"If we can trade onions, tomatoes then why not play cricket" : Shoaib Akhtar on Ind-Pak series

Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar batted for the resumption of India-Pakistan cricketing ties. Akhtar minced no words in criticizing all stakeholders for the long gap between an India and Pakistan bilateral series. The last time an India-Pakistan bilateral series took place was in 2012-13 when Pakistan travelled to India for a three-match ODI series. Even that happened after a gap of 5 years. The last time these two countries played a Test match was back in 2007. Both the countries, however, have been facing each other regularly in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups.

“We can play Davis Cup, we can play Kabaddi with each other then what’s wrong with cricket? I understand India can’t come to Pakistan, Pakistan can’t go to India but we play Asia Cup, Champions Trophy on neutral venues, can’t we do the same for bilateral series?” Akhtar asked in his youtube channel.

“We are one of the best hospitable nations in the world and India have seen it first hands. Ask the likes of Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar we love them like anything. Cricket should not get affected by the differences between us. Hopefully, India and Pakistan can play a bilateral series soon and it’s important for both countries to have a tough competition between them,” he added.

Akhtar also suggested neutral venues for an India vs Pakistan bilateral series.

“Pakistan is a very safe place to travel. India’s Kabaddi team came, they got a lot of love, Bangladesh came to play Test cricket. But if there are still doubts then I suggest neutral venues,” Akhtar said.

The Rawalpindi express also went on to say state that all ties should be cut off if India and Pakistan cannot play cricket.

“If you want to cut the ties then stop the trade, stop playing Kabaddi. Why only cricket? Whenever it’s cricket we make it political, it is very disappointing. We eat onions and tomatoes, we exchange pleasantries then why can’t we play cricket?” He added.

Commenting on the importance of the India-Pakistan bilateral series, Akhtar said it is better for cricket and also for business. “It’s very important for India and Pakistan to play because it earns revenue, it brings the fans, it inspires and it also keeps the healthy rivalry going. We get to see new players who can handle this pressure. I urge everyone to come forward and make India-Pakistan bilateral series possible,” he said.

There is no point in bilateral series at neutral venue like UAE as neither PCB or BCCI will benefit much financially. Remember in 2004 when India visited pakistan tensions between countries reduced and musharaff was received quite well when he visited india in 2004

so if it bilateral it has to either in pakistan or in India. No point in financially helping other countries like UAE.

Its like two cats fight for bread and a monkey takes advantage of both

The panderer strikes again. For Shoaib Akhtar a sentence consists of a noun, a verb, and India.

The only tomato & onions that will be traded will be the fans pelting this poor pak team with 1 proper batsman Baba Azam in it if they play India currently.

Pak have only beaten Ind twice in the last 7/8 years that too it were super human efforts from Fakhar Zaman & shahid Afridi, the gulf in class of the 2 teams is embarrassing good thing we don’t play them otherwise that proud 75-45 record would have been long gone!!

I concur with akhtar.....India should visit pakistan after T20 WC

right now, we have stopped even trading onions and tomatoes .. thanks but no thanks Actor.

Not a good thing we don’t play - Pak takes heavy losses then so be it - still rather play, would be a crowd puller and still a money maker I imagine too, from commercial perspective.

Understand BCCI have plenty of options and have no financial incentive given their earnings power elsewhere.

Agree with Shoaib...bilateral series must start soon. Its been more than a decade now that we have played a test series. I personally dont care much about LOIs but we must play tests.
Junaids - Any chance of Ind vs Pak WTC final in Lords?

India didn't play against Pakistan in 60's, early and mid 70's and early and mid 90's.
So there is a history they haven't played for decades due to many reasons Or Vice versa.

Why are some Pakistanis obsessed with India-Pakistan cricket?.This actor has lost all respect from me.He should keep his mouth shut.I hope Pakistan never plays with India.

75 - 45?
it's 73-55 buddy. Don't exaggerate the figures.

Even I'm obsessed with Indo-Pak cricket, and I'm not a Pakistani.

Trading is a win-win situation. Playing cricket is a win-lose situation and one side's sorry is other side's joy.

india pakistan matches used to be another level , but the gulf between the teams is extremely wide now. India will beat the daylight out of pakistani team and without younis khan there isnt anyone to score against them.

Only those who have experienced Indo Pak matches can understand it. :inti
I have seen India-Pakistan matches.there is nothing special about them.My blood boils when Pakistanis keep begging India to play. This is shameful. We should forget about playing Inidna again. If I had the power I would stop Pakistan team playing Indian even in ICC events.

Shoib Akhtar knows he will surpass Jeff Bezoz if Ind-Pak play and he trashes our team if they lose.

Babar Azam is more than capable of scoring heavily against India. But how much support he gets from his co-batters is a big question. Younis had the likes of Inzi, Yousuf etc.

Against top spinners on Indian soil , I am still not sold on him.

He is right. Why play kabbadi or snooker or fight them in MMA then?

Just boycott India completely stop importing tomatoes from India and stop exporting onions as well.

that means you will never be sold, I mean, what more does the guy need to do other than performing in every single country!

He still only has 4 hundreds , his test career has just started. Let him first perform for a couple of more years .

Er....what? Don't you need tomatoes to make curry?
Coming to topic, nobody cares about kabaddi or snooker in India but everyone "knows" about cricket.
