India's government on Thursday approved the purchase of 33 Russian fighter jets and upgrades to another 59 planes, acting to beef up its air force at a time when the military is locked in a border stand-off with China.

The approval for 21 MiG-29 planes and a dozen Su-30 jets will together cost 181.48 billion rupees ($2.43 billion), the defence ministry said.

The purchase, along with the upgrade of 59 other MiG-29s, was an attempt to address the “long-felt need of the Air Force to increase its fighter squadrons”, it added.

Tensions between India and China are at their highest in years following a clash last month in a disputed stretch of the border in the western Himalayas in which India lost 20 soldiers.

The two countries, which fought a brief border war in 1962, have since the recent clash moved additional forces and military equipment into key sections of the 3,488-kilometre Line of Actual Control — the ceasefire line separating the two forces.

The green light for the Russian planes followed a visit to Moscow last month by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh where he urged his hosts to speed up deliveries, officials said.

More than half of India's military hardware is still of Russian origin even though over the last decade India has turned to the United States and Israel for high-tech arms transfers. Major arms manufacturers are wooing the country as it replaces obsolete Soviet-era weapons.

The Defence Ministry also approved the purchase of air-to-air missiles developed indigenously that it said will add to the strike capability of the air force.

Rahul Bedi, a defence analyst, said the acquisition of the Russian aircraft will boost the air force's depleted fighter squadron numbers, which have dropped from an approved total of 42 to 28. One squadron comprises 18 aircraft.

He said the 21 MiG-29s will be second-hand planes that will be updated in Russia, while the 12 Su-30MKIs will be built under licence by India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

I can assume this is only done so Russia supports us in UN and other foreign policy related stuff.

Lots of money to spend for more death and destruction.

Looking at the migrants in India one would think it was a 3rd world country!

India is a combo... a first world country (the tech hubs of Bangalore, Hyderabad and Mumbai), a second world (the 2nd tier cities) and third world (migrant labor).

It would be nice if India and Pakistan spent their money on making the lives of their poor better instead of buying defense equipment.

Corporate centers of Amazon,Google,FB etc, big corporate buildings,Clubs,Bars, Designer stores etc etc etc. Obviously it is not going to be easy for you to understand.

As Napa said of course there is a lot of poverty and there are some cities still retaining that earthy Indian atmosphere probably close to a lot of Pakistan cities.

However there are a lot of places that look no different from an international city either. Just like USA or UK have some areas ,which look no worse than a third world country.

I empathise with you for living in a bubble but it is what it is.

You seem to have comprehension issues. The fact that these corporates have offices because there are actually Indians working here or these corporate giants believe in the the bright young Indian students from top level Indian universities. There are clubs, bars, restaurants and upscale shopping because there are people who can actually afford to buy them and have the purchasing power. I am not talking about Cricketers, film stars or the Indian billionaires who probably can buy Pakistan 10 times over. I am talking about people who were once Middle class folk have had their lifestyle change for the good due to this.

There is a reason India is in the G20. India is still a developing country because it does have the 3rd world element to it with the poverty. No one disagrees there. However it still has a significant place in world economy or diplomacy because it has a lot of things going for it as well.

That's the problem with some of you guys and I mean this genuinely, every time there is a story of progress, you guys point to toilet problems and slums. Sure, they exist.

However the point you seem to be missing is while those problems are common to Pakistan as well, there are lot of areas where there is not even a comparison anymore. May be if there were these corporations etc in Pakistan may be you wouldn't have young men turn into Jihadis. Sometimes, take a breath and think rationally. There is a lot of good things Pakistan can learn from India if you see it from a neutral perspective.

Guys look at first world country Mumbai

Dharavi_India.jpg

America/Europe is a first world country, that have there own private brands and corporations, when these are outsourced to third world countries through manufactering, data entry, call centers etc. you are a developing country, providing services or as some would say slave labor to first world countries.

China has moved ahead by creating its own brands (huawei, oppo, xiomi, wechat, tiktok, tencent etc.) therefore its part first world (eastern china), developing (middle/eastern china) and third world (western china)

India has light years to go before they create global brands, right now they are just providing services to firstworld countries, therefore its a third world country with a small segment in the developing world.

Yesterday, it was we are in a new world , today we are a first world country :)))

Its been a while since I watched Bollywood but please tell me the name of the movie which inspired this? :)

These huge companies are using India as a base but also for cheaper labour.

Purchasing these fighters is a waste of time, as was the S400. Russia knows this so quickly got the deals done. China, Russia and Pak all have missiles which can evade S400 with little trouble. Jets can be useful in defence but Indians cant fly planes.

this.

So much money spent

India should develop their economy and prioritize eradicating poverty (same applies to Pakistan).

The posh and affluent areas are in every country, these are no indication of prosperity. Even kenya and Nigeria will ve them.

Despite all your claims of being supa powa, India overall is a poor and backwards, 3rd world country thats on 129th place on Human Development Index (yes lack of toilets matter).

The reason why its in G20 is because of its 1.2 bio population. The reason why those large corporations have offices in India is due to cheap labour doing donkey work. All of this has been discussed many times over and over again. No body here is claiming Pakistan to be a first world country, so no point in what aboutism. We are not disillusioned by where we stand in the world nor we are chest thumping on internet forums.

Learn some humility.

there is nothing special about these purchases. Second hand MIG-29's To eliminate some older planes and attrition. Same with the SU30's. It is a cheap efficient way to make up for some basic shortcomings.

its actually smarter than splurging on high ticket items that they have been trying to do over the years.
