Misbah-ul-Haq:

"If you bash a player who is putting in so much effort for Pakistan then this is bound to happen" on Azhar leaving captaincy of ODI team

"If I had listened to the criticism from the media then I would have left cricket 6-7 years ago"

"My mentor is my son who advises me all the time"

"If you do well people will praise you, if you dont do well then the same people will criticise you"

"There is nothing wrong with the Test team as the same team has performed very well in the past 6-7 years"

"The new guys will need to adjust to international cricket very soon if we wish to survive and be counted as a top team of the world"

"I would blame everyone for this including media, as lot of unnecessary pressure was built upon him"

"He (Azhar) has a decent average of 38 in ODIs and we just seem to be targeting his weaknesses and not talking about his strengths"

"Why would anyone put themselves under such pressure?"

"Must be very difficult for any player to be in this situation" on Azhar Ali being removed as captain and then dropped from ODI side.

"I am definitely concerned about our fast-bowling as we have suffered due to that in New Zealand and Australia tours"

"Our fast bowlers should have a killer instinct which we are lacking"

"We have done well in UAE conditions but struggle in other conditions"

"Amir and Wahab are lacking consistency in terms of wicket taking ability"

"Shadab has a great googly and has an excellent temperament"

"We are still not seeing any effective bowlers in the off-spinner category"

"Saeed Ajmal is obviously hurt on being ignored by the PCB but I am sure those who took the decision know what the reasons are for this"

"Playing against a side like the West Indies is always difficult as they have little pressure and have nothing to lose"

"When trying to decide about my retirement, I will need to consider what the Board wants of me and what is best for the team"

"The disrespectful manner in which the senior players and captains are discussed in the media makes you wonder if you have done something wrong"

"My four below par Test matches in NZ & Aus seem to weigh more than my performances in the last 7 years, this seems to be the way of thinking of some"

"You feel anger for people who cannot say one positive thing about you and consistently spread negativity about you"

"We need to make sure we have a set rule to deal with people who indulge in corruption"

KARACHI: Pakistan Test cricket captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Saturday spoke out against the decision to exclude Azhar Ali from the One Day International squad and stated that he was not in favour of showing leniency to fixers.

Misbah-ul-Haq did not mince words when it came to stating his views about former ODI captain Azhar Ali's exclusion from the squad. Misbah stated that Azhar Ali must be disappointed at the decision and one should make sure that cricketers are not disheartened.

"Team selection should not be done based on media reports," said the Test skipper. "When a cricketer performs, that is not highlighted as much as when he fails to deliver," he added.

Praising Mohammad Asghar and Shadab Khan, Misbah said that he was concerned about the performance of the fast bowlers in recent times.

"Our bowlers do not fare well when we tour abroad," he said.

He said that Saeed Ajmal should not be neglected at every level and stated that Pakistan was in dire need of off-spinners. Misbah also spoke about the West Indian team and said that the Windies had nothing to lose in the series against Pakistan.

"West Indian batting is weak, the whole team is not," he said. "They have century-makers till the number 7 spot in their batting line-up," he added.

Misbah also said that in the series against Pakistan, Windies would be under less pressure. He also shed light on his retirement plans, stating that he alone would take the decision.

Misbah bhai might think its him against the world at the moment, but its alright to criticize his wrong decisions, and he made one in getting Azhar Ali as ODI captain... I as a fan tried to support for a long time as a captain, but its clear Sarfraz has shown much better aptitute and application in captaining a side.. there's a midas touch in his captaincy which is winning Pakistan games in the t20 circuit specially.. which was not there when Afridi was captain

Karachi: Pakistan's most successful Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, has lamented the absence of bilateral cricket ties with India.

In an interview today, Misbah said he was against restrictions of any sort in sports.

"These restrictions are because of politics and political issues between Pakistan and India. But I don't think this should be the case as cricketers and fans are deprived of good contests," he said.

Misbah, 42, who has never led Pakistan in a Test series against India despite being captain since late 2010, didn't believe that the Indian team didn't want to play against Pakistan.

"They, like us, can't do anything because there are other issues involved here. I am sure when things improve politically there will be cricket between Pakistan and India," he added.

He lamented that young players from both countries were not getting the opportunity to get a feel of Indo-Pak cricket matches, which help them develop as players.

"It is good that we now have our own league (like IPL) and it has been a major success in just two years. I am sure next year there will be more widespread interest in the Pakistan Super League from the people, sponsors and stakeholders."

Misbah, when asked to compare the IPL with PSL, said they were different leagues and that the Indian market for cricket was very different from Pakistan.

"But I feel that since the IPL has now been there since 2007 people's interest in it has dropped. I see more interest in our new league. There is always a saturation point for everything," he said.

Don't know about 6/7 years ago, but you definitely should have left a couple of years ago

and now people will blindly go after him for his statement, and i doubt anyone understood what he was trying to say.

The way Azhar Ali has been kicked out of the ODI team is what he is talking about
A guy performing and has the stats to back himself gets ousted as media doesn't like his style of cricket.

It was indeed hard on Azhar, first no PSL game and now this.

Misbah is spot on here, and hope Azhar doesn't feel too downhearted here.

Point being, Azhar being ousted from the team as a batsmen was just plain wrong, there was no justification.

MISBAH is out to defend his buddies...pathetic.

Hmm so if defending team mates is pathetic?

So you would rather have him become yousuf and Akhtar and dig into the players soul for every little reason?

defending fo wrong is pathtic..how can he defend azhar in odi.....shows that how much loyal he is to his friends..

its not about people liking and dislikings..misbah was wrong by giving recomendation to make him caaptain..he should come and accept his mistake rather than defending him...

Ironic that he's criticising Azhar's sacking after more than a year of poor captaincy and awful results when he himself was the one who chose to throw Azhar into the deep end by bizarrely asking for him to be thrust into the captain's role, despite Azhar having played no ODIs for over two years under his own captaincy.

He's such a brainless person have some common sense your time is over retire with grace instead of lingering on for making money but losing all the goodwill.

Cause misbah you are thick skinned.
Any person with iota of self respect could have resigned long time back.
Your captaincy was worse than MoYo's in Australia.

You are on losing streak. You lost against WI in UAE!

Odi team started performing after you were sacked.

Your performance as a batsman is an embarrassment.
You deserve Afridi's fate and hopefully you get that.

Did he put a gun to Sharyar Khan's head? PCB did not have to listen to him. Both are in the wrong here.

Should not be in the team anymore. Misbah's time is up and he needs to realize ODI Cricket has changed alot

Deep end?

Misbah himself took over TEST captaincy out of no where. West Indies also gives captaincy to players who have good leadership skills not by the number of games they have played.

People use this as an excuse.

Azhar Ali never had anyones backing or trust, and he was not as bad as everyone made him to look.

Under Azhar, we were crossing 250.

yes his performance as a batsmen was an embarrassment.

Having the 2nd highest odi batting avg in Pakistan is embarrassment :irfan
Zaheer Abbas must be a joker then

Great to see Misbah is still giving his haters heartburn. Love it.

yes a brainless person who took a country that can't play at home to the no.1 rank.

I would take a brainless like him over smartassses behind pcs anyday

Azhar Ali wasn't as bad as he was made to look.

The guy never had proper bowlers with him. He didn't even have a proper spinner in his arsenal.

Just as he was dropped, Shadab came out from PSL.

Plus, Azhar was taking our ODI team pass the 250 mark

Misbah's words would receive more positive feedback if he had retired by now instead of continuing for the foreseeable future.

Misbah's performance as a batsman was an embarrassment but Shoaib Malik's wasn't. :malik

He is finished as batsman for long time.
What are his scores in Australia in latest series??

Regarding odi avg, it's meaningless if you scores so slowly that you lose most of times.

Tactically inept captain and shameless human being.
He failed in psl and as per himself he should have decided to go based on psl performance..but no, his son is his mentor.

Anyway, this is the norm in Pakistan, where 83 old was emotionally blackmailed to give misbah a chance so he can on high notes.

Anyway, he over spent his goodwill and will be judged harsly in history.

Pakistan won one ODI under hafeez in Australia. .. first in several years. Malik scored 40+ and was not out...and as a bowler he had the lowest ER.

You can post Malik's avg in Australia in latest series here. (It's more than 68)

it was not his problem to go with buddies and no idea how to use a leggi....bro u cant defend him for his pathetic captaincy//

I wish I could have those 6 years back. Have been torture under his captaincy. Absolutely destroyed our ODI team and enjoyed milking teams lacking ability against spin on UAE graveyards, who always served his buddies ahead of young players. I don't think any passionate Pakistani fan has enjoyed Pakistan team under his tenure.

He was completely waste of space in ODI team a total misfit but he managed to linger on and captain for 4 years. Pathetic. why I had to witness such a dreadful player leading our team with his overconfidence and average buddies? His strike rate was under 70 as a captain in ODI team batting at 5. How can you be this pathetic and still hold on to your spot? Only in Pakistan a player like Misbah could dictate things. If it wasn't for political changes in PCB Misbah would not have enjoyed long run. He is still milking old guy Shahyrar Khan. He should have some shame and left with dignity after being brought to reality by NZ and Aus. Looked like he completely forgot how to bat when he lands in Sri Lanka,NZ,Aus,SA England. 1 or 2 hundred out of UAE and rest all in UAE.

FTB who enjoyed undeserved long run as a captain has too much to talk. Don't think sane people can defend him more than that he managed to keep team out of controversy. That will be only his achievement. Otherwise he was totally inept at captaincy or batting when he stepped out of UAE.

Misbah asking for Azhar to be made captain was pure example of his wrong use of power for his buddies and explains everything about his nonexsistent future planning. He always used overaged players and ordinary players for his short term success. Always tried to make room for test buddies in ODI team ahead of youngsters. I don't know how can he defend his decision to drop Harris Sohail after his first series and bring bakc golden boy Shafiq or bench Umar Akmal who had 2 50s in last 3 innings for players like YK and Shafiq? Misbah totally destroyed Umar Akmal test career based on one rare unlucky dismissal despite the fact that Umar was returining from a very good test seriea in WI. And what about his comments on Zimbabwe tour? Shameful individual who misused his powers.

Just don't want to be disrespectful to Legendary Captain and Honest Servant otherwise each and every statement deserves Post Mortem.

Misbah Hope You retire gracefully after West Indies tour. This would be your life's last oppurtunity to do so unless Indian Government agrees to play in UAE.

Old age has got to Misbah or else he'd think straight, this is very unusual from him; never expected such behaviour which is not dignified quiet frankly, I truly hope he calls it a day after the series vs WI's.

Time to retire gracefully is long gone.

When foreign retired captains pleasing for your retirement and you had to write article in response, it demonstrate that you have neither grace nor honor.

How could one defend his tactics against Australia. It was embarrassing for us to listen to australian commentary.

No captain has ever been disgraced in such fashion by cricket experts.

Misbah has shown brilliant mental strength and fight over the years. Coming back from quite a few lows. But he should retire after the West Indies tour.

I thought he would be announcing his retirement on his return to Pakistan but He did not. Every Caltain has a Shelf Life

Looks like the time to retire is right now (though I know it ain't happening).

He indeed has lost his mind to age. I understand anyone'll defend own decision to prolong career, but comments on Azhar actually reels his understanding & philosophy of ODI captaincy & batting.

Hope he at least announces retirement before being sacked & dropped.

Looks like he wants to carry on another 3-4 years and torture continue.

I supported MISBAH , his performances and his decisions initially, but now when he doesnt want to retire and a blocking a youngsters spot in the team is what I'm against at. But today I agree on what he was saying to defend Azhar ali.. His exclusion from the ODI squad is simply pathetic based on his performances, if the replacements are Shehzad and Kamran I would rather go with Azhar ali... Out of the box a test player was rushed to open in ODI and establish himself as an ODI batsman, simultaneously lead the team from the front as captain... The out of box idea of to include him as an ODI opener is good which will help his test game to get momentum but to lead the team at the same time without any good captaincy experience was very poor...

Ever since hafeez become steyn's bunny and they constantly kept losing 3 wickets inside 10 overs I have been calling for Azhar's inclusion as an opener on back of his previous highest score of 90+ carrying the bat in a game against SRL I think before he made centuries..They made hashim amla open in ODIs and his game improved vastly in SR as an example.. Ideally azhar should have opened in CWC2015 in AUS not Jamshed... even his score of 80 or 90 of 110 - 120 balls as an opener would have been priceless... they needed just 240-250 to defend but unfortunately not even putting such scores..

I respect your opinion and it's very clear that you don't like Misbah's captaincy. But one thing you and nobody can take away from him is the fact that it was under his captaincy that he got Pakistan to the number 1 ranking (irrespective whether it was achieved by playing in UAE or whatever). He deserves honorable mention for that in our cricketing books. We will soon have a new captain (most likely Sarfraz) in Tests and then we'll see whether Sarfraz can lead us to the number 1 ranking by playing in UAE. If he can or any Pakistani captain can, then I'll be the first one to come and acknowledge that Misbah wasn't special. Till then Misbah has achieved for us a Test number 1 ranking that apart from Imran, no other captain has achieved. Also we haven't lost a Test series at home under Misbah and spanked England 5-0 at home. I'll be overjoyed if some other captain can beat England 5-0 in UAE over two tours but I know that won't happen ever again.

yes he did well but we have to mention that what type of team he is giving to sarfaraz...zero preparation for future..unfortunately srfaraz has to rebuilt this team ...a clear lack of vision ,in odi the less said about it the better it is ..

You have to wonder though, had it been any captain would they have also won with Ajmal and then later on Yasir in UAE? My answer has to be yes. So mentioning number one is pointless really. His captaincy was excellent in England though. Our team performed like lions instead of timid kittens.

As for the topic, he is a legend no doubt. Under him we finally saw a period no fighting, no back stabbings, no drama baazi. However its time to go now. He is damaging his legacy by staying on and on.

My point is that don't assume that just because Pakistan had Ajmal and later on Yasir, we won matches. Captaincy plays a role in allowing those bowlers to flourish and take wickets. Would Ajmal flourish under the captaincy of Aminul Islam? Probably not. However I acknowledge, Misbah's captaincy was horrendous in Australia. Don't know what happened to him there.

I agree. I think he should've retired after Australia. However, I don't believe that Misbah thinks about legacy and rightly so. Misbah as captain was necessary till Australia so he stayed despite the fact that he could've retired on a high after England series. But Pakistan doesn't require Misbah's captaincy now after Australia so he should've retired.

Guys like Yasir or Ajmal would never have been selected in the first place.

I have seen enough cricket before Misbah took over. Pakistan never had the guts to play 2 full time spinners, because of the fast bowling ego we always had. I remember in the intial days of Misbah how posters on Pakpassion use to bash Misbah for relying on spinners more than on fast bowlers. People would say he has destroyed our reputation made us timid cats and what not.

Thing is, Misbah doesn't play his cricket on reputations of his team or opposition, he always goes with the conditions. Thus in UAE we saw two spinners being used.
In Pakistani wickets even, we barely used 2 fulltime spinners, we would use kaneria and some part timer.

I still remember the embarrassing test bowling of the Indo Pak 2007 series. At one point even Sohail Tanvir was bowling spin.

And another proof of other captains is what Shahid Afridi did in World T20 2016. Indian wickets are known for being spin friendly, Pakistan took 2 spinners back in 2011 due to the conditions. For the world t20 2016 India match, Afridi didnt even had any spinners in his squad, infact for the playing 11, he had only 1 part timer against the India match and the rest were fast bowlers.

Afridi overlooked the conditions and went with the reputation that oh India can play spin and are weak agaisnt Pace bowling.

Little did Afridi know, the week before that India played New Zealand, New Zealand spinners arn't that great but yet they played 2 or more spinners and Satner was all over India with his massive spin.

So to say that if there was some other captain in place of Misbah he would had got similar results, my friend you are very wrong there.

Reading of pitch and assessing of conditions, there was no one better at it than Misbah.

He always made his selections based on conditions not on reps, and thats why we had success. He also had the guts of listening to criticism if his plans didn't go accordingly, but he still did what he knew was right.

He is giving one of the most settled sides ever in the history of Pakistan Test cricket to Sarfraz. You have Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq as seniors now. Ahmed Shehzad was doing very well as opener until that injury in Abu Dhabi to Corey Anderson. You have three bowlers who are a shoe-in for every match (Wahab, Amir and Yasir). The only positions up for grabs are 1) Opener 2) Fourth bowler 3) Number 5 after Misbah retires. So you have 8 players in your team that Sarfraz doesn't have to replace in the immediate future and you're asking "What type of team he is giving to Sarfraz?"

Also Misbah retired from ODIs in 2015. It's 2017 now. So the type of team we have in ODIs right now is also Misbah's fault? Really? Till when will you blame Misbah. Till the 2023 World Cup?

anyone mentining number 1 test ranking should also mention test lost to club level zimbo team...6 losses in a row due to old zumbis playing in the team for the sack of it...where cpatain job was just to go for the toss..

Yeah Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe. So? England lost to Bangladesh too by losing 10 wickets in 1 session. Things happen. No need to get emotional.

first of all....the team he is giving to sarfaraz is having 3 genuine players 1 yasir shah who is not good these days but i will take it...2 azhar ali 3 sarfarz himself...shafiq wel all know is mental midget and choke under pressure with no guts at all..yunus on the verge of retirement ..wahab.....rubbish and his test stats suggests it if i am wrong...amir is nt misbah`s team member as wel all know he was beast pre 2010 but ordinaray now with 42 averege per wicket... no opener with good experience...no middle oerder batsman in the line.....babr has to develop under sarfo..no offi..no allrounder at all neither spinner nor medium fast because of saving buddies ....this team has one stteled opener number 7 keeper and a spinner...upto some extent wahab is good .....no right arm pacer......your 2nd part..england lost to a team who has been absolutely at tehir best at home and dominant...and most importantly on the rise but we lost to a team who has no business in tests...and our 2011 loss to wi was also shame ...6 defeats in a row is not worthy to discuss...

Also Misbah retired from ODIs in 2015. It's 2017 now. So the type of team we have in ODIs right now is also Misbah's fault? Really? Till when will you blame Misbah. Till the 2023 World Cup?

Yeah Pakistan lost to Zimbabwe. So? England lost to Bangladesh too by losing 10 wickets in 1 session. Things happen. No need to get emotional.

The ODI team he gave to Azhar Ali was whitewashed against Bangladesh taking our rankings to 9 and we might be struggling for direct qualification for world cup.

The test team he is leaving managed six defeats in a row and is ranked no.6.. If it was one of the most settled team it would not haven taken a jump from 1 to 6 in a matter of few months. This team is filled with players with reputation. There has been zero bench strength. This is the same team that managed to lose within one session.
Zulifqar Babar,Imran Khan snr.,Junaid Khan were his favorite toys when he played in UAE -- short term prospects. If he was any serious in leaving a team for future he would not have relied on old aged Zulifqar and opening with trundlers like Imran Khan. The fact is Misbah always cared about his short term success. He never build team for future. Yasir Shah was forced to play when Ajmal's chucking got banned otherwise I would have seen Ajmal+Zulifqar combo still bowling for us.

first of all....the team he is giving to sarfaraz is having 3 genuine players 1 yasir shah who is not good these days but i will take it...2 azhar ali 3 sarfarz himself...shafiq wel all know is mental midget and choke under pressure with no guts at all..yunus on the verge of retirement ..wahab.....rubbish and his test stats suggests it if i am wrong...amir is nt misbah`s team member as wel all know he was beast pre 2010 but ordinaray now with 42 averege per wicket... no opener with good experience...no middle oerder batsman in the line.....babr has to develop under sarfo..no offi..no allrounder at all neither spinner nor medium fast because of saving buddies ....this team has one stteled opener number 7 keeper and a spinner...upto some extent wahab is good .....no right arm pacer......your 2nd part..england lost to a team who has been absolutely at tehir best at home and dominant...and most importantly on the rise but we lost to a team who has no business in tests...and our 2011 loss to wi was also shame ...6 defeats in a row is not worthy to discuss...
I completely agree with you.

the most settled opener is also the one who was forced out of his comfortable position because Baber scoring three hundreds in a row made his spot in test XI so there was no settled opener that Misbah carried. He dropped one of the most successful opening player in Ahmed SHehzad for SHAN MASOOD. How incompetent you have to be as a captain to drop one guy scoring against NZ and Australia for the likes of Shan Masood..This is what Misbah has been..a clueless captain. He didn't build any replacement for himself or YK. He always enjoyed having squad full of bowlers because he or YK never wanted to rest even in a dead rubber game or even on a tour to club level team Zimbabwe.

You have to only watch his angry interview after beating mighty Zimbabwe in the first test in 2013 to get an idea about his mindset. He treated Pakistan national team as if it was his own mohalla team.

Friends? Hafeez is still being selected in LOI cricket..did Misbah select him? How come you are not blaming Sarfaraz for selecting TTF's?? No offie groomed? You are talking as if world class offies are grown on trees where they can be easily picked. Can you name any replacements? Most of your posts are delusional nonsense.
MRSN recycling same old delusions. Same guy who waits for Pakistan to lose so that he can start a bring back Umar DeVillers thread. These are 'fans' of Pakistan cricket.

i have,nt watched it...i really admire his controveries free period and some of his golden victories like in eng and in UAE..but lack of planning for the future..accomodation of his buddies and hanging on for more than 10 test where his job is to just go for the toss will always leave painful on my mind..

if there was no offi then how many chances he gave to yasir before ajmal ban...how he didnt pick raza hassan?? why did he dropped nasir jamsheed for UAE test while gave him just two tests on most deffficult tour of SA.while hafeez despite giving catching practice to the slip not only played all 3 tests but also came back to the squad for srilnak and UAE tests...all of us know that all rounders are always groomed..did he tried any in tests?? no did he tried any in odi..yess but just for a match or two then threw them away,,,

Raza Hasan is banned duhhh. You can't even name replacements. Are the cricket academies there to serve lassi & daal? Should they not be grooming future stars? Nasir Jamshed?? The same guy that flourished under Misbah but fell away..look where he is now! What allrounders? Why have they not been picked for WI tour? Is that Misbah fault too??

Answer this question: why are you not blaming Sarfaraz for selecting TTF's???

You need to take off your conspiracy theory glasses & come to the real world- Pakistan cricket has gone downhill & that is a fact. Wake up from your delusions.

Misbah is the most polarizing figure in Pakistan cricket after Afridi.

One side believes he did nothing but harm for Pakistan team.

The other side believes that Misbah is some hero who has done nothing but raise the level of Pakistan team.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle, but both the sides are so stubborn on their opinions, that both can't think to concede defeat.

Most of us accept that he is not perfect & should have retired by now.

bro raza hassan free ban period .he was very good in domestic and had a fantastic t20 wc and misbah was forced to play him in UAE in 2014 but he was not willing to give him a go before that because misbah was ok with short term goals with 38 years old offie...the problem is not that jamseehd faded away..the problem is that how did hafeez come back to UAE while nasir didnt ????and yess fahim ashraf who i dont think is good with the bat has been selected already with asghar as well to bring variety to spin attack,,but again it is huge differnece for being captain for good 7 years in 2 formats and just for 3 months in only one format and we have already seen 6 consective wins....can u expalin why was haris not given extetnded run after wi tour and babr not selected in 2014 despite scoring hundred against aussie?// in pakistan u groom ur players by giving international exposure....bro take it with good heart otherwise the list is too lenghty and i dont have much time...the last but not the leasthe has no shame in goin just for ltoss in his last ten test matches and contribute nothing/....

no they are certainly not sarfu selection as he is new with the job but we all know how much influence misbah had in his entire 7 years that even he is prolonging his career by just going for the toss....sarfu is nt that great but here we are talkiing about misbah dont drag the topic here and there...

Thanks for proving my point & fan hypocrisy

If one bowler is performing consistently, why does a captain HAVE to introduce another bowler? Yasir didn't get his chance because Ajmal was world class at that time. Do you blame Steve Waugh for not playing Stuart MacGill when Warne was tearing it apart in Test cricket? I'm sure not. Once Warney retired, MacGill got his chance. That's how things work. Ajmal got banned so Yasir got his chance. If Yasir continues taking wickets in Test cricket, 5 years down the line, would you blame Sarfraz for not picking Shadab in Test cricket? If you would, then you are being very stupid. That's all I have to say. And no captain has an OBLIGATION to leave a team for the other captain. A good captain will make his own team. Misbah didn't receive a great team himself. Ricky Ponting inherited an aged bowling attack that retired within 2-3 years of his captaincy. Every captain has to carve his own niche. Easy to blame the predecessor.
