"If I was unfair with anyone (regarding selection), I would like them to forgive me": Inzamam-ul-Haq

Inzamam-ul-Haq press conference:

"I spoke to the Chairman and MD on Monday and said that I do not wish to continue in this position"

"I took this role up in 2016 and spent more than 3 years in this role, it went well and I am content with my tenure"

"I think new people should come with new ideas and new thoughts"

"The Test Championship is coming up, there a T20 World Cup and other things so I think even if I stayed on for a year or 2, it wouldn't be fair on the next selection committee"

"Whoever replaces me should get proper time, I have contributed as much as I could in the last 3 years"

"I am thankful to the PCB for backing my decisions, I am also thankful towards the team"

"I did all that I could. I have time till the end of this month, I will serve till then but I have requested the board to free me from this position after that"

"The Chief Selector has the right to consult with the captain and coach but the ultimate decision is ours. Similarly, for the playing XI the captain and coach can consult with me, but the final decision is theirs"

"If the board offers me another role, I am available if it suits me but I would not like to be involved with selection"

"I have not had discussions with the board about any other role"

"The team's performance has been good. We won the last 4 matches in the World Cup and beat both the finalists. We were unlucky to not reach the semis due to NRR. If luck was in our favour, the team had the ability to win the World Cup. All the experts felt Pakistan can win the World Cup"

"Shoaib Malik was in the team for the past 3 years and played almost all the ODIs. He had good performances and he was selected due to that. Unfortunately he didn't perform but that could have happened with another player as well. I think he is a very good player but sometimes it happens that you can't perform"

"If you compare where we were in ODIs and Tests 3 years ago, we're better now. We came to #1 in Tests and in the World Cup, we were ousted from semis on the basis of NRR. We have been #1 in T20Is since last 1.5-2 years"

"When we started our tenure, a lot of players were finishing their careers. Since 2016, we have included a lot of youngsters in the team in all formats. These are youngsters who can serve Pakistan for 10-15 years and insha'Allah they will become world class players and win a lot for Pakistan. In selection, I think we brought a lot of youngsters in the team and performances should be good going forward"

"When I wasn't part of the Pakistan board and selection, in 2012 Imam was selected for Under-19s. In the 2014 Under-19 World Cup, he was the vice-captain. So our cricket has this pathway to come into international cricket via performances. People criticise a lot but I am seeing a guy who is the first opener with a 50+ average after 30-40 games. Like others are Pakistani players, he is also one. He has given outstanding performances"

"When Imam make 800-850 runs in a FC season, Grant Flower came to me and said he should be in the team. After that, when we were discussing about his selection, I moved to the side and let the others discuss it and Mickey Arthur was also there. Imam has been part of the team for the last 40 matches, you say he has been playing because of me, but there is a captain and coach also. We should look at performances and not become personal with criticism"

"In the last 3 years, Fakhar was amongst our best performers as an opener. If you have a good player, and if his performances go down a bit, instead of dropping him you should give him confidence. I will give you the example of Martin Guptill who struggled a lot for NZ but they persisted with him throughout the World Cup because he was one of their main players. You rely on your main players and give them confidence"

"I am a human being so I can't say that my selections were 100% and that I made all correct decisions. I can make mistakes. If I was unfair with anyone, I would like them to forgive me for my mistake. I can make mistakes but the intentions are always clean"

"Our team's average age when you take out some of the older players is around 23. A lot of the players have come in the team recently. Many of them have played 30, 40, 60 games. According to my understanding of cricket, a lot of these players can become world class cricketers. But these decisions are up to the next selection committee and my best wishes for them"

"The decision to rest players against Australia was my decision and I stand by that. We couldn't beat Australia but the matches were close. Our bench strength was tested"

"A captain is the leader of the side and needs to be confident so that he can impart the same to his team. I am not in favour of series by series basis captaincy, I think you should fully support whoever you appoint as captain and give them a long term"

"Our FC system is being changed and there are a lot changes taking place. In the whole world, you have all types of pitches. At Perth you know it's a fast pitch, Adelaide is a batting pitch, Sydney is a turning pitch. Our grounds should also have some character and I think the board is working on this, as it improves, our cricket as a whole will also improve"

"I want to share something here. I was captain for a match against India in Multan and we lost by an innings at 100+ runs. A big player whose name I won't take said that Pakistan lost very badly and played really bad cricket. I called him up and said I lost by an innings and 100 runs. Why are you telling me I played badly? Is that something that needs to be said? I asked him that this gutter I've fallen in, how do I get out of it? So my request to everyone is that good and bad performances keep happening"

"After we didn't play well initially, there was lots of talk in the media and rumours. Does this help the Pakistan team? Does that type of criticism put the team in a better position? When we lost the initial matches, people started talking about fighting and grouping, then we won 4 in a row and no one said anything about that again. When we have something of our own, which the Pakistan team is, I think the players should be supported"

But we are told by experts Syed1 that Inzi forced sarfraz to play Malik in the playing 11 oh is it mickey now? Sorry i forgot.

There is no metric that shows Malik performed in the last 3 years.

Fair enough. I am loathe to criticize Inzi, but his faith in hafeez and Malik lead to this

Don't care much for Inzi as a selector but him leaving is the best thing that could have happened for Imam. Hopefully this will ease some pressure on the poor guy.

Inzy brought about Fakhar, Imam, Shaheen, Hasnain, Shadab and some others. He has created a good group of solid top level cricketers, some of whom are very young and can play on for another decade.

The management is needed to groom these players and coaches to keep them in good enough condition and improvement to play on for that time period.

I have not been a fan of including Hafeez, Riaz and now Malik but these things are all part of the selection process.

Seems like plenty of change is on the horizon for PCB, its domestic structure and everyone below it. We won't know whether it'll turn out for the better but at least they see that change is necessary.

Hopefully, the new chief selector is a fresh, bright mind who not only knows how to scout talent but also make decisions/selections based on analytical thoughtful process. They also need to look at a body of work for a player instead of "uhh, who's our hottest player in domestic right now?".

There's plenty of young players that deserve a chance and the goal should be to find deserving young players who will be a part of the next WC, especially since the current crop of young players we have currently will be more in their prime and veterans by then.

Takes a big man to stand up and admit his mistakes. We forgive you Inzi for putting up with Shoaib Malik and others like him. There was also no point in taking Hasnain to the WC when he wasn't even given a chance to replace an off form Hasan Ali. You Inzi will always be a legend.

Inzamam is missing hte point here.

When Imam was being discussed he is saying that he moved to the side and let them dicuss, atleast you are being bias here by saying that you were not going to reject his selection.

His biggest problem was that he kept on selecting Malik and Hafeez otherwise his selection tenure has been good

Wow! Good on Inzi!

Inzamam's tenure wasn't perfect . . but whos was? Wasim Bari? Moin Khan? Rashid Latif? Aamer Sohail? Salahuddin Sallu?

Inzamam has done more for this team than any one of those in the past . . a big reason why Pak cricket was in constant decline since 2010/2011 . .

Yes, his biggest failure was not creating a succession plan for Malik and Hafeez . . Another failure was not to develop a good front line spin option (especially for test matches after Yasir) . .

But anyway, as he is now gone . . I choose look at the positives rather than the negatives . . in his time as chief selector, he has given us a good group of players who form the CORE of this Pakistan team and if they continue to improve (hopefully), will serve Pak for a long time . .

Babar, Shadab, Hassan, Shaheen, Fakhar, Imam, Mohammad Abbas, Shan (rediscovered Shan) . . these are all players who have potential to serve Pak for a long time and most of them are mainstays in the national team . . I can't remember a single selector who has left while the future looks better than it did when the CS came in!

Overall, job well done! Thank you Inzamam!

Classy, unlike some of his critics.

A bit cringe with all of these pictures of Inzi knowing these boys did not write the emotional messages with them. Clearly there is a big ‘you Scratch my back, I scratch yours’ lobby in the PCB. Most of these boys were having the ride of their life due to Inzi

Imam averages 50 odd in ODI Cricket.

His List A doesn't even matter anymore, he's performed in International Cricket.

The same agent who manages Inzi manages these players. He no doubt has access to their social media accounts :)

People give him a lot of ****

But there’s quite a few new faces he introduced who’ve become trademark Pakistan players now.

Yes Hafeez and Malik backing was bad but think of his predecessors and how many past it deadweight seniors they pushed on the team, sometimes 6-7 at a time, there was a time when Anwar Ali and Sohail Tanvir were opening our bowling 4-6 years ago with Younis coming in at 3. Anyone remember?

Yeah after all that Inzi wasn’t too bad. I give him a solid 7/10.

To be honest Inzi got too much stick but by and large he gave Mickey and Sarfaraz the team they wanted. If there was any criticism, he should have put his foot down with the team management a lot more than he did on why certain players selected by the selectors not being selected by the team management and used properly

I think this actually shows that international cricket wickets are more conducive and supportive for Pakistani batsmen in comparison to the domestic wickets they play on. Because a lot of Pakistani domestic bowlers having Malcolm Marshall like domestic bowling averages were found wanting and exposed in international cricket bowling at low speeds and not having good stamina in their later spells.

The domestic cricket wickets need to be made par with international cricket

Haha, which explains why all the posts thanking Inzi are grammatically similar.

So are you claiming that those heartfelt posts by Pakistan players are not sincere & just a mere PR stunt?

I don't understand why people criticize the selections of Malik and Hafeez. On merit, their selections were justifiable. It's easy to say in hindsight it was an awful decision, but honestly speaking, it was understandable why they were picked. Hafeez averaged just under 50 at a strike rate of 100+ in the series vs SA. Plus his bowling is good for the balance of the team, so it's understandable why he was picked.

As for Malik, he was vice captain as he captained in Sarfaraz's absence when he was banned/rested. Shoaib Malik averaged 34 in that series vs Australia, not amazing, but not bad enough for his selection to be called 'shocking' seeing as he had been a main stay in our team since that Zimbabwe series in 2015.

Really think Inzi did a solid job picking young players. Easily the best selector we had. Our next selector will be picking Anwar Ali and Khurram Manzoor. They'll check whose got highest batting average and lowest bowling average.

So are you claiming that those heartfelt posts by Pakistan players are not sincere & just a mere PR stunt?

You make what you want of it, I'm just stating what I know regarding Inzi and a number of players.

Great all selectors should come select their relatives then offer an apology later on.

:amir

Interesting. They better hope the next guy is also represented by their agent otherwise we could see a complete overhaul.

The selectors had no choice but to pick Malik and Hafeez for the wc, no team goes to such a premier tournament without experience. However Malik deservedly got dropped in the middle of the tournament and now both players should be moved on.

Too late , too little Inzi, damage is done , but hopefully Pak cricket will recover.

So are you claiming that those heartfelt posts by Pakistan players are not sincere & just a mere PR stunt?

Think about it, these cricketers cant speak proper English but their tweets are so well crafted?

He was only unfair to fawad Alam, but thankfully he is a hockey player

There are really idiots out there who think Imam ul Haq doesn't deserve to be on the team

There is no metric that shows Malik performed in the last 3 years.

Yes, that is true. He should never been given all those chances. Cricket fans from other countries always wonder & ask me. Why we play Shoaib Malik?
It is time to end the Parche culture.

There are really idiots out there who think Imam ul Haq doesn't deserve to be on the team

I don't know why, He has been performing consistently. However fans especially the ones that don't understand cricket and are obsessed with strike rates only. Keep attacking him

Pakistan's outgoing chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq says the tenure has been the most challenging of his professional career as he was subjected to "hurtful criticism" for picking his nephew Imam-ul-Haq in the team.

Inzamam, whose tenure ends on July 31, said that critics and some former players focussed merely on criticising his nephew.

"Imam, I think would not have survived for so long in the Pakistan team and international cricket if he was not a performer. He had already played junior cricket for Pakistan and done well in domestic cricket even before I became chief selector but this fact was ignored by the critics which was hurtful for me," he said.

"Being chief selector has been the most challenging role of my cricket career as I was heavily criticised for my decisions and I couldn't respond much," he added.

The 23-year-old Imam has played 10 Tests and 36 ODIs for Pakistan and his selection has often been criticised by ex-players.

The former captain and batting mainstay conceded that working as chief selector has been tough.

Inzamam, who appeared in 120 Tests, stepped down after a three-year tenure which ended with Pakistan not qualifying for the semi-finals of the World Cup in England.

But during his tenure, Pakistan won the Champions Trophy in 2017 in England and also became world number one in the ICC T20 rankings.

Inzamam said cricket is his life and he would always be involved with the sport in some capacity even after stepping down as chief selector.

"I can't leave cricket it is my passion," he said.

Inzamam, who came under fire for going to England before the World Cup and getting directly involved in team matters, said he had gone there with the permission of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

"I did my best to help them out. Our team didn't do badly but luck didn't favor us many times. As chief selector I did my best to pick new talent and give them proper opportunities as they are the future of Pakistan cricket," he said.

Inzamam is tipped to get a fresh assignment when the cricket board sits down next week to review the performance of the team in the last three years.

Head coach, Mickey Arthur is scheduled to give a presentation to the cricket committee next Monday.

Pakistan plays nine Tests, nine ODIs and some 16 T20 internationals in the run-up to the ICC World T20 Cup in Australia in October-November next year.

Please apologize to the below. Looks like the common theme was to protect Imam so other openers are not given a chance, protect seniors like Malik and Hafeez and the crappy Imad Wasim hence all the batting collapses with such a weak middle order. Protect Hassan Ali and M Amir, all the poor performances and out of form and injuries they still got extended runs, guys like MIrfan, Junaid, Shinwari were discarded at first opportunity.

I guess with Sarfraz it was more a management choice to get rid of him.
