"If I am going as an opener and playing till end of innings then I must surely be fit": Kamran Akmal

Wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Akmal is once again among the runs in the National T20 and his record breaking run will surely force the national selectors to stand up and take notice.

However, the 35-year-old has played down talks of a recall, saying he is only focusing on his own game at the moment rather than aspiring for anything else.

Kamran’s unbeaten 150 for Lahore Whites against Islamabad broke several records as he became the first Pakistani batsman to reach that landmark in T20s, surpassing Mukhtar Ahmed’s 126 for Sialkot Stallions against Karachi Whites in 2015 as the highest-ever score by a Pakistani.

The 209-run opening stand he shared with former Pakistan captain Salman Butt was also the highest in the shortest format of the game, with Kamran doing the bulk of the damage with his 150. The duo broke the previous record of 207 set by Kent batsmen Joe Denly and Daniel Bell-Drummond in the Natwest T20 Blast earlier this year.

The 150, which came off just 71 balls, was no flash in the pan though. Kamran also became the first Pakistani to register five consecutive scores of 50 or more in the shortest format; only the third in the world after India’s Virender Sehwag and Zimbabwe’s Hamilton Masakadza.

Despite being in the form of his life, Kamran knows all he can do is keep his head down and work towards forcing the selectors’ hands.

“I have been doing what a player needs to do — score runs — and that too in all formats of the game. I have been performing in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and now am doing so in T20 cricket as well,” Kamran told The Express Tribune. “I am just concentrating on my game, which I’m supposed to do. The rest is up to the selectors and the board.”

However, he did admit he dreams of wearing the hallowed green again. “Every player who performs in domestic competition hopes to make it into the national team,” he said. “My job is to stay fit and perform to the best of my ability. If I am making records and performing consistently then that is all I can do from my end. Hopefully, the selectors will take notice. They are watching a lot of players and I hope my hard work can pay dividend.”

Kamran revealed he isn’t planning on resting on his laurels. “For me, fitness is key to how a player performs. I was playing with an injured foot but still managed to score big,” he said. “If I am going out there as an opener and playing till the end of the innings then I must surely be fit.”

The opening statement is highly contradictory to what the guy has done his entire career. He has always been unfit and more often than not been below par as a keeper or as a batsman. This guy had the skills, shots to be a 40+ average batsman in both ODIs and Tests.

You are not going anywhere only place left is leagues where you play and make some money stop dreaming about making the come back in pak team

Can he honestly say I am at the ideal weight for my midgety height...he and his brother are two of the most shameless players who somehow ended up representing Pakistan and act like despite all their failures galore...we should be begging them to give us the pleasure of watching them fail one more time!

He singlehandedly lost Pak more games with his keeping than any other player in our history and that was his bread and butter dept i.e. he was a specialist keeper first and then a decent batsman. He has been over weight for last 10-12 years (Rashid Latif pointed it out on many ocassions) and because of that his keeping has suffered immensly yet he thinks fitness is just scoring runs (every 6-7 matches) and dropping catches, who cares if we win or lose!

Kamran Akmal was given way too many chances in tests and ODIs but he failed way more times than he performed. Every time he gets lucky in Domestics he starts calling out the Selectors and the PCB. Next time he does that ban him from Domestic Cricket for 6 months.

Regarding fitness of Kami - no change really as he has never been the fittest and never will be.

I think his lack of fitness and agility was one of the reasons why he was so poor behind the stumps.

His batting has been nowhere intnl standard over the last decade

Just because he can hammer domestic bowlers doesnt mean hes good enough or fit

Weve all seen how shoddy hes been in the field and behind the stumps Slow, unathletic, cant catch The list goes on

He should be nowwhere the intnl team

The guy took his place in the team for granted and is now paying the price for it big time. Should have had a much longer International Career than he actually did.

Play him in place of Hafeez as a no.3-4 batsman. Atleast he won't be 40. However again catches and his fielding are a big issue I dunno how much he can work on it.

Maybe he has one great knock left in him in 2019 like Hafeez had vs India.

Why him and not mukhar or sohail akhtar or sohaib maqsood? Heck even Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor have got centuries this tournament. All those players and youner, fitter and wont be complete liabilities in the field.

He'll be harping on until age 38-39, unfortunately this is Misbah's fault for setting such an example. In no other country would a 35 year old be acting so entitled to a place in the national squad.

I am saying this guy is the top scorer and has been consistent in all domestic tournaments... Why aren't all of these names topping the list instead of Kamran again and again...

He needs to do more if he wants another return to the team. It's time we start having higher standards for the national team. One season of good performance should not be enough, especilly for someone like Kamran.

I wonder why all the garbage cricketers of Pak talk so much to prove themselves worthy to be the part of national team rather than working on their own fault.

This is the issue. When he was a regular in the team Kamran never performed liked this in international or domestic. Never worked on his batting to this extent. Now he's older, he has, but it's arguably too late, and he played hundreds of matches under performing in most of them.

Wish he did this in the past when age was on his side, and he hadn't played so much international cricket. I think he possibly could do well in the form he's in, but he isn't exactly a great choice building for the future.

I think Kamran is probably fit enough to be a batsman. Wasn't fit enough to be a keeper, and isn't fit enough to be a great fielder (and on top of that he's just not a great fielder, never really worked on the skill).

I wouldn't have him in the team as we have other, younger players waiting in the wings, Haris especially hasn't even returned to ODIs yet, and Imam performed in his chances as opener from the go (and Kamran didn't against WI), unfair to drop Imam for Kamran. Only place I can see him replacing his Hafeez's, but you'd want Haris instead of Kamran as a replacement.

Having said that I don't mind him returning to the team if it's on performances. Better late than never. What irritated me to no end is when he kept getting recalled after being dropped (or simply persisted with), despite poor and deteriorating batting and keeping. He did nothing to prove he improved in any way after being dropped, but was selected again after a short time out. Yet on the other hand we expected guys like Sarfraz to perform from the get go, knowing it's often hard for a wicketkeeper to perform with both bat and ball new to the team. Our attitude towards him as a keeper led not only to better wicketkeepers missing out but also Kamran to not bother to improve.

If that is his idea of fitness, it pretty much sums up ignorance.

Thank god youre not our selector. So you should pick someone if they are the top performer in domestic regardless of other factors? So it doesnt matter than the player is close to 40, unfit, has terrible technique and most importantly has already been given many many chances of a comeback and hundredrs of international matches and always failed? He performs in domestic again and should immediately be selected over others. Funny i dont see you pushing for Fawad or Sadaf.

Try and hide your bias at least.

Babar Azam needs to block this guy on family chat groups and should get a court summon to restrict him getting any closer than 100 miles to him. Such idiotic ideas can't be allowed to spread.

That's not how fitness tests work Kami.

Inzamam scored 329 in a baking hot Lahore, doesn't mean he's anyone's idea of a fit professional. And anyway, that era of cricketer that could get away with poor fitness if they performed is long gone.

When Kamran returned in the Caribbean he looked lethargic and slow as a fielder. Its 2017 not 2005, Kamran should stick to domestic cricket and leagues.

Kamran Akmal becomes first Asian player to complete 800 FC catches

KARACHI: Kamran Akmal on Monday added another feather to his cap by completing 800 catches in the first-class cricket.

Wicketkeeper Akmal, 35, is unpopular with cricket fans due to the perception of his wicket-keeping skills but he continues to defy this opinion with his performances at the domestic season.

He reached the milestone of 800 FC catches during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy match at SBP ground, where he was playing super 8 round’s match for WAPDA against KRL.

He claimed 7 catches in the match, 5 in first and 2 in second innings of the game.

Kamran is not only the first Pakistani but also the first Asian player to reach this milestone and only the second non-England player after Rod Marsh to achieve the feat of 800 first-class catches.

Out of the 33 players to reach 800 FC catches, 31 are from England.

With a total 865 dismissals behind the wicket, Kamran is also Pakistan’s most successful wicketkeeper in First Class cricket.

He was also the leading scorer in recently concluded National T20 tournament.

Why hasn't a single journalist taken him up on his "just give me 3 chances as an opener " pledge?

Everyone is so obsessed with access rather than the story.
