Impact of social media on our lives

Personally I am trying to reduce my time on social media. Have deactivated my facebook, rarely use twitter now and the impact of these changes have been good.

I left most of the social sites 2.5 years back. Just active on quora as of now. Quite happy with my decision coz it was really affecting my life badly back then..

I hate social media. I am a young person so people expect you to have stuff like Instagram, snapchat and what not. I am more of a face to face person who likes to keep real contact and look for meaningful relationships over fake friends, followers and likes. So when meeting new people they always feel a bit wierded out when I say I don't have any of that stuff. Though recently I feel the pressure to get on with the new technology, cause especially girls are 24/7 active on such platforms and from my observation it is easier to break the ice when you can contact them online. Still not my personality but it is a dilemma.

Lol that's true :D

I've seen family friends fall out with each other due to social medai, I've seen family feuds amongst people I know due to what their kids have posted about one another on social media. I've seen people lose their jobs due to posts on social media.

It's a crazy world.

It's only good for news or for keeping contacts. Too many people get obessed with trying to show they are living a happy, funny, entertaining life or use it to look for attention/sympathy. It says a lot about them. Social media can be a powerful tool too, has been used to promote improtant matters or to call for change/mobilise people. It's not social media but the user who is the issue.

Can be fun and entertaining but can negatively impact people's lives in ways too. People can do crazy stuff for likes, people can lose their jobs because of things they have posted and people can see lots of posts of 'popular' and 'cool' people and feel lonely and not good enough.

It has it pros and cons like almost every other thing in this world. The problem only comes when we get ourselves too much involved in it and this is really become a trend with social media.. its an addiction which one just can't resist. It kind of makes you anti social in a way where in you socialize with people online but off line you don't have time even for your family. A lot of relationships have fallen off or have become dormant because of excess use of social media.

Saj Similarly, I got a job through Facebook ad.

How many of you guys "stalk" other people on sites like Facebook? In the past I used to have pseudo-accounts just to search up people go through profile and look at the pictures while never actually talking to them.

I haven't done this since 2 years now and I feel a lot better. In the past looking at perfect pictures of perfect life would mess with my head. Even now sometimes I feel the urge to look up a certain girl or a crush but I force myself to not do it and it helps a lot with confidence and keeping sanity.

Used to do it a lot after my break-ups to check on my ex. Would go through the profile of every suspicious guy who commented on her pictures to see whether she was dating him. The level of insecurity Oh my God.
Thankfully I'm past that stage now and have quit every social media since (not sure if PP counts).

Instagram is worst imo. Everybody there seems so friggin happy and chilled out posting pics of their latest adventures or expressing love for their girlfriends in every second post and how incredibly lucky they are to have them in their lives.

Hate those conceited types.

PS:  Not to mention the girls showing off with wanderlust written in their bio even though chances are they probably never been out of their stupid small town.

Internet and smart phones are not bad. I wished i had it when i was growing up as a kid. Life would have been so easy peasy

Facebook is completely on another level when it comes to propagating hate speech and bigotry. It's as if the place was specifically designed to cater to the needs of xenophobes around the world.
You have Hindutvas spreading lies and propaganda against Abrahamics and Islamists trying to put down everyone as beneath them and trying to find conspiracy in everything.

It has become so toxic that I feel shocked when I see normal people using it. Every single guy on FB seems to be an expert on literally every topic devised by human ingenuity. You have pseudo historians passionately trying to revise histories to suit their agendas. Every Ramesh or Suresh is an expert economist ready to offer his insights on latest economical issues even though most of them can't even properly spell the term.

Disgusting place really.

My twitter kinda blew up and became kinda famous but it's such a mess.

Instagram is such an eww place. Can't stand it. Just made it a few days back for no reason and will give it away soon.

Snapchat i like. it's nice and you don't have to really do anything. But it drains the battery and data which is annoying so the app overall is annoying.

Facebook I deactivated in 2012. Not worth having it at all.

Anything else, I am unaware of.

You forgot the worst of em all, WhatsApp.

Send this message to 50 people aur aapko jald hi ek khushkhabri milegi.
Or
Agar aap sachhe deshbhakt hai toh is jawan ki tasweer ko zyada se zyada share kijiye.
Or
The famous "kya aap jante hai" facts which my dad love to send me in the morning. For instance, do you know "ek bar Abraham Lincoln Hindustan aaye the aur unhone yahan ki mitti par sar jhuka kar kaha ki aise desh kam hi hue hain jinhone kabhi apani izzat pe aanch nahin aane di"

And don't even get me started on the daily good morning messages sent in family whatsapp groups with a motivational quote along with a Lord Krishna picture.

Looool you family group experience was funny. I don't have the same experience but I am in a religious group prompted by my father where they spam you with religious topics. Luckily I can mute that stuff and never bother to look at it.

For me whatsapp is the only one which is really helpful and can't do without it. Though I am lucky to have friends with brains who never spam me with such chain messages. It is so convenient to plan things together and communicate better than sending SMS or MMS like 7 years ago.

Interesting, is whatsapp generally not a big thing in Sweden? What do you normally use as a goto text messenger?

Seems like you're just salty about something? :najam

Was never really active on any social media site even in HS didn't bother with it when there was a myspace craze. I know too many people who are obessed and what they say about the dopomine effect is true. Some people take social media way too seriously. I really don't care what someone who I probably haven't spoken to in years is having for breakfast, now I just unfollow people who like to post something everyday.

It can magnify anxities which is the negative aspect which is why ya"ll should take up Boxing instead.

The positives are how we can spread awareness about a variety of issues which are of concern or people / pets going missing etc

One of the reasons why it isn't that big is because of iMessaging. A major majority of Swedes are iphone users and almost all of them use packages that come with texting bundled within the package.

Plus if you are working, Slack takes care of everything. And lastly, there's a swedish messenger called Supertext which does a lot of things that whatsapp does and is less intrusive.

I'd not even need Whatsapp if I didn't have family in Pakistan and elsewhere.
