"India are powerful enough to win the World Cup without having to play Pakistan" : Harbhajan Singh

NEW DELHI: Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh doesn't want India to play Pakistan in the upcoming ODI World Cup in the aftermath of the ghastly terror attack in Pulwama.

Harbhajan said India are strong enough to win the World Cup even if they decide to forfeit the match against Pakistan in Manchester on June 16.

Harbhajan's statement came after the terror attack in Pulwama killed 40 personnel CRPF personnel. Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad had claimed responsibility for the ghastly act.

"India should not play Pakistan in the World Cup. India are powerful enough to win the World Cup without having to play Pakistan," Harbhajan Singh told 'Aaj Tak' news channel.

"This is a difficult time. The attack that has happened, it was unbelievable and it's very wrong. Strict action will surely be taken by the government. When it comes to cricket, I don't think we should have any relations with them otherwise they will keep treating us like this," he added.

Harbhajan said India doesn't need to revive any sort of sporting ties with Pakistan as a mark of respect for the armed forces.

"I don't think India should play the World Cup match against Pakistan. Country comes first and we are all standing behind our country. Cricket or hockey or sports, it should be kept aside because this is a huge thing and repeatedly our soldiers are killed. "We should stand with our country. Cricket or hockey or any sport, we don't need to play with them," he said.

"We should not keep any kind of ties with Pakistan: we are powerful enough to feed the world on our own. Cricket, sports is not as important. We stand with every member of the defence force. Their sacrifices should not go to waste," Harbhajan said.

Good please forfeit it.We will be more than happy and then let come the semifinals vs ?India who knows.
 
Then make it official and announce to the World that you won't play us in ICC events. All this talk no action..
 
i'd predicted it few days back. If we don't call off the tie they will.

India is a reactionary nation. If BCCI still tries to get on with it for ICC, the indian mediapersons, channels, advertisers can also react or boycott making the tie a financial loss for ICC

What if they have to face pakistan in the semis or the final?
Will they still forfeit the match?
 
Why doesn't the bcci just announce it??

They're just talking that's it. I don't think they have the guts to walk the walk.
 
What I found funny was, in the same interview they asked him would India forfeit a semi final or final match
And his reply was “I’m sure the government would have resolved the issue by then”

Makes the whole situation even more farcical

Trynna act like they're tough and all that.

If they really have a problem with pakistan then they should forfeit playing pakistan if they vs them in the semis or the final.
I'd love to see if they would actually do it or not.
 
Country comes first. Cricket, hockey, sports should be kept aside... India should not play Pakistan in the WC. Ok.

Lets hope they do forfeit because when they have to play them again in finals or semis they will be forced to forfeit again.

The point he's trying to make is that's not going to happen. I would be very surprised even Pakistan even make the semis, even if they get a free win against India in the group stages.

Two nations, full of emotional people. On another thread, Pakistani fans are asking for the same thing.

At the end of the day, y'all will play us, we will play your team. Bunch of noise from both side for no reason.

Please do this bcci.i know pcb will lose some revenue of not playing with india in icc events but let the indian broadcaster ,icc and other cricket board feel the chin music of indian board of losing fair amount of money.

India comes from a citizen of a country which ranks 1 on poverty index.

This became a norm for Indian Govt/forces to blame Pakistan for every mishap just to hide their own negligence/failures
 
That would be great. And Pakistan’s next aim would be to reach the Finals. So if India also make the Finals the cup is ours.

Both this joker and Gambhir kept playing against Pakistan, why didn’t they boycott the matches on personal level? Well then the careers could have been ruined, why didn’t country come first?

Still remember his «shouda» face when Afridi lofted him for 4 sixes on trot.

Who cares about world cup...lol. Not playing Pakistan is the key here....if it means 1st round exit...couldnt care less.

Depends. If it is knockout match, semi or final then am sure patriotism can go to hell :)))

2 things:

1) Pakistan wont go beyond 1st round with the team they have.

2) Even if they somehow qualifies for next round and find India as opponent, we have no issues to boycott.

At least he is being consistent with the rabbid anti-Pakistan hysteria swelling in the country.

India has been boycotting Pakistan every other way bybanning actors to not playing cricket even in neutral venues so apply this same logic to the World Cup as well.

It’s just an ironic the explosives were brought in india, the attacker was an Indian Kashmiri and the attack happened in India but let’s blame not just the whole country but make them pay for it by not playing a cricket. Ok whatever.
 
Guys I think we all need to calm down here. I understand with all the political turmoil that emotions are running high, but this is a cricket forum. If you all really want to have heated conversations I believe there is a politics discussion section, this section is for cricket only. I understand the original post was related to cricket but with all this "go to an Indian forum" and whatnot, please stop, we should be open minded and welcome posters from other countries. Also keep in mind to not use foul language please, I get a feeling someone might cross the line.

Good post.

Everyone is welcome to post here, but pure hypocricy should be adressed. When you have posters who support attacking pakistani military (read Pakistan), they support cutting off all ties with Pakistan and all that stuff, but at same time they are enjoying passing their time on a pakistani cricket forum.

If they want to continue with double standard and acknowledge it, they are free to do whatever they want to do like all other of us.
 
Surprising stuff, given this is the same guy who said India's stance (of playing Pakistan in ICC events but refusing to play a bilateral series) as illogical and inconsistent.
 
Indians cannot even boycott Pakistani forums / Pakistani social media pages and they expect their cricket team to boycott us. Do what's in your hand first and then preach.

This is the crux of the matter. I have no problem with India refusing to play Pakistan, but if it's a matter of principle, winning the world cup shouldn't even be a factor. Just withdraw from the tournament if necessary, then perhaps Pakistan might even go on to become worthy champions. :)

Oh no, if India forfeit the game and win the tournament, it will reflect really badly on Pakistan as well as other teams.

For the sake of world cricket, Pakistan should also forfeit one game. I vote NZ. They have got our number.

Every team to fortfeit against at least one team to balance out the whole scenario.

We can do two, we have bigger hearts.
 
Indians are all about jingoistic posturing but when the WC will come around you can bet your house they will play Pakistan. If there was actually some consistency to their policy of boycotting Pakistan they would have done it in the last 3 Asia Cups, Champions Trophies and World Cups.
 
They cant feed 100s of millions of their own countrymen forget feeding the world

I don’t understand why Pakistan players are being punished for others crime. If India don’t want to play the game that is up to them. But all these statements as India will play the game.
 
If the two teams could play during the Kargil War in 1999, they'll play here.

Either India or Pakistan need stamp down hard and make a political move during this WC.

It will send shock waves throughout the ICC and even throughout the sporting community that a country is willing to sacrifice 4 years of preparation and the entire world cup campaign to stand by its political beliefs and its governments policy.

And I would rather it be Pakistan than India...

Just to also point out, the Indians lost 100's of Soldiers in Kargil during the 1999 World Cup, and that didn't stop them playing us.

Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has urged Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take immediate steps that can help put an end to violence perpetrated in India from across the border.

"I can only tell Imran Khan that he should take steps so that these issues can be addressed and how they can be addressed, he knows best," Harbhajan told India Today.

"We are too small to understand how these issues can be tackled politically. But there should be an end to this. An end after which not a single soldier of ours has to lose his life. Because every soldier is someone's son or brother and only that family can understand the pain," he added.

40 CRPF jawans lost their lives in Pulwama terror attack on February 14 when a militant belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammad, a Pakistan based terror outfit rammed an explosive-laden SUV on a bus carrying CRPF personnel.

Harbhajan is one of the many cricket voices in India coming to terms with the reality that little has changed in Pakistan's stance vis-a-vis terrorism even with former cricket captain Imran Khan at the helm.

In a video message on Tuesday, Imran said, "India has blamed Pakistan without any proof. Pakistan has nothing to gain from this attack. Pakistan is moving towards peace and stability."

Harbhajan also voiced his opinion calling for India to boycott the World Cup match against Pakistan, this year, if need be, to register protest.

"India should not play Pakistan in the World Cup. India are powerful enough to win the World Cup without having to play Pakistan," Harbhajan Singh told Aaj Tak.

This is the result of unnecessary nationalism human lives matter wherever an attack happens but in India only their own are mourned with direct blame on Pakistan without any proof when worse attacks are happening in Pakistan and other countries.
What will they get from forfeiting a match and isolating a country in general is that the solution to peace and love in the future,
