Welcome to NEW PAKISTAN!

Before the elections, every political party (except PTI), every foreign newspaper and every independent journalist had concluded that The Aliens, Khalai Makhluk, Agriculture Department, Miltablishment, Whatever, had conclusively pre-rigged the elections in an unprecedented manner. A day after the elections, every political party (except PTI), every foreign newspaper and every independent journalist has confirmed the finding. Before the elections, the Miltablishment, Supreme Court and Media were on trial. After the elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan has joined them in the dock.

The ECP claims that “the Remote Transmission System (RTS) broke down, hence the announcement of results was delayed by a few hours.” Was the RTS deliberately glitched because the Agriculture Department panicked when the opposition began to weigh in and something had to be done to get things back on track? Even if it was an unforeseen breakdown, this does not explain why the polling agents were kicked out while the votes were being tabulated or why such lengthy delays ensued.

In the next year or so, we should expect scores of petitions to be filed wherever the margin of PTI’s victory is less than 10,000 or thereabouts. Thousands of bags will be opened and hundreds of thousands of ballots recounted and thumbprints matched. Thousands of Form 45 will be scrutinized. But none of this huffing and puffing will bring Imran Khan’s house down because he is protected and propped up by the Miltablishment.

Imran Khan will be Prime Minister, he will choose the next President of Pakistan and the PTI will rule in Islamabad, KP and possibly even in Punjab while mounting stiff opposition to the PPP in Sindh. Why was such a sweeping victory required of it? What should we expect in the new Pakistan?

To be fair, Imran Khan cannot be denied his fair share of the voter, especially among the new youth, urbanising white-collar middle-class and rich. His prospects became brighter after he started to enroll “electables” regardless of the colour of their money or character. Equally, the PMLN, whatever its self-righteous claims or principles, was well and truly on a suicidal path. But electoral engineering on such a large scale was still necessary to provide legitimacy for a constitutional and political overhaul. What’s on the cards?

A State of Emergency could be imposed under the garb of financial necessity pinned to the alleged misdeeds of the previous regimes. The numbers in parliament will not be too difficult to get. Such an Emergency would restrict fundamental rights and pave the way for a witch hunt of political and media opponents in order to satisfy the bloodlust of the winners (IK has said he won’t do that), protect them from any potential buffeting by a disgruntled opposition and detract criticism from unpopular policy decisions or incompetent and corrupt mismanagement. If that happens, we should expect NAB, FIA, FBR and IB to get hyper active after all state institutions are brought on the same page.

The constitution may also be targeted for amendment. The 18th Amendment, for starters, has become irksome because it shaves the federal pool — which is required to pay for increasing defense expenditures and pensions— by devolving financial resources to the provinces. A need may also be felt to reduce the size and strength of Punjab in the scheme of things, especially since the development of a critical fissure in the historical pro-Miltablishment character of the province. Plans remain on the anvil to carve it up into three or more “units” that are politically more “manageable”.

But the “new dream team” that is lining up to run the “new Pakistan” will not find it easy going. The economy needs more than a shot in the arm. Hard times are upon us and the very middle-classes and rich that have catapulted Imran Khan to office will have to pay the price of their convictions. The value of their rupee is going to fall, so their everyday needs will become expensive; they will have to pay more indirect taxes and duties; and IMF structural reforms will dampen infrastructural growth and employment. This will give grist to the opposition, media and judiciary to stand up and create hurdles in his path.

Admittedly, the Miltablishment has stitched up an extraordinary political dispensation in difficult times. But, unlike Nawaz, the person they have chosen to lead it is strong-willed and unpredictable. In fact, Nawaz was eminently pliant. Yet, after a while, he felt compelled, given the nature of power, to try and be his own man. But this was unacceptable and he had to pay the price for even thinking such rash thoughts. Imran Khan, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish. He may have embraced the Miltablishment as a tactical move but sooner rather than later he will begin to challenge the conventional wisdom of the national security state handed down to him. That’s when all bets will be off.

Meanwhile, let us not spoil their honeymoon with grudging digs and pin ******.

I don't see Najam Sethi surviving this. Guess he knows aswell that the writing is on the wall

Hopefully we don't ever see him again

It'll be sad to see him go. He has genuinely been a good chairman and PSL is definitely his brainchild.

Poor stuff from Sethi instead of giving him a call to congratulate him, he has to fuel his agenda. Sour grapes from a guy with a very shady past himself! For those who aren't aware, he tried to destabilise the country with what he was doing in Baluchistan.

This is why he cannot be trusted with any governing function and this was shown by his handling of Sharjeel who was banned despite any reasonable evidence. As PSL's main man, he felt the need to do this to feed his ego.

I acknowledge he's served Pakistan cricket well in some aspects such as PSL and bringing cricket back to Pakistan however he has done little to improve the infrastructure, domestic and grassroots. These hold the foundations of Pakistan's cricketing future and we cannot solely rely on raw talent from a broken system to change our fortunes.

Perhaps under a new establishment we can see the return of Sharjeel and if he can retain fitness and find form, Pakistan will need his services opening with Fakhar for next year's world cup.

We may also see PCB become depoliticised and finally independent as well.

But but sethi is the best thing since slice of bread.csnt wait for this corrupt person to get lost.

haha no more foreign trips for him and his family on pcb expense .
now pcb will become more transparent
and who knows the the new chairman may outperform him.
so guys there is no need to feel let down by the departure of this political pawn.

IK has some good plans. The changes will be about improving Pak domestic, making life of domestic cricketers better. That's what we needed, right?

Also as long as Mickey is there Pak is good till WC 2019.

Him and his wife have been called up by the FBR to show their assets and wealth in the last six years. Goodbye Sethi. :))

Lets see if IK lives up to his promise of no political victimization

Sacking Sethi for this article wouldn't be political victimization. I see no reason for the head of the PCB to comment on the PM of this country.

Despite people having there opinions about him, he still managed to do a good job specially with PSL.

The head of the PCB is also a journalist by profession.

I am not a fan of Sethi but PCB should not be a priority at this point for a new govt. But on the other hand,Sethi wanted to go in a blaze of glory, and this article shows it-A very bitter article

Savak, show me the head of the CA questioning a politician, the head of the BCCI saying something about Modi or Congress, the head of ECB saying something about Theresa May, the head of South African board talking about the state of South African politcs.....

Hell, show me the head of ZCB talking about Mugabe.

The sole reason why Pakistan can't move ahead....people putting themselves and their agendas ahead of anything and everything.

Which is a conflict of interest anyway. When he's working as the head of the PCB, that's all he should focus on.

He gave us his program on GEO news to dedicate himself to the PCB Chairmanship

Najam Sethi is the definition of "chotay log"

He’s been better than previous Chairmen but what a tasteless way to go.

As they say, The Ego is the Enemy.

Funny thing for him that PM Imran Khan (Nice to say that :))) ) would have found it hard to sack him because he wasn't doing that badly. Now he's given him the easiest excuse to sack him.

But still wrote this article..... which is in conflict with his role

And many other articles too.

As I have written in another thread, if Najam Sethi wishes to depoliticise the PCB and ensure it is an independent organisation, then he should practice what he preaches.

How does he justify writing (very opinionated) political articles and posting political tweets (using the same account as his cricket one) whilst being the Chairman of the PCB?

Not only is it unprofessional it is also a conflict of interest- he should pick a role and commit to it. This double hatting reeks of hypocrisy.

If he keeps his opinions to himself then there isn't a problem. By broadcasting his (controversial) views so publicly he puts himself in a compromised position and it also undermines the PCB's independence. And then he has the audacity to ask for stability in the PCB?

Imran has bigger fish to fry as PM but it seems Sethi is spoiling for a fight.

Knowing Imran Khan through some of his close aides as well as watching him over the years, one thing he will absolutely not compromise on is building institutions! That is what he believes in . . Regardless of what he does as PM (when he gets elected), one things for sure, he is going to try his best to fix our state institutions and PCB is one of them . .

Now coming to this post . . See, until yesterday, I was off the opinion that Najam Sethi has arguably done good work while being at the helm of the PCB and has been appreciated from many quarters! and hence, I was hoping that he would congratulate the PTI for winning the elections, congratulate IK on becoming the PM (and hence the Patron of the board), put the past behind and start dialogue on how to make PCB an institution that is independent and does not have any political interference!

. . . . . and that did not happen!! In fact, quite the opposite . .

Now, I think Najam Sethi needs to go for 3 reasons:

1. Najam Sethi was a political appointment! He was appointed by the ex PM, Nawaz Sharif. Najam Sethi is still considered to be a very close aide of the Sharif family . .
2. He has already said that he doesn't believe in the legitimacy of this govt. and hence morally, I think he should resign himself!
3. There is no love lost between Najam Sethi and IK and clearly Sethi sb hasn't put that behind him and has furthered the narrative of the Sharif family through this article!

Hence, I don't think it would be possible to ensure PCB becomes an independently run and governed institution devoid of any political interference and favors with Sethi sb at the helm!

I would have liked if Sethi had approached Khan sb and talked about how to make PCB an institution! But now, Sethi needs to go!

Hopefully, IK makes an appointment based solely on merit! As I said above, I would be very disappointed if any appointment is made that is not on merit.

Dead Man Walking I guess.

He knows his days are numbered.

Ironic, what utter drivel this guy has written. As Punjab's caretaker CM before 2013, Sethi facilitated massive pre-poll rigging in PML-N's favor. Google "35 Punctures".

Furthermore both Sethi and his wife have already been summoned by FBR/NAB to account for assets amassed in the past 6 years.
They are also looking at whether PSL was used a means to launder dirty money by his business associates.

This is not political vendetta, this is accountability :D

Think it’s both.

Najam Sethi must be ruing the fact that ICC doesn't have a no political interference clause like Fifa does for football now.

Even N league couldn't remove Faisal Saleh Hayat of PPP from Pakistan football federation. When they tried to do that they banned Pakistan football team for years.

In current scenario, I dont even see Inzi and Mickey surviving..

I don't think IK is going to argue with success. They've done a good job and the culture of the team has changed for the better. The PCT has become a microcosm of what IK wants to do for Pakistan. Why kill off that symbolism?

Sethi saab knows his days are now numbered.

This article is probably the last nail in the coffin for him. It was a good run but I guess it had to come to an end.

With IKs vision, wouldn't be surprised if he brings in a better/more competent administrator.

FIFA will ban only small teams I doubt they will take action against any top European or South American teams if same thing happened. Its biggest corrupt sports organisation in world.

I was listening to Malick yesterday that message has been conveyed to Najam Sethi from PTI that he can continue his position for next few months but it seems like he will be the first one to go even before governors...

Couldn't agree more!

Minus the Sharjeel part

I didn't like him from the start not because he opposed Imran khan, but because he is a hypocrite. A two faced journalist. Do a history search on him

Thought I do admit, he did a great job in managing PSL but then again, he was selected because he got a favor for the services that he rendered for his ex masters I guess.

You cant be running your mouth against someone who is about to take over, Imran is known for being dealing with problems with an iron fist. He should have stayed under the radar but nope, he came out all guns blazing, I dont see his future in PCB.

Agree with each and every point.

Sethi could have left with some respect left but instead he's spoiled his own farewell.

Whatever his political leanings, Sethi has done some very good work. Cricket has come back to Pakistan in small steps but that is better than nothing, the PSL has been an outstanding success and the limited overs team has improved beyond measure from a 15 year malaise.

The PCB should not be under government control anyway and their board should be independently elected, this is something Khan himself has oft spoken of, so let's see the board can advance in a more democratic manner and maybe...just maybe, Sethi is still the right man for the job.

Sethi is a shameless individual. He knows that his days are numbered so sees no harm in talking filth.

KARACHI: Sensing a change in the top management of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the former chief executive of the board Arif Ali Khan Abassi on Wednesday urged the government in waiting to empower the regional associations which, he said, are the actual stakeholders of the game in the country.

“Only replacing the PCB chairman, which looks ominous, will not serve the purpose,” he said. It will be a mere eyewash”, Abbasi told this correspondent. “The General body of the regional associations should elect an executive council of 12 individuals to call the shots.” The former cricket board chief executive was of the opinion that the patron should appoint the PCB chairman as usual. “Since all the general body members can’t meet frequently, therefore the executive council should be given the mandate to assemble 5-6 times in a year to run the affairs”, the former PCB head opined.

Abbasi also called for a separate mechanism for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “The PSL is purely a commercial venture which should operate independently with a competent businessman as it’s head,” he concluded.

And this from Najam Sethi today

The gist of above for non Urdu readers is that he is wondering if PTI has more important issues at hand rather than worry about Najam Sethi and if he is to be removed then he should be replaced with a competent person

IK and PTI leaders have far more pressing issues at hand to deal with such as forming govt., etc. I haven't seen any PTI leader or anyone of importance discuss this matter except for sports 'journalists' and 'analysts'.

Sethi keeps trying to seem as if he's the centre of attention here, but he isn't.

Thats his daal roti, he is way too worried about his position than anyone else in Pakistan atm...

What’s wrong with people?
He is still a crook despite doing some good for PSL.
I am 100% certain under him PCB can’t be completely transparent and that should be enough to remove him from PCB.
PSL will survive without him and will become better, there are far more competent and honest people than him in Pakistan.

Sethi is looking to hasten his departure from chairmanship. No one has officially said anything regarding his dismissal but he seems to think everyone is out to get him.
