One of the most underrated players on PP, known for his ability to score under pressure and to tough it out in difficult situations. His battle with Ambrose is test match cricket at it's best. Lead a truly great team as well. Literally know for scoring under pressure by his teammates and by the opposition.

Not saying he is the best test match batsmen ever but is Steve Waugh the best test batter in a pressure situation?

Not the best because his 3rd/4th inning average is pretty ordinary.

I think even Langer and Gilchrist were more clutch than him in tests.

The ATG Australian side had most games won by the 4th innings so he may not have had a chance to bat a substantial amount of time in the 4th innings, also I was watching a programme about Waugh and someone said he rarely scored when his team was Australia were on top it would be when Australia were struggling would he come into his zone.

Furthermore there might have been times in the 2nd innings where he got Australia to match winning positions. Batting in the 4th innings isn't always a clutch time to bat as the game could be over as a I mentioned above.

A very gritty and tough cricketer without any shadow of doubt.

Forget just Tests. He was a clutch cricketer. Look at his knock in the 1999 World Cup game against SA. That knock is as clutch as it gets

he was a better batsman than ponting and sachin in tests, when it comes to character, guts and determination

Ian Chappell,Javed Miandad,Alan Border ,Rahul Dravid and Younis Khanin recent times would be right there with Steve Waugh.Ian Chappell was better than even Viv Richards, brother Greg or Gavaskar when the chips were down.He overshadowed every batting great of his time in his era.Similarly Miandad and Border were a greter scorge in the eyes of opponents in a crisis. From the 1990's Steve Waugh and Rahul Dravid took over. They retrieved a sinking ship better than Lara,Tendulkar or Ponting.Younis in a crisis is very close to Miandad. In 4th inings V.V.S.Laxman was class act.

His bowling side was so good that he hardly needed to bat in the last innings.

Anyway it was AB for me, because he was in poor sides facing better attacks - Windies, Imran and Wasim, Hadlee, Willis and Botham.

i too rate Border above Waugh. Waugh was always the fighter , i was quite impressive the way he bowled in 1987 WC final. Phil DeFreitas was turning the match towards England but Waugh held his nerve and got him.
