Many of us would have been relieved that the heinous criminals who carried out that horrendous rape attack have been apprehended and now face the gallows.

But will this deter would be criminals in the future?

Death penalty is a deterrent but depends on the country.

It sends a message to henious criminals such as rapists and murderers, they will recieve the harshest possibly sentence if they commit such evil crimes.

Also if someone is put to death, he/she cannot harm anyone else. We dont need such people on the planet, and we dont need citizens to pay for their keep in prison for decades either.

It surely puts a bigger price on crime. But also it is a means of closure for the victims and their families.

I would assume almost all families would agree with death family for such a crime against them.

In the UK we have rapists, peados doing a few years in a nice holiday camp, otherwise known as a prison and back on the streets enjoying their life. In this regard imo UK is more of a backward nation compared to Pakistan.

One of my cousin's extended family members works very high in the justice system in Pakistan and his estimate was almost more than half of people on death row were innocent either stitched up by the police or just incompetence.

For clear cut cases like the motorway case I suppose its obvious who the criminals were.
KingKhanWC, Its a bit of myth about paedophiles enjoying life. You're on the sex offender register forever, you can't have any job due to background checks, you can't live with anyone under 18 even if its your own kids, you can't live in a neighborhood with kids as everyone would have it informed, you can't travel abroad or change address without the permission of police, you can't travel near a school or live near a school and ofcourse you risk being beaten or stabbed if you venture out and someone gets wind of it. You spend the rest of your life unable to work, unable to live where you want and unable to spend anytime with family who are under 18 and you risk being spat on and beaten or killed. This doesn't ofcourse pale in comparison to the crime they have done and the lives they have ruined, but just clarifying that its no easy ride for them either., and completely deserved too I should add after their crimes. Even prison, as cushy as it is compared to back home, spending your life in a room for decades....I mean I got crazy spending 2 weeks in quarantine more than once after my wife or relatives got covid. Imagine someone like this doing 25 years.

I ofcourse respect your opinion as its quite a polarising issue but me and you both know back home the corrupt looters have broken the justice system. We have killers like Gullu Butt and killers such Zardari, Sharif family openly roaming around and we know how corrupt the police is to even be trusted with correctly helping convict someone.

I understand your fair points. You may not believe this but peados in prison enjoy a better standard of living compared to other prisoners and even some people living at home. Did you know in the UK we have OPEN prisons for sex offenders? This means there is no bars , no walls, no wired fences, they can walk out at anytime, known as absconding to commit another crime. I think you are a referring to Sarah's Law, which has bought about these changes but should be much more stronger. Most can get jobs where no check is required and it's almost impossible to stop them re-offending the same henious crime.

I agree many corrupt criminals are walking free. Prince Andew is also someone who is enjoying life when is a suspect in one of the most high profile and sickening peadophile rings in modern history. All criminals needs to be prosecuted with harsh conditions in prison.

The real problem is most countries with capital punishment have corrupt/unjust legal systems.

Even if it is a 100% deterrent (which it isn't), the chance of multiple innocent people getting the death penalty is where things break down.

Punishments are never a deterrent, it should be for justice and in this case this would be justice. People will always commit crimes, it's just a statistical probability factoring in human nature so it's about the gravity of the crime - does it warrant rehabilitation or punishment and if it's the latter then there are different levels of punishment, the most extreme would be death.

Castration is the way to go. Chop of the thing so that it cannot be used illegally again

Not gonna work. Crimes can still be committed without “ the thing”. And needlessly chopping off body parts will create some other demons in society. Either put behind bars or go with capital punishment if crime is very offensive.
