England lead is huge at the moment so lots of work ahead for India - this could still turn out to be an epic game.

Grey and overcast. The ball will swing for Anderson and Curran today, and Robbo gets occasional inswing too.

WARNE thinks Root's run-scoring feats are ramping up the pressure on Virat Kohli...

"I think when you see the opposition captain, who is also one of the best players in the world, getting all of these runs, everybody is suddenly talking about Virat and his technique.

"I reckon the reason why his technique is changing is that he’s so eager to make some runs that he is too keen to hit the ball, rather than being calm and patient.

"Root making runs is adding to that pressure on Kohli."

The game would be over by today only. Unfortunate because I hoped that I would be able to catch live action of full day on Day 4 and 5 during the weekends.

For sure, India will bat better than first day today but will most likely be bundled around 250.

Kohli was right to bat. Had his openers got through the first hour, the Sun would have shone and the wicket got easier for batting, and England would have been chasing leather and out of the series.

Overton at no 8 instead of curran in the first 2 tests could have proven to be more beneficial for England

WICKET! Robinson b Bumrah 0 - England 432 all out

Anderson stays on the pitch, raring to go with the ball….

What can the rain do? Wipe some time out for India OR Wipe them out soon with pitch getting spiced up again?

England did big favour to us finishing their innings quickly.. India should try to bat 2 whole days (😛), let them bowl to death.. Runs didn't matter..

Absolutely.. bat as long as possible.. put a price on your wicket .. if you get out to an unplayable delivery then it is ok ..

I don't think India has any chance to win this game, so they should have let England's tail bat there longer, and wasted some time.

Over 13 – India 18-0 (Rohit 12, Rahul 6) - TRAIL BY 336

Excellent and solid start by India openers - once 50/0 comes on the board then the game's direction will start to change

Another poor innings from Rahul comes to end. He looks to have reverted to his type.

Gill or Agarwal or Shaw might get a call back! And the cycle might repeat...

Wow, worldie from Bairstow going to his weak side.

Good England attack this, despite missing three or four front line quicks.

Nine to go.

Overton has looked fantastic. Tall guy pitching it up and bowling a perfect line

India will do well to make England bat again.

The pitch is flatter but there’s still enough movement for the quicks if you are consistent on a length and should be some turn for Ali as well.

Overall I expect England to wrap this up by tomorrow tea time at the latest.

Ya amazing that one cheap dismissal and he again looks full of self-doubts
The fault is entirely his. He went for the glory shot within the first over of this test without being set and that too off Jimmy who is a champion in these conditions and paid the price.

That's why despite all his talent he has such a poor record in test cricket.

Our tail starts now with the fall of Rahul.

Tail? It seems you are losing confidence in Pant now. And what is KL Rahul doing now? Plays one good inning and follows it with 4-5 average innings. Exactly what I said about him. :inti

Mentally a big wicket that.

England will have their tails up now.

Going to be tough this for India.

You overrate our batting way too much.

This would be done today itself.

No I think some of the Indian players could score big once they are set on this wicket and the ball gets softer. Rohit, Kohli and even Pant are due a score and have the ability.

However I just think the scorecard pressure is too much and if you defend too much you will get out eventually.

You just can’t recover getting bundled out under 100 in Test cricket, it happens very very rarely to get out of such circumstances.

They can do something like send Jadeja now and ask him to play like "specialist" batsman! There is nothing to lose. (We have 99.99% or even 100.01% chance of losing this game!)

Whatever stability Jadeja can give later in the innings, he can give it now itself. At least it will change the direction of the game a little bit. Left hand/Right hand combo, and then it gives some respite for Pujara, Kohli, Rahane (and even Pant) as they bat bit later in the order. Also we will find out how good Jadeja is as a batsman!

Good catch by bairstow, fab bowling by overton...
End of the day their conditions, and they know best how to bowl...
But did we whinge at at all?
and look at the traffic on this forum.....everyone and their aunt crawling out of the wood work to put the boot in...
end of the day, we are going to be thumped fair and square....and fair play to Eng, they deserve this...
All i want is our guys to show some steel...to make them sweat for each wicket...we have two back to back tests coming up....i hope we donot capitulate today itself....
End of the day - we're better than 78 ao and giving the oppoistion 430 whatever .....
and jimmy -great bowler -champ and legend that he is ....pathetic sour puss looser he is - cant take it when it gets too hot....at least i know who my kids shouldnt follow ...and to be honest...vk is in the same boat...so stop the shooting ....

They may have the ability but most certainly not the form on their side. Mentally they look shot.

Except for Rahane in Lord's test last innings, none of our batsmen bar Rahul & Rohit have hit even a 50 on this English tour.

Likes of Pujara, Kohli, Rahane were failures even during our home series against England.

Yeah...credit where its due...Eng have played like a dream to be where they are in all departments - no doubting that....we were pathetic - no doubting that either - at least in this test....
End of the day....also their conditions, pitches etc....they should be monster here...and considering this...we still have competed - at least in first two tests....and minus the serial whinging....
we'll be back m8....

NASSER HUSSAIN is full of praise for England's seam attack, who were relentless in that morning session...

"Every time India have batted on it, the ball has zipped around, swung. It has done plenty. At periods yesterday when Root and Malan were batting, it looked an absolute road, so credit to England's bowlers who are missing Stokes, Archer, Wood and Broad, and they're still able to bowl them out for 78, and then second time around when it's supposed to be flatter, get so much out of this surface."

Ordinarily I would have commented on that ratio but now I am more than certain that we will lose

Lol why? Further demolishing bowlers? Agree Indian win almost impossible but I want to see their bowlers bowl at least 140 overs..

I am in no illusions about this side. The batting is awful, but then there are no good batting lines in the world any more except NZ.

However there is bowling strength in depth, unusually for England.

Pujara batting at S/R of 107 is indeed a real treat to watch for the fans who grew up watching Viv Richards in 70s and 80s.

Pujara would have been a hero in 1st test scoring a brisk 100 chasing on the last day! He was on his way! Rain spoiled it!

He has become a second inning specialist these days. Let's see if he can score a big one or gets out cheaply.

India at 73/1, close to overtaking their 1st innings score. the lead is at 281 and that number raises fond memories of a magical turnaround

Hmmm...good honest summary i guess.....tb h.....i am impressed with the way your guys have gone about single mindedly steel trap towards their objective....and yes-the bowling depths and stocks are impressive for you guys....our batting is regressive and simply put we donot have any younsters knocking the doors down...save for gill....i know indian posters here will mention shaw...but imho - i donot havehopes on him.....
all said and done...hey -is'nt headingley -the brisbane of 2002-and nasser hussain's dilema at the toss....
i thot this pitch was one spicy green and juicy.. real bowling shooto out... but has'nt proved so...you guys got 400+...
Hoping for our guys to make eng stretch and sweat for each wicket.....
good contest in store....or maybe the indian in me is wishful thinking...

Yup. England looking more and more frustrated. Would be lovely to see them when we wipe out the lead :asad1

Rohit is again trapped in front by Robinson, but England run out of time to review, and replays show that the ball was hitting, with three reds lighting up.

This could turn into a very interesting game.

India showing good resilience as the wicket is a lot easier to play now. Lots n lots of time left.

If they could bat till tea tomorrow they might as well have a 100+ lead.

What is the reason for this one mad session killing India? (36 in Australia & first innings of this test match) Is it lack of practice matches? (9 days gap before this test match, they could have easily had a 3 day practice match against local team) These are the things India should insist when touring...

all water down the bridge now that they did'nt take the review....tough....

Its super cloudy, overcast....floodlights are on, the manic crowd's on his back, we are facing a massive deficit....portents are right for jim grumpy..,.c'mon lads....lets get them sweating...some pepper up jim snooty's nose...cmon guys...

Will still loose as chasing 100 on last day ain't so difficult. Some one has to play a 270- 300 run inning with others contributing 30s 50s ....and this for just a draw draw. Innings like those happen once in a blue moon.

The probability on Indian win was eliminated on first day at 78 all out.

Is that how champions think nowadays?

Those 'Days' dont come too often m8.....and whilst at it...we still were the other finalists in the WTC .....and lost out on the SIXTH day in unfavourable conditions......and will be hard placed to match the 0-12 consecutive...
nuff said....

Conditions are pretty hard against high class bowling. These two are playing masterfully. Should a wicket fall, you'll see how hard it suddenly gets.

But I agree with your other points about the test being very very interesting. To me it is potentially an ATG one. I've been getting those feels :afridi

This is a flat wicket and it's the overheads conditions that are helping the bowlers along with their own skill levels. Ind could be in a mammoth total if they bat well

This whole taking till the last second to take the review is getting a little ridiculous now. Serves Root right. Seen Kohli do this on almost all reviews he goes for. Are they that indecisive every single time?

Well played Rohit always makes batting look easy, match will be over once rohit gets out though.

Easy to say these things when you are sitting in front of your TV set. :inti

These are just soft runs from Pujara. The game is already lost. We will need someone to bat whole day tomorrow.

I think in Kolkata test, Laxman and Dravid batted whole day on Day 4. So, only that kind of effort can save us. Not gonna happen.
