HYDERABAD: Researchers at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT-H) have created the first-ever Indian Brain Atlas. The study has revealed that the Indian brain, on an average, is smaller in height, width and volume when compared to Western and other eastern populations. This will help in early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other brain-related ailments.

The research has been published in Neurology India, a peer-reviewed journal.

Jayanthi Sivaswamy of the Centre for Visual Information Technology, who worked on the project, said that the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) template, which is used as the standard, was created using Caucasian brains. This, according to the researchers, is not ideal to analyse brain differences in the Indian population.

“As Indian brains are smaller in size when compared to MNI, the difference in scans can look alarming and lead to misdiagnosis,” Jayanthi told TOI. She added that MRI images are compared with pre-loaded MNI template to arrive at a diagnosis. “There is clear evidence based on the study that it is desirable to build a larger atlas as it is important to understand structurally what is normal. This would help catch several brain conditions early on.”

Jayanthi said that even Chinese and Korean brain templates had been constructed, but there was no corresponding template for the India-specific population. She said that the first attempt by the IIIT-H team at creating an India-specific atlas involved 50 individuals, evenly balanced out across genders.

“MRI scans of these subjects’ brains were taken at three different hospitals across three different scanners to rule out variations in scanning machines. Emboldened by the results of the pilot study, we went on to recruit 100 willing participants in the eventual construction of the atlas, referred to as IBA 100,” she added.

Jayanthi said that the atlas was validated against other atlases for various populations. “These differences in height, width, and volume are found even at the structural level, such as in the volume of the hippocampus and so on. But overall, IBA 100 is more comparable with Chinese and Korean atlases than the distant Caucasian one (MNI),” she said.

She added that her team is currently focussing on understanding the aging process. “There are many changes that take place in a brain due to advancing age, with the most typical one being atrophy, shrinking of structures,” She also added that this will help in diagnosing dementia or Alzheimers as they are associated with atrophy of the hippocampus.

What is the impact, if any?

With age, brain atrophies ( brain mass shrinks). For a smaller brain it Will occur at a comparatively lesser age.

Also Degenerative Brain Diseases will manifest at younger age as compared to other population groups and should be suspected at younger age.

Motor Neuron Disease
Alzheimer's
Parkinsonism
Huntingtons disease
Different kinds of Dementia

Must be sheer effort then, probably why they have developed a reputation as nerds.

This is very well established. The only predictive measure of a scholar's success (or not) in obtaining a PhD is the hours of work they put in. Intelligence, aptitude, the topic etc do not make any difference; it's just how hard they are prepared to work.
And , of course, brain size has not been directly related to intelligence; otherwise the average female would be less intelligent than the average male.
Frankly, even trying to assess intelligence objectively is not an established science.

If Indians have small brains, what about pakistanis then? Probably the same? Anyways God has created them and everyone else as He has wanted so we should all be greatful.

That's not good. I assume this is natural phenomenon and humans have no control over the size of brains? Or is it something to do with Genetics?

Right. We can be the most intelligent person on earth in one aspect in one moment while can be very stupid on another field at a different moment.

That's the case would have been had human brain was a machine. Whenever there's atrophy, the neighboring cells will compensate for the loss of functioning of those cells. In case of neurology, it's not always 1+1=2. Hence those conclusions are far fetched and can't be proved.

Actually the size of the brain doesn't matter. It's the brain vs body size that matters. Otherwise elephants would have been more intelligent than us.

So according to you there are no ill effects of this? Good to hear if true.

I'll say something. In medical textbooks, normal BP will be written as 140/80 (more or less, it varies between Russian and American versions).

I've a friend who has constant BP of 170/100 at rest. When he works or gets angry, it shoots to 190. By logic, he should be given medicine on order to bring down the BP. But if he lowers it, he gets fainted due to low BP. So the abnormal BP became his regular BP.

In medicine, you have to take it case to case basis. You can't generalize.

What he stated could be true for someone where as in case of another person, it may not have any effect at all.

Strange thing - does that mean people in Pakistan also have similar issues? Surely man made borders dont influence such studies?

Come on mig. Do you believe a sample size of 100 could make a correct assessment of 1 billion? Slightest variation will end up huge in such extrapolation.

Think all South Asian countries suffer from stunted growth due to lack of proper nutrition during childhood. Also this might be the reason why the average height in South Asia of a full grown adult male is easily a few inches shorter than their European or North American counterparts.

Height has more to do with genetics than nutrition. Yes , nutrition does play a part. But no matter what you eat , you are not going to grow much more than the average height of your parents. South Asian (SE and East Asian as well) genes mostly doesn't allow growth of more than 175 cm.

Small people, small hearts and small brains too.

Small in every department.

Even after living and growing up in western countries, many Indian kids look malnourished with thin bone structure. Maybe thats because most Indians in the US are from South, where they are genetically smaller and weaker. (No pun intended, just stating my observation).

Like many other such stereotyping researches, it doesn't apply to your Bhaijaan. I have a big brain! Get out of here.

It does not mean that all of them are thick!:rp Indian people do always seem to top such weird lists.

According to a survey, Kiwi men are worst lovers.

That's the kind of list your Bhaijaan will never top.

What was the need to waste time and money on this research? The researchers could have simply looked at the election and re-election of Narindra Modi and reached the same conclusion :P
