New Zealand defied injury and illness concerns to script an impressive opening victory over Afghanistan in the so-called group of death, which also features South Africa, significantly boosting their chances of progressing to the next round. Their next challenge, however, comes against an unfamiliar opponent, with only six players in New Zealand’s 15-member squad having previously faced the UAE in international cricket.

The Black Caps will lean on insights from Mark Chapman, who encountered the UAE frequently during his time representing Hong Kong, and Lockie Ferguson, who is well acquainted with several UAE players after captaining the Desert Vipers in the ILT20. Despite their pedigree, New Zealand will be wary of underestimating the UAE—especially after suffering a shock defeat in Dubai in 2023 with a squad that included Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, and Chapman.

For the UAE, this fixture presents an opportunity to reassert themselves on the global stage after missing out on qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Although they have won just one of their six matches in T20 World Cup history, regular participation in the ILT20 has ensured their players remain sharp and competitive in the format.

Captain Muhammad Waseem is renowned for his power-hitting, while Alishan Sharafu offers similar explosiveness and flexibility in the batting order. With the ball, left-arm spinner Haider Ali can apply early pressure through his accuracy in the powerplay, and pacer Junaid Siddique is known for his pinpoint yorkers at the death.

The UAE recently stunned Bangladesh in a bilateral T20I series and pushed Pakistan hard during the Asia Cup, and they will be eager to claim more high-profile scalps in international cricket.

NZ and SA are the best prepared sides. NZ played 5 tough matches against India right before world T20. SA on the other hand played both ODI/T20 in India and also come here after a red hot tournament like SA20. NZ are battle hardened. They are going to steamroll UAE.

UAE defeated them back in 2023. They can do it again and do it at the bigger stage.

Kiwis 90-10 though

United Arab Emirates have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:

United Arab Emirates
(Playing XI): Aryansh Sharma(w), Muhammad Waseem(c), Alishan Sharafu, Mayank Kumar, Sohaib Khan, Harshit Kaushik, Muhammad Arfan, Dhruv Parashar, Haider Ali, Junaid Siddique, Muhammad Rohid Khan

New Zealand (Playing XI): Tim Seifert(w), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner(c), James Neesham, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy

Finn Allen is struggling with a shoulder injury and still playing. Weird decision eventhough he has been cleared for batting but can't throw properly. If there was ever a game to rest him, this was the one

Muhammad Waseem is one of the best Associate players in the world. Fantastic rate of consistency and almost always seems to do it at a high strike-rate.

Complete destruction from Allen and Seifert

Allen is supposed to be struggling with a minor shoulder injury and he's 44 off 25

Feel for the UAE fielders. Every ball they are diving to try and save a boundary. Barring Haider Ali this has to be the most makhan, one-dimensional bowling attack in the tournament.

Clinical. Efficient. Brutal. NZ have looked switched on from ball 1 of the tournament.

No other team has looked anywhere near as good in all departments

Every ball was played with the intent to score runs or hit boundaries. Would be really interested to know how many dot balls these two played in this innings because I can't imagine there were too many
