Mushtaq Ahmed speaking during a TV show:

“Saeed Anwar often says, "If you have 346 wickets in international cricket, 300 of them are wrong." When I asked how, he said, "You and Moin have taken these wickets by making incorrect appeals. Moin Khan played a big role in my wickets. He would tell me that this umpire is a bit weak, make two or three appeals to him, and he'll give it out."

“We wouldn't even look to see if it was actually out or not and we would start celebrating. Moin Khan would tell me, "Mushtaq, well bowled, excellent bowling," and if DRS and third umpire existed at that time, both Moin Khan and I would have been in jail.”

Why is that any different today?

Teams know that appealing vociferously can get you an on-field umpire decision in your favor, then it will take a lot to overturn it unless it's an absolute howler.

The difference is DRS?

Only LBW has that benefit and that is not by a lot. People would not grudge it.
Caught dismissals have no benefits of on field call.

DRS has been very beneficial and levelled the playing field.

It has removed both howlers and deceptive practices. But, it is not perfect obviously.

Bangladesh Head Coach Chandika Hathurusingha Press Conference at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium ahead of 1st Test against Pakistan:

"I know Mushi [Mushtaq Ahmed] since 1988. That's how long I've known him. He has actually come in and fitted into the coaching group really well. He has a lot of experience working with England for a long time and in Pakistan as well. He brings a lot of internal knowledge, local knowledge, as well as experience from other parts of the world. He is fitting in well, not only with bowling but also helping us in terms of making decisions."
