ICC T20 World Cup (2026): Australia announces squad [Update@ Post63]

Australia will be playing Super 8 in India. Getting through the group stage won't be an issue regardless of where they play
I’m not so sure that they will just wiz past Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe

Mitch Marsh is out of the World Cup. Big setback for Australia.

Steve Smith flying in as replacement

So much for being favorites, half their team is decimated now. The team that played against Pakistan looking better than this one lol

Aussie skipper out of Cup opener, superstar Sri Lanka bound

Travis Head set to captain Australia in their 2026 T20 World Cup opener against Ireland

Mitch Marsh is out of Australia's T20 World Cup opener after suffering a painful blow to the groin area, with Steve Smith on his way to Sri Lanka as cover for the men's T20 captain.

Travis Head will lead the side against Ireland in Marsh's absence, as he did in the first T20 in Pakistan last month, with his fellow opener requiring a period of rest and rehabilitation.

It leaves Marsh in doubt for the team's second match on the tournament against Zimbabwe in just two days' time, with Australia down to just 12 fit players for tonight's clash with Ireland in Colombo (beginning at 8.30pm AEDT).

Australia XI: Josh Inglis (wk), Travis Head (c), Cameron Green, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Matthew Kuhnema

Ireland XI: Paul Stirling (c), Ross Adair, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Curtis Campher, Ben Calitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Matthew Humphreys

Australia named a quartet of World Cup debutants as stand-in skipper Head opted to bat in the Group B match at R. Premadasa Stadium.

Marsh's absence means Matthew Renshaw comes into the batting line-up for his maiden World Cup appearance having only made his T20 international bow two weeks ago against Pakistan.

Australia make call on Hazlewood replacement at T20 World Cup

Australia have finally made a call on Josh Hazlewood's replacement at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup with news that veteran batter Steve Smith has been parachuted into their 15-player squad with immediate effect.

Hazlewood was ruled out of the tournament at the start of the month, but the Aussies had delayed naming any replacement for the experienced right-armer until the eve of their penultimate group clash against Sri Lanka in Kandy.

The ICC Event Technical Committee have approved Smith's inclusion for Hazlewood in Australia's 15-player squad for the remainder of the tournament, meaning the veteran right-hander could feature as early against Sri Lanka on Monday.

“ICC regulations stipulate any squad change must be submitted and activated at least one day prior to a match," Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said.

“With Steve here, along with some uncertainty around Mitch and Marcus Stoinis, it made sense he (Smith) is activated and available for selection in time for the match, if required.”

Smith hasn't played a T20I for Australia in almost two years, with his most recent appearance in the shortest format coming against New Zealand in Auckland in February 2024.

But the 36-year-old looked in great touch during Australia's recent domestic Big Bash tournament and is set to feature in matches against Sri Lanka and Oman during the group stage.

Australia suffered a shock loss to Zimbabwe on Friday and will likely need to win both their remaining matches during the group stage to progress to the Super Eights phase.

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

This is the worst performance by Aus in any tournament. Their squad was pretty decent but they got undone by SRL conditions and a rampant ZIM team. They were the second favorite team to win before the tournament.

If you look at T20 compared to ODIs, spinners wristies, mystery spinners dominate. If they get any kind of purchase Australia looks the worst team among SENA teams. The same team would have thrashed most of these teams on flat decks.
