Everyone seems to be congratulating him for scoring quick 30-50s, but Oval would require him to play a longer hand as chasing 300 will need one of our openers to do big 100 and Azhar cant be that otherwise we wont be scoring 300+. For all those who have watched him in local games, has he scored 100+ consistently? He's a navy guy so he must be fit enough to last long, but can he apply himself mentally to stay for long and make it count when it matters the most?

We donot need him to play super long innings anyway. His job has to be the Jayasuriya-Gilchrist role to gtet quick runs and give the innings acceleration./

If we really want to judge his capabilities then we should not concentrate on how he does in the final.

Let's give him a couple of games which are not a do or die game for the team in a world wide tournament and see how he does.

I am very much confident that he has it in him to score 70+ runs regularly.

I just read his interview to pakpassion.net in 2016 and the following part impressed me the most:

PakPassion.net : Last season was a superb one for you in domestic cricket. Why the sudden improvement in your batting and performances?

Fakhar Zaman : It's difficult to pinpoint one specific reason for my good form last season. However when I was selected for a Twenty20 series against England Lions for Pakistan A, I watched the England Lions training sessions closely and realised that cricket has changed and that I needed to change also. When I returned to Pakistan I changed my training methods from quantity driven to quality driven sessions. I feel that worked for me and I have reaped the rewards of that change of training style.

This shows me this guy is a very keen observer and an analyst. Instead of enjoying his trip to the UK he is paying close attention. He is a practical guy looking to improve his game.

It also shows that our players don't have any real guides to help them out and they have to be their own mentors.

I hope he keeps on working upon his game and fulfills his ambitions.

For all we know he can be out first ball.
Indian bowlers allways do their homework and would know his weaknesses and will bowl accordingly. He will have to find a way to score big.

Only a non selfish playing Babar has any chance of producing a 130 off 115 type inning- that's what Pakistan badly needs to have any chance to beat India.

I don't think he is a hack. Can score big and should look to specially if Pakistan are looking towards a big score.

He is very capable of playing a long innings hopefully his best comes against india!
#no mercy

each innings has been longer than the previous, so far.

Also each innings has included a load of mis-hit top edges which have gone for 4 or 6 because the field is in during the first 6 overs. I think 30-50 runs from him is pretty much a bonus if we get it, I don't think someone who plays so many false shots against the short ball should be expected to score big. Let's just take what we can.

thats alright...everyone though sehwag will eventually be caught at third man. didn't really happen.
the laws of the game will remain the same for the final.

After 50 runs or first ten overs, batsmen have to settle down and possess get out of jail shots to avoid building pressure and keep the scoreboard ticking. It takes time to build that skill. Nobody is born with it

Tamim iqbal was one such good example. He was a much better stroke player than him back in 2010-2012 but he would get out after first 10-15 overs and hence was not termed as big innings player. However, credit to him he worked very hard in the last couple of years on that skill and developed that ability.

Fakhar needs time to be like that

yes, he has century, but ball getting old, his strike getting slow. but here in oval i think with a bouncy pitch he get help and make big score

Yes, and the field settings work in Zaman's favour as there is very few outfield catchers during the opening overs so mis-hits aren't a big risk. He's also got some very good shots which offset his weakness against the bouncer. Fabulous cutter, and very good at rotating the strike which is a massive bonus for a Pakistan batsman.

He only knows one way to play for the time being. It is good enough for me if he gets a quick 50 instead of 100 in 35 overs. For now at least he does not have the temperament or desire to remain at the crease for a long time. I see a left handed and younger Afridi in him.

He'll play his game and unsettle the bowlers. As for his capability, he definitely has it but expecting it in the final will be a bit too much. Let's hope he can score another half century in quick succession tomorrow in shaa Allah. And if he doubles it up then Eid may come a week early!! :afridi

In total agreement with you. Having watched his batting in the last couple games, this guy is not a clean hitter of the ball like Sharjeel. When Sharjeel hits, it stays hit. Hits with such power, the fielders can do nothing but watch in despair. With Fakhar, too many mis-hits and the ball staying in the air too long. He needs to correct this for the final or he will be out too soon.

Pakistani fans were crying for someone who can take advantage of the first powerplay. Now that they have found that somebody they complaining that he is not responsible enough.

If we stopped complaining we wouldn't have any hobbies.

Well he has taken on the bowlers even if they have bowled short to him, and he has done that mostly in the powerplays where he knows there will only be one fielder out, so not taking to much of a risk. When the field is spread out he tries to avoid those shots. He could also have ducked under those deliveries in PP but would have missed valueable runs for his team.
Even Yuvraj and Ganguly faced many bouncers early in their careers but they learned with time and Fakhar will to in sha Allah.

The only thing I find strange is the way he holds the bat, looks kind of odd as if it is hampering a few scoring shots, but it is probably something wrong with my observation.

Fakhar needs to score big. I think he will get a big score and if Pakistan bats first he needs to reach three figures. Don't see any other batsman being able to score big against India.

Not complaining, just want him to do what he does a bit longer.

Sharjeel was more of a sky-hitter, Fakhar's humanish yet effective. Ashwin's single over was going to be enough for Sharjeel.

This.

I've noticed it's become a culture to just whine and moan about the team. This is his what? 3rd ODI coming up today. His aggressive batting is a god send...with experience and practice he can only get better.

+ point he's Pashtun too...so he has that Afridi passion in him.

A long Innings of at least 300 runs So he can overtake Dhawan to get golden bats

u can never satisfy the ppers :afridi

lol so true.. we're never satisfied..

same goes when sarfraz was appointed captain after azhar.. azhar was too timid.. sarfraz is over aggressive.. lol

Zaman averages over 40 in FC cricket and also has a double ton. So yeah he is capable of batting for a long time.

Doesn't need Afridi passion......
that will only destroy him....

Great day for our @lahoreqalandars boys azharAli_ and the man with the best name in world cricket Fakhar Zaman! Pakistan impressive today.

Without a century scoring 300+ will be difficult. However your assessment of Azhar is wrong as him and Babar are the only two players in the squad that have a chance of making a century. Azhar has been looking good recently and Fakher on the the other end takes the pressure off him. A 50 from Fakher will be more than satisfying

Of course he can
And what better day to start then today
Great name
I can imagine the sun newspaper cricket headline if he does and we win .lol

Sharjeel was a different class as a hitter, I think he was capable of hitting the fastest bowler in the world for six no matter where he pitched it. He picked the ball up so early it was pointless trying to bounce him out, that was just a free hit for Sharjeel.

That said, Zaman has other strengths which are superior. He's better on the offside, and he is great at picking up quick singles. I also think he is more decisive in his shot making even if he has less ability. Very dangerous opener when the field is in. India will be sweating while he is at the crease.

Has done his job. If he can score a daddy hundred or a double hundred then it will be good for the team.

Others have to step up especially golden boy.

Had a stroke of luck with the no ball but I guess he answered that - in a final against India too.

Question has been answered, take a bow son. Was a superb display in a pressure situation.

Guess being in the military helped in this regard, having high levels of concentration and resilience.

No need for that shot but brilliant innings

For a opener is he is gun player against spin bowlers. He will go on to score many 100's.
