India's political opposition have criticised rumoured plans for the national cricket team to wear orange in a forthcoming World Cup fixture.

Critics say a saffron-coloured reserve kit represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of PM Narendra Modi.

The Indian cricket team have to ditch their usual blue for their clash against England on 30 June.

Under new International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, opposing sides must provide two kits for televised events.

An ICC source told Indian outlet ANI they had provided colour options to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, who chose an option that looked best for them.

But politicians from India's Congress Party and the Samajwadi Party (SP) have objected to the rumoured kit change.

"Modi wants to saffronise the entire country," Abu Asim Azmi, from the SP said - referencing a term used to describe a Hindu nationalist drive to dominate the country's heritage and culture.

"A Muslim was the one who designed the Indian tricolour. There are other colours in the tricolour, why choose only orange?"

Photographs and mock-ups of the rumoured kit, with different amounts of orange on them, have been circulating on social media.

India's bowling coach, Bharat Arun, has urged fans to focus on the fixtures themselves instead of the jersey.

''We are focusing on the game and not aware of the colour we are getting," he said when probed on the row. "We bleed blue, right. Blue is going to be predominantly the colour and that's it."

This is not the first time recently that India's kits have sparked controversy.

Earlier this month cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni was asked by the ICC to remove a military insignia from his wicket-keeping gloves.

The logo, which depicts a commando dagger, is known as the Balidaan (sacrifice) badge in India. The ICC said the gloves, which he wore for India's opening World Cup match, flouted regulations.

I saw a picture of kohli in this orange one it looks so sick they should you actually use that people are stupid who associate colours with religion or parties that makes no sense lol that Kit is lit

Non story, saffron is part of the national flag plus hockey and other teams from India have worn saffron in the past.

This isn't exactly Hindutva orange. I was expecting all orange. This is not to different from India's dark blue and orange kit from 2009-10

The reason for that is jersey has to sell..but can't believe they agreed to color it 75% saffron

This is the reason the likes of congress and SP are getting plastered in the elections. Raising completely useless issues and seeing Hindutva everywhere.

Saffron is one of the colours of the national flag. Dont see how using it is a problem.

The tricolor has saffron too. That should be changed?

There was already Saffron added to jersey, have the whole jersey behind in Saffron is nonsense, there are childhood memories of blue, dark blue this is absolute nonsense.

Also thats a flag, has Saffron and Green, should we add both here, no one had issues with lines of Saffron which has been there for long, its about turning it completely into Saffron thats an issue.
We could had chosen Dark blue-blue color jersey, like Sharjah 1998 but no.. lol

I'm sorry but Blue is nowhere near Saffron.. how is this color derived, bleed blue etc holds no meaning to the new jersey

This is a complete non issue. Congress and SP need to get a job, or else their demise will continue. They really don't understand that the more they throw up those childish tantrums, the more they distance themselves from people. They can talk about economics, job market, education policy etc but I guess they lack that leadership and intellect in their current crop.

There is nothing wrong in the colour or design of the Jersey. Someone may like it, someone may dislike it. But I don't see any religious or political propaganda here.

Pardon my ignorance but there is no blue on your flag, but there is saffron so having a saffron kit makes more sense than having a blue kit. Saffron is not a very pleasing color to look at, that is a different matter.

The wheel is navy blue

What a non-story this is!!! I thought the complete uniform would be orange. But this is normal.

They will get another phainty in next election. These parties are anti hindu, there isn't a single party in india which is truly secular.

This looks hideous. Should be whole Orange.

India's away colours in Hockey and Football are white iirc. Can't wear white in limited overs cricket sadly.

Useless criticism from the opposition. Just trying to score points. That said this is a garbage rule by ICC. That is one ugly looking jersey. I prefer the navy blue.

I agree what does colour have to do with religion? I find the kit sick it's actually reminds me of the one they wore in 2009 CT. I just wish the back wasn't all orange that would like kind of ugly. But just orange sides actually looks pretty nice.

Orange is a pretty terrible colour for a sports team which is why you rarely see this compared to the more popular colours such as red, blue, green etc.

It's not to my taste but I wont be wearing one.

Not sure if it's Hindutva related so a non-issue.

Legend! Hold my hands up, he wore it and it looked class.

I guess its the saffron orange which imo looks trashy.

yeh the lightish orange looks cheaper, deepish reddish orange looks fire, altho even the deeper orange is really easy to get wrong, like shakhtar or hull look horrible to me

Even the LFC organe kit looked better but I didn't buy the top because such colours remind me of men at work on the streets.:inzi2

Genius marketing scheme from BCCI.

They know how gullible Indian general population is.

Directly and indirectly insert religious nationalism and these shirts will be selling faster than bathrooms in India.

And get any of the Pakistani media or social media talk about it and watch how quick it goes off of the shelves.

BCCI and GOI knows their gullible population well :)

The Ashok Chakra in the centre (white portion) is navy blue in color, a Dharma Chakra with 24 spokes. It is a major symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism.

The orange-blue jersey looks fantastic, I will definitely buy it. Netherlands football jersey has always been a standout, I am glad we will soon have a different combination of colors in cricket, some colours like green, yellow, blue, red are overused and hence boring.

On topic the opposition should shut up and focus on real issues like Bihar deaths, lynchings, hijack of institutions, rapes, corruption, water crisis etc. This is so stupid of them, why don't they do something useful for a change?
