Salam brothers and sisters.

I am planning to visit the Big Apple and wanted some idea and tips on halal eating and shopping.

- Defo going to visit Halal Guys and Haandi. Any other reasonably priced or cheap eats?? I will try these one dollar oysters!

- Bargains coming from the UK, any bargains we can get in the USA than UK. I will go to Woodbury for stuff like Levis Jeans, Ralph Lauren and Tommy clothing. If there is some money left then an Ipad.

why would you wanna go to Haandi?

It is Pakistani food of the highest quality and beyond comparison but it isnt really a tourist thing. Its run of the mill place in terms of decor and I used to go there when I was very homesick and wanted beef nehari.

i'll do a write up when im home

Don't drive, take public transport if you want to maintain your sanity.

You really don't need any ideas everything is just a subway ride away so you just have to move around. Only thing I would suggest is getting a subway map and a monthly unlimited metro card. Been living here for 18 years and still find new and exciting things everyday, its like a jungle you just have to explore and find things you like.

So you're traveling from UK to NYC to eat Pakistani food in Indian restaurants?!

Why not instead go to the the Met museum, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, a broadway show etc.?

natural history museum; its awesome

the pizza in its basement eatery is quite nice as well

If you into that kind of thing the USS Intrepid is worth a visit as well

Dont bother with a new york pass though, everyone has them, makes no difference on the lines

Salam once again. Thanks for all posters, especially the ones who have given positive contributions.

I hope more positive contributions to come. May Allah bless you for your efforts

Dera is a decent restaurant if you're looking for Pakistani food

Some places to check out:

Times Square
High Line
Central Park
Empire State Building
Grand Central Terminal

Have Halal Guys..... I've heard its awesome. They opened a branch in Toronto this past summer and frankly speaking I did not like it at all, but my friends tell me that the original branch in NYC blows every other out of the water so it is a definite place to hit up. I doubt you get anything like it in UK.

Don't go to Haandi or any restaurant around 28 and Lex. Haandi is a roach-infested dump with food that is slightly above average. Don't go to any traditional restaurants that you may have heard of (Haandi, Kabab King, etc.). NYC has much better to offer.

For desi-style burgers or lamp chops, try BK Jani (highly recommend this) in Brooklyn. You won't be disappointed. For steaks, Affy's is okay. For kebabs, try Afghan Kebab & Grill in Jackson Heights. For fine dining, go to Junoon in the city (Michelin-starred). For Indo-Chinese, try Fatima's Halal Kitchen in Astoria. For pizza, try Joe's Pizza by 14 and Union Sq or Times Square.

For sightseeing, have a day for Central Park and major museums - go to Central Park (from Columbus Circle), then go to American Museum of Natural History on west side of the park and the MET on the east side of the park. These are world-class museums that any tourist should pay a visit.

High Line is okay. New York Botanical Garden is nice. Staten Island Ferry is free during the weekends, and it passes by the Statue of Liberty. Times Square and China Town are the standard tourist traps. Brooklyn Bridge is nice. Washington Square Park by NYU and Bryant Park by Times Square are nice too.

It is one time thing, first time it'll taste good because it is cheap and somewhat taste good. I have had one in Toronto too, didn't find any significant difference.

Every restaurant has mini reptiles running around, in NYC you just can get around it. In NYC The only restaurant that doesn't have this problem is a closed restaurant.

Yes, you can. That's why I suggested alternatives. Restaurants like Haandi represent a health hazard. Other than taxi drivers, no Pakistanis living in NYC go to Haandi.

Wow didnt realise this bro. I saw Haandi on Andrew Zimmerman's show , although he eats anything TBH :D

This. +1 for BK Jani. Also, not sure if people know but Creekstone farms beef is apparently halal and a lot of high-end restaurants like Marc Forgione and others serve Creekstone.

Read more on it here:

Affy's in Canada is much better compare to NY one

Affy's is fazul.... but for people who eat halal only it is a good option since not many real steak places sell halal steaks.

Bro once you try 53rd and 6th there is no going back... you will forget about desi food. That hot sauce is made from hell pepper, it is unforgiving. If you go to Jackson Heights try Kababish gola kebab if you can handle the spice and Al Naimat for Samosa and Kashmiri Chai.

This haandi has to be one of the worst places in the city. It's 2 mins from my university.

Disgraceful service and under/overcooked food.

what happened?

around 2013 it was really good taste wise. dunno about hygeine lol

or maybe it was because i used to have Pakistani food once in 4-5 months so anything tasted amazing

Bhai one day I ordered naan and they couldn't make it for some reason. Instead of offering me chapati and telling me about their problem, they gave me rakhe hue naan.

Ask them for doodpatti and they give you a cup of boiled milk with half spoon chai ki patti.

Yeh tou sirf do kisse hain. A new problem pops up everytime I go there.

The fall down of a desi eatery reminds me of the demise of one my personal favourites. Mirch Maasala in Tooting which was so good that there used to be a queue to get in.

Now the place looks shabby, half full, waiters are rude and the food doesnt taste good anymore.

On another note Sakoonis in Wembley is the most over hyped placed I have been to.

Exact same thing happened to me. They gave us yesterday's naans because their gas wasn't working. He informed us this after we had ordered our meal.

lolol did you go after 6/7pm? If yes, then most likely the same guy served us. The lady who manages everything during the day is nice.
