KARACHI: Pakistan Test cricket captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Saturday spoke out against the decision to exclude Azhar Ali from the One Day International squad and stated that he was not in favour of showing leniency to fixers.
Misbah-ul-Haq did not mince words when it came to stating his views about former ODI captain Azhar Ali's exclusion from the squad. Misbah stated that Azhar Ali must be disappointed at the decision and one should make sure that cricketers are not disheartened.
"Team selection should not be done based on media reports," said the Test skipper. "When a cricketer performs, that is not highlighted as much as when he fails to deliver," he added.
Praising Mohammad Asghar and Shadab Khan, Misbah said that he was concerned about the performance of the fast bowlers in recent times.
"Our bowlers do not fare well when we tour abroad," he said.
He said that Saeed Ajmal should not be neglected at every level and stated that Pakistan was in dire need of off-spinners. Misbah also spoke about the West Indian team and said that the Windies had nothing to lose in the series against Pakistan.
"West Indian batting is weak, the whole team is not," he said. "They have century-makers till the number 7 spot in their batting line-up," he added.
Misbah also said that in the series against Pakistan, Windies would be under less pressure. He also shed light on his retirement plans, stating that he alone would take the decision.

Misbah-ul-Haq:
"If you bash a player who is putting in so much effort for Pakistan then this is bound to happen" on Azhar leaving captaincy of ODI team
"If I had listened to the criticism from the media then I would have left cricket 6-7 years ago"
"My mentor is my son who advises me all the time"
"If you do well people will praise you, if you dont do well then the same people will criticise you"
"There is nothing wrong with the Test team as the same team has performed very well in the past 6-7 years"
"The new guys will need to adjust to international cricket very soon if we wish to survive and be counted as a top team of the world"
"I would blame everyone for this including media, as lot of unnecessary pressure was built upon him"
"He (Azhar) has a decent average of 38 in ODIs and we just seem to be targeting his weaknesses and not talking about his strengths"
"Why would anyone put themselves under such pressure?"
"Must be very difficult for any player to be in this situation" on Azhar Ali being removed as captain and then dropped from ODI side.
"I am definitely concerned about our fast-bowling as we have suffered due to that in New Zealand and Australia tours"
"Our fast bowlers should have a killer instinct which we are lacking"
"We have done well in UAE conditions but struggle in other conditions"
"Amir and Wahab are lacking consistency in terms of wicket taking ability"
"Shadab has a great googly and has an excellent temperament"
"We are still not seeing any effective bowlers in the off-spinner category"
"Saeed Ajmal is obviously hurt on being ignored by the PCB but I am sure those who took the decision know what the reasons are for this"
"Playing against a side like the West Indies is always difficult as they have little pressure and have nothing to lose"
"When trying to decide about my retirement, I will need to consider what the Board wants of me and what is best for the team"
"The disrespectful manner in which the senior players and captains are discussed in the media makes you wonder if you have done something wrong"
"My four below par Test matches in NZ & Aus seem to weigh more than my performances in the last 7 years, this seems to be the way of thinking of some"
"You feel anger for people who cannot say one positive thing about you and consistently spread negativity about you"
"We need to make sure we have a set rule to deal with people who indulge in corruption"
