Australian Cricket great Ian Chappell has called for Pakistan to move Babar Azam higher up the batting order after notching a remarkable innings at the Gabba, as the hosts claimed victory in the first Test.

With Pakistan's top order dismissed, the 25-year-old stepped up and finished with an impressive 104 from 160 deliveries.

His aggression proved a revelation for Pakistan after he brought up his second Test century before edging a Nathan Lyon delivery to Tim Paine.

Chappell believed Pakistan would be remiss not to move Babar higher up the order ahead of the Adelaide after placing him at a "ridiculous" five at the Gabba.

"I think he's a very good player. But Pakistan have got to make much better use of him by getting him further up the order," Chappell exclusively told Wide World of Spots. "Four is the minimum.

"He should have batted at four in the match and I'd like to see him put in at three, but certainly no lower than four.

"The first innings got bogged down a bit and that's when their problems started."

"I think if he had come in at 1/75 in the first innings, how much difference it made to the game we'll never know but it was ridiculous to send him in at five.

"I think Australia is going to find it pretty hard to contain him and the thing that does is help the guy down the other end as well, and keep the game moving."

"In looking at that batting line-up, the one bloke I think who can take charge of the game is Babar Azam."

Chappell also commended the partnership Babar and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan built.

The duo put a halt to the Green and Gold's victory and extended the day longer to what most would've expected as they formed a 132-run partnership with Rizwan's innings of 95 becoming the highest score from a Pakistan wicketkeeper in Australia.

"It makes a hell of a difference to the game when the batsman are looking to be positive," Chappell said.

"And that was a really positive partnership between Babar Azam and Rizwan, they played really well.

"So, I think it was a combination between the pitch being a bit flat, the ball getting a bit old and some really good batting.

Australia wrapped up the Test with an innings-and-five-run victory over the tourists, but it's Babar's big knock that proved the highlight on the final day of play.

Hiding at 5/6 is a strategy that suits limited batsmen like Misbah. Babar is technically decent and has the ability to score big hundreds, if he wants to make a name for himself in world cricket he will have to do it at the top of the order.

Or is he content being a t20 star, maybe he is, I don't know.

It really needs to be this

1. Shan
2. Imam
3. Azhar
4. Babar
5. Shafiq
6. Haris / Iftikhar
7. Rizwan

Would still prefer Haris over Iftikhar. Haris is out of it right now but has the potential to gain form again, especially if he isn't sent up to face a newish ball. Iftikhar is increasingly becoming a tough sell for Test cricket and his position can't really be changed.

I think either way Harris is in our long term plans and will do ok for us hopefully after he's out of his slump.

Iftikhar we can give this final chance and be done with if he fails considering age and potential.

Harris is really out of form and was poor even in domestic prior to this tour

Iftikhar will be given more chances in the home Tests for sure. Won't be dropped so quickly.

Babar has to bat at 4 in the long-term. It is the ideal position for your best batsman because it is the easiest position in the lineup, and you would want your best batsman to bat at the easiest position to maximize his scoring out.

He can definitely become a 50+ averaging batsman at 4. At 3 or 5/6, he might be hovering in the 40s in the long-term.

Nothing new for the Pakistani establishment.

As long as I have been following cricket (20 years now), your best batsman has been coming in at 5. Only YK was the exception.

Azhar at 3-4 will be a disaster. He's incapable of accelerating when set. Just play him as opener. Babar at 3 so he can absorb the new ball and has more potential partners to bat with.

He's played at that position and its #3 so hardly need to accelerate. You're acting as if our openers will put up 100+ run partnerships.

I basically think by playing both Harris and Iftikhar we are wasting a spot and I think Imam gives more utility.

No, but they can at least play out the new ball spell.

It's fine to have a defensive batsman at 3 if you have dynamic batsmen around him like India do. We don't have that. Azhar has been terrible at 3-4.

Iftikhar is trash. He shouldn't even be in the squad let alone the starting 11.

If Imam and Shan combo works Azhar can hide at 3. You can afford a snail batsman at that position if both of your openers can strike at over 50, which I think they can. Imam may not be the quickest in ODIs but there is no reason to believe he will be as defensive as Azhar.

This. I think we need to make best of the situation and to me this is best short term solution.

Iftikhar isn’t great but atm Harris is in horrible form whereas Iftikhar has some confidence form the limited over leg of the tour. Besides I’ve read and heard from a few people that within the dressing room Misbah had been hailing and anointing Iftikhar as the hope for our batting line up before the first test so Iftikhar is clearly a Misbah favorite.

Harris is gonna fail most likely due to form anyways so I think by playing Iftikhar we have nothing to lose and if he is trash again, hopefully team management takes decision of dumping him for good

Anyways it’s seems we definitely put in more thinking effort than our team management and I won’t be surprised if we see the exact same top 7 for next test
