly a lot better than we were when Sarfaraz or Sharjeel or Shahzad or Akmal were in the team.

Thank you Rizwan for making the fans fall in love with your humility, hard work and team-first attitude

Congrats to Wasim Khan, we got out of the PCB and Pakistan Cricket at the perfect time. In fact he got an even bigger position as the General Manager at the ICC at twice-thrice the salary he was getting at the PCB, he even spearheaded launching a sports management program at LUMS.
