Do you find that apart from above which is fake or badly messed up news, there is far too much negativity?

Also today some site claiming Queen has tested positive and also posting a statement from the Palace also!

How low can they get?

Too much drama and sensation from the media.

Here in the netherlands everything is full with corona. Huge headlines etc.

They hardly give any usefull info.

But reporting IK or Queen with Covid 19 is another level of low! How can they get away with it?

Media needs to be responsible. No fake news please.

Truthfulness is more important than rating/profit.

There is too much negativity in the media. This needs to be a team effort. They need to increase the ads on how to protect oneself from getting infected and whats the nature of the virus instead of political point scoring. They also need to stop dramatizing the whole thing.

Half are saying (mostly our Pak pseudo journalists and analysts on their utube channels) tomorrow is the end of world while the other half are saying tomorrow is the end of corona....

so... panic and stupidity... and oh yeah dont forget the conspiracy mafia as well, all 5 in ghee these days...

This isn’t even the most frustrating part. I made a mistake of watching ARY for a couple of days and for most part, I could only see religious scholars advising people on the issues around Coronavirus. With all due respect to religious scholars, I don’t think it’s their area of expertise. We need more people from healthcare sector on tv right now and the fact that that’s not happening worries me a lot.

BBC and Sky News have the worst agendas

They are responsible for a UK economy collapse

Every news channel has an agenda. Each and every one of them.

Every government is lying about infected and death numbers.
Chinese have been lying from the start. Americans and the EU countries decided to not test people and should be criminally charged.

I believe, right now, economy shouldn't be the priority. They should have thought about the economy in January, right now it's a damage control situation.

Media is making big money in all this chaos by using sensationalism, and dirty coverage.

The media has been really irresponsible but not only them but all the experts and science/medical establishment have been feeding fear, hysteria and hyperbole.

Lets not forget bots on twitter claiming to be actual people that had relatives get or die from the disease and then they all end their posts with the same warning "Covid 19 is real!!! Becareful! Even if you're young! You can get it and die!!" Like anybody that's been on social media for awhile can tell which accounts are run by bots and shills lol, they're just part of this whole fear campaign.

Depends where you go. In alt-right sites (Alex Jones and other psychos): it's all a fake campaign to halt Trump.

Leftists are the complete opposite and if you go by their pov: the world is about to end.

Governments are lying. Bill Gates want everything to remain close for at least 10 weeks.

No one knows what's the truth anymore :yk

Truth is, there is a virus that we should stay safe from but this entire lockdown and constant fear and paranoia is fear driven, the media and experts keeping out saying "80% of people" will get infected and "MILLIONs will DIE!!!" and the economy is going to be worse than in 2008, they aren't helping this situation with all this fearmongering and that is their goal - paralyze society with fear.

Fear weakens the immunity system plus it's late flu season and allergy season all started, there are so many factors at play.

Here in US fox news started with narrative it's a hoax, to it will go away soon no big deal democrats blowing it out of proportions, to now grandparents willing to die to save US economy. Mind you, the average age of fox news viewer is like 65...

Well the fact remains that we will be giving up a lot of our freedoms for big government, Snowden recently said that all of the freedoms and right we will be giving up will likely never come back. People want a big brother/nanny state because they're scared shitless and believe that an authoritarian approach is the only solution and that might have some merit to it but it isn't good for the long run.

True. If I was scared I would agree to a lot of things

The situation is such that if hypothetically govts in West claim that every single person will have to wear an ankle bracelet going forward, so that in case such viruses attack in future, we will know who was in what location exactly, I can guarantee 75% of people will happily agree with it

On another note, the concept of locking up healthy people in their homes as a precaution has become normalized.

In future if God forbid we see bad attacks carried out by members of an ethnic group or religion, I can imagine govts asking all other members of that religion to not step outside. It will be painted as "for the greater good", but I can imagine Imams asking Muslims to stay in their homes for days, in case its Muslims who are carried out the attacks.

And the majority of people will want Muslims to comply with the attitude that "if everyone was locked up because of a virus whats wrong with 5% of the population being locked up to save lives"

I agree that its now a time for damage control. But poor nations doesnt have much buffer to work with.

Once this epidemic calms, theres another monster which will born.... An economic collapse and the damage will continue where many people will commit suicide or starved to death.

Downing Street’s anti-fake news unit is dealing with up to 10 cases of misinformation about coronavirus a day as it emerged some articles are getting more views than all of those posted by the NHS put together.

Oliver Dowden, the culture and digital secretary, said the government’s new rapid response unit was looking at removing “falsehoods and rumours” about the illness that could cost lives and was trying to clamp down on phishing scams.

An article on the website WND.com that claims a US doctor cured hundreds of patients of coronavirus, despite the fact the information in the piece contradicts official guidance, received more than 160,000 Facebook engagements by UK users in a 24-hour period.

According to research carried out by NewsGuard, this was more than all of the NHS website engagements received from Facebook and Twitter during the past 30 days.

The article on the doctor, who claimed to cure people with an anti-malarial drug and zinc, was one of the top five most shared articles on Covid-19 in the UK last week.

Dowden said: “We need people to follow expert medical advice and stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives. It is vital that this message hits home and that misinformation and disinformation which undermines it is knocked down quickly. We’re working with social media companies, and I’ll be pressing them this week for further action to stem the spread of falsehoods and rumours which could cost lives.”

When false narratives are identified online or on social media, the government’s rapid response unit coordinates with departments across Whitehall to find a way to tackle the content if it cannot be taken down. This can include a direct rebuttal on social media and ensuring public health campaigns are promoted through reliable sources.

The unit is one of the teams feeding into the wider “counter-disinformation cell” led by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, made up of experts from across government and the tech sector.

Dowden will be contacting social media companies again this week to discuss what other measures could be put in place to ensure accurate, honest information consistently reaches users of their platforms.

Penny Mordaunt, the paymaster general, said: “Holding your breath for 10 seconds is not a test for coronavirus and gargling water for 15 seconds is not a cure – this is the kind of false advice we have seen coming from sources claiming to be medical experts.

“That is why government communicators are working in tandem with health bodies to promote official medical advice … but the public can also help with this effort, so today we implore them to take some simple steps before sharing information online, such as always reading beyond the headline and scrutinising the source.”

Among the examples the rebuttal unit has investigated is a fake text sent after the UK government sent a message to the public about staying at home. The second false text message in circulation claimed that some people had already been fined.

A series of scams purporting to be from HMRC offering tax refunds also appeared online, including doctored screenshots of official government website Gov.uk.

The unit asked the telecoms industry to block offending text message aggregators and requested removal of malicious content from internet providers. HMRC digital teams also used social media to alert the public about the scam.

WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts widely circulated since the outbreak began include false medical advice claiming to be from “Stanford Hospital Board”. This advice included drinking or gargling water to “wash the virus down into the stomach, where acid could kill it”.

The unit asked the Department of Health and Social Care to create and share posts on Facebook and Twitter to rebut false medical advice and direct the public to official guidance.

APNS seeks relief package from government

ISLAMABAD—All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) has appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan for a relief package for the survival of a free print media.

Ads on the front and back pages of mainstream newspapers say that the PTI government has announced a package for businesses affected by COVID-19. “We, as the representative body of the print media, invite your kind attention to the national emergency faced by the free press, which is the fourth pillar of Pakistani democracy.”

APNS said the Ministry of Information “should make special monthly allocations of Rs1 billion per month for the next 3 months for print advertising that highlights public health awareness about the coronavirus…”

It also demanded that the federal government along with the Punjab and Khyber Pakthtunkhwa governments should “clear pending payments on account of the long outstanding advertising dues owed by the government to the print media so that these may be disbursed by us against outstanding wage payments due to newspaper employees.”

APNS asked for a 100 percent increase in advertising rates. “This overdue increase would still place government advertising rates at less than half of those paid by commercial advertisers.”

It asked the government to reduce NEPRA’s tariff for the provision of electricity to newspaper premises and presses by 50 percent and “FBR should be advised to exempt the 1.5% withholding tax on newspapers for the current fiscal year.”

These are not mistakes- Geo is a mafia front and wants to create misinformation and panic so that govt is overthrown and they get MSR out and govt ad money. This is disgusting and IK should shut it down. Enough is enough

This is not a free press, its a press run for the benefit of the mafia and as such it needs to get its funds from the mafia. IK should tell these crooks to get lost and not give a penny. DAWN should get its funds from the Foreign agencies it works for.

Facebook and Twitter have deleted posts from world leaders for spreading misinformation about the coronavirus.

Facebook deleted a video from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro that claimed hydroxychloroquine was totally effective in treating the virus.

He has repeatedly downplayed the virus and encouraged Brazilians to ignore medical advice on social distancing.

It follows Twitter’s deletion of a homemade treatment tweeted by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Both social networks rarely interfere with messages from world leaders, even when they are verifiably untrue.

Twitter, for example, says it will “will err on the side of leaving the content up” when world leaders break the rules, citing the public interest.

But all major social networks are under pressure to combat misinformation surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

Twitter has updated its guidance on combating medical misinformation that goes against international public health guidance.

And Facebook has similarly committed to removing information that could cause physical harm.

President Bolsonaro’s posts showed him talking to people in the streets of Taguatinga.

Facebook said it had removed the video from both that site and Instagram, which it also owns. The posts violated its community standards for causing harm, it told BBC News.

Follow-up statements issued to Buzzfeed and The Verge clarified the claim about hydroxychloroquine was the main reason for its deletion.

The World Health Organization says while some drug cocktails may have an impact, there is no proven drug treatment.

And hydroxychloroquine and a related compound, chloroquine, are unproven, experimental treatments.

But despite the lack of clinical trials, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now approved both compounds, listed as anti-malarial drugs, for “emergency use” in Covid-19 patients admitted to hospital.

The potential for possible treatment outweighed the known risk, the FDA said.

But US President Donald Trump promoted the idea of hydroxychloroquine as an effective cure last week, before the FDA’s move.

And his personal lawyer, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, had a tweet deleted for claiming it was “100% effective” in treating the virus.

He had been quoting another President Trump supporter, Charlie Kirk, whose tweets were also deleted.

In the UK, a “rapid response unit” within the Cabinet Office has been established to work with the social networks to remove fake news and harmful content.

Honestly for the sake of the nation's health all private channels need to be shut down. This is time of war and emergency measures need to be taken. These pathetic journalists were kissing IK's feet for bailout and when they were denied they are running a smear campaign and hoping against hope that corona spreads like fire in Pakistan.

Buckingham Palace did not say the Queen tested positive for coronavirus

Multiple news reports circulating in Nigeria claim that Buckingham Palace has announced Britain’s Queen Elizabeth tested positive for COVID-19. Although the Queen’s eldest son was diagnosed with the disease, the Palace said the monarch herself is “in good health”.

“Royal Palace confirms Queen Elizabeth tests positive for coronavirus,” reads the headline on an article shared more than 1,500 times on Facebook since it was posted on March 28.

AFP found dozens more reports from news sites, mostly based in Nigeria, that published the claims. We’ve archived some of them here, here and here.

A report from Nigerian site Bluenews published the claims alongside a doctored picture of the British monarch wearing a face mask.

“Her Majesty the Queen of England has tested positive to Coronavirus, although she’s show (sic) no symptoms of weakness at the moment as we hear she’s in good Condition!” the article reads.

AFP ran a reverse image search and traced the original version of the photo to an article by The Daily Mail newspaper on the Queen attending church on Christmas Day in 2017.

Royal officials announced on March 30 that the Queen’s eldest son and heir, Prince Charles, was no longer in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.

Concerns were also raised for the health of the 93-year-old monarch after Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson also tested positive for the disease.

But Buckingham Palace has made no announcement that the Queen herself has been diagnosed with the disease.

On March 27, a Palace spokesman said the Queen “remains in good health” and was “following all the appropriate advice with regards to her welfare”.

The Queen has been staying with her 98-year-old husband Prince Philip at Windsor Castle in southeast England since March 19.

AFP previously debunked false reports that the Pope tested positive for COVID-19.

A misleading voice note about the response to coronavirus circulating on WhatsApp has been called “fake news” by Public Health England.

The panicked voice note is by a woman who claims she works for “Secas” – the South East Coast Ambulance Service and is sharing inside information that “comes from Public Health England”. She goes on to suggest that further restrictions on movement are imminent and that a huge proportion of the people dying of coronavirus are healthy and young.

Secas said that “the alarmist information being shared in the message is not correct”.

Prof Viv Bennett, chief nurse at Public Health England (PHE), told BBC News: “This is fake news, and we would urge people to ignore the message and not share it further.”

It’s difficult to tell how far the note has spread, but on Wednesday dozens of people have sent the note to BBC reporters, and Secas and PHE have both fielded numerous calls, indicating that the message is going viral on WhatsApp’s network.

So many media personnel but this guy somehow manages to always have the most useless and pointless tweets. It's a special talent.

A media monitoring and research body on Wednesday urged Pakistani TV channels to stop politicising the coronavirus and be responsible in covering the impact of the pandemic in the country.

"Uks has monitored a new spate of war on the media and barring a few, most of the TV talk shows are busy in pitting a province against the other or Centre against a province," read a statement from the body.

The Uks mentioned that it had noted how guests from various political parties are invited to talk shows and then, discussions on COVID-19 are 'tailored'.

"This is incredibly bad for outbreak control – it can drive our public away from acquiring information on prevention and updates to fall for who’s right and who’s wrong," it said, adding that the debate on social media had been mostly racist, sexist, ethnic and sectarian.

Keeping in mind the fact that talk shows are driven by politics, the Uks made three appeals to media practitioners, the public and advertisers. It urged media practitioners to refrain from taking up issues with a "premeditated agenda of political score setting" and avoid calling guests who will indulge in political arguments.

It called on advertisers to be more responsible and not support content that incites the public, hinges on hate speech and creates national and regional divisions. "Losing a little money is better than losing human lives," read the statement.

The Uks called on the public to ignore mundane political debates and instead, demand reports from professionals in infectious diseases. "Although the numbers are of interest to you, it’s also important for you to see the story behind the numbers, of success stories, of best practices," it said.

The remarks from the Uks came after coronavirus cases in Pakistan crossed the 6,000 mark and more than 100 deaths were reported in the country. Globally, more than 2 million people have been affected by the virus and an estimated 120,000 have died from the infection.

The Sindh government and centre have been trading barbs over the past couple of weeks on measures being undertaken across the country to tackle the novel coronavirus.

While the provincial government thinks the centre should take strict measures and has called for a complete lockdown across the country, the federal government insists on refraining from a complete lockdown so that the daily wage earners can survive during the pandemic.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Friday some sections of the media were not doing journalism on the basis of facts.

Speaking to a group of owners of private YouTube channels and social media activists at the Prime Minister Office, he highlighted how some media houses and anchorpersons had flourished with the passage of time and how others were wiped out, a source privy to the meeting told Dawn.

When some participants of the meeting told the prime minister that they had blocked many “fake” news items of formal media, the prime minister said that those who did not do journalism on the basis of facts vanished from the market while those who did factual reporting survived.

He said there were many credible journalists and anchorpersons in the media who always did responsible journalism.

Later, at a press conference Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the government had devised a new media policy under which a due role would be given to social and digital media.

She said Prime Minister Khan encouraged youth to open their YouTube channels so that they could earn by themselves.

The SAPM said a special quota of advertisement was being allocated for the digital media and YouTube channels would be registered with the Press Information Department (PID).

She said owners and reporters of digital media would be given accreditation cards by the PID.

Islamabad, Pakistan - At least 30 journalists have tested positive for the coronavirus in southwest Pakistan, taking the total number of journalists infected across the country to more than 50, data from an independent media watchdog shows, as the South Asian nation continues to ease its lockdown amid a spike in cases and deaths.

At least 54 journalists and media workers have tested positive for the coronavirus across Pakistan, according to data released by the Freedom Network rights group on Monday, indicating that news organisations' guidelines for journalists were either being ignored or needed better enforcement.

"I was in the office and my body felt like I had a fever, and I felt really dizzy," said Salman Ashraf, a reporter for local television station Geo News in the southwest city of Quetta. Ashraf was one of the first journalists to test positive for the virus in the country.

"I left the office before my shift ended. When I returned home […] it was very difficult," he told Al Jazeera by telephone. "I had a high fever, and a lot of body pain. I couldn't stand up."

Ashraf was one of seven people to test positive for the coronavirus in his organisation's Quetta bureau. The data shows a similar pattern of clusters of coronavirus cases in newsrooms and bureaus across the country, where journalists, technical staff and media assistants often work in close proximity to each other.

The number of infections in the South Asian nation began spiking last week, with several consecutive days of record increases in new infections and deaths. On Sunday, reported infections rose by a further 1,476 to 30,941, with at least 667 deaths and 8,212 patients having recovered.

On Monday, provinces began implementing a government-mandated easing of lockdown measures, with smaller markets and several industries allowed to reopen for up to five days a week, operating from sunrise until 5pm each day.

Prime Minister Imran Khan's government has insisted that a full lockdown is not economically sustainable for a country that was already in the midst of an economic crisis when its outbreak began in late February.

Last month, the International Monetary Fund estimated that Pakistan's economy would contract by 1.5 percent owing to the coronavirus-related lockdowns, close to the worst such figures since the country gained independence in 1947.

Khan has insisted industries be required to follow government-mandated standard operating procedures to keep workers safe, or face being closed down again.

'Not taking it seriously'

For journalists working across the country, individual news organisations have issued guidelines regarding social distancing and protective equipment while reporting, but implementation on the ground has been inconsistent.

"We are going into the field in the same way," said one journalist in Quetta, speaking on condition of anonymity fearing reprisals from his employer. "We are working in the same way, in the field and in the office. We are contacting the public in the same way."

The journalist said guidelines were in place but were not being enforced or followed by many journalists. Competition in Pakistan's news media landscape is cut-throat, with more than 30 24-hour television news channels competing with each other for ratings, in addition to dozens of national and regional newspapers.

"The general behaviour that we are seeing, I am mentally prepared that I am going to get the virus. And I do not feel like I can save myself from this."

Syed Shahzad Kazmi, a cameraman for the local Roze News television station in the northwestern city of Peshawar, said he was reporting live from hospitals and public bazaars days before he became ill.

"[News organisations] are not taking it as seriously as it should be," he told Al Jazeera. "Their performance is zero on this front [and] they are not protecting the journalists."

Kazmi tested positive for the coronavirus late last month, spending two weeks in quarantine at home before being certified as having recovered by health authorities.

Asad Ali, a cameraman for the Gourmet News Network in Peshawar, tested positive for the coronavirus after being infected by a co-worker at his organisation's bureau.

After spending two weeks in quarantine, he said he was back at work on the night shift, working as normal.

"The TV channels, in particular, have come up with COVID19 protocols, listing all the precautions that journalists need to take," said Iqbal Khattak, representative for the global media rights group Reporters Without Borders in Pakistan. "The protocol is quite good, but still I think the protocol needs some [additional] steps."

RSF's recommendations to Pakistani news organisations include no longer requiring television reporters to report live from places with large crowds, restricting coverage of press conferences where large numbers may gather and avoiding commissioning reports from hospitals.

"I was just watching the 3pm bulletin [on television] ... and these journalists were all on the streets, close to the public," said Khattak. "This is a worrying sign. […] Getting live hits from the field is a risk that they are taking and I think media houses should avoid taking these risks."

This is amazing

So Express Tribune and Dawn published articles today implying that the govt. is using the Corona Relief Fund to pay off interest on loans.

Whereas the reality is that they are paying Rs.10bn and the Corona Relief Fund accumulated around Rs.3bn in all...

The amount being used to pay off the interest was from the Rs.1.2tn economic relief package, which was for various purposes. A non-story turned into sensationalism.

The media was responsible for adding fuel to the panic fire in most parts of the world. Here in Australia, in the first few weeks of lockdown/panic buying news outlets would "inform" viewers of the goods that were in short supply and 'what they should stock up on'.

Always used to think Pakistani media has a thing for adding Mirch Masala to everything but English media in U.S., UK, Aus are at par, if not ahead of us - inviting 'protestors against Fascism' onto their channels for 'important debates'.

Even Urdu has been destroyed by these ARY and other channels' anchors. Furthermore, they have zero awareness or respect when delivering news these days. Heck, you're delivering news about hundreds of people who've lost their lives in a global pandemic, at least have some respect when announcing that rather than using slang and informal terms.

From what little I have seen of the Pak and Indian media, its all scaremongering, irresponsible broadcasting and from India, a whole load of Islamophobia.

In the UK, the BBC and Sky have their usual agendas BUT there has been some exceptional, I mean truly, once in a decade type reporting and investigative journalism from the likes of The Guardian, FT, ST and a few other outlets. They have laid bare the government's failings and Boris' deceit. I just hope enough people read about it.

The only role MSM has played is creating fear and panic among the people.

Graphs, surge, deaths , peak etc etc all day 24/7.

Just take Pakistan as an example each single day about 8.000 people die but never seen a graph on that.

What is the number for covid 19 deaths per day so far?

The answer to the question is an Emphatic NO.

The media is equally responsible for the millions of lives ruined due to mental health and financial loss because of this pandemic.

Have to admit - the media have really done well to redeem themselves during the crisis.

Spoke too soon!

KARACHI: The government of Sindh has warned masses against spreading fake news and propaganda related to coronavirus vaccines on social media, saying that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.

The minister was speaking to journalist Shahzad Iqbal during the Geo News programme Naya Pakistan where he spoke about the pandemic.

He revealed that the coronavirus task force meeting will meet today (Sunday) to review the coronavirus statistics in the province.

The minister spoke about Karachi traders' demands, adding that if the coronavirus positivity rate drops in Sindh, the provincial government will accept their demands.

"This is to inform that markets in #Sindh will remain open till 8 PM," the provincial government's spokesperson, Senator Murtaza Wahab, said on Twitter.

"It is again expected from the market associations, shop owners and citizens that due regard to SOPs shall be observed & everyone including the shopkeeper and visitor shall wear a mask," Wahab added.

'Shops will remain closed once a week'

In a conversation with Geo News, Sindh information minister Nasir Hussain Shah had said that shops will only close once a week (Sunday) and will remain open on Friday.

He had said that the government will see to the enforcement of all directives issued by the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC).

Traders, merchants put forth demands
Earlier, Karachi's businesspeople had demanded the Sindh government allow their shops to open at 10am and conclude daily operations at 8pm after new restrictions were announced to curb the rising coronavirus cases.

The merchants' demands were announced Thursday during a joint press conference by the Karachi Electronics Dealers Association, Sindh Tajir Ittehad, and other traders' bodies of the metropolis.
