All-Round India A Take Opening-Day Honours Against Bangladesh A

The pace-spin combo of Navdeep Saini and Saurabh Kumar impressed the most as India A grabbed the opening-day honours after a commanding performance against Bangladesh A in the first unofficial Test, in Cox's Bazar on Tuesday. Opting to field after winning the toss, Saini (3/21), Saurabh (4/23) and Mukesh Kumar (2/25) helped India A bundle out their opponents for a paltry 112 in only 45 overs. In reply, the visitors finished strongly at 120 for no loss to go ahead by eight runs by the time stumps were drawn.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and India A skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran were looking good at 61 and 53, respectively, when play ended on the first day.

After Saini and Mukesh picked up five of the top six with just 63 runs on the board, the hosts recovered somewhat to cross three figures owing to Mosaddek Hossain's 63.

Hossain struck six fours and three sixes after Bangladesh were reeling at 26 for five one stage.

However, the problem with the home team was that it's batters also struggled against spin, with left-arm spinner Saurabh running through the lower-order to finish with excellent figures.

The 29-year-old Saurabh's performance assumes significance as he could be drafted into the Indian Test team for the upcoming two-match series in Bangladesh if star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is ruled out.

When their time to bat came, India A were served well by the duo of young Jaiswal and Easwaran as the pair not only added 120 runs but also scored them at a good rate.

While Jaiswal struck eight fours in his 106-ball knock, Easwaran found the fence six times while facing 111 deliveries at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium.

Even as veteran Easwaran led from the front, Jaiswal will resume his quest to bring up a sixth hundred in only his eighth first-class match and consolidate the visitors' position in the opener.

Earlier in the day, Delhi pacer Saini struck the first blow when he bowled Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who was beaten by late swing.

Mukesh had the other opener, Zakir Hasan caught behind before disturning Mominul Haque's stumps.

Saini then had Najmul Hossain Shanto caught at third slip, before skipper Mohammad Mithun went for a wide one to leave Bangladesh A tottering at 26 for five.

Mosaddek sought to revive the innings but there was no support at the other end.

However, the Indian openers quickly managed to get the measure of the Bangladesh bowling attack, as the likes of Khaled Ahmed, Rejaur Rahman Raja and Taijul Islam failed to either get a breakthrough or contain.

Bangladesh A batters gave a far better account of themselves on an eased track as they reached 172 for one in their second innings after India A declared at an imposing 465 for five on the third day of the first unofficial 'Test', in Cox Bazar on Thursday. With Abhimanyu Easwaran and Yashasvi Jaiswal's twin hundreds headlining the second day's play, India batted an hour on the third day with third choice red-ball keeper Upendra Yadav (71 not out, 122 balls) completing his half-century before the declaration came into effect.

Having conceded a mammoth first innings lead of 353 runs, Bangladesh A players did show a lot of commitment in the second innings as Zakir Hasan (81 batting) and Test star Najmul Hossain Shanto (56 batting, 124 balls) added 101 runs for the unbroken second wicket stand.

This was after Zakir and Mamhmudul Hasan Joy (21, 88 balls) added 71 for the opening stand and constructed a platform for consolidation.

For India, the only successful bowler during their 63 overs of vigil on the day was left-arm orthodox Saurabh Kumar (1/45 in 18 overs).

Saurabh got his fifth wicket of the match by having Joy caught by Jayant Yadav after nearly two wicket-less hours.

Both Saurabh and off-spinner Jayant (0/55 in 18 overs) lacked bite in the second essay and a lot has got to do with the pitch easing out considerably.

The Indian bowlers had made the most out of the moisture available on opening morning and since then, the track at the Sheikh Kamal International Stadium has been a batting paradise.

Until Indian senior team gets rid of its seniors, they will struggle to win consistently. The white ball team has not changed for India in quite some time. Since 2013, the batting main stays have been Dhawan, Rohit and Kohli. This is 2022 and they are still the main batsmen. No grooming of youngsters who can be able replacements.

Rohit, Dhawan and Kohli for the most part are too slow for modern day white ball cricket. They can win the odd match and look like heroes. But in the long run, they lose more than they win.

Gill, Shaw, SKY, Patidar, Abshishek, Jaiswal etc must be fast tracked and given opportunities to prove themselves. Playing old has been players is pointless as we have seen many times what they can do and what their peak is. But selectors and BCCI does not have the guts to put the big names on the chopping block.

A tours are meaningless if they players do not get chances in the main team.

Even in the A team Pujara is not exactly standing out.youngsters are comfortably outbatting him. Last time Jaiswal and Eswaran made 100s.Against Eswaran. Indian main team is capable of losing to most of the domestic sides on a track like this.
