Kolkata: India and Bangladesh are moving towards a visaless regime as practised between France and Germany and many European nations, Bangladesh high commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali said on Tuesday at the deputy high commission during the concluding programme of Vijay Diwas.
The septuagenarian diplomat said the two nations were working on a World Bank project to execute smooth movement of Indo-Bangla citizens without passport based on the Indian Aadhaar card numbers and the Bangladesh national registry.

Ali, however, is apprehensive that as the system will take time to be implemented, he might not see it in his lifetime. "It can take up to 10 years for implementing this system. Moreover, the Indian Aadhaar card has no mention of citizenship, it is basically a biometric card. A lot of changes are needed to materialise this. A committee has been set up to execute it."

Ali said he thought up the plan while serving as ambassador in France. "It is no more a dream. Travel without visa is going to be a reality and so there will be no requirement of passport. People will be able to move without visa and efforts are on for this," he said and added that diplomats and officials are now able to travel without visa.

"Soon, citizens over 65 will be able to move without visa and will immediately be getting a visa for five years. We are concerned with patients and they will get free en-try. Minor children, too, will get that advantage soon."

Bangladesh minister for road transport and bridges Obaidul Quader, who is also general secretary of the ruling Awami League, said at the event that after the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975, his name was prohibited at Vijay Diwas celebrations for the next 21 years. "India and Bangladesh have faced terrorism and fundamentalism problems, so we need to fight it," he added.

Quader, who underwent training in Dehradun to participate in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, said the bilateral relationship was now at its best, so he wanted a solution to the Teesta water-sharing issue. "We want a practical and logical solution to the water-sharing issue. We hope Mamata didi will take a positive stand."

Quader will call on Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee along with an Awami League delegation. He requested Bengal PHE and panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee, who was present at the programme, to coax the CM on the Teesta issue.

Oh dear. Hope the Aadhar Card printing infrastructure keeps up to meet the increased demand. CricketCartoons

India and Bangladesh are both third world countries and friendly towards each other, so makes sense to do away with visa, which was of no use anyways. Indians without even a passport are able to travel to Bangladesh by bribing at the border.

I don't think the European visas had any restrictions on over 65's/patients only. But inshallah, this restriction will be followed by free travel so once again proud Bengal can be a state united.

Not sure about Bangladeshis but I don't think indians would object to a United Bengal under the republic of India.

India and Bangladesh though ok allies are not like France and Germany or Us and Canada. The government needs to take a step back and analyze whether they really want to be doing this...

Why? Now you can go visit your relatives in Bangladesh unhindered and with ease.

Some Indians hold the delusion that India is a first world country and others are lining up to get an entry. But in reality it is the religion of Bangladeshis, as you won't hear them complaining about the Nepalese staying in India. Moreover, the Bengali Muslims who get branded as Bangladeshis are actually from West Bengal and are Indians.

They live in UK now, have been since late 70s and they are my fathers cousins so not very close either. I am a Indian and my city and state has been devastated by influx of bangladeshis since 70s, what was once infrastructually one of the best cities in soth asia has been devastated by huge influx of bangladeshis.Assam has been worse.

The govt needs to stop immigration from BD rather than giving them more access.

It's true in the context of India - Bangladesh. Bangladeshis are literally dying trying to cross the border.

Bangladeshis of whatever religion should stay in Bangladesh and not India. The number of illegal Bangladeshis in India, even the most conservative estimate says its in millions, suggest that Bangladeshis indeed are lining up to enter India.Google can help you.

That may be true for Sri Lankan Tamils in India. As for Bangladesh, there are many Indians working there, and Bangladesh is the 5th largest provider of remittance to India.

You can now claim to be an Indian, but once your forefathers were just as proud of a state called Bengal, the whole of the State, not the mutilated stump divided in two by religion and supervised by the departing British rulers.

I need not claim to be Indian, i am one.My family is Indian since the day Republic of India was formed. Before that they were subjects of British India.

None of them have anything to do with a country called Bangladesh.

You quoted me twice, so I had to read your posts. I agree illegal immigration must be curbed. Otherwise I welcome more legal immigration from Bangladesh, and also to Bangladesh.

The Brits have often been accused of using divide and rule as a conquering tactic, and your answer merely proves it's efficiency and success. You are welcome.

Fence is there to prevent illegal Bangladeshis fom entering India. Don't think it would be required if Bangladesh becomes a part of India.

The first sentence is a direct contradiction of the second. Also if you read your compatriots responses, you might see why that fence isn't coming down any time soon.

Legal immigration is a different thing. But unless illegal immigration is curbed it will only add to the problem.

PS: I once had you on ignore list.It didnt solve the problem.

Full marks for that one, genius. Bangladesh and India share a fairly porous land border which inevitably leads to floods of refugees since the 1970s. Sri Lanka and India on the other hand, are separated by an open ocean. If you were Sri Lankan, you wouldn't have been able to make the crossing as easily. Certainly there are no everyday shootings at the scene.

If you were Sri Lankan, you would do okay staying put in Lanka itself, but that is a debate for another thread.

Good for India Bangladesh relations. The two countries are natural allies.

No, it isnt.

And I have gone through the responses of my countrymen, and nowhere from their responses can I deduce that they wouldnt welcome bangladesh joining the republic of India.

They are as much natural 'allies' as Pakistan and Afghanistan. Make of that what you will.
