IRELAND CAPTAIN WILLIAM Porterfield has launched a passionate and scathing denunciation of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after his side missed out on a place at the contracted 2019 World Cup.

After being handed an unlikely lifeline to secure a place at next summer’s 10-team tournament, Ireland’s hopes of competing at a fourth consecutive World Cup were left in tatters with a five-wicket defeat to Afghanistan this afternoon.

Graham Ford’s side had already suffered heavy reversals to West Indies and Zimbabwe but other results went their way, providing them with one final chance, only for Ireland to produce a feeble effort with the bat.

Ireland’s 209/7 off 50 overs was never going to be enough and despite a spirited display with the ball, most notably from Simi Singh, Porterfield and his team-mates fell heartbreakingly short in Harare.

Instead, Afghanistan will join fellow qualifiers West Indies in next summer’s tournament, which will be made up of 10 teams for the first time as the ICC look to increase its revenue from TV deals sold to the big three of India, England and Australia.

Under the new format, those nations are guaranteed nine televised World Cup fixtures, thus allowing the governing body — which purports to want to expand the game — maximum its revenue streams from TV rights.

It means the likes of Ireland, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Netherlands and UAE all miss out at the showpiece tournament, further reducing the opportunities for lower ranked nations.

While Porterfield acknowledged the fact his side had a golden chance to secure the final qualifying place, he used his post-match press conference to vent his frustration at the ICC’s short-sighted and money-orientated decision.

“It’s been a fantastic tournament,” the Ireland captain said.

“But how there’s only two teams going to a competition that’s played every 208 weeks and you’ve got a six-week competition, to just play it so two or three big teams can play nine games on TV so the ICC can cash in with a big cheque, and a lot of teams are leaving here with nothing in their pocket.

“What have they got to look forward to now for the next few years? It’s going to be so hard for them. The big cheque they’re getting [from the World Cup] has to be pushed back down through.

“All I hear is how good this competition has been, how everyone has beaten everyone, it’s gone round in a circle.

“It has to be put back into the game because if countries don’t have a World Cup to look forward to or the possibility of getting to the World Cup; if they actually give that carrot, dangle it in front of countries, surely cricket is going to get better in those countries and actually expand.

“I’m not just saying that because we didn’t get there but I feel sorry for a lot of countries that are leaving here that don’t know what’s going to happen next week.”

Porterfield added: ”I feel sorry for Scotland how it ended for them. But they go back now and they’ve probably got three games of cricket this summer. For them to progress I think it’s going to be harder.

“I feel sorry for a lot of other teams that are leaving here. Obviously ourselves and Afghanistan got elevated, which we’re grateful for, but we need to keep getting funding in to improve facilities, get those extra fixtures.

“We leave here, yes we’re gutted now, but in a couple of weeks’ time we’ve got to regroup and build up towards the Test match and we’ve got a few other fixtures this summer.”

Qualifiers West Indies and Afghanistan join defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, hosts England, South Africa and New Zealand in next summer’s World Cup.

He’s a 100% correct.Afghanistan deserved to go to the World Cup,but so did Ireland,Zimbabwe and the Scots.

Its shameful to call it a "world cup" with 10 teams in it......
Needs to have at least 14 teams minimum.....yes we'll get the odd game where its one sides, but we'll also get that odd game where everyone's biting on their nails just like in the WC qualifier matches

A 12 team world Cup is absolutely fine. 10 teams is a joke, we have the Champions trophy if we just want to pit the top teams against each other.

Ireland and Zimbabwe should blame themselves for ruing their golden chances. Both team played really poor in their last match ad deserve to be kicked out.

Ireland captain William Porterfield has questioned the International Cricket Council's decision to make the World Cup smaller.

Porterfield's side will miss out on the tournament for the first time since 2003 after a five-wicket defeat to Afghanistan in their winner-takes-all qualifier in Harare on Friday.

The ICC cut the number of teams competing from 14 at the last tournament to just 10 for next summer's event in England and Wales.

The top eight ranked sides were assured of their place and will be joined in a round-robin group stage by Afghanistan and two-times winners West Indies, who came through a hard-fought qualifying campaign.

Cricket Scotland chief executive Malcolm Cannon on Thursday questioned why the ICC is cutting down its World Cup while other global sports are expanding theirs, and 32-year-old Porterfield added his criticism after Ireland lost with five balls to spare.

The Ireland skipper told a post-match press conference, which was posted on the ICC Media's Twitter page: "It's been a fantastic tournament.

"(But) how there's only two teams going to a competition that's played every 208 weeks and you've got a six-week competition, to just play it so two or three big teams can play nine games on TV so the ICC can cash in with a big cheque, and a lot of teams are leaving here with nothing in their pocket.

"What have they got to look forward to now for the next few years? It's going to be so hard for them.

"The big cheque they're getting (from the World Cup) has to be pushed back down through.

"All I hear is how good this competition has been, how everyone has beaten everyone, it's gone round in a circle.

"I'm not just saying that because we didn't get there but I feel sorry for a lot of countries that are leaving here that don't know what's going to happen next week."

Porterfield's side do have the luxury of knowing their immediate future as they prepare for their first Test match.

Ireland, along with Afghanistan, were given Test status last year and play their first game against Pakistan in May.

Scotland, on the other hand, only have three scheduled games this summer - a one-day international against England and two T20s against Pakistan - after their narrow defeat to West Indies in their rain-affected final qualifier.

Porterfield said: "To some extent we're lucky. We've managed to get where we are.

"I feel sorry for Scotland how it ended for them. But they go back now and they've probably got three games of cricket this summer. For them to progress I think it's going to be harder.

"I feel sorry for a lot of other teams that are leaving here. Obviously ourselves and Afghanistan got elevated, which we're grateful for, but we need to keep getting funding in to improve facilities, get those extra fixtures.

To be honest. Im ok with a 10 team world cup

Thing is simple. In cricket associates and affiliate nations cant give a performance that could make them a winning contendar in a world cup.

They barely grt into the semis. And before someone give the kenya example, that only happened because of forfeits.

Cricket is different to football. Cricket has to cash on the big teams.

Though, to further expand the game ICC has done something else.

They have expanded the ICC world t20. 16 teams can compete. 10 being the top test test members. 4 from the wcl 1 and 2 from wcl 2.

In t20 cricket associate nations have a chance.

The reduction of teams in 50 over cricket lies on the associate nationa themselves and england.

Associate nations havnt improved. It finally took bangladesh 20 years to improve as a team and that happened due to fixing their domestic cricket.

Canada, kenya, namibia they all have regressed.

However as for Ireland i wont blame them.

Ireland has only regressed due to england. If englabd had not taken their players from them the team would had not been soo bad.

Afghanistan wasnt always a top team. It only had hamid hassan and nabi that were actually good. But it was because of those 2 good players that afghanistan kept giving good performances and inspired others back home with their wins.

Today its because of hamid hassan and nabi that we see the likes of dawlat zadran, rashid and others coming in the system.

Had these two players ran off to some other country, afghanistans peformance would had regressed and probably wouldnt had achieved at such heights at such quik pace.

If ireland had its full best squad it could had played rankin, dockrell, ed joyce, morgan.

You cant blame the players though. Everyone will go for a better oppurtunity.

If they want the big three to play at least 9 games each, they could have a 20-team World Cup then, with two pools of 10 each. Ensure that the bottom 10 teams get to play as much top-level cricket as the top 10 teams, be it either through domestic cricket in the major cricketing nations or international matches against top teams.
