The 2017–18 Indian Super League season will be the fourth season of the Indian Super League, the football league, since its establishment in 2013. The season will start on 17 November 2017 and the regular season will conclude on 4 March 2018.The finals will occur from the second week of March 2018 with the final occurring on 17 March 2018 in Kolkata.

Two new sides will join the league as expansion franchises: Bengaluru and Jamshedpur.

The two new clubs will be the ninth and tenth teams in the league. This makes this the first edition of the ISL in which there will be more than eight teams participating. As well as expanding two teams, the league will also expand two more months, being played in five months instead of three.

ATK are the defending champions from the
2016 season . They defeated the Kerala Blasters in the final on penalties to win the championship.

The fourth edition of the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) kicks off with a battle between old nemesis Kerala Blasters FC and ATK at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Friday. The Blasters will be keen to avenge last year’s final loss in the very same venue as Kochi gears up for a blockbuster season-opener.

ATK have got the better of Kerala in the past, but will be without star striker Robbie Keane, who’s sidelined with injury. The Blasters, however, are expected to field a full-strength squad as both sides look to open their campaign with three points.

Head to Head: ATK 5 – 1 Kerala Blasters FC. 2 draws

KEY PLAYERS

Iain Hume (Kerala Blasters)

The prolific Canadian returns to Kochi to play against the club he left Kerala for after the inaugural season. His success has been unwavering and his record of being his team’s top-scorer in every Hero ISL season goes to show that. He is also Hero ISL’s all-time top-scorer and lifted the title with Kolkata last year. Also, good with his link-up play, how he combines with Dimitar Berbatov in Kerala’s frontline will be crucial to the fortunes of the southerners.

Eugeneson Lyngdoh (ATK)

The defending champions made no hesitation in splurging the cash on Lyngdoh in the pre-season draft. The joint-most expensive domestic signing in this year’s draft, Lyngdoh will need to bring his A-game at the heart of midfield while trying to initiate attacks in a hostile stadium against Kerala. The talented midfielder’s pinpoint passing and clinical finishing will be worrying for opposition defences. He’s certain to be a driving force for ATK and is a definite game-changer. Lyngdoh is also known to be good with his head and has nodded in a fair share of crosses after arriving late in the box.

POTENTIAL STARTING LINEUPS

Kerala Blasters FC:

Kerala will most likely opt for a 4-5-1 formation with Paul Rachubka in goal, a flat back-four and pacey wingers in midfield. Sandesh Jhingan, Nemanja Lakic Pesic and Rino Anto, are all likely to start at the back, while local star CK Vineeth will be providing width in midfield. Up front, Hume’s exchanges with the deep lying Berbatov is sure to keep the opposition backline on their toes.

Goalkeeper: Paul Rachubka

Defenders: Soraisam Pritam Kumar Singh, Nemanja Lakic Pesic, Sandesh Jhingan, Rino Anto

Midfielders: CK Vineeth, Courage Pekuson, Siam Hanghal, Jackichand Singh

Forwards: Dimitar Berbatov, Iain Hume

Head coach, Rene Meulensteen on previous losses to ATK: “Whatever has happened in the past, is in the past. It’s not relevant now with what’s going to happen tomorrow. It's KBFC vs ATK. Only the names of the teams are the same. Rest is different. Managers, players, everything is different.”

ATK:

Kolkata will probably begin with a traditional 4-4-2 formation with Jordi Figueras Montel and Tom Thorpe at the centre of defence and Eugeneson Lyngdoh and Conor Thomas in the heart of midfield. The responsibility in attack will have to be shouldered by the likes of Zequinha, Njazi Kuqi and target-man Robin Singh.

Goalkeeper: Debjit Majumder

Defenders: Keegan Pereira, Jordi Figueras Montel, Thomas Joseph Thorpe, Prabir Das

Midfielders: Zequinha, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Conor Thomas, Bipin Singh

Forwards: Robin Singh, Njazi Kuqi

ATK head coach, Teddy Sheringham on playing in Kochi: “It’s mouth-watering for a manager and for my players to come to this fantastic stadium and know that it’s going to be a full house in the first game. It’s what you dream of as a boy. You want to play in front of a lot of fans. You want that excitement. You want that atmosphere.”

KEY STAT

Kerala have beaten ATK just once in eight meetings and that sole victory came at Kochi in Hero ISL 2014.
LAST MEETING

The last time these two sides met was in the final of Hero ISL 2016, which ATK won 4-3 on penalties after it finished 1-1 at the end of extra-time in Kochi.

Even though this was a draw, ATK without Robbie Keane outplayed us in all aspects. I hope that our team gets better with each passing game.

Anyone know what the ISL league revenue generated numbers look like in past years. Just wondering if it matches IPL numbers or close..?? Are the crowds filling up the stadiums as they would for cricket. I assume they do if they are pumping money by also bringing foreign players and coaches ??

Good to see the league expanding.Really good for Indian football. However it’s weird that they have 2 separate leagues.Which is the primary one?

From a non-Indian perspective ISL,as it got Bangalore too now and prime time slots.

Paul Rachubka?? Boy that takes me back. Vs Blackpool for Leeds about seven years ago he got a defender sent off, was at fault for 3 first half goals and was subbed and replaced by an 18 year old who'd never played before.

Never played again.

Any footage? I assume the quality is the same as division 3/4 in England?

Tbh the quality is really bad, not even eligibile to compare with any division of the european leagues. But the 6 Indian players in each team will have a good opportunity to play and learn from the experienced foreign players and coaches. And apart from that we, the minority football fans have "our own home team" and league to cheer for apart from European football clubs and their leagues.:)

If he was not there, we already would have conceded 2 or 3goals. He did pretty well in that game.

Aaron Hughes, the Irish defender was our Captain (KBFC) last year. Really a nice guy and loved by the fans here.:)

Robbie is the man, reckon he'll score bags of goals once he adjusts to the climate

Here is the footage of last seasons final in Kochi, Kerala.
Breaks my heart whenever i see it..:(

Tbf it looks a decent level of quality, better than I expected.

Football is the most competitive sport in the world, to reach the levels of European clubs is near impoissible for continent apart from South America. I think its good to have local teams to support with good tv coverage of games which will help India in the long run but I wouldn't be too confident of qualifying for the World Cup for a very long time.

But it has to begin somewhere doesn't it . The football crazy states of India (Kerala, Goa, WB and the whole North east ) have a combined population of close to 140 million , which is way bigger than most football dominating nations.

This ISL has rejuvenated interest in the game on my home state of Kerala (35 million population) with majority of its population, well placed (economically atleast) to supply future talent . All that missing was supporting infra and financial/social rewards. Which the ISL has shown promise of supplying.

I agree with this. One has to start somewhere and it's going to take baby steps. No one is claiming here that India will be Compared to Brazil or France in soccer for at least another 40 years. But in order to learn the game and try and generate interest one has to start somewhere. This competition is also not about the game but it's also opening another vertical with job creation , infrastructure upgrades, hence more economic growth. You can't lay all you're eggs in one basket and rely on cricket forever which is played only between a few countries. India though late to game is on the right track.

final is here.. Bangalore vs Chennai

Pretty good season this was and long too (4 months). Tickets for the final were sold out within a couple of hours online :(

The atmosphere inside the stadiums have become livelier with each passing season. Chanting, banter, loyalty, rivalary all have started to shape-up. Avg. attendance 16k+! Guess the quality of football will improve too with time.

Induction of Bengaluru FC into ISL has certainly injected new sense of professionalism to the leauge, hopefully they induct couple of more teams from I-leauge next session.

And watch out for the new 8000 Sq. feet BFC banner tomorrow in the West Block

Go BFC Go...Kick some macha posteriors

Are the folks that watch this comparable to those that watch the ipl in stadiums ? Are the ticket prices high or it varies. How many teams for ISL ?

Lol @ Wannabe Indian Football fans with their fake banners. There is no history for such leagues or the clubs compared to European and South American Clubs. Looks all fake and cheap imitation of everything European.

What do you propose Indians do when watching football in stadium?

Shouldn't even be there given they have no history compared to the Europeans and South American clubs. And if they are they should just quietly sit there sipping chai and dunking biscuits in said chai. (Makes both the chai and biscuit much more delicious btw).

Love the taste. Although the sight could be disgusting at times when people hurriedly try to eat the dipped part(which has become too soft thanks to extra dipping) when it's about to break off from the main biscuit and in the process end up spilling the tea on themselves.

Reminds me of an old joke.

Englishman watching an Indian (just using Indian as there wasn't Pakistan at the time) during the chai and biscuit process.

Englishman - Wow, they are so clean they even rinse their biscuit before they eat it.

*Indian dips a few biscuits and then proceeds to drink the rest of the chai.

Englishman - :ishant

:))) That Ishant Sharma smiley was the cherry on the top.

Ticket prices are on the lower side as compared to cricket. But the fans are more creative. It's not a mass sport yet, hence niche crowd. But its picking up. It has 10 teams, with home and away fixtures spread across 4 months, this season.Semi finals again are home and away format followed by the final.
Top billing this season: inr 3.16 crores for Miku- venezuala and top Indian billing : 1.50 crores Sunil Chetri

Maybe nowhere compared to the European and South American leagues, but India does have some history of football, in case you didn't know. India even finished fourth in the 1956 Olympics.

Clubs like Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting and R.B.Ferguson have been around since the 1800s. Foot ball was once as popular as cricket in the East of India, West Bengal in particular.

The overwhelming emphasis on cricket has been at the expense of other sports in India. As if that was not enough, the governing boards have all been under the control of clueless blockheads appointed by politicians.

It is good that things are changing finally, and there is nothing wrong in copying the superior European leagues.

My team was really worse this season. I didn't go to Kochi to watch their match this time.

Next year the i-league club is shifting their base to my district. In sha allah, will try to watch it when the Indian arrows club come there.

Hope Chennai destroys Bangalore, Bangalore FC is the opposite of RCB unfortunately, they perform well under pressure.

Bangalore FC should win this. They deserve it.

Sorry Chennai fans but i can't stand Abhishek Bachan's celebrations after any win.

I'm watching the game live and wow the atmosphere is electric out there!
Completely full stadium.

So the the team who was 8 points ahead in the leauge got undone in the final..unfair :(
Refree made a few marginal blunders too. Well played CFC

Way to go Bengaluru... second best in the first attempt... Next season will be ours!

Over and out :(
