A policeman has been left blind in one eye after being hit by a six struck by South Africa batsman David Miller in an Indian Premier League match.

Aloke Aich, 53, was hit in the right eye during the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab at Eden Gardens on 9 May.

"The incident and its ramifications have been terrible." Miller said.

"I wish this was not true - I am sorry for Mr Aich's irreversible loss and wish him the best recovery possible."

Aich's son said that Kolkata Police were paying his father's medical expenses but also said that he feared the injury might force his father, the sole earning member in the family, to give up his job.

"I don't know what will happen. With his right eye gone, I don't think he would be able to sit behind the wheel again," he told the Indian Express newspaper.

"Will they keep him in the job or will he be asked to take voluntary retirement? How will we survive if he loses his job?

"We are a lower middle-class family, dependent solely on his income."

Miller scored 27 not out from 11 balls in the mathc in question, which Kolkata won by one run.

The 25-year-old first joined Kings XI Punjab in the IPL in 2011, and hit a 38-ball century against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Mohali in May 2013, the third fastest hundred in the history of the tournament.

The left-hander has appeared in 71 one-day internationals and 31 Twenty20 internationals for South Africa.

Deserves compensation of some sort.

It shouldn't be Miller's responsibility to pay for him but the IPL (or the home team) should look after him and his family

Miller hit a kid today according to Cricinfo before the game whilst he was practicing in the outfield on his hook shot. Seriously irresponsible imo and should face some sort of action

I have watched lots of live cricket and you will never see batsmen practicing their batting near the outfield for the obvious risk there is.

The kid fainted on the spot and was hit on the chest....

No one is saying he is responsible. But it wouldn't hurt him to at least visit the guy in hospital.

Remember Gayle visiting a young girl in hospital last time.

This is tragic.

Can we not try and make silly statements?

: So sad :(
i remember Gayle six hit a kid , and then he went to the hospital with flowers and his MOM award too.

Do IPL have some sort of liability claim if someone in the crowd or any of the officials get injured or worse?7

I just hope they can pay for the loss earnings as well as compensation for what has happened.

I assume not as there's no insurance? The policeman thing is an accident and tragic, and I assume has happened before (think an afridi six hurt someone before)

The incident today though is unforgivable in my opinion. Really stupid to practice your batting on the outfield before a game.

Mumbai, July 2: South Africa's middle-order batsman David Miller has been approached by a Kolkata-based Indian police constable for monetary help, it is learnt here.
Nicknamed as "Killer Miller", the 26-year-old left-handed Miller's hard-hitting six for Punjab team in the last IPL season has made the policeman Alok Aich losing vision in one of the eyes.
During the IPL match between KKR vs KXI Punjab on 9th May,2015 at Eden Garden, Kolkata, my father was seriously hit with a sixer from David Miller. He has lost his right eye completely, also broke his right cheek and nasal bone, when he was on duty at Eden Garden. His left eye is also affected with a stroma", his son, Rana Aich has written a letter to the South Africa Cricketers' Association chief Tony Irish, who incidentally is also the FICA chief.
"In this situation we are very much helpless. I am a graduate, but unemployed, my father is only the earning member of our family. Now we are in-dire-need of financial help", the son has written a letter.
Without blaming the batsman, the son says, "I know it was an accident, but we are suffering heavily due to this, so I humbly request the financial help from David Miller. Please come forward and help us with the maximum financial help you can make".
The police son has also made similar appeal to the Indian cricket board and also requested the IPL commissioner Rajeev Shukla.
The family is awaiting a favourable response from the richest cricket board.

This is rubbish.

BCCI - give the family something.

Surely the BCCI/IPL should be looking after him.

Disappointing that it hasn't occurred.

They might give him a few bucks now to make sure they avoid too much negative press but i would have been shocked if they had actually helped the bloke before this point.

Tough luck for the Indian Copper unfortunately. It's part of his job and Miller doesn't owe him anything.

Arguably however the IPL or the BCCI have a duty of care. He got injured whilst performing a role on their behalf.

Government and BCCI should be helping him out.

Its not right to put indirect pressure on Miller though I won't blame the family. They are helpless.

I hope the authorities help them out.

If Miller decides to compensate then he would be setting a bad precedent. Incidents like this happen all over the world and the players can't take responsibility for each and every accident victim. Government/BCCI/IPL committee should look after the cop until his son gets a job.

The least the government can do is get the son a job..

I dont know how credible that report is.I am trying to find out about this issue.Normally the Kolkata Police is quite a benevolent employer and their employees are taken care of.

IDK if the guy was asked to take VRS.But that would mean paying him 3 years salary plus the pension.

The Police dept. and the govt should look into it.

Surely its the IPLs responsibility not Millers!

Really an embarrassing thing if true.

BCCI should feel ashamed that a cop who lost his eye rendering services in their tournament has to seek help from a foreigner who owes him nothing.

Miller can help but it's not really his responsibility here.

South Africa batsman David Miller recalled his six which blinded an Indian policeman in one eye during the 2015 edition of the IPL. The constable, going by the name of Alok Aich, lost eyesight in his right eye after being struck by a ball hit for a six by Miller - who was then playing for Kings XI Punjab - during a match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens.

Miller’s bad luck did not end there. A few matches later, Miller’s six thudded onto the chest of a 10-year-old in the stands. Sidharth Upadhya, who had come from Bhopal with his father Mayank Upadhya to watch the afternoon match, fainted and was carried to the medical room at the cricket ground by a cop. Sidharth later complained of chest pain and was rushed to a hospital, but fortunately, was doing fine.

“It was quite a big issue, to be honest with you. It was extremely serious and I think I blinded the policeman and it was quite a situation that we had. I still remember the shot and how it went through the air and everything unravelled in a couple of days actually,” Miller was quoted as saying by IANS.

“It came out in the press and the newspapers and was quite tough to deal with, to be completely honest with you. Fortunately, that is not going to be happening this year without the crowds.”

Although Miller, who this year, will be padding up for the Rajasthan Royals is slightly bummed to be playing in front of empty stands, for the South Africa batsman, this isn’t the first time he’ll witness playing without crowds.

“This will be my first time playing in front of no crowds. But back in South Africa, we’re used to playing four-day games in front of no crowds; there’s maybe just a man and his dog there to watch. T20 and IPL, though, is going to be very different with no crowds, to be honest,” Miller added.

We get the BCCI sycophants telling us how rich they are, so where is the help for this guy. Surely, helping this guy isn't financially too onerous on a board that boasts about its billion $ TV deal.

Why so much hate, it's an 5 year old thread and that report (title) not reliable..

No hate, just a response to the BCCI sycophants who tell us how poor we are but somehow those billions don't stretch to look after the poor workers in Stadiums.

I don't know what became of this.

If the BCCI didn't do anything they better hang their heads in shame.

Could somebody please let us know what happened eventually and if anyone helped him out?

It is disgraceful if BCCI or Kings XI didn't fully compensate the police constable for this. These are cash rich authorities who own millions of dollars worth of wealth. If you they can't spare some money in such exceptional cases then hell with these riches. What a disgrace on humanity.
