New Delhi: India is expected to overtake Germany to become fourth-largest economy in 2026 and Japan to become third largest in 2034, according a recent report by the UK-based Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR).

It further said India is also set to reach a gross domestic product (GDP) of $5 trillion by 2026, 2 years later than the government's target.

"India has decisively overtaken both France and the UK to become the world's fifth-largest economy in 2019. It is expected to overtake Germany to become fourth largest in 2026 and Japan to become the third largest in 2034," the report, titled 'World Economic League Table 2020', said.

Japan, Germany and India will battle for third position over the next 15 years, according to the CEBR.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's target of taking the economy to $5 trillion by 2024, it said, "India is also set to reach a GDP of $5 trillion by 2026 — 2 years later than the current government target."

But, dark clouds gathering all over the economy are leading many to question the maintainability of the target.

Recently, former Reserve Bank governor C Rangarajan, said that at the current growth rate, reaching the USD 5-trillion GDP target by 2024-25 is "simply out of question".

Noting that Indian data revisions mean that 2019 was the year when the country's economy finally overtook the UK and France, the report said, "But, slow growth during the year has increased pressure for more radical economic reforms."

Despite the rapid ascent of countries such as India and Indonesia, it is striking how little an impact this will have on the US and China's dominant roles in the global economy, said Pablo Shah, senior economist at Cebr.

India, which till recently was hailed as the world's fastest-growing major economy, has seen growth rate decline to a six-year low of 4.5 per cent in the September quarter of 2019-20.

This has largely been attributed to the slowdown in investment that has now broadened into consumption, driven by financial stress among rural households and weak job creation.

The World Economic League Table is an annual calculation by Cebr jointly published by Cebr and Global Construction Perspectives. The base data for 2019 is taken from the IMF World Economic Outlook.

Oh, gotta love this. From a "Superpower in 2020" to "5 trillion dollar economy by 2024" to "overtaking the German economy in 2026". :91:

And they have a mere 82 million people. We have 1400 million. Was that taken into account? Is any Per Capita metric mentioned at all?

I still remember Japan was the second largest economy even in 2000s and now look at China they have passed them and are far ahead of everyone else now including Japan and sitting on second in the list and aiming for being #1 by replacing US

We will talk about it in 2026. As things stand there may not even be an India if Modi has his way seeing all that is going on there.

Hmm..Chest thumping in disguise.

Who cares..As we say in Urdu: chal nikul patli gulli se!

As someone who is not the student of economics and haven’t read this article, I fully endorse it. May India become worlds beshtesht economy ever.

Meh, size means nothing. It'll take over a century or more for India to even match Germany's current per capita income

Only purpose of posting this here is to gloat and boast, glad fellow PP'ers saw through it

:salute

Japan’s economy never recovered after the Kobe earthquake.

Didn't Japan end 2018 as the 3rd largest per GDP?

Something not factually correct about this article...where ever it is from.

The bigger issue is how is all the money India currently produces as its GDP distributed among the health sector? Infrastructure? Religious and race diversity? The job market? And so on.

Oh yeah I had forgotten about this gem... supa powa 2020....

People will be going from all over the world to Shinning India for employment and better chance of life in just a day and a half. Can't wait.... Does supa powa have any work permits for Canadians?

India's nominal GDP is $2.9 trillion , 5th highest economy in the world, Germany is at $3.8 trillion which is 1 more trillion, so I believe it will take more than 10 years from now to reach where Germany is now but let's see how it goes

There's no point of being a multi trillion dollar economy if you're GDP per Capita's going to be barely $2000.

There is a lot of poverty in India not in Germany. So comparing India with Germany is not a wise thing to do.

People of Germany dealt with hitlerism, People of India have adapted and are going through hitlerism.

No amount of money can mask the bigotry which is ultimately downfall for many great economy.

Not for those holding Pakistani passports like yourself. Watch the Incredible India video 2030 above, I guess Pakistan's green part of the flag will come to symbolise envy. :(

Now that India will be such a big supa powa, I'm hoping they also develop a supa heart and let a Pakistan
origin Canadian like me into their developed country so that I can lead a better life than the one I get in Canada.. :inti

It's happening.

Couldn’t make myself watch till end in one go. Still noticed 2 things in the Video:

1. Why are Gor@y bhikari, outside airport begging in an Indian accent?
2. Why are Super power indians, still looking malnourished?

Guess, somethings never change. eh!

This might explain why Indians are fleeing India. The economy must be doing really well! Oh wait, Modi's government were caught lying about India's economic figures with their lungis down.

Another 3 years to go past germany, japan. Hope it happens fast.

Another 20-30 years to challenge China, usa.

Fingers crossed

Sanatan is inevitable.

Bharat is well on its way in becoming the only Omega Power ever in history.
