Parliament just killed India’s ₹3.7B real-money gaming industry.

The new Online Gaming Bill bans cricket fantasy apps and many more online game and betting apps nationwide, leaving only esports and social games with strict KYC.

With 517M gamers and a $100B shadow betting economy, the wild west is over. What comes next is a regulated game of survival.

The Ban of many Big Online Gaming Apps will now trigger Mass layoffs

What is the reason for the ban? Is it because it is basically gambling?
Yup and most of youths are addicted to gambling and lost the well hard money through various platforms.

These fanatsy apps is one the reason why too much T20 cricket happening around the world.

This is just not limited to cricket but many other real money games.

Really couldn’t care less about anything related to India, but neutrally speaking, this is a good first step towards addressing the scourge of sports betting, and eventually, fixing.

But, as w/ any evil addiction, the change has to first come within the target demographic themselves. Otherwise it’ll be like Prohibition in the US and the alcohol ban. Punters will find a way around it.

Sports betting and fixing are two different things. People tend to think both are same.

Few years back, I believed that people should have the choice when it came drinking alcahol and betting and all. But than I saw people close to me lose money in this stuff and see the impact it has.

While this industry makes alot of money, they are not only amongst the biggest sponsors, but sports data reporting companies biggest clients are these guys. This will impact alot of people in terms of jobs, sponsorship and economy.

However, it is a very good thing. Alot of people destroy their lives by putting bets and throwing away money. Its good for the society

The Indian government allowed these kind of apps as skilled based and banning it now after earning lot of money.

Thousands of people lost everything due to these apps, lot of Indian cricketers endorsed these apps.

Everyone needs money, no value for life.

How has online gambling been made illegal but lotteries are still allowed ?

How has online gambling been made illegal but lotteries are still allowed ?
Lotteries are not allowed in many states .but few states not much with capital investment will take it as easy route.online lotteries also follows the same pattern

Some of these apps were operating at 30% profit margin, minting huge amount of money from the size and scale of these games while the users remained stuck in a zero sum game.

Government wants people to spend this money elsewhere from which the economy at large could benefit rather than few individuals.

What does this do the BCCI sponsorship? The Ind. team has this plastered big on their kits.

I am going to take a wild guess and say, nobody held a gun to their to put up the money. People have to take responsibility for their actions.
I used to be of same opinion aswell. That people have free choice and nobody holds a gun and this and that.

But sometimes, you need someone to protect you as humans and here that is where the govts are required.

Not every is born as a gambling addict. When you have an access and see how easily you doubled the amont of money, greed takes over.

Im saying this based on how gambling apps have also taken over in pakistan, where you can also easily convert the money you made into cash. Alot of people are hooked up on to these things and its bad.

I do see your point about taking responsibility for their actions but I think the Indian government did the right thing. Having known a couple of folks with a gambling addiction, I have become sympathetic toward them. I don’t think of their addiction as “exercising their will or they should know better”, it’s a compulsion and the vulnerable need to be prevented from hurting themselves.

It’s similar to making and distributing drugs (opioids, stimulants, hallucinogens etc.) illegal (or extremely controlled) because they can be so deadly in a very quick time and are so addictive that the body craves it, becomes dependent on it, and demands it - nobody forces people to take drugs but they still do out of craving and compulsion and often do other crimes to get money to fuel their addiction.

In addition, using such platforms for illegal betting will also be severely diminished.

In the US, a couple of states do not allow any casinos at all - I know Utah is one - and many states restrict gambling only to some tribal areas. Additionally, even in the states themselves numerous counties do not allow casinos in their jurisdiction (like mine). They all are trying to prevent people from hurting themselves in more ways than just financially.

Sure the the govt. has a role to some extent. Especially in cases of hard drugs. But the majority of the responsibility lies with the individual. Regardless of their ability/capability to be disciplined.

If I put on my pants and shoes, get my wallet and keys and drive over to get burgers and fries, I cannot blame McDonald's for my fat belly!

Did not know that Utah has no casinos. Most states get around the law by putting them on native reservations. These casinos flourish almost as much as the ones in Vegas. Perhaps that is why traffic is down in Vegas.

Dream11 tells BCCI it will no longer sponsor Indian cricket team; board officially terminates contract

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday officially ended its association with Dream11, with the fantasy sports platform no longer sponsoring the Indian cricket team. The move followed the passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill in both houses of parliament last Thursday. With just a fortnight left for the Asia Cup in the UAE, the Indian team is currently without a title sponsor.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development to ANI, adding that the board will not enter into partnerships with such organisations in the future.

"BCCI and Dream 11 are discontinuing their relationship after the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed. BCCI will ensure not to indulge with any such organisations in future," he said.

Earlier, a media report revealed that Dream11 representatives visited the BCCI office in Mumbai and informed the board CEO about their to no longer sponsor the Indian team. It added that the Indian board is expected to issue a new tender soon.

“(Representatives of) Dream11 visited the BCCI office and informed CEO Hemang Amin that they won’t be able to continue… As a result, they won’t be the team’s sponsors for the Asia Cup. The BCCI will float a new tender soon,” a BCCI official told.

Another official confirmed that the sponsor’s decision to pull out is unlikely to be penalised, owing to a clause in the contract. The clause states that if the sponsor’s core business is affected by a change in law enforced by the Indian government, they ‘won’t be liable to pay anything’ to the cricket board.”

Dream11, founded 18 years ago and now valued at $8 billion, became BCCI’s lead sponsor in July 2023, replacing edtech firm Byju’s with a three-year deal worth ₹358 crore. Besides the Indian team, they also ventured into the IPL, where they roped in several top players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah as their brand ambassadors. In 2020, they even became the trophy sponsor of the IPL, replacing Chinese firm Vivo.
