India [224/8] defeat Afghanistan [213] by 11 runs in the 28th match of World Cup 2019

Lol adding insult to injury, a choke and hattrick in the final over of a match they could have won

We need a shami emoticon :moyo

Well done IND. Tested to the limit but held their nerves :)

Well played Afghanistan. Good future ahead if they can find 2 more decent batters.

Well played, just a little too much. That run-out opportunity indeed proved to be decisive. I think, once IND crossed 220, their nose was always a head.

A great match indeed.

in 7 world cup attempts, Pakistan did not stretch India as much as Afghanistan did in 1 attempt.

Good effort.

AFG batting is so poor - they allowed India get away with bowling at 2/3 RPO for large parts of the innings. Thats where this won, not the end.

However it was good bowling too to wrestle control in the middle over.

Well played Afghanistan, great effort for a minnow.

India....the most overated side in the tourny. Kohli is average in world cups and Bumrah cant take enough wickets. How did Pakistan lose to India this year?

The most overrated? India is unbeaten so far, have beaten Australia, and two minnows in Pak and Afghanistan. Bumrah is already better than the convicted felon.

Pakistan lost because its a team full of no talent, unfit hacks. To be honest, they should be happy that they have a full member status.

Good game Afghanistan. Well played.

Blue machine marches on. :vk2

Another round of burnol for the surrender monkeys. :)):)):)):))

Tough talk from the tough guys rotting at the bottom of the table.

Par tailunt bohot hai.:hasan2

What is happening. ? Yesterday English batsmen and now Indian batsmen sucked big time. LOL

India got a little complacent after Pakistan.

But all the credit in the world goes to Afghanistan who pushed the best ODI team to the limit.

Congratulations india!

Well played afghan bowlers and nabi with bat and ball!
Hard to beieve such a pathetic batting side would chuck M. shazad out of their team!

Bangla bros will come hard at india, i have a feeling bangla bros may pull off a famous victory!

Kohli and sharma can't fail now, they have to make up for shikar's absence, can't rely on the other batsman!

This wc after a bad rain spell, is starting to get really good, lets hope the rain stays away!

Bangla bros have 2nd best mental block against india :-) always fun to play vs them regarless of result

Take some churan and chill brother. No need to get hyper over everything.

Lol what a drama queen you are. You were losing your hair when the match was going on and now you are acting very calm. Do this drama in front of someone else and eat that same churan so that next time you come to a match thread you don't abuse any player. :inti

Tbh Virat should have been MoM , though Bumrah was great scoring at 100+ SR on this pitch was the difference in the end

They already did that in 2007 :shakib

Actually it has to be England.India is the only team that has not lost a match in this tourney.England lost to two bottom ranked teams Pak and Lanka.

Thank you Afghans for testing the middle order. Time for team players and team management to analyse the back up plan for Openers, middle order options, 5th bowler option(Pandya had almost killed the match with first two overs) and fielding.

KL Rahul still looking nervous. Not playing big innings

Did anyone asked for your advice?

Bruh, it's free, take it! Might even help in the long run.

Trying to talk sense into the lame apart, well played Afghanistan. Maybe they should have tried a bit harder to rotate strikes in the mid overs. But then, I am sure they planned it but the execution was not quite as good.

Kohli has like 3 fifties in this world cup and is averaging over 60 I think. Well 60 is indeed his batting average so you are probably right.

India kept the pressure on, bowled tight. Afghans batted too slow in the middle overs few of them thought they were playing test cricket. Target was small, pitch was talked about being unplayable- it wasn’t. It was better than 224 for sure. Afghans batters just weren’t taking singles well in the early and middle parts. India gave them a huge chance, got out cheaply, some soft dismissals in the indian batting too, Kohli got out from nowhere as he was batting well.

Overall India didn’t bat well, some excellent bowling by Afghan spinners, restricted to a winnable target. But Afghanistan batting has a long way to go.

Very true. Pakistan is the only team which lost to India in this WC. God knows how. Australia , SAF and Afghans beat India very easily in this WC. And yes, Kohli's batting is worse than that of Mohamad Amir.

Pathetic display . Shows how limited our batting is. Senior dhoni once again playing a near match losing knock. :inti Anyway glad to get two points. Atleast we didn't choke like England yesterday. We need to be better prepared for windies and BD.

I’m trying to understand..How did they beat windies recent times? How do they even chase 240-260 against windies or zimbabwe? I know ind bowling is world class, so is England and afghan got 240 odd against England. They’ll be kicking themselves, for sure. This was getable if they batted well. India gave them a huge chance tbh as Ind batted poorly themselves. Rahmat, Shahidi getting out like that then Zadran, was all too soft and hampered their chase. Nabbi showed pitch was alright if you’re set.

Hats off to Afghanistan to have played such a super game! They will be a handful in the upcoming world cup and tournaments in Asia for sure! Pity they couldn't get past the final line - but well played Bumrah and Shami to get India to the finish line. Bumrah is such a special player!

Congrats Afghanistan for the great fight. Especially Spinners. Everybody knows Afghanistan is a serious threat against any oppo on a dry spinning wicket. England probably would have lost to Afg on a track like this.

I would have loved to have seen your reaction when Nabi got out.

Most sides make the mistake of leaving too much to do in the last over

It was a 260-270 runs pitch. Dhoni should be dropped and Pant should be in the team.

Dhoni is worth keeping for his keeping alone. Not a big fan of this avatar of Dhoni the batsman - but he is a far better keeper than Pant. It's not like Pant has been the epitome of consistency with the bat or on the field either for him to merit a place in the team over Dhoni.

That said, India need Vijay Shankar and Rahul to step up with the bat (Rahul in terms of strike rate)

Dhoni's stumping of Rashid Khan is a good example of how good he his behind the stumps. Don't think any other keeper in the tournament is as fast as him.

It’s said when the eye and ear compete, the eye wins. Replace eye with bat and ear with ball and that, some speculated, would be the narrative of this ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

It was WG Grace – the original beard that’s feared – who allegedly told an opponent, as he picked up the bails and replaced them on the stumps, that ‘they came to see me bat, not you bowl’.

That was more than a century ago, in the days when coloured clothing meant a fancy cap, so perhaps cricket has always been seen a batsman’s game.

All that pre-tournament talk of 500 run innings certainly had the world’s best bowlers arching an anxious eyebrow and desperately plotting the last laugh.

However, in 24 hours of unpredictable and unscripted sporting drama they got their wish, which underlines the danger of writing the story before you know the ending.

First it was Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga proving age hadn’t wearied him, as he condemned England to a shock defeat at Headingley.

Then it was Afghanistan’s spinners taming India at the Hampshire Bowl, only for the world number two side to defend a modest target in an unconventional thriller.

It was an instant classic which proves you didn’t need big hits and relentless boundaries for a match to simmer and fascinate, as India eventually secured a 11-run victory in the final over.

Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat – along with Messrs Sharma, Rahul and Dhoni he was ready to pile on the runs, ramp up the pressure and restore order to the batting order.

Afghanistan admitted they were hurting after being hit for an ODI record 25 sixes by England last time out but how their bowling attack responded.

Sharma – with three one-day double centuries on his India resume – went early, clean bowled by a Mujeeb Ur Rahman delivery that twisted and turned like a magic bullet.

IPL stars Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb are no strangers to India’s batting line-up and their combined 29 overs of savvy spin went for just 97 runs – and accounted for four wickets.

It was less slap and tickle and more prod and poke with 152 dot balls frustrating India, for whom only Kohli really shone.

But make no mistake, this was a textbook bowling display, straight from the pages of a dusty coaching manual, as India searched for fluency while Afghanistan followed the line and length basics – keeping it tight, straight and full.

Set 225 to win, Afghanistan knew this could be a gilt-edged chance for historic victory, only for India’s pace attack, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, to claim six decisive wickets.

Bumrah in full flow is always a joy to watch, six or seven stuttering steps, a skip and a shuffle, followed by undiluted fire and fury.

His pace, control and ability to disguise a remarkable variation of speed make him the complete bowling package, with an average and economy rate which proves the battle between bat and ball doesn’t have to be one-sided.

And he duly turned this match with two wickets in three balls, conjuring full deliveries and short ones as Afghanistan slipped from well-positioned 106/2 to a nervy 106/4.

Gulbadin Naib put up a determined rear-guard but with his team needing 24 off the last three overs, he ran into Shami and Bumrah.

Bumrah kept it tight and Shami, replacing the injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar, finished it off, dismissing Nabi and two tail-enders to grab the tenth hat-trick in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history.

India’s fans duly unfurled their flags, blew their horns and got ready to properly party after an afternoon of high anxiety.

We take life too lightly and sport too seriously, wrote John Arlott, that famous son of cricket here in Hampshire.

Don’t tell the Bharat Army that – unbeaten India are showing how it’s done with bat AND ball and few things mean more.

ICC MEDIA RELEASE

A transformed Afghanistan side employed four spinners of varying paces and styles backed by sharp, committed fielding to give themselves a real chance of beating twice world champions India at the Hampshire Bowl.

But their gallant run chase fell agonisingly short and hopes of an upset comparable to any in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup history vanished.

Afghanistan lost their opening game against defending champions Australia, followed by defeats at the hands of Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa before a 150-run loss to England.

The England match, though, was the first time they had managed to bat out their 50 overs and afterwards their premier spinner Rashid Khan, who conceded 110 runs from nine overs, pointed out that his team had never played South Africa and last met New Zealand four years ago.

Against more familiar opponents in India under welcome sunshine and on a pale white pitch which could have been airlifted from Asia, Afghanistan demonstrated the determination and drive which has dragged them from obscurity to the game’s showpiece tournament.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid and Rahmat Shah bowled 34 of the 50 overs and captured five of the eight Indian wickets to fall at a total cost of 119 runs. Before Saturday’s match at the Hampshire Bowl, not a single Indian wicket had fallen to spin during the tournament.

A crowd, dominated by Indian supporters, many of whom had packed the morning trains from London, were reduced to silence for long periods of their team’s innings by the subtleties of the Afghani slow bowlers backed by their fielders with the exception of one missed run out attempt.

Afghanistan revealed their strategy by entrusting the opening over to Mujeeb with his mixture of finger and wrist spin. He responded by bowling Rohit Sharma for one off the second ball of his third over with a leg-break which drifted into the batsman’s pads. Sharma followed the ball but was then beaten completely when it spun sharply off the pitch across the batsman’s body to hit the off stump.

After bowling six overs for 18 runs, including just one boundary, Mujeeb was replaced by the floaty off-spin of Nabi, who was to prove equally effective.

Nabi frustrated KL Rahul, who stretched forward to play an ill-judged reverse sweep which resulted in a simple catch at short third man, and conceded only 17 runs from his first five overs.

Captain Gulbadin Naib waited until the 19th over before introducing his Rashid.

Mindful of Rashid’s ordeal at Old Trafford, India captain Virat Kohli responded by stretching forward to lash the leg-spinner’s first ball past long-off to the boundary. But Rashid, although he again appeared to be bowling too fast and too flat as he had in the opening matches, maintained his composure and his opening five-over spell cost an acceptable 26 runs.

Rahmat was then thrown the ball and the leg-spinning all-rounder responded by dismissing Vijay Shankar lbw in an initial three-over spell. Nabi returned to capture the prized wicket of Kohli, the top scorer with 67, who decided to risk cutting the bowler against the spin. The ball bounced higher than he expected and ended up in the hands of point.

MS Dhoni, India’s renowned finisher, was unable to force the pace as he struggled to come to terms with the pitch, and was stumped for the second time only in one-day internationals when he shuffled down the pitch after Rashid returned for a third spell.

Afghanistan finished with medium pace at both ends but, with the bowlers shrewdly taking the pace off the ball, the Indian batsmen were unable to take advantage and the team’s total for 224/8 was their lowest since 2010.

ICC MEDIA RELEASE

Virat Kohli admitted India had started to doubt themselves in the half-way stage of Afghanistan's chase of 225 in Southampton on Saturday. Ultimately, Mohammed Shami's hat-trick and Jasprit Bumrah's double wicket blow helped India record their 4th win of the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Virat Kohli top-scored with 67 as India posted a modest 224 for 8 off their 50 overs. However, Afghanistan gave India a real scare before Bumrah struck twice in the 29th over to peg them back.

And then Mohammad Nabi played a heroic knock. With 16 needed off the final over, Nabi hit a boundary before Shami removed Nabi, Aftab Alam and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman off 3 successive balls to win it for India.

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Virat Kohli said this was a memorable win.

"This is right up there. You win the toss, and you decide to bat and then you see the wicket slow down. You think 260 or 270 would be a good total," Kohli said. "At the half-way stage, we had our doubts in our minds, but we also had self-belief in the change rooms."

Virat Kohli said he realised the pitch was not the kind where batsmen could play cross-batted shots and felt horizontal shots cost Indian batsmen on the slow surface.

"As soon as I went in, I understood the pace of the pitch. Cross-batted shots aren't on, and a lot of horizontal bat shots cost us on this pitch.

"You can't take the game away from the opposition. You have to knock the ball around, and with three quality wrist-spinners, it was always difficult," Kohli said.
