iPhone 11 release date and price

The iPhone 11 starts at $699 / £729 / AU$1,199, which is a touch cheaper than the iPhone XR was at launch.

You can pre-order the iPhone 11 from September 13, and it'll ship (or you can buy it for real) from September 20. Most networks in most countries will offer the device, as it's far from an exclusive handset.

If you're in the UK and primed to purchase the new iPhone on release, you can register your interest with certain retailers so that you'll be the first to hear about their best prices. Vodafone and Carphone Warehouse both have such pre-registration pages, while Mobiles.co.uk will give you £30 cashback if you pre-register with them and then go on to purchase the phone.

iPhone 11 design and display

The new iPhone 11 is available in Purple, White, Yellow, Green, Black and Product Red. The rear of the phone is glass, and there's a Lightning connector on the bottom edge.

There's no 3.5mm headphone jack on this device, with Apple having dropped the port.

It comes with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina display, which is the same size as the screen on 2018's iPhone XR. The notch remains at the top of the screen, and overall the device looks remarkably like last year's phone.

The dimensions of the phone are 150.9mm x 75.7mm x 8.3mm, and it weighs in at 194 grams.

It's also water resistant, coming with an IP68 rating. That should mean you're able to submerge it in the bath or take it in the shower, as it can survive in up to two meters of water.

iPhone 11 camera

There's a big focus on the camera this year, and that's because it's a dual lens sensor, for the first time on the cheaper iPhone.

There's a 12MP wide camera with a 26mm lens, and that's paired with a 12MP ultra-wide camera. That second snapper has 120 degree field of view.

Night Mode has returned for low light conditions, and it comes turned on automatically on the iPhone 11. It's a similar affair to Google's Night Sight on Pixel phones, and the on-stage example seemed quite impressive.

It improves brightness and attempts to reduce noise in your images. Apple believes the iPhone 11 will be three times faster in low light scenarios too.

Video modes include 4K video recording, slow and time-lapse. Apple also says it has improved image stabilization on the new phone too.

Overall, Apple claims to have the "highest quality video recording in a smartphone". We'll be sure to test out that claim at the time of our full review.

The selfie camera is a 12MP TrueDepth camera, and the aim is so you can rotate the phone to take wider images although this isn't a wide-angle shooter. It's also the first time Apple has included 4K video recording on the selfie camera.

iPhone 11 specs and performance

The chipset inside the iPhone 11 is called the A13 Bionic. Apple claims it has the fastest CPU and GPU in a smartphone with this device, and that's something else we'll be sure to test in the future.

Apple has shown off some video games being played on the phone, but we've yet to fully learn what the chipset will be capable of.

The battery inside the iPhone 11 comes with the claim it'll last an hour longer than the iPhone XR. Apple never announces the exact sizes of its batteries, but we'll be sure to learn it in the coming days.

The device will come running iOS 13 software out of the box immediately that comes with a system-wide Dark Mode for the first time.

A claim on the stage says it comes with "enhanced Face ID", but it's uncertain exactly how the facial unlocking technology has been improved.

The phone will be available in 64GB, 128GB or 256GB options. We've yet to learn the exact differences in prices for the three devices.

You Don't Need an iPhone 11 Unless Your Current Phone Is Literally Unusable

The practically, morally, and financially responsible thing to do is to use your current phone for as long as possible.

Are you reading this blog on your phone? Good news! You don’t need a new phone.

Apple announced the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max today with all the typical fanfare we give to our depraved tradition of treating gadget releases as major, nation-stopping news events. There is literally no reason to watch these events, because we have already seen them many times before.

There were many stats and facts splashed on screen; the new phones have faster processors and better cameras and more pixels than the old ones. The phones are better than before. This means nothing because you are either an iPhone person or you are an Android person, and you either need a new phone or you don’t need a new phone, and if you don’t need a new phone then there is no reason to buy this one.

This practical truth, for reasons existential, moral, and extremely banal, becomes more true with each passing year. Buying a smartphone in 2019 should be like buying a very expensive microwave. If your microwave does not turn on, or regularly catches fire, then you should buy a new microwave.

This is all to say that this iPhone looks slightly better than the last few iPhones, and if your old iPhone is not literally unusable (does not turn on, cannot run apps), then you don’t need to buy this one. Beyond true unusability, anything that is busted on your old iPhone can be fixed both cheaply and quickly at any number of independent repair shops. Busted cameras, cracked screens, and batteries that lose charge quickly can be replaced for a tiny fraction of what a new iPhone costs. A phone that is not purposefully destroyed should last, I don't know, three or four years. Definitely longer than a year.

Your repaired phone will feel like a new phone, and it will still let you do things like browse Facebook, send text messages, and take pictures. You will have saved many hundreds of dollars, participated in your local economy, and supported a small repair business. You will have done a very small thing to help prevent more metals being mined from the Earth and to prevent a still-useful device from ending up in a landfill or from being shredded into metal confetti.

When your phone is broken beyond repair, then it is time to buy a new phone. In the same way that you (probably) don’t watch two-hour-long livestreams about new microwave models or research its every spec before you go out and get a new one, you don’t need to watch or pay attention to these yearly iPhone keynotes. The good news is this requires less effort and less money from you. All you have to do is use your phone until it no longer turns on and then go buy a new one.

Dark mode for the first time? Dark mode is ancient. 1 hour more battery life? Oh my!

People just don't understand. The more powerful hardware the more power you need. This is where Blackberry excel with the K2. They have found the perfect balance between hardware and performance, thus the battery life of up to 2 days!

As I mentioned in the other thread, if the key features are Camera and Video, then it's time to accept the Smartphone era is now in a decline.

Now wonder burner phones are making a comeback.

I have only used black phones and I have always cringed at the white, gold and multicolored variants, but the midnight green looks incredible. Not sure if I would be upgrading though.

I bought the iPhone Xs Max 64 GB Gold variant this January. Kind of hypocritical because I have always bashed Apple for overpricing it’s products. But regardless, I bought my second Apple product in January, the first being an iPod Classic 128GB back in 2009.

I’m going to upgrade to another iPhone, but that is when my phone stops receiving anymore OS upgrades.

They have added one extra camera and renamed it iPhone Pro

Upgrade not worth it. Same old design but with even more uglier camera hump. Apple fans should wait for the next iPhone 12 because it's tipped to bring more radical changes.

iPhone 11 doesn't sound nearly as cool as iPhone X.

Anyone asks what phone you have, you can just be like "yeah I have the X".

11 doesn't have any ring to it.

Phone is uglier too.

This is just based on aesthetics

I think I wouldnt go for this as new camera is first gen. I also agree with many that an upgrade is not worth it.

I have an iphone XR which I got a few months ago as a company offered it at a low price by "mistake".
My 6s was giving problems from day one and even after they gave me a brand new one 2 years later of us it still was crap in terms of battery which is another reasons I changed.

been using it for a week.... coming back to life with the new phone.. previous one was 6splus... so a major shift.... dont like the mid-night green though... had i seen them, would have gone for silver... but still

battery is actually amazing.. am a heavy user and it lasts me a day ...
rest all niormal... camera is good but i dont care much there

Apple products are trash and over priced.

Infact the software really hasnt changed over the years.
They have added some elements that were already in the android phones.

Marketing is key when it comes to apple.

Wouldnt buy any apple products personally.

I used the iphone 4 when i lost my galaxy.

And i used my friends iphone x.

Literally the same. A few minor tweaks here and there.

upgrades are not worth it every year, and you wont even notice a difference by upgrading year or even two after, however thats where apple trumps its competitors, because the hardware and the software is so robust that it can last a long time and go on for years, whereas samsung or pretty much every other company produces pieces that are disposable tech pretty much and not only does android get very buggy and lag even the phone starts breaking.

I should be getting mine next week. The Iphone X is great but always a nice feeling getting the latest phone. Not interested in other phones, they may be better in most areas but can never match the design and build quality of apple.

Don't agree regarding hardware point.
Truth is every smartphone is fragile including Apple iphones. It's myth that iPhone would last more than comparable other flagship phones.
Android is much improved now compared to it's beginning year.
