the only sensible solutions is for both sides to declare some form of hollow victory and go back to political posturing. israel has failed to instigate a regime change, and iran has further alienated every arab entity in the gulf.

It's a tactical decision. They want a message to sent out to their people that there is still a solid connection to their passed away Imam and to their enemies that the King might be dead but long live the King aka the 'regime', which their enemies so want to topple.

The Economist has an article saying it's a clear sign that the IRGC has emerged dominant over the clergy. The civilian government and army were not that influential anyway.

Mojtaba's no Mujtahid, no Ayatollah... actually first attended seminary at the age of 30. So he will depend for legitimacy on 2 things - his father's name and IRGC support. I suppose they think this will allow them to control him.

If he's allowed to live, he may come into his own but for now he's a very shaky supreme leader. Shows how even in the midst of a war and an existential threat, politics and maneuvering never stops.
