BIRMINGHAM: The English city of Birmingham was picked on Thursday as the replacement host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, nine months after the South African city of Durban was stripped of the multisport event because of financial difficulties.

Birmingham was the only city to submit a bid by the Com*monwealth Games Federation’s deadline of the end of September.

Weeks earlier, it beat Liverpool in a head-to-head contest for British government backing for the event, which is for countries associated with the former British empire.

Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) President Louise Martin announced the decision at a press conference at Birmingham’s Arena Academy.

“We warmly congratulate Birmingham and England on today’s announcement it is a defining moment for this truly Commonwealth city,” she said.

“With its rich history, cultural diversity, youthful dynamism and ambitious spirit, Birmingham embodies all that we cherish about the Commonwealth.

“With extensive experience in the UK of hosting successful major events — including Manchester 2002, London 2012 and Glasgow 2014, the CGF looks forward to a truly spectacular games that delivers not only for the 2.4 billion citizens across the Commonwealth but the wider world, too.”

Durban was originally awarded the Games in 2015 before being stripped of the event in March because it failed to meet promises contained in its bid.

The quadrennial multisport event last took place in the United Kingdom in Glasgow in 2014. Before that, Manchester hosted in 2002.

Birmingham had to wait three months before being awarded the Games, with the CGF seeking further guarantees from the city and the government, which is financing 75 percent of the estimated budget of 750 million pounds ($1 billion).

The city’s bid was judged to be not fully compliant with all the criteria in October, leading the CGF to extending the deadline for other bidders, but no other cities came forward.

The CGF is believed to have encouraged rival bids from Canada and Malaysia, both of which failed to materialise.

But Martin thanked the two countries — and Australia — for their interest in hosting future Games and said all three countries had expressed interest in staging either the 2026 or 2030 event.

Birmingham bid organisers have said that 95 percent of the competition venues are already in place with Alexander Stadium, an established athletics venue that already stages Diamond League meets, set for an increase in capacity and facilities upgrade.

The only new venue proposed in Birmingham’s bid is the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, which will host Swimming, Para Swimming and Diving.

The city centre Victoria Square will also be used for 3x3 Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball.

“The UK has a brilliant track record for putting on the biggest sport events in the world and it is great news that Birmingham has been selected to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games,” Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said.

“I am sure that we will put on an event that will make the country proud, leave a strong sporting legacy and strengthen relationships with our friends across the Commonwealth.”

The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia from April 4.

No wonder they keep increasing council tax :mv all of a sudden the city have government backing, where was this for more pressing matters :irfan The city council will be paying 25% of the £75 million cost yet public services are extremely poor and staff is underpaid, foodbanks are bursting, council workers never get a pay rise and homelessness is rife. Then again the event will bring in a fair amount of ££££ but I doubt it will be spent well. If we overlook all those factors the city has the experience and infranstructure to stage the event, great for tourists especially loads of things to do and plenty of nice places to eat, plus you always get your value for money. Liverpool would have been a catastrophe beacuse no one would show up and it's one big landfil site full of gremlins.

Will be attending the boxing events KingKhanWC

No other city in the world (well the Commonwealth) put in a bid for this, I think that says a lot. Hosting major events is such a huge waste of money.

I don’t see why not. Sounds like a good choice.

I will be heading over to watch some of it.

Bham is nice for food but it lacks a desi Middle class. Its got a large White Middle class in Sutton Coldfield, Harbourne, parts of Edgebaston. When i go to places like Small Heath, Alum Rock etc i just see the desis as taxi drivers and restaurant owners, both these are cash businesses so the income reported is always lower than whats earnt but it doesnt create a Middle class needed for its civility and values.

People always overlook the successful business's beyond the night time economy, these guys are doing really well for themselves and earn more then a fair amount many middle class citizens.

Many stereotypes are created from 1st gen immigrants but their days are numbered , with regards to the brits there is certainly a culture amongst youngsters which revolves around crime in the inner city's but these are predominant in many places in a similar environment however over the years it's no where near as significant as it use to be, a lot of people pursue higher education like myself, apprenticeships or decent jobs in places like Jaguar Land Rover, DPD, ASDA, Tesco etc everyone starts at the bottom but many brit asians tend to find themselves in leadership positions. Class doesn't necessarily guarantee civility and values, there are many vile middle class individuals as well by no means angels.

Agreed that there are some bad Middle class people but as a general rule the Middle class is the backbone of any successful town, City or country. No country can be successful without a Middle class, they bring calmness and civility which these areas just dont have enough of. I dont deny that the desi`s have money and also there are many desi`s that are very successful but lets face it, the vast majority are totally lost in a culture of mediocrity which revolves around drugs, alochol and criminality. They talk as if they are from South Central LA and not from Bham.

Civility and values are possible irrespective of social class, those problems you state were emphatic around 10-15 years ago but things have improved from the days where I'd be afraid travelling on the bus and the city has come very far but not denying that problems do exist but not to the point where I'd say vast majority revolve around drugs, alcohol and criminality because it's a monumental and ignorant generalisation.

Which events are you interested in

They have all sorts of stuff in the Commonwealth games, sometimes weird things like rugby sevens and ten pin bowling, so probably a variety!

Sorry friend my experience of them is slightly different . As i am a person who is desperate to see our communities to be successful i see the vast majority have little to offer their families or their communities. The only way out seems to be Taxis but again you will know that those jobs are riddled with fraud with the under declaration of Income and claiming of tax credits. And before you tell me that i am picking on PK community, the Afro Caribbean is in a bigger shambles. On the other hand, the Sikh community is much more successful and it lived in the same areas but has become increasingly Middle class.

Dunno why I thought this thread would have little interest!

Your experiences are very narrow if am honest and mostly revolve around stereotypes and 1st generation immigrants, the city has made big strides to move away from them but problems will always remain to a certain degree. I've lived here all my life and still do, believe me I've seen the worst and if anyone's to hold a grudge it should be me, however I've seen improvement amongst all communities in the last 15 years.

Its good that you say things are on the up, and hopefully we have a City on a doorstep( for me) that we are proud of.

I think the new generation get overly judged based on the past and 1st gen immigrants, I know we've been through some very horrendous situations and things are not perfect at all, am just saying things are better and am hopeful things will improve moving into the future based on things I've seen with people like me and you who will guide our future children righteously to prevent the things we experienced and went through. Economic times have also been tough but am hopeful we can overcome this bad spell

Ten pin bowling! what about boxing :mv Commonwealth games have also been a decent platform to give a glimpse into the future of British Boxing

waste of time and money, the top (Jamaican) athletes don't even bother attending, the whole notion of the Commonwealth should be disbanded.

Yep me too, hoping for some young Brits to win some medals. Bham is home to the Bham Harriers athletic club which has been around for well over a 100 years and produced some excellent British athletes over the years.

Given that most commonwealth countries play that sport

Would have been a good idea, the games could have been held at Edgbaston with the development ground on Portland road being a back up.

We will see T20 cricket at one of these tournaments in the future eventually.

I can't see why not.

Birmingham certainly has the infrastructure to hold such an event.

The success of the event will depend how much enthusiasm they can generate among the local population.

Should be ok I reckon, they've held major sporting events in the past and they were all fine. Commonwealth games are a bigger draw so they should bring in more people hopefully. I checked that the Boxing will be held at Alexander Stadium

I hope so.

The weather will be a factor too but if they capture the imagination of Brummies, it will help create a great atmosphere which can be infectious. If there is a buzz the media are more likely to report on it in a more positive light.

Also, the success of local athletes would be the icing on the cake.
