Zakir Musa killed in South Kashmir encounter: Officials

SRINAGAR: In a major success, Zakir Musa, the so-called chief of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, a group affiliated with Al-Qaeda, was killed in an encounter with security forces in a village in South Kashmir's Tral, officials confirmed Friday.

A defence spokesman said one militant was killed in the operation at Dadsara in Tral area of Pulwama district Thursday night.

"The (slain) terrorist was identified as Zakir Musa after the body was recovered Friday morning. Weapons and war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site," defence spokesman Rajesh Kalia said, adding that the operation has been called off.

Senior police officials said security forces had launched a cordon and search operation at Dadsara village and when the terrorists tried to escape, a gunfight broke out.

They said efforts were made to make them surrender but the request fell on deaf ears and the holed up terrorists started lobbing grenades using a launcher.

The officials said more security forces were rushed to the area to prevent the terrorists from escaping under the cover of darkness.

Spontaneous protests broke out Thursday night in Shopian, Pulwama, Awantipora and downtown Srinagar, with people raising slogans in favour of Musa, prompting authorities to impose curfew in some parts of the Valley as a precautionary measure.

Quite a concern that the raising of these flags are raising such cheers from what sounds like a massive crowd. What that says to me is that despite their terrible reputation worldwide ISIS seems to have caught the imagination of oppressed Muslims in the valley. Part of it is defiance and provocation as well of course but shows just how far India is from winning hearts and minds of Kashmir.

Should have just allowed Kashmir to become part of Pakistan back in 1947 as logic would have dictated. Then it wouldn't have been their problem. Kashmir doesn't resemble the rest of India in any shape or form.

Yes exactly.. These are the agents of army as proven many times. There are more than 100 agencies active in Kashmir. As you know it's the flag of Islam also which is defamed by isis so many people consider it as such. Frankly speaking there is no presense of isis in Kashmir and never will be.

1) Some Kashmiris use the flag as an irritant to annoy Indians. They aren't supporting Daesh. This isnt some new trend. It has been happening since last 4-5 years and you and me both know that in last 5 years there has been zero growth of Isis in Kashmir.

2) Sometimes there are Government agents who infiltrate the crowds and then do it to defame the struggle.

3) Why dont Kashmiris stop these people from displaying the flags? Because we are either indifferent towards it or at most we dont do anything because we respect the Kalima written on it. There is absolutely no presence of Isis in Kashmir because the ideology is alien and contrary to the ethos of the Kashmiri society.
