In 2000s, all-conquering Australia developed a strong dislike from cricket fans simply for being the best. By a long way. I've long developed an affection for them since.

However, India seem to specialise in hubris. Combined with the fact that they've been losing key knockouts since winning the World Cup at home, is India the most disliked team in cricket since Australia, if not more?.

What are you basing this observation on?

Maybe India are disliked because they have done so well against Australia and are looked at with envy?

Most fans, especially England, have revelled in India's failings

Australia was disliked because of their dominance. Fans from other countries were jealous of their success. India on the other hand is disliked mostly because of its arrogant and some of their fans. :inti

I don't know about Australian team i wasn't old enough to watch them but you are spot on in terms of India being disliked due to arrogance and some of their fans.

I personally dislike India for that reason as well. They are so arrogant they act like this Indian team is the best in the history of cricket but in reality this Indian team has achieved nothing.
Not even a single damn thing.

They have only won a series in australia other than that they get beaten badly in other test nations and they haven't even won an icc tournament since 2013.

I dislike this Indian team due to their arrogance and illiteracy.

Peak Australia was feared and respected.

In comparison the current Indian side is a meme. Nobody dislikes them, they just enjoy the banter at their expense.

All teams that beat others regularly are disliked. Man United were too.

India have been no 1 in all 3 formats for better part of last decade. That is serious.

If they are disliked, they must be doing something right.

Yup. And there are two reasons for that:

- BCCI and its overbearing presence in world cricket.
- Indian fans and their arrogant chest-thumping on the internet.

They're disliked due to the bullying tactics of BCCI and their army of abusive online trolls.

Don't think anyone hates the players.

I didn’t see the great Australian side of Taylor-Waugh-Ponting as being hated.

The current Indian side is disliked by some because of Kohli’s arrogance and the hubris of their fans.

No one is suggesting the players are hated nor the country..

Agree with Man U comparison but rankings mean nothing, right?

Australia was disliked because they were too good and won nearly every game. In India case, they are disliked because of arragonce and bullying in my opinion.

This still holds true after 1 year. Australia won their 6th World Cup. :inti

Yes. I said before this WC India are the villains of cricket. It started near the turn of the century when Sachin and few others were caught for ball tampering and BCCI flexed some muscles to scare ICC off.

That was the heel turn the cricket world needed but didn’t deserve.

They’ve really come into their own as villains every few years since .

Indian team is disliked for non cricketing reasons because of the petty pathetic behavior of BCCI.

Peak Aussies were hated because they played hard, they played rough and came out on top. Indian cricketers are likeable but the problem is the board which resorts to cheap bullying like blocking DRS for long time, changing formats to help one time, pitch manipulation and treating teams they don't like as dirt.

Those who disliked Australia for their dominance, have no business following cricket. Without their dominance, Cricket would have been poorer and mediocre.

You can hate india without bringing Australia in it.

I agree with the others, no one dislikes the Indian cricket team itself.

It's a pretty talented team with likable players for the most part. But the BCCI is a major villain right now and is hated across the board for what it is doing to the sport.

Pakistan obviously dislikes the BCCI (refusing to tour for years including Asia Cup) but other teams also don't seem to have a good opinion of them. Only the Afghans seem to vibe with them.

Whether it's the pitch doctoring in the WC, forcing an Asia Cup reserve day for one game, or the influence of IPL on scheduling and player loyalty, the BCCI is maintaining its relationships solely with the force of money these days.

It's sad to say - Indian team has a massive fanbase but a siginificant chunk of that are really obnoxious and parochial.

Not fault of the India team

As fans of cricket, we shouldn't worry about the nationality of teams

Think such attitudes are changing due to popularity of franchise cricket which brings different nationalities together.

I never disliked peak Australia. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed their cricket. I am a fan of Australia cricket team since 2000.

People dislike India because of behaviors of BCCI. Also, some Indian fans are incredibly overconfident and smug.

Aussies were disliked because they were winning too much.

Australia has been a force to reckon with in world cricket. They were disliked because of their sledging stuff but there is no reason to hate any team right now. Every team should be respected. Liking and disliking should be kept purely professional and competitive.

I suppose you haven't yet heard of the absolute racist yobs that pass off as cricket fans in Australia ? Or their tendency to rely on disgracefully partisan umpires to bail them out when things went wrong ?

The dislike for India is mainly jealously of Pakistani fans who cannot accept the reality that Indian cricket has left Pakistan cricket in its dust and that Pakistan cricket will never catch up.

They also cannot come to terms with the fact that the BCCI is a billion times more powerful, richer and influential than PCB.

So this leads to jealously, jealously leads to frustration and frustration leads to hatred. This is why the happiest moment for Pakistani fans or the highlight of their cricket calendar is India losing a final or someone beating India in a series even though both India and the team that beats them is comfortably better than Pakistan.

This is what Pakistani fans have been reduced to.

Peoples dislikes Because of jealously, but when come to playing a series against India, every team and fan's are waiting to be in a queue.

Australia and Cricket Australia are exceptionally popular because they are such a morally upright nation and cricket board.

They stood up to BCCI when BCCI tried to take over the cricket world back in 2014 and did everything possible to prevent the abandonment of the associate nations.

They also made great decisions like refusing to tour Pakistan for 24 years, refusing to tour BD for security reasons and refusing to play Afghanistan for their backwardness .

Unlike the doings of the evil BCCI, I'm sure their newfound fans admired all the above moves by the great Australian nation and by CA

Nothing wrong with the Indian cricket team. They are decent guys who respect their opponents but the toxic Hindu nationalist board & government that runs the show have sunk their reputation down the drain.

You can be the richest board but you can’t buy class. The story of the BCCI.

As an Indian you would say that. Your arrogance is reviled especially when you choose so often with such riches

The Australia of yore were no less arrogant. Their players sledged everyone badly, even passing personal remarks at their opponents. The Ramnaresh Sarawan vs Glenn Mc Grath incident is a prime example. There are several others. Their fans were no less too.

I agree that some Indian fans are pretty obnoxious but I don't understand how some bright bulbs can expect perfection in a country of 1.4 billion people. Pakistani fans celebrating India's loss aren't exactly gentlemanly either.

The verdict is out. If indian fans want to be liked by pakistani fans, they need to become humble. Otherwise continue being obnoxious and disliked.

I dont think Indian cricket team is disliked at all by most subcontinental cricket fans in fact they are adored. They also mostly come across as very reasonable and cricket minded individuals.

However the BCCI is hated by most cricket fans in the subcontinent and beyond due to it flexing muscle to gain cricket advantage etc. Things like changing the pitch in a semifinal or making a slow pitch for the final will not go unnoticed.

Pakistan cricket fans do not have much hatred for the Indian cricket team. Whenever they have come to Pakistan, they have only received a warm welcome and hospitality.

Nothing has changed. If they come to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, they will receive the same amount of love as they did in previous tours to Pakistan.

Every team and fan? Where do you get that?

Cricket boards may want that (for revenue purpose). Fans are likely to follow every series.

The greatest moment for Pakistani fans in 2020 was Australia dismissing India for 36 in Adelaide.

That sums up the state of Pakistan cricket. It is pitiful.

I dont think the Indian team is particularly disliked.

Most of their players are well respected and admired. It's pretty jovial between Pakistanis and the Indian side. A sense of brotherly rivarly but also brotherly love.

However they are accelerating away from as rapidly. The days of comfort and familiarity where an Indian can be considered similar or a distant cousin are approaching.

All we Pakistanis will have left is strength and good looks. Now they have started eating meat we wont have that for long either.

When that happens then we will start to dislike them.

People who are saying India is disliked bcoz of fans have got no clue. Cricket is the only sport in India and they are a top side. So the fans sometimes gets overboard. We are a country of 1.5 billion people afterall. Also this happens across all sports...take any successful premier league team and see how fans react.

It is true that ICT is hated much more than peak Australia but the reason is or reasons are not the fans. Its an easy scapegoat for some but let me explain the real reason.

First of all no one hated Australia, rather people were in awe of thei quality. Indian team on the other hand is hated for multiple reasons -

Sub continental sides hate India bcoz Indian cricket has left them to the dust. It is a case of more of a jealousy than hatred. Given a chance every fan of Pak, BD or SL would swap their side with Indian players in a giffy.

Below are some of the celebration by Bangladeshi fans for Indian defeat. People who understands bengali would know what they are saying. They are supporting Australia, a team who never invites them to play cricket and considers sub human.

White nations like Eng and Aus hate India bcoz how dare a brown country ruling cricket. It is a colonial sport and the birth right of England to dictate terms.

Now the above two caregories of people are along the expected lines. However there is another category who hates ICT and its bit worrying.

Deshdrohis and liberal Indians also hate ICT with passion. These are the same people celebrating when Indian team lost Dubai T20 against Pakistan. and haters our team has to fight win. However patriotic Indians like us will always stand with our team, through thick and thin. I am confident we will continue to fight these naysayers, barkers and haters and will always come on top. You havent achieved anything unless people hates you, so I am glad they hate us.

3. Deshdrohis and pseudo liberal Indians also hate ICT with passion. These are the same people celebrating when Indian team lost Dubai T20 against Pakistan. These are the same people who were hiding when India was winning all their games and out in full force after the finals defeat. They view any victory of India as victory and endorsement for Modi and so they hates our team passionately. There are many Indians in various forums rejoicing our loss in finals so that Modi could not use it for his election benefit. Such is their mindset and hated.

So just imagine how many groups and haters our team has to fight win. However patriotic Indians like us will always stand with our team, through thick and thin. I am confident we will continue to fight these naysayers, barkers and haters and will always come on top. You havent achieved anything unless people hates you, so I am glad they hate us.
This is utter nonsense. This may explain a small fraction of Asian fans but does not explain vast majority of non-Indian cricket fans. Most cricket fans around the world has this sense that BCCI is involved in unfair practices to give their team an advantage.

Reports of pitch doctoring, ground choosing and throwing their weight at anything they don't like has not helped matters.

so basically everyone hates India except Afghanistan

I am a Bangladeshi and I support Aussies since 2000. It has nothing to do with this World Cup or India.

As a cricket fan, I simply like the way they play.

That notion itself is build out of jealousy rather than any substance. Just bcoz you cant beat them, conjure some conspiracy theories to feel better. India was the most travelled team and the only team to have played in all the venues in world cup. So how exactly did they choose the grounds to benefit them? Rest all theories like changing the ball, changing the pitch, toss cheating etc are laughable. This blaming BCCI for unfair practices is only among Sub Continent fans though simply bcoz they are jeslous of Indian cricket.

SENA teams simply don't like India due to racism. By SENA teams I only meant Eng and Aus here. They hold this condesending view for all Asian teams though. That is why Australia never invites BD to play cricket, give few matches to Pakistan few and far between, Jos Butler once even refused to shake hands with BD players. However they know they can treat BD, SL and Pak like door mat and can still get away with it but India is too big a fish to fry. Hence the hatred.

Hope you getting my point.

Good on you. Hope Aussies resiprocate the same love towards your team since you are supporting them since 2000 🙂

As I said there might be minority of fans who feels some sort of jealousy but majority of fans are too busy thinking about their team and India has not won anything extra recently. They have always been a top 3/4 team capable of winning things anytime. However the pitch swap in a semifinal of the WC only happens in India matches or making a wicket that un-usually dry pitch and even open admittance from harbahjan etc is a privilege for India only.

Again Nobody actually have any negativity against Indian players who are actually a very nice bunch of players with cricket orientated mindset and largely avoid anything political.
