I may be wrong but I feel he doesn't get the credit that he deserves. His batting averages are freakish.

Tests Batting Ave.: 51.52

ODIs Batting Ave.: 48.15

T20Is Batting Ave.: 37.94

No, not at all.

He was a very fine batsman within his limitations.

He was fortunate to play ODI cricket after grass had been removed from all pitches.

In terms of Tests, he averaged an astonishing 86.18 in his first 18 Tests from November 2005 (aged 30) to November 2007 (aged 32).

But in his last 61 Tests, over the following 6 years, he averaged just 43.82 - and scored three quarters of his career runs.

So, rather like Adam Voges, a superficially superb batsman is seen to be much more ordinary.

With the amount of runs he has ATG status is far away from him...with just 5k-6k runs you need bradmanesque records to be called so

Neverthless great player with terrific work-ethic he was one of the most resolute and stubborn at the wicket his sydney and T20 semi final will always haunt pakistanies i guess

Could have played from 20 in any other test nation

Top player but not an ATG. I would put him in the third or even fourth tier of recent batting greats.

Tier one: Sachin, Lara, Ponting
Tier two: Sangakkara, Dravid, Kallis, Inzi, G. Smith
Tier three: Jayawardene, Laxman, Younis, Yousuf, Sehwag, Hayden, Langer, Martyn, Pietersen, Cook, Amla, de Villiers, S. Waugh
Tier four: Hussey, Gilchrist, Ganguly, Chanderpaul, Gayle

Without an iota of doubt, if he isn't i wonder who is...played outstandingly well in the limited opportunities he had to represent his country, he was a terrific finisher only bevan and dhoni had such qualities and an absolute team man, i haven't come across a more selfless cricketer than him.

Waugh and Gilly are tier 2..

One of the best finishers of modern day cricket. A player doesn't have to be ATG to be rated. Their respective batting positions & contributions should also be looked at while making assessment.

Very adaptable batsmen. Could score runs in UAE & srilanka even when ball was turning. Excellent pressure player, equally good in all three formats & no doubts on his credentials as a finisher.

As for the point made that he was lucky for he played on little grass, what has stopped his counterparts in other countries to achieve those levels of performance if batting was this easy? & By counterpart , I mean a middle order bat not an opener/No. 3/No. 4 batsman

low away avg in tests is big question mark on his status.
14 of his 19 centuries are on home grounds

I won't call Hussey anywhere close to ATG in tests as his away record is mixed.

Can you imagine how much criticism a Pakistani or Indian player would receive on here with those kind of home/away averages. Flat track bully, awful technique, you name it, we'd say it but because he's not an Asian batsman we've got people debating whether he's one of the greatest to ever play the game :))

No

Not even an Australian ATG

But he would have been

He made his debut after he was 30. Ofcourse people use same logic for Ryan Harris that if he had played earlier he would have been an ATG too.

But the major and important difference is that there is no reason to suggest that Ryan Harris in his 20s was anywhere near the complete bower who would have succeeded. And his domestic record reflected that.

However Hussey had been in the top run getters in both Sheffield and County cricket for several years before his eventual debut. Every year I remember reading about him dominating the county scene (didn't follow Sheffield shield)

I genuinely think Australia missed a huge truck with not giving him a debut earlier. And I just cannot understand why.

Most of the numbers which weaken his record were made at an age when a cricketer declines

Hussey didn't play much integration so cricket st all in his peak years even though he was ready for it

Who would he replace?

Slog I watched a lot of Hussey before his debut because he played for WA.

He wasn't good enough to play for Australia for most of his 20s and every summer played for WA and then did okay (average low 40s but nothing compared to Langer, Hayden etc).

He was a good shield player but every side has those batsmen.

What's this obsession for declaring or not everyone with this title . Hope players are anot charged for this ATG "degree " from here.

Overrated on here because of the 2010 World Cup semi final knock.

They picked him a bit too late

Mr Cricket is not a slave to social perceptions and doesn't care about your arbitrary standards and yardsticks that couch warriors love to judge with.

Hussey would be considered savior of Australian cricket had he playing right now

They picked him a bit too late

Post #19 bro, there seems to be always this argument when players who come in late and perform that they should had been selected early, but they might not have been the same batsman then.

It's all speculation, there are for and against arguments we'll never know for sure. But am of the view that when a high calibre talent is scouted and invested in at a early stage their development is fast tracked.

Nope. He's not one. A good player, not dissimilar to Misbah.

in Asia, he would be equivalent of three aussie batsmen right now

When you look at rubbish batsman overrated to the moon like Misbah then yes in relative terms with PP propaganda he is an ATG...
