Najam Sethi has recently confirmed that Babar Azam will lead Pakistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup and beyond (depending on the results etc).

So is he the right choice for this role? If not him, then who?

Who are the other options?

Realistically, the options are very limited at the moment.

If the best batter in the side is the criteria for captaincy...

Mickey speaking to Saj regarding Babar Azam:

Saj: Babar Azam is one of the guys who you worked with four years ago, he's matured into one of the finest batters in the world, Mickey, and obviously you've got some impact in that because he speaks very highly of you. He's currently captain in all three formats. Is that something that you want to take on going forward?

Mickey Arthur: "Babar is progressing, Babar is maturing. I've got a massive amount of respect for Babar. He's a wonderful man, he's a wonderful player and at the minute he needs to progress, he needs to learn, he needs to be given the wings to fly in that role and we'll be there to support him and help him in order to make him the captain that he wants to be."

I don't see what the problem is. He's scoring runs and the team is winning. Obviously he's the best choice this close to a World Cup.

He should be given the ODI captaincy until the home CT in 2025. A kneejerk reaction is never beneficial. The team is in a very good spot right now.

We have beaten weak teams. Unfortunately in the WC vs the big boys it's only going to go one way. Babar is a defensive captain who chokes under pressure. Sadly it's a national trait for us.

Abdul Razzaq speaking in an interview

"Look, when you believe that you should try new things, you are thinking about the improvement of cricket. But if you insist on keeping your thoughts limited to removing Babar from captaincy and bringing in a new captain, how will there be any improvement?"

"You should give him [Babar] the free hand, and the controversy regarding his removal from leading the team should end"

"Babar Azam is and will remain the skipper of the national team"

No better options, and certainly should not be changed a few months before a WC.

I hate this still being discussed. Especially few months before a world cup.

Just let it to rest, let the guys focus on cricket. The whole focus right now is whether we will play the Asia Cup or not and ahead whether we will play the world cup and after that its Babars captaincy. Theres so many other things to worry about in terms of how to settle in those conditions. Which all rounder to play. What to do with Usama Mir etc etc.

Umar Gul in a recent interview

"I have observed Babar Azam closely during the New Zealand series, and one thing is clear that he is a dominant force, relentlessly striving for the success of his team. When we looked at his performance against the Blackcaps as the skipper, it's evident that he leads with authority"

"As a captain, if you are dominating and your team's performance is exceptional, there is no doubt that you can consider yourself a dominant captain. If Babar is leading the team, he should maintain that dominance. Entrusting him with the fifteen-member squad or the playing XI makes him accountable, and he should indeed be dominant because a leader's duty is to lead from the front and perform for the team, how you take the required performance's from the players and how you will look after them on and off the field,"

"I think it's a good sign that he should dominate, but still he needs to improve few things, because there is no such player who joins the team and turns out to be a good captain immediately. There is always a learning process and every player has to go through that. Right now, I think Babar Azam has total control over the team,"

Babar Azam equals Imran Khan's unwanted feat ahead of India Asia Cup tie after first dismissal for duck in two years

Pakistan were handed a reality check ahead of the big event as the team collapsed for just 201 runs where captain Babar incurred a three-ball duck.

It was Babar's fourth dismissal for a duck in ODI cricket and second as a captain, which put him at par with 1992 World Cup-winning skipper Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Azhar Ali and Younis Khan. He stands fourth on the list among ODI captains with Wasim Akram leading the chart with eight such dismissals, followed by Inzamam-ul-Haq and Moin Khan with four each and Misbah-ul-Haq (three). This was also his first dismissal for a duck in over two years, the last being in July 2021 against England in Cardiff.

His batting has certainly not suffered too much as captain.

He took us to the finals in three consecutive tournaments. It wouldn't astonish me if we make it to the finals again in the upcoming World Cup with him leading. I'm all for keeping him as captain until the 2027 World Cup. Let's refrain from making any captaincy changes until at least 2027.

Babar Azam Turns Down ILT20 Deal, Awaits BPL 2024

Pakistan’s cricket captain, Babar Azam, appears set to decline participation in the upcoming second edition of ILT20, scheduled for January next year. Reportedly, Babar has chosen to forego a substantial offer for the tournament. Reports suggest that the contract proposed for Babar was valued at an impressive half a million USD, with the intention of appointing him as a brand ambassador.

Issues related to image rights and the payment structure emerged as stumbling blocks, causing Babar to reject the offer. Consequently, Babar Azam is poised to feature in the 2024 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which coincides with a similar timeframe.

An insipid, uninspiring captain.

The real test was the 2021 ODI series Vs England and they got thrashed

I have had a change of opinion on him as a captain for ODIS. To be fair, ODI captaincy suits him. But t20 does not suit him.

In odi you have alot of time, thus, you can bring in different bowlers and bowl a 6th or 7th bowler easily. In T20, you need to be cunning and bring in other bowlers at the right time.

Short answer yes.
Long answer: Yes, Theirs currently no one better.

This is the most bizarre news ever

Turns down half a million to play BPL…

They probably told him that he can’t open the innings so he turned them down.

na, T20 is now more important.

ODIs are barely played or watched. Test, yes you need a good captain, but now the focus is more on t20.

T20 captaincy requires you to be smart and cunning. In a 20 over game where the target is 150, you need to be able to adjust your 6th bowler somewhere in between so that you have options when you are in the 17-20th over.

People now adays watch t20 more and judge players based on t20 performance. ODI world cup is considered the pinnacle of cricket but in a few years the T20 world cup might take over the Odi world cup

It's a different matter that people might prefer watching ODI or T20 matches more. However, when it comes to discussing a captain's skills, in ODIs, the game needs to be strategized according to its duration. A longer race requires a better strategy.

Babar is not the most tactically astute captain.

But he is the glue the holds the rest of the XI together and gets everyone giving 100%.

The core of Babar, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen and Shadab have absolutely transformed what a Pakistani dressing room looks like.

Infighting and toxicity have no place in Babar's side. He has bravely dismissed besharam log such as Amir, Sharjeel, Umar Akmal and Imad Wasim. Tough decisions for the greater good.

Good will always triumph over evil. Well done to Babar for this number 1 ranking. It is well deserved.

Babar Azam's statistics alone indicate that he is the most successful captain for Pakistan.

If pakistan loses the world cup, Do not change babar as captain. He has flourished and he's continuing to learn and grow.

It's silly to change captains, I have watched babar go from a mediocre captain to a pretty decent one, yes he still needs to improve but babar has that improving mentality which is why he's a great batsmen, look at his 2016 first innings appearance and look at today, you'll see a huge difference

Top class player will always set big goals.
I have seen likes of sarfraz and Misbah being satisfied after mediocre performances

People don't understand babar, they will never understand someone who's always willing to improve and go further beyond, it's why babar has gone from being average when he first debuted to what he is now, and knowing babar he will master spin eventually due to his willingness to improve, its why babar went from being a mediocre captain, to 2 finals in tournaments irrespective if the last t20 world cup was luck due to Netherlands vs South Africa.

Misbah was the type of guy who persistently was happy to remain medicore, he was happy to just lose to India and be a dummy captain at times. He always set a 220 mindset and 1980's cricket mindset, which is why the misbah and his Successor azhar Ali era shoved us from 6 to 9, misbah is just lucky that saeed ajmal and hafeez were Prime time chuckers and junaid at the time was a swing master making them unplayable before their respective bans and junaid's injury. They got exposed once 2015 hit, all the way to getting embraced 3-0 by Bangladesh.

Sarfraz is a weird story, at the start sarfraz had the biggest winning mentality and seemed to be the perfect pakistani captain. Sarfraz was dead set on winning each and every game and was a great leader, his leadership in the champions trophy 2017 shouldn't be undermined nor should his psl victories. But for some reason from 2019 onwards, sarfraz regressed and adopted the same " I'm happy with medicore performances approach" I don't know why but it reflected on the field. However sarfraz even during peak 2017 didn't understand talent management. He had a winning mentality but he instead kept persisting with Ahmed shezad and Anwar Ali until they were dropped lol.

I think the best thing happened to pakistan in recent years is the stability and not dismissing captain after some losses which was part and parcel of this team over years in last 2 decades.

Sticking with Babar over the years, despite some crucial losses, has strengthened this team's core. Babar is the best player on the side and is respected not only in the Pakistan squad but also among cricket players worldwide. This brings an immense sense of respect for a team player towards their captain. Despite having potential captains in the current team, this team gels together really well, as the players are getting enough opportunities to perform in different leagues and earn a good chunk of money annually. Additionally, the support from the management has really strengthened the team

Tbf, we don't have potential captains in the team, neither shadab nor rizwan.

Shaheen afridi maybe but I haye bowling captains due to their injuries, they can't consistently play and captain.

Well, rizwan, shaheen, shadab they are all doing extremely well in PSL league as captains of their sides. They are for sure potential captains for Pakistan if babar resigns or dismissed from captaincy.

Shadab is a complete no no I'm sorry, same with rizwan.

Reason why babar is good and a modern great is because he shares the same traits that ATG shared like Sachin, Dhoni, virat, in that he's always looking to prove.

Watch babar debut innings against Zimbabwe and the way he currently plays, whereas if you look at players like Ahmed shezad from their first to last innings, nothing ever changed.

Same with babar's captaincy, when he first appeared he was predictable, always following same tried and tested formula of bowlers, if a red hot bowler was taking wickets like shaheen, babar would still not bring him back after the 10th and would wait till death overs to bowl him when the team would have Rebuilt by that point.

Now babar looks to take wickets, he encourages his team, rotates the bowlers well, and gives positive feedback to his team as well as being a genuine role model to many upcoming batsmen like saim ayub who want to play their own way bit still hope to achieve the success that babar achieved. Babar needs to work on team selection and DrS reviews but he always improves which is why I like babar even if this forumn criticises him.

Only player who can has the same mentality that babar has is Shaheen from the list you have selected. Neither shadab or rizwan has the improving mentality, rizwan just gets salty if his own position is affected and shadab is AlrightE but nothing special either.

Yes you are right that the difference between babar and other players are that babar always tries to improve and up his game either in batting or in captaincy. But you have to develop your backup options under the shadow of babar. The only player which i like in captaincy cap is shaheen but he is not long lasting and may become extremely average if captaincy burden is loaded on his shoulders. he can be a t20 captain for sure to start with

But babar should remain captain even if we dont do well in WC. He should be persisted with

Babar is young however, only 28 turning 29, Theirs plenty of time for him still.

Atleast wait 5 to 6 hears before passing on and grooming someone else. Lots of players will come and go in these 5 years, we will find someone worthy eventually.

Babar’s captaincy has considerably improved under the new management.. Seems like they give valuable input/feedback to babar on field placings and overall strategy pf the game, while Saqlain was only Qudrat ka nizam coach and almost a dunmy/yes man to babar.. new management is trying to instill attacking mindset in the team and babar as captain

Because the WC should be the end point where you judge. Outside the WCs both T20 and ODI have absolutely no value anymore.
Consistency is also required if you want to achieve something. Like england did with morgan, they didn't dethrone him after disastrous 2015 world cup campaign.

Currently yes. But for the future they can groom Shaheen Shah Afridi 3-4 years down the line. As of now he hasn't done too badly especially in white ball cricket.

Shaheen has already shown his exceptional leadership for Lahore Qalandars in the PSL, so indeed he can be a strong choice after Babar.

Shaheen is a better choice indeed. But he's a bowler, a fast bowler and, playing a fast bowler in every match is a horrible idea. Rest is important considering their the ones doing the most physical work.

Good point. With so much cricket being played its important to protect your premier fast bowler. I dont see any other potential candidate to replace Babar apart from Shaheen. Shadab was touted at one point of time but his performances are ordinary off late so captaincy burden may further afect his performance.

Pakistan can also groom Haris as a future captain. He can take over as WK and captain from Rizi and Bobby in future. If I am right he captained in the emerging players Asia cup last month.

Yes haris captained and haris captained well. But he's a future candidate, not a current one.

I think inzi wants to make faheem ashraf captain 👀.

If he's going to priorities 1 format then Shaheen can be considered as captain in couple years time.

Babar has taken us to the number 1 spot in cricket so there's no doubt that he is the best choice so far.

I keep seeing many threads about Babar not being a good captain as of today and I do agree. But I cannot see who would be the captain even if Babar was removed or relinquished his captaincy. I think that could be the sad reality, it is not that Pakistan has an option for another captain with better game awareness and strategy.

Who else can fill the captain role even if the team moves away from Babar's captaincy? Rizwan? Shadab? Chacha? Fakhar? Imam? Shaheen? Or should we do more gymnastics and bring back Imad Wasim with the hopes of making him the captain?

I have a feeling that even the selectors know that Babar is not an astute captain YET but want to keep giving him the ropes with the hopes that he can learn and also with the hopelessness that there is none else.

Imad should have been the white ball teams captain post Sarfaraz. You would actually have a proper team and a proper approach. You all were blinded by hate towards him because he didn’t rate Rizwan.

Oh for god sakes shut it. This who else bakwaaas is the reason why we have allowed Babars mediocre incompetent captaincy to persist without any accountability.

Just because there is no so called apparent successor doesn't mean you let the country suffer by allowing an incompetent leader in charge permanently.

Guys, I'm not justifying Babar's prior selection by any means. All I'm wondering is the road to the future given where the team is here and now. This point on, even when it is apparent that Babar is not a good captain, who is the good replacement?

Not justifying anything from the past just a simple question about the present and the future.

Now its a worrying sign for Pakistan that before going into the worldcup babar fully exposed his leadership skills, his decision making ability is quite a concern now.

Rizwan is more tactically astute than Babar and has more proven leadership qualities

Most of Pakistani cricketers careers end after the World Cup.

Babar's captaincy will be over at the end of the World Cup.

Will the PCB have the courage to do what the ECB did going into the 2015 ODI WC?

Doubt it

Really? Maybe they can pay for him to do his A levels and possibly a undergraduate degree somewhere?

Trust me, it will be great for him

The ECB axed their rubbish in 2014, a year before the World Cup. They then had a horrendous tournament, knowing that they will turn it all around building up to the next one at home.

It’s two different contexts. Pakistan are not in the same boat

They changed their captain Alaister Cook with Eoin Morgan just before the WC. Had it been the PCB, they would have allowed Alaister Cook lead the side to disaster in the WC and then replaced him.

There’s hardly anybody who can replace him.

I know he is a rubbish captain but we don’t have options. Rizwan maybe?

Certainly, Rizwan and Shaheen has superior leadership skills as compare to babar. However, I dont think that our management has courage to make such a bold decision just before going into the World Cup.

I find all of these guys to be on the same level. I would keep Babar as captain since he still has respect among his teammates because of his batting.

Based on tactics alone, I would say only Imad Wasim is a step above.

Since he's not an option, you continue running with Babar and work on improving the team.

That’s not true. In the PSL, Rizwan and Shaheen have proven better captains tactically

No way is he captain material. It is too close to the World Cup to change or consider anyone else for the job now. The WC is the perfect opportunity for him to shut his critics up. If he does well than will most likely continues in his job otherwise should be replaced after the tournament is over. Shaheen Afridi would be an interesting replacement.

Babar Azam's philosophy: keep playing your winning 11 until your winning 11 either loses or gets injured altogether.

In the former option it prevents any sort of grooming and will allow sides to quickly adjust and figure all 11 players out and expose their weakenesses.

In the second option itll destroy our best players and have their careers end early.

He was never captiancy material and never will be. We've had years now to see he simply doesn't have it in him.

It would be much more worthwhile to take a gamble on someone new who does demonstrate the potential to fulfill that role in the future.

I am not a fan of Babar the captain but I am a fan of consistency. He has improved somewhat as captain over the years and who knows how well he could potentially improve.

Barring a drastic drop in personal batting form, I want to see him as captain through the 2027 world cup.

Wait? How has he improved as a captain? Babar is a good bat and should have remained just that.

Since day 1 babar has adopted the same keep playing your winning 11 until that winning 11 loses or key players get injured. He kept and kept playing hasan Ali in the 2021 t20 wc despite hasan's lack of form simply because hasan Ali was a part of the team that was winning until Australia beat us. Hasan didn't contribute but because hand holding from shaheen and Rauf caused us to win the previous games hasan kept playing cause he's the winning 11.

In terms of bowling babar sticks to a formula. Never innovating. He's always caused teams to recover from a collapsed position because even though a bowler is tearing an opposition apart he'll bring on another bowler and relgate the one who was dominating the opposition to the death overs, simply because the formula can't change.

Theirs a reason both India in this Asia cup recovered from a collapsed position and Australia in 2021 t20 semi final also recovered from a collapsed position.

Lastly babar while a good batsmen is selfish caring about personal milestones. He promoted himself to t20 opening making our no 3 and no 4 extremely weak because the opening position in t20 is the position where its the most feasible to score a t20 century.

I have been supporting Babar's captaincy for the past two years. The reason is that he is our best player, regardless of the format, and he has earned immense respect within the team and throughout the cricket world for his excellence as a player. I believed he should have at least two more years to justify his position as captain and to further develop his leadership skills.

However, I can now confidently state that this guy never learns. He is a subpar captain with no presence of mind during a match. He formulates plans before the match and sticks to them, regardless of what unfolds during the game.

I have lost all my confidence in him. Rizwan took virtual control of field placements during the middle overs in the last match, and we managed to take this match down to the wire; otherwise, it would have been an easy chase for the Sri Lankans. In the final ball, when only one run was required by Sri Lanka to reach the finals, Babar seemed visibly confused. He inexplicably spread out the field, and his reasoning behind this decision remains a mystery. Any sensible captain would have brought all fielders inside the inner circle to prevent Sri Lanka from taking a single, as it was evident that they were not going for the big shot

He is not a good captain always choked in knockout matches
This WC he has last chance to prove himself otherwise he needs to be sacked from captaincy

Babar Azam Was Unable To Talk After Pakistan's Asia Cup 2023 Exit, Reveals Father.

Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka handed a two-wicket loss to Pakistan to book a final spot for themselves and eliminate the Babar Azam-led side.

Kusal Mendis' 91 and an unbeaten 49 by Charith Asalanka helped Sri Lanka edge out Pakistan by two wickets in a last-ball thriller of the Asia Cup to set up a final clash with India. Chasing a DLS revised target of 252 in the 42-overs-a-side contest in Colombo, Sri Lanka needed eight from the final over and achieved the target with Asalanka's winning hit on the last ball. A raucous home crowd rejoiced but the result broke the heart of millions of fans awaiting an India-Pakistan final in the 50-over tournament, a prelude to the upcoming ODI World Cup.

The loss also hurt the Pakistan team players, especially their skipper Babar Azam. The team captain's father Azam Siddique has revealed that Babar was not able to even speak afer Pakistan exit from Asia Cup 2023.

"Salam Pakistan. Pakistan played the whole match with half the players and lost on the last ball with a four of a flock. But in this match, I have been shown a total superstar bowler Zaman Khan, who was bowling very well even in high pressure. Win or lose game. It is a part of the team, but the team played the whole competition despite being in half," wrote Siddiqui in a post on Instagram in Urdu.

"Inshallah, when everyone is fit in the World Cup, it will be fun to see the competitions. Allah only sees what happens with intention and action from the heart. Whether he accepts it or not, He is my Lord. I think the team has sacrificed their lives. Let's encourage the team at this time and make their hearts big. This is patriotism. Long live Pakistan. (I just talked to Babar, he was not able to talk. I told him, 'Braves live or learn.' Never break), " he added.

Mohammad Hafeez speaking in a presser:

"If you don't give credit only to the captain for reaching the final, then don't blame the defeat only on the captain. Throwing blame on a single player will not solve the problem"

"Babar should be fully supported for the World Cup and think about changing the captain after the World Cup"

"We failed in the Asia Cup and we have to accept that. Only when we accept failure will we move towards improvement. There must have been mistakes in our planning as these players have been in the national side for the last two to three years"

He seems to struggle a bit in making the right calls in pressure situations but we can't change the captain just before the World Cup. His performance as the captain will be looked very closely in the upcoming World Cup and if things don't go well for team Pakistan, we may see a change of captaincy in ODI format at least.

Babar needs a couple of seniors in the side. The current lot ain’t helping him at all

Babar should have the sense to step down from Pakistan's captaincy in all formats once the WC is over. Pakistan needs his batting more than anything else.

no time to discuss these things. we all need to support our team. Remaining will discuss after WC.

Javed Miandad, Misbah ul Haq back Pakistan captain Babar Azam to perform in World Cup after Asia Cup debacle.

Pakistan legends Javed Miandad and Misbah ul Haq backed Babar Azam on Tuesday, saying the captain should not be held solely responsible for the team's poor performance in the recently concluded Asia Cup because cricket is a team sport. Speaking to the media at a match of the 40's Global Cricket Event, Miandad and Misbah both advised the country's cricket authorities not to panic.

"Why blame Babar Azam only when the rest of the team didn't perform as well in the Asia Cup matches against India and Sri Lanka," Miandad said.

Both stalwarts, who have competed in World Cups in India, advised the players not to let the prospect of competing in the mega-event in India affect them psychologically.

"Look our team is not as bad as it played in the Asia Cup. It has plenty of potential to do well in the World Cup. The only thing is how quickly our players cope and adjust to playing in Indian conditions before big crowds and in a country where they will encounter some hostility," Miandad added.
